The Highway Patrol's involvement intensifies when two of his victims die from the injections. A radio broadcast alerts the Varnums of one of the deaths and they attempt to flee the state. Dan Mathews is able to ascertain their whereabouts and eventually finds himself involved in a standoff in which Joe Varnum crassly attempts to use Anita as a shield.

When Dan Mathews notices a white dust handprint on the back of Ms. Mauldin's dress, he deduces that she and Dunn are romantically involved. He utilizes a ruse that compels Ms. Mauldin to expose her involvement by attempting to flee with Dunn in his plane.

Dan Mathews moves quickly to apprehend Meeker based on an assault charge, but finds that physical evidence implicates Preston as the thief. Morgan is initially dubious, but is ultimately convinced of Preston's guilt and withdraws all charges against Meeker. Dan and his officers travel to the construction yard to arrest Preston and find themselves in a tense confrontation high above a cement mixer.

Cocksure Stanley Wright is a meticulous planner and uses an old-fashioned safecracking method that leaves very little evidence. As an ex-con and a recent arrival to the area, he becomes a strong suspect in a series of safecrackings and Dan Mathews has Officer Larrabee tail him in plainclothes. Wright remains highly confident that, with his wife's help, he can outsmart his pursuers. Wright devises an elaborate plan to crack a jewelry store's safe by slipping his tail while apparently attending a church service. The logistics of his scheme work as planned, but he is unaware that Dan and Officer Johnson have requested area merchants to sprinkle the contents of their safes with a fluorescent powder that can be detected with a special light.

Chicago cabinetmaker John Colter is abducted at gunpoint and repeatedly beaten by a would-be thief who mistakes him for diamond merchant Harry Barlowe. Colter's worried wife Martha notifies the Highway Patrol, but there are few leads until Dan Mathews spots Barlowe (who has a very similar car and license plate) checking in at the Pinewood Motel. When Dan learns that Barlowe is carrying diamonds, he deduces that a thief working with Barlowe's partner Al Dixon is responsible for Colter's disappearance. Dan knows that the injured Colter will be very difficult to find unless the thief can be caught, so he enlists the aid of an attractive female deputy sheriff to set a trap that will lure him into the open.

Fugitive murderer Toby Larkin narrowly escapes being captured by Officer Dennis when he commandeers a car in which Peter and Barbara Monroe and their teenage daughter are traveling. Larkin has little to lose and threatens to kill them all if he is followed, so Dan Mathews and Officer Dennis use an unmarked car and the Highway Patrol helicopter to keep them in sight. They follow the fugitive and his hostages to an isolated vacation cabin in the mountains, but are unable to get close enough to attempt a rescue without being spotted. When Peter Monroe leaves the cabin to get firewood, Dan changes clothes with him as part of a high-risk ruse to get inside the cabin for an attempt to rescue the women. The effort results in gunfire, but only Larkin is wounded and he flees in a panic. The injured fugitive finds himself with the unenviable choice of attempting to outrun the helicopter or returning to the cabin to take his chances in an armed confrontation with Dan.

Farmer Fred Carter's series of apparently random potshots at passing cars draws increasing attention from Dan Mathews and his officers. When Herb Dunlap is killed by one of the shots, investigation reveals that the incident was murder rather than random vandalism. Dan learns that recently released ex-convict Jim Purcell had a grudge against the victim. Purcell is initially a strong suspect, but Dan finds that much of the evidence against him was "planted" by someone else. Dan turns his suspicions to Fred Carter when he learns that Carter also had a grudge against Dunlap. Carter attempts to flee when confronted with the evidence, leading to a gun battle with Dan and his officers in the heavily wooded terrain.

He deserts his girlfriend Fay and flees toward a remote and wooded area where he believes he will pose no danger to anyone else. Dan Mathews, Sergeant Moore, and a radiation expert named Garson pursue Wells in the rough terrain to try and bring him back for emergency decontamination. They learn his approximate whereabouts after he injures a little girl while attempting to avoid touching her. Dan finds Wells and initially wins his confidence by using guile and psychology. However, he is forced to resort to harsher measures when Wells panics again.

During the commission of a robbery, Lester Rutman kills a guard and stows the body in the trunk of his car. He then disposes of the corpse on farmer Martin Jensen's property. Jensen witnesses the act and notifies the Highway Patrol. Dan Mathews and his officers set up a series of roadblocks which Rutman and his partner Collins narrowly escape by turning onto a dirt road. Rutman concludes that a witness must have seen him dispose of the body, so he sets out to identify and eliminate that person. Posing as newspapermen, Rutman and Collins learn Martin Jensen's identity and whereabouts from his wife Jane and are able to subsequently trap them in a barn. The two felons fire gunshots at the barn and a pitched battle ensues when Dan and his officers hear the shots and descend upon the farm.

