DCI Tom Mathias refuses to take recuperation time off or go in hiding for Iwan Thomas, who torched his mobile home and hides with his brother Gareth. Tom scolds DI Mared Rhys their feelings may not intervene with the investigation. He takes charge of the fatal skull smashing at home of local church minister Jones, who leaves behind the family of adult son Owain, none of whom fully adhered to his old-fashioned opinions, which inadvertently antagonized parishioners as if utterly insensitive, such as veterinarian Lyn Edwards who was denied proper grieving over his son.
