Episode 1

The Search

Irv Desmond is being hotly pursued by Dan Mathews and his officers for the murder of a pharmacist during a failed holdup. However, his handsome appearance and his pleasant personality enable him to stay just ahead of his pursuers by enlisting the unwitting aid of an elderly couple, a brickyard foreman, and the brickyard's secretary Susan Keefe. The somewhat smitten Ms. Keefe even accepts Desmond's invitation to lunch at a roadside diner, unaware that Desmond has already assaulted the foreman during a holdup. Dan and Sergeant Johnson learn from the foreman that Desmond is traveling with Ms. Keefe and that the two may still be nearby. They find the car parked at a roadside diner, but Desmond spots them and forces Ms. Keefe and a diner counterman to try to help him escape one more time. A tense confrontation results in which Sergeant Johnson's gun is trained on Desmond and Desmond's gun is trained on Dan.

Kidnap Copter

Kidnap victim Jerry Watts is being held in a decrepit mountain cabin by his two kidnappers. After a game warden discovers the three in the cabin, he leaves to advise the Highway Patrol. When Officers Dorsey and Garvey investigate, Jerry takes a chance on an escape is and is critically injured. The armed kidnappers remain in the cabin,but are in position to foil rescue attempts. Dan Mathews and Dr. Simmons travel to the scene in the Highway Patrol helicopter in the hope of airlifting Jerry to safety. When the kidnappers fire on the helicopter, Dan orders Officers Dorsey and Garvey repositioned to fire continuously upon the cabin while the helicopter is used to collapse the decaying roof of the old cabin in order to force the two felons out into the open.

Trailer Story

Career criminal Steve Talbot's "final" jewelry heist goes awry when he has to kill the jeweler and is spotted by a bystander who notifies the Highway Patrol. Talbot's inexpensive getaway car breaks down before he can reach the airport and flee the area with his wife Audrey, so he hitches a ride with Jim Rogers and his wife, who are pulling a travel trailer. He subsequently takes Mrs. Rogers hostage in the trailer after a radio broadcast identifies him as a fugitive. Dan Mathews and his officers release the car and trailer from a roadblock, then drive ahead to the airport to capture Audrey Talbot and position themselves for an attempt to capture her husband and rescue the terrified Mrs. Rogers.

Fisherman's Luck

Hank Lloyd and "Red" Strayson steal a $50,000 payroll, but are killed in an auto accident on the way to the Pinecrest fishing resort to meet job mastermind Gil Martin and his henchman Joe. The Highway Patrol impounds the wreck, but Gil and Joe steal it from the impound garage, recover the stolen money, and conceal the wreck in the brush near their fishing cabin. When Officer Dorsey finds the wreck, Dan Mathews and Sergeant Johnson decide to question some of the nearby fishermen. While questioning Gil and Joe, Dan notices that Joe's jeep has paint marks that weren't there previously and surmises that it was used to tow the wreck. Gil and Joe's unsuccessful attempt to escape vindicates Dan's hunch.

Small-time racketeer Vince Garrow is found murdered and investigation reveals that he was providing information to crime expose writer Sam Dahlquist. Dan Mathews deduces that Dahlquist may know the killer's identity and orders an intensive search for the reporter. Racketeer Jake Mallek, the subject of Dahlquist's article, learns that the reporter often does his writing at a remote cabin in the Silver Canyon mountain resort area and he sends his henchmen Greer and Yeager to kill him. Dan and Sergeant Walters finally learn Dahlquist's whereabouts from his daughter Joyce. When they arrive, they have only seconds to prevent Greer and Yeager from setting the cabin ablaze with Dahlquist trapped inside.

Forbes knows that he is in violation of the registration requirements for typhoid carriers, so he flees with his wife Helen. Dan Mathews learns of Forbes' background and orders an intensive search. Helen learns of the Highway Patrol's involvement and convinces Forbes that he needs to turn himself in and face the grief-stricken (and vengeful) Hank Dooley. Dan and Officer Larrabee hear of the Forbes' plans and arrive at the Dooley farm just as the distraught father is attempting to extract armed revenge for his daughter's death.

