Tom plays hooky to go swimming with Huck, and nearly gets away with it too until Sid interferes. To get back at him, Tom rashly boasts that he'll get a prize bible before Sid does, but soon runs out of things to trade with the other kids for the tickets he needs. And after Tom gets into a fight with the new boy, Aunt Polly decides that as punishment, he should spend his whole Saturday working.

Faced with spending his whole Saturday whitewashing Aunt Polly's fence, Tom persuades his friends to not only do the work for him but to pay for the privilege too. Then Tom meets Judge Thatcher's niece, Becky, and immediately falls in love with her. When he discovers that Becky will be at Sunday school, he's more determined than ever to get the remaining tickets to claim his prize bible.

Tom is in love, so much so that he even passes up the chance to go fishing with Huck, just so that he can to go to school instead and see Becky. After deliberately getting into trouble so that he can sit with the girls, he persuades Becky to meet him at recess, when he suggests that they get engaged. But the engagement is short-lived when Tom accidentally lets slip that he's been engaged before.

Tom and Huck visit the graveyard at midnight, intending to use a dead cat to cure warts. But instead of the devils they expect, three grave robbers arrive and the boys witness the murder of the doctor. Afraid of what Indian Joe might do to them, Tom and Huck swear to keep quiet about what they've seen, but start to have doubts when Muff Potter gets blamed for the murder.

Everyone's talking about Dr Robinson's murder, and believe that Muff Potter was the murderer. Tom is still worried about his and Huck's decision to keep quiet about what they witnessed. He runs into Joe, who's also miserable but for different reasons. Together with Huck, they decide the only thing for them to do is to run away and become pirates. When their boat springs a leak, they set up camp on Jackson Island.

Aunt Polly and Mrs Harper discover that their boys are missing, and realize that Tom, Joe and Huck ran away. They start to fear the worst when the leaky boat the boys stole washes ashore. Meanwhile, it's a pirate's life for the boys on Jackson Island, with plenty of fun and games until Tom and Joe start to get homesick.

Tom sneaks home and overhears Aunt Polly and Mrs Harper talking about how much they miss the boys and that they regret being so harsh with them. Back on the island, Joe and Huck are starting to get bored of being pirates and consider going home but Tom, knowing the plans for the boys' funeral, has a more dramatic return in mind.

Things are looking bleak for Muff Potter as his trial approaches. Tom and Huck become more anxious, torn between wanting to help Muff and worrying about breaking their oath to keep quiet. At the trial, the whole town - including Indian Joe - gathers to hear one witness after another speak out against Muff and it looks as if nothing at all will be said in his defense.

Tom and Huck decide to hunt for buried treasure, and after having no luck digging around dead trees, they decide to try a haunted house. But before they get a chance to hunt for the treasure, Indian Joe arrives. From their hiding place, the boys watch as Joe discovers the treasure they were looking for and takes it away. With only one clue to where the treasure is now hidden, Tom and Huck start looking for 'number two under the cross'.

While Tom goes on a school picnic to visit the caves, Huck stays behind to look for Indian Joe. After wandering around town all day without luck, Huck finally catches up with Indian Joe plotting to take revenge on Widow Douglas. Meanwhile, Tom and Becky leave the school group to go exploring on their own, but get lost in the caves.

As Tom and Becky get more desperate to escape, Tom sees Indian Joe in the caves. Then, just as the search parties are starting to give up hope, Tom finally finds a way out. When Aunt Polly eventually stops keeping Tom in bed to recover, he discovers that the caves have been sealed up with Indian Joe trapped inside. Tom and Huck return to the caves to see if the treasure is hidden there.

With the treasure they found, Tom and Huck are rich, and Widow Douglas and her sister take pity on Huck and adopt him. Wearing fancy clothes and being civilized doesn't suit Huck at all and he soon gets tired of it and runs away. But Tom persuades him to return by promising a great new adventure forming a band of robbers, which Huck can only join if he agrees to stay with the widow.

Pap Finn has returned and is determined to get his hands on Huck's money, no matter what. Huck manages to sign the money over to Judge Thatcher before his father catches up with him, but when Pap finds out, he kidnaps Huck and locks him up in a deserted cabin while he tries to convince the Judge to hand over what he claims is rightfully his.

