Newlyweds Carl and Jennifer Stone arrive at Phillips' Cafe just in time to witness a botched robbery in which the counterman is killed. Perpetrator Joe Norton permits the two to leave on the condition that they never tell anyone what they saw. Joe's brother Pete is dubious and sets out to find and silence the frightened witnesses for good. Carl Stone subsequently has an attack of conscience and provides Dan Mathews with an anonymous tip that leads to Joe Norton's arrest. Joe's alibi is shaky, but Dan is determined to use existing leads to find the Stones in order to make the case airtight. Pete Norton catches up to the Stones, but Dan arrives shortly thereafter and uses a ruse to lure Pete into the open.

Vicious Whitey Sims is being extradited to Nevada to face a first degree murder charge and a likely death sentence. He manages to escape from Sergeant Samson, but he is shot and wounded by Dan Mathews. Sims abducts Alice Carter and forces her to drive to the apartment/card store that she shares with her paraplegic mother. He holds the two women as hostages and forces them to treat his gunshot wound, but a clue left by Alice helps Dan and Sergeant Williams locate the card store. When they enter, the resourceful Mrs. Carter is able to discreetly let them know that Sims is there. They leave and re-enter through the store's back door, but a tense final confrontation ensues when Sims uses the terrified Alice Carter as a shield.

Myra Davis masterminds a plot by which her husband Les escapes from the law while being escorted to a trial. Their son Ralph shoots and kills a deputy sheriff in the process. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams travel quickly to the Davis home, but the cocksure Myra has already transported Ralph and Les to a remote location. She then slips a tail and gets them safely back to the Davis home, where they plan to hide for a few days before fleeing to Mexico. Dan, Sergeant Williams, and a plainclothes officer return to the home and surround it after Dan satisfies himself that Les and Ralph Davis are now hiding inside. A pitched gun battle ensues, with neither side willing (or able) to show the other any mercy whatsoever.

Joe Hodges and his partner Frank rob the Merrill Construction Co. of $5,000, several boxes of blasting caps, and several cases of dynamite. They stow the explosives in their car trunk, intending to use them in future crimes. When Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams investigate the theft, foreman George Sharpe explains that the caps are radio activated and could be set off by any unusually strong radio transmission signal. Dan orders his officers not to use their two-way radios and sets up a series of roadblocks, one of which prevents Joe and Frank's escape. Hodges attempts to use the dynamite as a shield in a desperate attempt to secure their release, but Dan's knowledge of explosives helps break the tense standoff.

Racketeer Jim Garrett and his henchman Eddie Peterson are determined to take over a gambling house in the small town of Glenridge. When they are spotted by Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams, they select local garage owner Nolan Beale as an accomplice. Beale wins several thousand dollars with Garrett and Peterson's money, but unwisely attempts to double cross them by having his partner Gil Durbin take most of the money back to their garage. Garrett confronts Beale and kills him in a scuffle shortly before Dan and his officers raid the gambling house. When they discover Beale's body, they deduce that Garrett and Peterson are responsible and convince Durbin to help lure the two felons out into the open.

Charlie Holman and Vince Crater steal $35,000 in new bills from the City Bank, but disagree over use of the funds. The younger and more impetuous Crater kills Holman, who had already placed the money in a suitcase and shipped it to another town by train. Crater is forced to sneak onto the train to try to retrieve the suitcase. He narrowly eludes Officer Dennis, but is unable to leave the train. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams find Holman's body and his shipping receipt, and they are able to deduce from their discussion with the Station Master that Crater and the money are both on the train. Dan orders the Highway Patrol helicopter into action to pursue the train and they spot Crater as he jumps when the train loses speed on a hill. They are able to trap Crater under a bridge, but forcing him out from the air proves difficult. Sergeant Williams disembarks from the copter in an attempt to surround the increasingly desperate and impetuous felon.

Nick Granger offers reclusive artist Jeff Carson a ride, then suddenly murders him as part of a plot set in motion by Carson's estranged wife Blanche Cronin and her companion Malcolm. Carson had disappeared years earlier to pursue his artistic ambitions and he is able to sketch Granger's likeness and write down a description of his car before dying. Robbery is initially thought to be the motive when Carson's wallet is found empty. However, investigation reveals that Blanche had kept up payments on a $150,000 life insurance policy that named her as beneficiary. The sketch and the background information help Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams identify Granger and establish a more involved motive for Carson's murder. They tail the suddenly desperate killer to Blanche's apartment, where he threatens to blackmail Blanche and Malcolm. A tense armed confrontation ensues when Dan and Sergeant Williams forcibly enter the apartment and Granger tries to use Blanche as a hostage.