Hot Rod

Ex-con Harry Burke and his brother Tommy (a skilled mechanic and sometime stock car racer) stage a series of armed robberies, using a hand-built supercharged roadster to escape pursuing Highway Patrol officers. When one of their getaways results in the hit-and-run death of an innocent woman, Dan Mathews and Officers Dorsey and Larrabee redouble their efforts. They obtain assistance from Bert Case, the head of the local hot rod club, to determine who may have a car fitting the description of the Burkes' roadster. They also prepare to establish roadblocks quickly so that they will be in position to intercept the Burkes if they strike again. When the Burkes commit another holdup, they are unaware that Dan and Officer Dorsey have already eliminated the other possible suspects and are headed for the Burkes' home, where an armed confrontation becomes inevitable.

Harry Wilkerson and his partner Bemis pull a series of truck hijackings by staging fake accidents, knowing that most truck drivers will stop and attempt to render whatever assistance they can. They rely upon their confederate "Pop" (the owner of a roadside diner) to supply information concerning which drivers are carrying particularly valuable cargo. After one hijacking, Dan Mathews and Sergeant Walters use tire impressions and testimony from a victim and a hitchhiker to steadily narrow the focus of their investigation. They trap Bemis at the chicken ranch where the stolen goods were unloaded, but must use a ruse in order to trick "Pop" into leading them to the warehouse where the goods are stored.

Oil Lease

Using a bazooka stolen from a U. S. Army facility, supposed Korean War veteran Virgil Stocker and his partner Alfred Davidson rob a $33,000 payroll from the Reiner Oil Company. When they find themselves bottled in by Highway Patrol roadblocks, they return to the oil field and threaten to use the bazooka to destroy the storage tanks and wells if they are not permitted to go free. Dan Mathews and Army Detective Fletcher (a former tank operator) are able to use a scraper with a heavy blade to get within handgun range of the two. Stocker reveals himself to be a pusillanimous fake who never actually saw combat. When he flees, he is easily captured by Fletcher and Davidson finds himself facing Dan Mathews alone.

Ex Con

Reformed ex-con Al Baldwin is unpleasantly surprised when former cell-mates Tom Wright and Frank Jennings visit his rural garage and tell him of their plan to steal $12,000 in cash from the regular farm combine shipment. When Al refuses to help, Wright's wife Delle holds Al's wife Cathy at gunpoint while the robbery takes place. The money is taken as planned, but guard Sid Wells is murdered and Sergeant Walters quickly finds the abandoned truck. He and Dan Mathews investigate and deduce that the Baldwins are in trouble when the nervous Al introduces Tom Wright as his new "helper". They lure Wright away from the house and capture him, but find that they must utilize a high-risk ruse in order to get close enough to rescue the Baldwins and capture Delle Wright and Frank Jennings.

Motel Robbery

Karen Edwards, her older sister Joan, and Joan's husband Bart rob motels by using trickery rather than violence. Their robbery of the upscale Monticello Hotel goes awry when the manager returns to the office unexpectedly and Bart is forced to shoot him. Though critically injured, the manager is able to give Dan Mathews essential information about the perpetrators. At Karen's urging, the increasingly reckless Bart goes ahead with his plans to rob the Eagle Motel at gunpoint. Joan is fearful of facing a murder charge and gives a description of Bart and his vehicle when she and Karen are stopped by a Highway Patrol officer. Dan Mathews spots the car, and is ultimately forced to face Bart in a man-to-man gun battle.

Stolen Car Ring

A thief named Wally steals expensive automobiles, then has one of his two female accomplices (Ann and Norma) forge registration certificates and sell the cars upstate in well-to-do suburbs before their status as stolen cars is widely known. Dan Mathews finds out about the scheme when Officer Dorsey brings in a car theft suspect named Joe Ramo. When Ramo actually turns out to be a victim, Dan and Officer Dorsey check out "cars for sale" ads in higher-income areas upstate. Posing as "Mr. Daniels", Dan answers an ad placed by Ann and is offered a near-new luxury sedan for $3,900. When her background story proves false, Dan and Officer Dorsey enlist the aid of the Lakewood National Bank to set a trap for the three thieves.

