The Sloans arrive at the train station expecting Mike Jr. but meet his new Italian bride Gina instead. Ginger is shocked to find out her fiancee Charlie has married Caroline, an English woman, while he was overseas. Abe and Gloria are thrilled that Robert's home early, but are surprised by his angry attitude. Jeff and Sarah try to figure out a way to tell his brother Hank that they are in love with each other. Linda tries to move on with her life after losing her boyfriend Mike Jr. to Gina, and losing her job to the incoming GIs.

Ruth finds proof that Gina became pregnant before she and Mike Jr. were married. Gloria is grieved by Robert's attitude towards the death of Mike Jr. and that Mike and Ruth dismissed Mike Jr.'s request to have her is at his funeral. Sarah tries to make Jeff believe that they really don't love each other. Hank convinces Charlie to do one more favor for their war buddy Mike Jr.

The Sloans try to pay Gina to leave town when they learn that she's pregnant, touching off a swell of support for the widowed war bride. Jeff's anonymous love poem to his brother's sweetheart goes astray.

Hank's wedding day has arrived, but Linda can't go because her supervisor refuses to let her take the day off. Jeff has made peace with Sarah and Hank's marriage. Ginger tries to find a date for wedding, so that Charlie will think that she is over him. Abe and Gloria are fired when the Sloans learn that they took Gina in. Charlie wonders why Caroline is not pregnant yet.

Mike Sloan, Sr. tries to keep the workers from organising when union organiser Al Kahn comes to town. Jeff and Ginger date publicly. Abe plots to get his job back by bringing Gina back into the Sloan family.

Union activity at the plant divides the town. Linda tries to talk her brother Hank out of becoming management while their mother confronts organiser Al about the danger he's brought to her family. Robert Davis joins the union after being attacked by racist co-workers, but has to fight his father on the issue.

Caroline is angry when her husband Charlie jealously attacks Jeff over Ginger. Jeff and Ginger travel to Toledo for a pregnancy test while Caroline strikes out at her husband by leaving town with a travelling salesman.

Gina finds a place, unaware that it was arranged by her hated former father-in-law. Charlie tells Ginger he married the wrong woman, but continues to make plans to start a family. Linda and Hank fight but manage to make improvements at the plant.

Ginger sees her ticket to stardom when a dance contest that gives the winners a screen test arrives in town. Caroline convinces Charlie that they should enter, then tries to rig the contest in their favor. Sarah takes over Thanksgiving preparations without asking Anne first. Al ambushes Anne into dancing with him in the contest. The Sloans decide to make friends with their employees in the hope that they will reject the union.

Al continues to pursue Anne, but she rebuffs his advances. Jeff and Ginger prepare for their trip and the screen test. The union works to fight against the racial tension at the plant caused by the Sloans hiring African-American workers.

Jeff debates if he should cheat on Ginger with Judy, once his teammates tell him that whoever Judy likes ends up on the team. The Sloans back the Union into a corner after Caroline mentions to them that there is no fund to pay for a strike.

Caroline realizes that she's in over her head with the Sloans when they pressure her to find out who the Union's spy is. Charlie, Robert, and Al think there is a traitor in the union. Jeff scrambles to keep Ginger in Florida after she calls off their engagement. Hank and Linda are at each other's throats because of the lock out. Abe finds a unique way to get back at the Sloans. A member of the Metcalf family pays the price for the hostility over the plant lock out.

Members of the union and the management wonder if whoever shot Sarah will come after them next. Sarah loses her fight for survival with a surprising person by her bedside. Hank comes closer to learning the truth about Jeff and Sarah. Anne gets some shocking news from her doctor. Sarah's death awakens Ruth's "charitable" side.

The workers gain surprising leverage.