Episode 14

After spending the night working away with a rusty saw blade, Huck eventually escapes from the cabin where his father locked him up, and sets about making it look as if he's been attacked. Meanwhile, Pap Finn agrees to bring Huck back in return for a share of his money, but he finds the cabin empty and Judge Thatcher suspects that Pap is responsible for Huck's apparent murder.

Aunt Polly and Widow Douglas blame themselves for not doing more to help Huck, but find themselves with an additional worry when Miss Watson's slave, Jim, runs away. Meanwhile Huck is enjoying his new-found freedom on Jackson Island, even more so when he discovers he's not alone. Once Huck's managed to convince Jim that he's not a ghost, they start to make plans to sail down the river.

Huck and Jim find a raft washed ashore by the high water, and think their luck is even better when they also find a house boat... until they discover a dead body inside. Disguised as a girl to avoid being recognized, Huck goes ashore to find out what's happening, and discovers that a search party will be looking for Jim that very night.

Huck and Jim build a shelter on their raft, in case they need to hide... which happens sooner than they expect as a couple of slave traders start nosing around. Huck manages to scare them away by saying his Pap's on the raft and has smallpox. But Huck and Jim's luck runs out when a river boat smashes through their raft and they have to swim for it.

With the raft and all his belongings lost, and no idea where Jim is, Huck looks for shelter and stumbles across the Grangerfords. After initially being greeted with guns, Huck manages to persuade them he's not one of the Shepherdsons that they're feuding with and is welcomed into the family, but soon finds himself getting caught up in the middle of their feud.
Episode 19

Huck learns more about the Grangerfords' feud, and finds that they don't even stop on Sundays when he meets the Shepherdsons at church. When he goes to collect Sophia's bible which she left behind at church, he finds a strange note inside it. But Huck soon forgets the note when he discovers that Jim has been hiding nearby and has fixed up their raft.

Huck puts off saying goodbye to the Grangerfords, but when he wakes in the morning the whole house is deserted. He discovers that Sophia's run away to marry a Shepherdson, which escalates the feud, leading to most of the Grangerfords being killed. Huck finally rejoins Jim and they return to the river to continue their journey.

While looking for food, Huck runs into two men on the run from an angry mob and invites them to join him and Jim on the raft. The pair introduce themselves as Duke and Dauphin, which interests Jim who seems to enjoy serving them. Although Huck has doubts about them being royalty, he decides to keep quiet since he and Jim have secrets of their own and don't want any trouble.

Episode 22

The Duke and Dauphin turn to acting and stop at a town to put on a show. But when the locals don't appreciate their talents, they decide to make fools of the townsfolk and make some money in the process, by putting on another show, the Royal Nonesuch. Forced to leave the town in a hurry, Huck and Jim start to have doubts about their guests and decide they were better off when it was just the two of them.

Huck returns to the raft to find that Jim is gone and soon discovers that the Duke and Dauphin have sold Jim to a nearby farm. After hiding the raft and tricking the Duke into thinking it's been stolen, Huck visits the farm where he hopes to find Jim. At the farm he meets Aunt Sally who mistakes him for her nephew... none other than his best friend, Tom Sawyer.

Huck continues to pretend that he's Tom when the real Tom arrives and confuses things even more by introducing himself as Sid. Tom agrees to help Huck to rescue Jim, but refuses to go along with Huck's plan to get Jim out as quickly as possible and instead insists on doing things the way they are in the books.

Tom continues to slow down Jim's escape by insisting things be done the way they are in the books and Jim grudgingly goes along with it. But Tom's anonymous letter warning Uncle Silas about the escape attempt proves to be a mistake when Silas gathers the townsfolk together to stop them, and Tom gets shot as he, Huck and Jim try to get away.

Episode 26

When the doctor needs help to get the bullet out of Tom's leg, Jim comes out of his hiding place to assist, which leads to him being caught again. Then Aunt Polly arrives unexpectedly, and the truth about Tom and Huck's name-switching comes out, along with their involvement in Jim's escape. But Polly also brings news that Jim is now a free man, thanks to Miss Watson's will.