Escaped Mental Patient

Haldor Mattern believes he is a famous concert violinist and is capable of being urbane and refined one moment and homicidal the next. When he escapes from Riverhead Hospital, Dan Mathews and his officers set up roadblocks and pursue all leads. Unsuspecting James Wilson offers Mattern a ride and is subsequently murdered. Mattern assumes Wilson's identity and gives a ride to occasional concert pianist Eileen Haley. When Wilson's body is found, Dan is able to surmise the direction in which Mattern is traveling. Mattern becomes highly upset when Eileen Haley looks at his hands and asks about the extent of his musical background. He stops the car abruptly and starts to slowly strangle her. Dan arrives in time to discern what is happening in the parked car and must use guile to try to prevent Mattern from committing a second murder.

Armored Car

Under the direction of Tiny Elton, Don Brueger and Rusty Schilling hijack an armored car and take it to a remote area with a $25,000 payroll AND guard Bill Franklin still in the back. Elton utilizes a ruse to get Bill's wife Lea into his car. He then drives to the armored car's location and threatens to kill her if Franklin does not come out with the money. Bill complies, but the three take the money and keep Lea hostage in an attempt to ensure their safe passage. When they find themselves trapped in their car at a Highway Patrol roadblock, Dan Mathews knows that Elton is capable of killing Lea whether or not the car is released and he finds himself in one of the most intense confrontations of his career.

Migrant Workers

Using inside information from Sandy Collins, Jack and George Willis stop a truck carrying Collins and 11 fellow itinerant fruit pickers, all of whom are carrying their month's pay of $200. The Willises rob them at gunpoint and shoot Joe Valentine when he disobeys their orders and attempts to follow them. Collins gives Dan Mathews false information in an attempt to divert the investigation, but Dan easily exposes the flaws in his story. When Valentine dies, interrogation of Collins intensifies and additional evidence implicating him in the crime is discovered. Collins breaks down and provides information that Dan uses to set up roadblocks that will trap the Willises before they can flee the area.

Ranch Copter

Ranchers Ted and Harry Johnson are openly disdainful of George Wilson, their sister Iris's new city-bred husband who lives on their ranch. George and Iris argue about the situation, and Iris is critically shot and wounded when she foolishly tosses a loaded revolver in George's direction. George panics and flees, but quick-tempered Ted Johnson is determined to exact revenge for his sister's (presumed) death and goes after George with a rifle. Iris subsequently survives an emergency operation and weakly admits that the shooting was an accident. Given this information, Dan Mathews uses the Highway Patrol helicopter for an all-out effort to locate George Wilson and Ted Johnson in the rough terrain before a fatal tragedy occurs.

Amnesia

On a honeymoon camping trip, newlyweds David and Mimi Karney are seriously injured in a fall from a cliff. David has a broken hip and is unable to move. Mimi is ambulatory but is amnesiac and uncommunicative due to a head injury. Sergeant Walters finds her wandering on a nearby road and takes her to a first aid station. Dan Mathews' attempts to question her are unsuccessful, though he learns her identity from an inscription in her wedding ring. Dan organizes a search party when he deduces that Mimi's husband was with her in the rough terrain and that he is probably seriously injured. When the search party is unsuccessful, Dan takes the still-uncommunicative Mimi back to the campsite, hoping that she can provide a clue to the weakening David's whereabouts.

Statute of Limitations

Frank Loring, Eddie Beekman, and Wyatt Beekman robbed the Citrus Trust of $500,000 three years before and plan to flee the country with the money when the statute of limitations expires. When Eddie hits a little girl with Loring's car, Dan Mathews and Officer Garvey investigate and are surprised when John Weber (the girl's father) declines to press charges. Dan quickly deduces that Weber must have received a generous payoff. Dan learns that Eddie had been a suspect in the Citrus Trust robbery and he also learns that Eddie's girlfriend Barbara Franklin plans to leave the country with Wyatt Beekman within days. District Attorney Jason Tyler advises Dan that the statute of limitations on the Citrus Trust robbery will expire at midnight, so Dan and Officer Garvey act quickly to set a trap for the three by "inadvertently" disclosing Barbara's infidelity to Eddie. The quick-tempered Eddie Beekman reacts just as Dan had hoped.