Two criminals (Lou and Wes) take over Betty Fisher's small rural railway station at gunpoint. They matter-of-factly tell her that they plan to use her station's track switch to cause the crash of a high speed train carrying $750,000 in government currency. They gleefully advise Betty that they will be able to steal the currency and escape in the confusion caused by the injuries and deaths resulting from the crash. The terrified woman maintains sufficient presence of mind to leave her communications microphone open so that Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams are able to learn of her plight and of the need to redirect the train. They reach the station with only minutes to spare and are able to shoot Wes when he tries to force his way out. However, Dan must take drastic action when Lou tries to take Betty as a hostage.

Using inside information obtained from Pete Madison, Jack and Sally Baron plan to steal $300,000 worth of gems from three traveling jewelry salesmen. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams are called when the first salesman dies from injuries sustained during the robbery. Information from diamond merchant Henry LeFaubre helps them narrow the focus of their search, especially after the thieves' second robbery yields only worthless sample diamonds. When Dan and Sergeant Williams find the discarded sample diamonds, they disable Jack and Sally Baron's car (which is parked nearby). After the stranded Barons are captured, Dan finds himself engaged in a high-speed chase involving the now-desperate Pete Madison

Mason is determined to expose the racket himself, but eventually finds himself beaten, bound, and gagged in Sandy's car. When Richards dies, his wife relents and tells Dan and Sergeant Williams about the "jobs for pay" racket. Aided by her information, they travel to the railroad yard and find themselves in a gun battle with Sandy and Ray, who have become desperate to avoid a murder charge.

Broke with a sick child at home, Jim Rogers decides to try and rob a warehouse. Two hardened criminals (Jimmy Withers and his accomplice, Sam) are also robbing the warehouse at the same instant and kill the watchman while making their getaway. Jim notices that the warehouse's insurer will pay a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons robbing the facility. He picks up the gun that Sam dropped during the fracas and has his wife Peg, call the Highway Patrol to turn him in for the reward. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams notice that Jim's story about "the other two guys" has numerous holes in it and when Jim becomes aware that the reward won't be paid until after conviction, he has a change of heart and escapes. In the meantime, Withers and Sam realize that Jim witnessed part of the robbery, including the murder of the watchman. Intending to kill Jim and retrieve the gun, Withers and Sam trail him back to his house where Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams will also be waiting...for the truth.

The assault causes Fields to suffer a fatal heart attack, and Gayle's accomplice Mattie worries that they will face a murder charge. Her worries intensify when handyman Mike Purdum tells her of his determination to find Fields' killer. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams subsequently visit Mattie's roadside diner and question her at length about Fields' death. She believes that Gayle has abandoned her, but he subsequently returns to the diner and attempts to use her as a hostage. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams know that they have only a brief opportunity to break the tense standoff and prevent Gayle's escape.

After Mrs. Lewis identifies Rucker from a mug shot, Dan Mathews and his officers learn the two men's method of operation and can better predict where they might strike next. When Officer Dennis spots the two men's stolen car near the Hughes Supermarket, Dan knows that Oley is robbing the market while Rucker holds Ruth Austin (the manager's wife) as a hostage. Officer Dennis follows Oley at a distance while Dan and Sergeant Williams position themselves at the Austins' home. They intercept Oley and refuse his offer of a "deal", but they are well aware that split-second timing will be necessary to capture Rucker and prevent him from killing Mrs. Austin.

When a story about the beating of motel owner Elliott Walters goes to press, Dan knows that an attempt will be made on Hartman's life and he provides Hartman with constant protection. Dagggett's thugs murder Walters after forcing him to make a phone call that will lure Hartman to Daggett's residence. Dan and Sergeant Williams follow Hartman at a discrete distance and arrest Daggett. However, they are forced to set up a roadblock away from the residence and engage Daggett's thugs in a gun battle in order to rescue the endangered reporter.

While eloping, Seaman First Class Jim Newman and Betty Jane Martin stop at Hoffman's Service Station and find an emergency involving a choking infant. Jim revives the baby and the two drive off without giving their names. Moments later, Dr. Kincaid arrives with Dan Mathews and determines that the baby has a dangerous and highly contagious form of spinal meningitis. He advises that Jim and Betty Jane must be found and inoculated within hours to prevent their own possible deaths and a likely epidemic. Without names, Dan and Sergeant Williams face long odds, but they are helped by a local store owner and the justice of the peace that married the couple. When the two are finally located, they decide to avoid confrontation with Homer Martin (Betty Jane's father) and flee. Dan is forced to chase them down at high speed on treacherous dirt roads.