At a remote mountain cabin, businessman Thomas Corbin angrily confronts his longtime friend and partner William Foster over misappropriation of company assets. Foster kills Corbin with a hunting rifle, transports the body to a muddy and wooded area, and calls the Highway Patrol. Dan Mathews becomes suspicious about the apparent "hunting accident" when he learns that Corbin disliked hunting and that his shoe soles were clean. His suspicions increase when it is revealed that Foster recently took $4,000 in cash from a company account and that he stands to inherit Corbin's share of the business. Dan returns to the cabin to confront Foster, who has become desperate to avoid exposure as a murderer and a thief.

Cowley comes under suspicion when Dan Mathews learns that he recently "lost" his master key to all of Parker's markets. Cowley believes he can outwit Dan by changing his modus operandi and robbing the previously-victimized Lauby Market. Officer Johnson spots Cowley at the Lauby Market immediately after the robbery and Dan subsequently finds the stolen money and the mask at the Cowleys' home. The Cowleys temporarily escape when the reluctant Alberta Cowley holds Dan at gunpoint, but they soon find themselves stymied at a roadblock set by Officer Johnson at Dan's direction.

Tom Thornton is released after serving a 13-year sentence for the murder of business partner Harold Sylvester and the theft of $500,000 in cash and securities. When someone starts redeeming the stolen securities, Thornton again comes under suspicion and continues to protest his innocence of the original crime. Investigation by Dan Mathews and Center City Lieutenant Piersall result in the conclusion that Sylvester is still alive and is cashing the securities. Thornton uses his knowledge of Sylvester's old habits to find his home and confront him. Thornton is now determined to murder Sylvester after all, figuring he will escape further prosecution because of the previous conviction. Dan instigates a series of diversions to try to prevent the killing.

Al Morse and Gene Rogers rob the Ross Industries payroll at gunpoint. When Morse is shot by a guard, Rogers leaves him behind and escapes in a stolen van. Following a prearranged plan, Rogers abandons the van and hides in the basement of Ben and Flo Durfee's diner. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Johnson investigate the robbery and get a description of Rogers from his wounded partner. Flo Durfee (who planned the robbery) senses that Rogers may become a liability, so she kills him in cold blood, drags his body upstairs, and tells the Highway Patrol that she has killed an "intruder" in self defense. Dan and Sergeant Johnson respond and quickly find several holes in her story. Flo senses that her treacherous plans have gone awry, so she abandons Ben, forces her way out of the diner at gunpoint, and attempts to escape in Dan's Highway Patrol car. Sergeant Johnson subdues Ben, enabling Dan to engage Flo in a brief but intense gun battle.

Handyman Harve Case robs local businessman Fred Briscoe of $11,000 in donations to the "Mother's March" for the children's wing of the local hospital. The initial investigation points to beautician Mabel Wayne, a committee member who knew how the funds would be transported. When Dan Mathews travels to Mabel's Hill-Top Beauty Salon to question her, he finds that she had been assaulted by Case after she found him trying to plant some of the stolen money in her salon. Dan learns that Case had previously overheard Mabel and Lucy Briscoe talking about plans for transporting the money. Case fires at Dan and attempts to escape on a motorcycle, but he is soon hemmed in by strategically placed roadblocks.

Ben Gates and Oren Wilkerson utilize taxicabs to quickly stage armed robberies and flee to their own car. They are initially successful in doing so, since most taxicabs look somewhat similar to potential witnesses. The Highway Patrol gives the two men's descriptions (and a special radio code) to local cab drivers. One of the Red Bird Cab Company's drivers picks up the suspects, recognizes them, and discreetly transmits the code. Subsequently, however, he unwisely tries to fight back and Wilkerson murders him before his cab can be located. Wilkerson becomes increasingly nervous and wants to flee the area, but Gates insists that they continue with their plan to stage three robberies before abandoning the cab. When the driver's body is found, Dan Mathews and his officers surmise that Gates and Wilkerson are still traveling in the cab. They move quickly to locate it, and an armed confrontation with Gates and Wilkerson becomes inevitable.