Resident Officer

Patrolman Joe Kline serves as a "resident officer" to a rural area and is required to advise headquarters of his whereabouts at all times. He discovers a marijuana field while hunting and is murdered when he confronts growers Marty St. Clair and Nelson Potter. The two dispose of Kline's body in a remote area and attempt to make his death appear to be a hunting accident. When the normally-reliable Kline does not make his regular call to headquarters, suspicions are aroused and his body is discovered quickly. Dan Mathews rejects the possibility of a hunting accident after he learns that a marijuana leaf was in one of Kline's pockets. Dan deduces that Kline discovered the field while hunting and stakes out the St. Clair farm. He discovers that the illegal plants are being harvested for shipment in a truck driven by Potter, so he sends Sergeant Morris to tail the truck to the distributor before apprehending Potter. When Linda St. Clair learns of Dan's suspicions from store owner Fred Davis, she convinces Marty that leaving the area immediately is worth the risk. They are unaware that Dan is maintaining his vigil and that he is prepared to move in quickly at any sign that they are attempting to flee.

Psycho

Dan Mathews and Sergeants Walters and Merritt answer a call in a remote area concerning a man with a rifle who is taking potshots. The man is on a hill and takes several shots and Dan and the two sergeants, but they are eventually able to search his car. The search reveals that he is novelist Guy Pemberton and that he is undergoing psychiatric treatment and taking a powerful drug for arthritic symptoms. They send for Pemberton's psychiatrist, who advises them that the writer is having a psychotic reaction to the drug and is "acting out" the ending of his latest novel. Since the novel ends with the protagonist's suicide, Dan acts quickly and takes a high-risk course of action that will enable him to get close enough to try to subdue Pemberton and end the standoff.

Counterfeit

A ring of payroll check forgers led by Thad Docker obtains counterfeit (but genuine-looking) payroll checks from a printer named Scovill, who has recently taken over the heretofore legitimate Nonpareil Printing Company. Dan Mathews and Officer Johnson painstakingly eliminate other possible sources of the bogus checks and set a trap by asking area merchants to place an inconspicuous (but unique) marking on each of their legitimate payroll checks. When their stake-out of area merchants catches one of the counterfeit check-passers in the act, Docker panics and attempts to flee the area. However, he unwittingly leads Dan and Officer Johnson back to Scovill's printing shop, where an armed confrontation ensues.

Suspected Cop

Small-time sneak thief Chuck Jackson steals valuable uncut jewels from a car belonging to Professor McKay, a gemologist who was carrying the jewels to be appraised. The theft is not detected until Officer Johnson impounds the car after Professor McKay suffers an ultimately fatal heart attack while driving home. When the jewels are not found in the car, the professor's daughter Ella becomes concerned for her late father's reputation (and her own social standing). She irately accuses Officer Johnson of the theft, since he was the only one known to have access to the vehicle. Newspaper reporter Ed Borden asks Dan Mathews about the incident and Dan realizes that he has only a short time to break the case before the story is published. A credit card receipt found in Professor McKay's car leads Dan and Officer Johnson to the gas station where Jackson is employed and they realize that they have a potential suspect when Dan is able to discreetly catch Jackson stealing an automobile jack from the trunk of his undercover car. Dan and Officer Johnson follow at a discreet distance when Jackson leaves the station to attempt to peddle his largess and an armed confrontation becomes inevitable when they realize he has led them directly to "Mr. Davis", the individual who disposes of his stolen goods.

Trojan Horse

Truck driver Buzz Larkin gets clearance to leave his truck parked overnight on the grounds of the Jarmin Manufacturing Company. During the night, his older brother Whitey and their accomplice Jim emerge from crates on the truck. They assault the watchman, rob the safe of $27,000, and return to their hiding crates in time for the foreman (and Dan Mathews) to permit Buzz to leave the grounds with the truck. Subsequently, Dan learns that Whitey was a convicted safe-cracker and he deduces that the Larkins and their accomplice are the perpetrators. When Dan and his officers arrive at the Larkins' home, Whitey becomes anxious to avoid a return to prison and initiates an armed conflict.

Female Hitchhiker

Warren Childs has two female accomplices (Charlene and "The Blonde") who pose as hitchhikers in order to rob male motorists that are carrying large sums of cash. The Blonde steals $2,500 from businessman Doyle Houston, but is forced to shoot and kill him when he tries to fight back. Dan Mathews investigates the murder and traces Childs, Houston, and the two women back to the Highway Motel. When they learn that Houston had left a nearby restaurant with The Blonde, they realize that Childs and both women have been involved in the crimes. Dan trails the three to a remote cabin and captures Childs and Charlene. The Blonde initially eludes Dan, but her distinctive "Midnight Lure" perfume ultimately proves her undoing.

