On May 14, 1970, Gudrun Ensslin and Ulrike Meinhof forcibly released Andreas Baader, who had been arrested five weeks earlier. Together with a handful of like-minded people, they gave up their legal existence and went underground. It was the beginning of the "Red Army Faction" and the end of a disastrous radicalization of a small part of the protesting students in 1968. The RAF's hope as an armed avant-garde could spark a revolution in the Federal Republic was a deadly illusion from the start. The film reconstructs the escalation of violence to the bloody climax of the terror in 1977. Contemporary witnesses and experts explain the phenomenon of terrorism in the Federal Republic and its effects on society. Relatives of victims describe fainting and pain in the face of the merciless - and still unrepentant - RAF terror.