A man and woman (Fred and Honey) pose as a federal narcotics agent and an apprehended pusher in order to swindle businesspeople by convincing them that their relatives will be implicated in drug crimes if they don't pay thousands of dollars in bribe money. When their attempt to swindle diner owner "Ma" Davis ends in murder, they decide to pull two more quick jobs before leaving the area. They panic and flee the scene when their second target refuses to be taken, and he is subsequently able to give the Highway Patrol a description of the two and their vehicles. They abandon one of their cars in an attempt to elude the roadblocks, but a violent confrontation ensues when they are spotted by Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams.

Prison escapee Nolan Wilbur shoots a gas station attendant dead and steals a woman's car in a bid for freedom. He ties her up but she manages to call for help. A series of roadblocks is put in place and Dan Mathews orders the Patrol's helicopter to aid in the search. Wilbur abandons the car and spots a man by an inactive mine. The man is a prospector and there with material to shore up the unsafe mine which is in dicey condition and subject to caving in. Wilbur holds the man at gunpoint until they see the police helicopter. Wilbur then recklessly forces the man, despite the latter's warnings, to take him into the mine to hide, thus causing a partial cave-in that seriously injures the would-be prospector who is trapped beneath a large rock. Dan and Sergeant Williams are forced to enter the mine unarmed to aid the victim. Once outside they pretend to depart but stay hidden to position themselves for a final effort to bring down Wilbur and airlift the injured man to a hospital.

Rita Hudson accepts delivery of $35,000 worth of imported diamonds on behalf of her employer, Mr. Van Dyce. She is immediately abducted by thieves Ernest Zober and Chuck Barton, who received information concerning her movements from Lydia Stevens (Mr. Van Dyce's executive assistant). Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams investigate and deduce that Rita was a victim rather than a perpetrator. They suspect that Lydia may be involved and Dan drops hints that that the Highway Patrol has a detailed description of Zober and Barton and their car. When Lydia panics, Zober and Barton decide to abandon her and go meet "Mr. Darrell", the prospective buyer of the gems. When Lydia realizes she has been duped and abandoned, she tells Dan all she knows. The information enables Dan and his officers to trap "Mr. Darrell" at a roadblock. They quickly locate Zober and Barton as well, and an armed confrontation ensues with Rita perilously near the line of fire.

A thief named Hooper poses as a road construction worker in order to flag down late model cars so that he and his accomplices (Yvonne and Dave) can transport them across the nearby Mexican border to be painted and sold. Since the stolen cars are not turning up anywhere in the U. S., Dan Mathews deduces that they are being sold in Mexico and he enlists the aid of Mexican Highway Patrol Captain Julio Gonzales to set up roadblocks on both sides of the border. When one of the stolen cars is identified, Yvonne is permitted to pass through the roadblock so she can be tailed to their hideout. The thieves suddenly and unexpectedly find themselves in an armed confrontation with Dan, Capt. Gonzales, and their officers.

Revenge-minded Paul Carson has his girlfriend Vera distract Sergeant Ken Williams while Carson takes Williams' car and deliberately runs down a pedestrian while wearing a Highway Patrol uniform. The evidence and the witnesses' accounts of the incident all point to Sergeant Williams's guilt. Dan Mathews suspends him from duty, but permits him to informally aid in the investigation. A longshot inquiry to a key duplication shop identifies Carson as a suspect with a motive. Further investigation reveals that he and Vera plan to leave the area on an afternoon train. The Highway Patrol is able to arrive at the train station before they depart, and an armed confrontation ensues.

Reformed ex-convict Jerry Singleton finally stands up to blackmailer Nathan Coley and refuses to pay. Coley threatens Singleton and his wife Marge with a gun and a struggle ensues. When the gun discharges during the struggle, Jerry is seriously wounded and Coley is killed. Jerry is fearful of facing a murder charge because of his past record, so he grabs the gun and flees. Despite Jerry's instructions, Marge calls the Highway Patrol. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams verify that the killing was an accident, but they must chase the injured and weakening Jerry into rough terrain. When Jerry is found, he stubbornly refuses to surrender and Dan sends for Marge in a last-ditch effort to reason with him.

Brent Chugg's death in an automobile accident causes his son Tommy to become increasingly bitter and resentful toward Robert Hoffman, the other driver. The court's exoneration of Hoffman eventually drives Tommy to obtain revenge by murdering Hoffman's son John. He plans the same fate for Robert Hoffman as soon as he can locate him in the remote Rain Mountain resort area. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams must piece together small pieces of the story from several sources in order to finally learn Robert Hoffman's whereabouts and Tommy Chugg's intentions. When they finally arrive at Hoffman's cabin, they must act quickly to prevent the murder of the crippled and unarmed Robert Hoffman.