Reformed ex-con Martin Haggard (who suffers from diabetes) is abducted by Peter Barker and Jack Dunning, two former cell-mates who have been ordered to prevent him from testifying against a crime syndicate boss named Bixby. They cruelly lock Haggard in a shed in a remote area, knowing that he will suffer a fatal diabetic shock within hours if he is unable to obtain his insulin. Haggard's frantic wife Joan contacts the Highway Patrol and identifies Barker and Dunning as the likely abductors. Officer Dennis apprehends the two, but they refuse to admit their culpability. They watch developments with cold amusement, since they are confident that Haggard will not be located before the fatal shock sets in. Dan Mathews and Officer Dennis are able to narrow the search to four areas, but they are well aware that they have little time and they must search frantically in a desperate attempt to save Haggard's life.

Country club grounds superintendent Bruno Keeley, who shelters notorious criminals for a price, is forced to shoot and kill fugitive murderer Leonard Gage (a/k/a "Hepner") after he attacks Keeley during a dispute over payment. Keeley hides the body in some brush on the golf course, and plans to remove it under cover of night. However, the corpse is discovered by golfers Dan Mathews and Judge Francis. Investigation reveals that Keeley is allowed to hire his own men, that there is very frequent turnover among them, and that many of his employees have fraudulent Social Security numbers. Keeley feigns ignorance of his employees' backgrounds, but Dan is relentless and eventually questions Keeley's wife while Keeley and armed fugitive George Carroll hide in the next room and monitor the conversation. Dan's persistent questioning eventually compels Mrs. Keeley to acknowledge her husband's involvement in the shooting, so Keeley and Carroll attempt to flee. Dan chases them in the direction of Officer Hoffman's roadblock, where a pitched gun battle takes place.

10-year-old Chet Bates shoots and critically wounds himself while unloading his new .22 rifle and circumstantial evidence makes it appear that his playmate Danny Sears shot him with his foster father's gun. When Danny learns that the Highway Patrol is investigating, he panics and hides in the nearby woods. Chet's furious father Lyle has always regarded Danny with unconcealed disdain and goes after the orphan boy himself. Kindly Pete Burgess befriends Danny and learns the full story of the shooting. Pete's information (along with some ballistics work) enables Dan Mathews to confirm that the shooting was an accident and arrive at Danny's hiding place in time to confront the quick-tempered Lyle Bates.

They escape in stolen cars, but two of the robberies result in murder when Peggy develops a predilection for using her gun. The two are able to pass easily through Highway Patrol roadblocks that have been ordered to look for two men. After the second murder, Dan Mathews finds a lost eyebrow pencil near one of the abandoned stolen cars and advises his officers that the "men" may actually be tall women. Sally and Peggy manage to get through one roadblock, but Dan and his officers quickly converge on their hideout. The two are forced into a high-risk attempt to flee on foot in the rough terrain.

He returns to the small farming community of Sycamore, where his well-meaning daughter Eunice and her husband Jess hope to help him begin life anew. However, Gray's only thoughts are of getting revenge against Dan Mathews for his arrest and conviction. He meets his former partner Stacy Adams and convinces Adams to help with a plot involving a gunfight with two self-righteous local farmers (Crane and Britton) who had threatened to remove Gray from their community at gunpoint if need be. Gray lures the two farmers into a gun battle and has Eunice call the Highway Patrol, correctly figuring that Dan will take the call himself. When Dan and Officer Johnson arrive at the Gables' farm, they quickly realize the true nature of the situation and respond accordingly.

A chance encounter at a roadside diner results in the shooting death of one member of a gang of three holdup men and the abduction of Officer Jimmy Simpson. Alice (the diner waitress) alerts the Highway Patrol and Dan Mathews uses the Patrol's helicopter to follow them in the rough terrain. The two release Simpson after knocking him unconscious, but they take refuge in a remote farmhouse and terrorize its occupant, Mrs. Dean. Given the ruthlessness and unpredictability of the two fugitives, Dan decides to take a chance on helping the frightened woman escape her captors so he can utilize the helicopter to obtain an ideal vantage point for using tear gas to force the criminals into the open.

The robbery results in critical injury to the grocer and the abduction of the only witness - the grocer's 10-year-old daughter, Susie. The terrified girl can neither hear nor speak and elicits sympathy from the compassionate Edith, who eventually convinces Fred to release her in a remote area. Dan Mathews is disgusted that anyone would abduct such a helpless victim and orders an intensive search for the child. When Officer Harper finds her unharmed, Dan discovers that he is able to take advantage of Susie's lip-reading and observation skills to obtain critical information concerning Fred and Edith and their possible whereabouts. When Officer Harper subsequently spots Fred and Edith's station wagon, he chases them back in the direction of Dan and Officer Dennis. An armed confrontation becomes inevitable.