Hudson reluctantly decides to let Blanche try to sell a stolen diamond ring, and Dan sets up a meeting involving Policewoman Parker posing as a potential buyer. When Dan trails Blanche back to a brake repair shop, Billy's clue suddenly fits in. Hudson and Blanche spot Dan and attempt to flee, but their escape is cut off by Sergeant Williams. An armed confrontation ensues.

The loud but harmless explosions create a diversion that permits them to commit their crimes quickly in the confused atmosphere and escape with few witnesses. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams notice a pattern developing and Dan diverts all available units to the relatively small area in which Nelson and Herrick are likely to strike. After their third robbery nets $10,000, the two thieves find a phalanx of officers converging on the area. With all main roads covered, they make a high-risk attempt to escape by trespassing onto the nearby network of dirt fire roads.

Vance and Sheila Nolan and their two accomplices use their "Import Company" warehouse as a front for merchandise stolen in a series of truck hijackings. After a driver dies from injuries sustained in one of the hijackings, the Nolans make a deal with driver Joe Tyler to "allow" them to hijack his shipment in return for a payment of $5,000. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams investigate the hijacking of Tyler's truck but they are obviously suspicious of his description of the suspects and the gang decides to flee the area. The two accomplices are apprehended by Officer Simpson. The Nolans return to the warehouse, but are unpleasantly surprised when Dan and Sergeant Williams trap them there. A tense armed confrontation ensues.

Hitchhiker Joe Parker disguises himself, robs drivers who offer him rides, then flees in his own car after meeting his wife Dolly. When he is forced to kill one of his victims, he leaves evidence that enables Dan Mathews to deduce that he and Dolly are traveling cross-country and that he wears actors' makeup while committing his crimes. Desperate for more cash, Joe and Dolly decide to stage an outright armed robbery of a businessman spotted at a roadside diner. A tip from the manager of a local motel concerning a guest who was using actors' makeup helps Dan and Sergeant Williams pinpoint the area in which Joe and Dolly are likely to strike next. A subsequent tip from the diner about the "loitering" couple enables Dan to find Dolly waiting in their car while Joe robs the victim. The Parkers get away temporarily by handcuffing Dan to his car after threatening to kill the businessman, but their increasing desperation and recklessness takes them straight toward a series of roadblocks set at Dan's direction.

Ben Douglas sells counterfeit identification cards to the workers of a small Mexican village for 2,000 pesos. He then smuggles them into the U.S. and finds them jobs, but he subsequently threatens them with exposure (and lengthy jail sentences) if they do not give him half their weekly wages. When he threatens Pablo Diaz and demands half of his weekly wages of $60, a scuffle ensues. Unknown to Douglas, the scuffle was witnessed by Pablo's employer and Dan Mathews is called. When Pablo learns that Douglas has swindled and lied to him, he agrees to help. Dan and his Mexican counterpart Captain Perez set up a "sting" that is interrupted when Pablo's future son-in-law Miguel inadvertently lets Douglas know that law enforcement officials are involved. Douglas attempts to flee but gets more than he bargained for when he finds himself in an armed confrontation with Dan and Captain Perez.

Racketeer Jack Avery is stopped for speeding and detained by Sheriff Melton in the small town of Hartsdale. Determined to avoid extradition on a murder charge, he directs henchman Rick Herron to abduct the sheriff's wife Helen and offer to swap Helen's release for Avery's. Dan Mathews advises the sheriff to release Avery so that he can be followed using the Highway Patrol helicopter. Avery and Herron conceal their cars in a cave in a very remote area. They plan to escape later under cover of night, but Dan orders the helicopter pilot to cut the motors, sweep down, and blow dust into the cave so that he and Sergeant Williams can enter undetected for an attempt to capture the felons and rescue Helen Melton.

Inept gunman Ed Leggett botches an attempted late afternoon robbery of Cotton Harmon's roadside diner, resulting in serious injuries to both men. Leggett forces Cotton's wife Doris to treat his own injuries and ignore Cotton's. When Dan Mathews arrives, Leggett threatens to use Doris as a hostage, but he is ultimately convinced to release Cotton and Doris and take Dan instead. Sergeant Williams and a phalanx of Highway Patrol officers surround the diner, but night has fallen and they are hesitant to rush the building or use tear gas because of Leggett's nervousness and his unpredictability. Dan is forced to use a combination of psychology and fearlessness to try to defuse the situation.