When Dan Mathews and Officer Johnson respond to the burglar alarm from Mitchell Plastics, Lois tells them her story. They do not find any accident victim, since Mike has already dragged Lou to a nearby warehouse where they plan to remain in hiding until nightfall. Investigation reveals that the Parkers are likely suspects, but a series of roadblocks and stake-outs yields nothing. Dan and Officer Johnson then surmise that the Parkers did not get far from the robbery scene due to Lou's injuries. They refocus their efforts on hiding places near the scene and soon find themselves confronting the rapidly weakening Lou and his increasingly desperate brother.

Tobin lures Merchant to a remote area and murders him, but his body and car are discovered by Officer Dennis. When Dan Mathews finds Tobin's address in the car, he goes to the Tobin home and exposes Tobin as a thief and murderer in front of Sally. Tobin flees in his car, unaware that Debbie has concealed herself in the trunk to "hide" from Dan and Officer Dennis. A tense pursuit ensues, with Tobin unaware that Debbie is in the trunk and the officers forced to hold their fire to avoid hitting the terrified child.

During a routine traffic stop, Officer Ben Willkie fails to handcuff Buck Lester, who is on the run for a $62,000 payroll robbery that ended in murder. Lester escapes after shooting Officer Willkie in the back, and Dan Mathews and Officer Larrabee travel to the scene after the critically wounded officer fails to respond to several calls. Lester steals other license plates and, acting on local information obtained from a waitress, he and his wife steer their car onto a little-used back road in an attempt to flee the area. However, Dan knows that the back road is the only way to avoid the Highway Patrol's roadblocks and he and Officer Larrabee are able to set a trap for the cocksure couple.

Ohio policewoman Martha Cole infiltrates a gambling syndicate that has recently moved its "bookkeeping" to Dan Mathews' jurisdiction. When her identity is discovered following the murder of her partner, she is narrowly able to advise Dan of her peril and escape from syndicate supervisor Vince Carter and his henchman Charlie Blake. She is wounded in the escape attempt and must evade Carter and Blake in rough wooded terrain. Dan and Officer Dorsey capture Blake and are able to find the headquarters building where Martha has returned to gather evidence. Unfortunately, Carter has also found her there and is holding her at gunpoint. She manages to break free, but Dan soon finds himself in a bruising fistfight.

Bill and Julie Gibson stage a series of pharmaceutical truck robberies by having Julie drug the drivers when they pick up the purse she "accidentally" drops in roadside diners. They are then able to rob the trucks of narcotics and valuable antibiotics while the drivers are unconscious. When they rob two of the Conroy Drug Company's trucks on the same day, Dan Mathews decides to set a trap. He obtains Mr. Conroy's permission to drive one of the trucks himself while wearing a Conroy jacket and cap, followed at a distance by plainclothes officers. Dan stops at a diner, encounters the attractive Julie. and drinks the drugged coffee so that he and his officers will be able to catch the two in the act of robbing the truck.

Two thieves take advantage of service station customers' goodwill to steal their cars and credit cards, which are used to purchase auto accessories for sale. They victimize Janice Carlisle and tie her up in a remote area, but she manages to free herself and notify the Highway Patrol. Service station owner Jimmy Haden recognizes Ms. Carlisle's car and foolishly tries to capture one of the thieves himself. A scuffle ensues in which the thief is killed and Haden is seriously wounded by his partner, who flees and subsequently hijacks a hunter's station wagon and deer rifle. Dan and Officer Dennis follow him into a heavily wooded area and find that they must use a ruse in order to draw him out into the open.

After three women are murdered following the placement of ads with "Lonely Hearts" clubs, Dan Mathews and Officers Larrabee and Simpson set a trap by having policewoman Faye Nelson place a similar ad. A man calling himself "Herman Warner" answers the ad and Faye finds his manner somewhat menacing, but he leaves without incident. Despite the failed effort, Dan directs Officers Larrabee and Simpson to tail the suspect. When he unexpectedly turns onto a side road, Dan and his officers return quickly to Faye's location and find themselves engaged in a gun battle. They subsequently learn that the entire killing spree was motivated by the suspect's psychotic determination to find and kill his ex-wife "Judy".

After Joe Curran turns his back on the rackets, syndicate hit man Pete Curran reluctantly obeys the order to kill his own brother. Pete stabs Joe to death, but leaves his knife behind. "Supervisor" George Foley knows the implications of Pete's mistake, so he kills Pete with Pete's own gun so it will appear to be a suicide. Dan Mathews knows that professional killers seldom experience remorse and almost never commit suicide, so he deduces that a "supervisor" must have been involved. Dan enlists the aid of Joe's widow Mary to identify Foley. Mary agrees, but she intends to kill Foley herself and slips a gun into her purse. Dan has only a short time to identify and capture Foley AND prevent a third murder.

Mae Loman calls the Highway Patrol with a hysterical (and false) report of a robbery and assault as a diversionary tactic so that her husband Bert can rob a loan company of $8,000 while impersonating a Highway Patrol officer. They decide to rob a nursery later that day using a similar ruse, unaware that the loan office manager has identified Bert. Dan Mathews and his officers notify nearby businesses of the Lomans' modus operandi and nursery office manager Alice Crane calls when she sees Bert outside in a Highway Patrol uniform. Dan and officers Simpson and Larrabee trap Bert in the nursery office. Mae shows up and deliberately blunders into a situation where Bert can take her "hostage" in a last-ditch effort to effect an escape.

"Red" Baker escapes from prison with assistance from Carol Hayes (the widow of his late partner, Fred Hayes). Baker is determined to murder Judge Crosson, who gave him and Hayes the maximum sentences possible. Carol is more than willing to help, since she blames the judge for her husband's death while in prison. When Baker's prison uniform is found, a moulage of nearby tire tracks and some calls to the penitentiary lead Dan Mathews and Officers Garvey and Dennis to Carol. Under intensive questioning, she finally admits that Baker plans to assassinate the judge from a lumberyard across from his regular barber shop. Dan and the two officers corner Baker in the lumberyard, but the felon proves willing to make a kamikaze-like effort to kill the judge.

Dan Mathews arrives at the Aspen Lake Lodge for a long-awaited fishing trip, but finds that the new owners (Farley and Hank) don't seem to care much about fishing. The local game warden advises Dan that there have been other curious changes around the lodge. When drug-runner Billy Severs is found critically wounded on the property, Dan is convinced that the lodge is being used for heroin distribution. He enlists Officer Johnson to set up a roadblock just outside the lodge and stop female "guest" Edith Larkin. This action convinces Farley and Hank that their operation is in jeopardy. They attempt to flee with the heroin they took from Severs' car, but they soon find themselves bottled in by another roadblock.

He is able to depress the "send" button on his radio undetected and the constant signal helps Dan Mathews and his officers utilize "triangulation" radio equipment to pinpoint Hoffman's location. The signal is lost when the felons transfer Hoffman and his motorcycle to a closed panel truck but he is eventually able to depress the button again. Dan enlists the aid of a bus to set up a roadblock that will not arouse Bateman and McNabb's suspicion while he and his officers position themselves for an attempt to capture the felons and rescue Officer Hoffman.

Thanks to a stolen helicopter, lifer Bill Rinker is able to escape from a prison work detail. However, he suffers a serious gunshot wound and needs prompt medical attention to survive. Rinker and his accomplices land at a deserted farmhouse, then abduct a local doctor and murder a local druggist. However, the reports of the druggist's murder and the doctor's abduction help Dan Mathews and his officers to narrow the area of their search. They use the Highway Patrol helicopter to comb the area and ultimately spot the farmhouse. Rinker and his two accomplices are able to get to their stolen copter and take off, but they find themselves unable to evade the Highway Patrol helicopter and hesitant to land because of the phalanx of officers they know will be waiting on the ground.

**SPOILERS!** After a friendly call to Norton's Orchard, Dan arrives at work visibly weakened and obviously ill. Dr. Holmes and Officer Williams ask about his recent meals, since the cause is initially believed to be food poisoning. There is concern that disclosure of a case of food poisoning lead to a panic. However, the doctor and his lab assistant subsequently determine the cause to be exposure to toxicity from organic phosphate. Since that substance is found in insecticides, Dan and the doctor decide to revisit Norton's Orchard to determine whether anyone there has contracted the mysterious condition. They find that young Tommy Norton has fallen gravely ill from the condition and link the cause to the boy's use of an organic phosphate paste, which he mistakenly believed to be whitewash.

Murderous fugitive Ellis Colton is wounded during a bank robbery and narrowly manages to escape. He abandons his car and hides in John Alvin's barn, but Alvin becomes aware of his presence. He subsequently learns that a $10,000 reward is offered for Colton's capture. Despite the advice of Dan Mathews, Alvin foolishly enlists fellow farmers George Bailey and Vance Wells to attempt to capture Colton and collect the reward. The attempt is unsuccessful and Wells is seriously wounded. Dan and Officer Dennis learn what has happened from Edna Alvin and Dan enters the barn, ultimately finding himself in a fistfight with Colton. Dan prevails, and Edna is pleasantly surprised when she learns the details of the reward offer.