Convicted murderers Lita Morgan and Caroline Craig make an unplanned escape from Rendell State Prison when a guard suffers a heart attack. They stop (and kill) a passing motorist and are able to use his car to get into a nearby town to steal clothes, money, and guns. They abandon the car and hijack a bus in a rural area in order to get through a Highway Patrol roadblock, but Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams are suspicious of the bus's apparent paucity of passengers and follow it. The two women abandon the bus and make a desperate bid for freedom by separating, but they are physically and psychologically unable to cope with the rough terrain and the Highway Patrol's relentless pursuit.

Joe Tulley is forced to shoot the proprietor during a botched gas station holdup, and a nearby witness named Larkin identifies Tulley, his car, and his wife Gloria as they attempt to speed away from the scene. When the proprietor dies, Tulley knows that the Highway Patrol will be searching relentlessly for the getaway car, and he pleads with his hard-working brother Frank to dispose of the car by crushing it beyond recognition in a large hydraulic press used in Frank's auto salvage business. Frank is aware of Joe's culpability in the robbery and murder inasmuch as all auto salvage yards have already been visited and advised to be on the lookout for the car. The heretofore honest Frank struggles with the idea of helping his wayward younger brother out of the situation, particularly since a murder is involved. Finally, however, Frank very reluctantly agrees to help and he is able to get the car into the press minutes before Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams return to personally investigate any recent arrivals at the salvage yard. However, Mr. Larkin's description of a small ornament on the car's rear view mirror helps them identify the crushed remains, leading to a tense armed confrontation.

Larry Baker and his vainglorious wife Margaret plan to steal the $200,000 Mohar Gem Collection. They abduct courier Larew Merced from his room and imprison him in a car trunk after they learn that he does not have the gems in his possession. They learn from Merced's papers that a "package" is waiting for him at the railway express office. The manager of the Sunset Motel reports the abduction and Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams learn of the package themselves when they search Merced's room. They stake out the express office and watch as Baker impersonates Merced to claim the package. They follow at a safe distance, waiting patiently for the right moment to arrest the Bakers and rescue the injured Merced.

Steve Dorn and his partner Gabe are forced to abandon their getaway car after a robbery and murder. Desperate to escape in any way possible, they take refuge in the boiler room of a hospital. They hold Logan (the hospital engineer) hostage and learn that equipment in the room also controls the hospital's electricity and other critical life-sustaining systems. Dorn threatens to destroy the building and kill as many of its occupants as possible by tying down the boiler's safety valve if he and Gabe are not permitted to go free. Dr. Feuer (the physician in charge) advises Dan Mathews that this is not an idle threat and that massive destruction and loss of life could conceivably be caused by this action. Dan knows that Dorn is sufficiently desperate to carry out the threat and he is also aware that he has very little time to prevent the catastrophe. He orders Sergeant Williams to penetrate the boiler room from a little-used tunnel in order to give Officer Larrabee an opportunity to shoot Dorn from long range with a rifle.

Gloria attempts to flee to Chicago after mailing the money to her destination, but Joe intercepts her. She is treated roughly until Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams utilize the element of surprise to capture the three and confirm that the package they recovered from Gloria's mailbox contains the stolen money.

Two men (Nicky and Freddie) and a woman (Casey) pull a series of armed robberies by disguising themselves as police officers and using a fake "detour" sign to lure their victims into secluded areas. They decide to flee the state after killing an uncooperative victim, but they cannot resist pulling an unplanned robbery when a tempting target is spotted at a roadside diner. Casey is forced to commandeer the victim's car and use him as a hostage after the original robbery plan is stymied by a Highway Patrol roadblock. When the victim signals his peril by dropping his wallet onto the road, Dan Mathews and Sergeant Johnson follow the car and ultimately find themselves in an armed conflict with the trio.

An arson investigator gives Patterson's name as a possible suspect, and Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams trace him to Norpel's farm. However, they arrive after he has already assaulted Norpel, knocked him unconscious, and is about to set the barn ablaze with Norpel still in it. Sergeant Williams distracts Patterson while Dan Mathews overpowers him, but the barn is set afire in the scuffle. The two Highway Patrol officers have only seconds to rescue Norpel and extinguish the blaze.

Red and Sue Hammond rob (and murder) two bank messengers on the same day. They decide to pull one more robbery before leaving the area, but their attempt to rob messenger Ernest Babcock proves unsuccessful because the money is in an inviolable briefcase that is chained to his wrist. They abandon Babcock and attempt to flee, but the additional time they've spent in the area gives Dan Mathews and Sergeant Williams the opportunity to ascertain their whereabouts and ultimately trap them inside their motel room. The felons decide to make a last-ditch effort to shoot their way out, since they are well aware that capture will likely mean the death penalty.