Nitro

Counterfeiters Henry Warren, Jim Arnold, and Sam Barstowe use a legitimate-seeming front (the "Warren Tungsten Mine") to conceal their operation. They decide to leave the area for awhile and safeguard their counterfeit plates by packaging them in tubes of nitroglycerin and hiding them in their car trunk. Ruthless hoodlum Richard Goff steals the plates and murders Arnold and Barstowe in the process. He also shoots and paralyzes Warren and then steals the car. Dan Mathews and U. S. Secret Service agent Ed Taft trap Goff at a roadblock and take him back to the mine for Warren to identify. They subsequently discover the plates and the nitro in the car trunk and must VERY carefully move the explosives to a safe location.

Motorcycle B

Bud Merrick and Jack Kirch rob area merchants at gunpoint, roar off on their motorcycles, then elude roadblocks by loading the two-wheelers into a closed truck driven by Grayson (their leader). They rob a residence and escape with $10,000 cash, but a telephone lineman spots them loading the motorcycles and notifies the Highway Patrol. Dan Mathews and his officers chase the suspects onto a rural network of dirt fire roads. Grayson hijacks a fire marshal's truck and sends Merrick and Kirch off on their motorcycles. Wearing the marshal's uniform, Grayson attempts to misdirect Dan and his officers. When the effort backfires, Grayson is captured and Merrick and Kirch find themselves bottled in on the narrow and treacherous fire roads.

Officer's Wife

After Patrolman Jerry March is killed in a gun battle with a murder suspect, Patrolman Ed Wylie reluctantly resigns from the force at the urging of his fearful wife Linda. Ed is a valued officer and Dan is reluctant to lose him, so he offers to let Ed take a leave of absence instead. Dan also gets his friend Dave Alden to give Ed a job as a salesman. It quickly becomes obvious that Ed doesn't have the mindset to be a successful salesman and Dan asks Linda Wylie to meet with him concerning Ed's future plans. When Linda arrives for the meeting, she is amazed to find Patty March (Jerry's widow) working as the Patrol's dispatcher. Dan and Patty convince her of the importance of Ed's work and his happiness, and she encourages Ed to return to the Patrol.

Stripped Cars

Phil and Red Hogan hijack and abandon a new-car carrier, store the three new cars in their barn, and prepare to sell them in order to obtain cash to purchase a better farm. A radio broadcast alerts them that the carrier has been found and that its driver has died from injuries sustained in the hijacking. They realize that capture may mean the death penalty and they try to hurriedly dispose of the cars in the remote countryside. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Moore use the carrier's odometer readings to deduce that it was driven only a short distance from where it was found and they are able to narrow the area of their search. When they go to check out the Hogans' farm, the brothers expose their involvement by fleeing in a panic.

Convict's Wife

Niles Brandon escapes from State Prison, killing a guard in the process. After he contacts his estranged wife Betty for help, she reluctantly agrees to provide information concerning his plans to Dan Mathews. Dan and Sergeant Walters stake out the roadside restaurant where an arranged rendezvous was to take place. However, Brandon becomes suspicious, avoids the restaurant, and manages to abduct Betty at gunpoint. The officers learn of the abduction after Betty is able to surreptitiously convince a gas station attendant to call the Highway Patrol. They follow the Brandons into a remote area, where Niles makes a final desperate attempt to escape by abandoning the car. Betty's reluctant lie as to his whereabouts is unconvincing and the escaped convict soon finds himself in a pitched gun battle with Dan and Sergeant Walters.

Reformation

Ray Summers completes a five-year prison sentence for the armed theft of the Proctor Lumber Company's payroll and is released. He is met by his wife Ginny, who has managed well and wants Ray to return the money so that they can begin life anew. Ray agrees and notifies Mr. Gordon, the lumber company's supervisor, of his intentions. When Ray and Ginny travel to their small mountain cabin to retrieve the money, they are tailed by Ray's former partner Frank Brimmer and Brimmer's new partner Sandy Hopak. Brimmer and Hopak plan to allow Ray and Ginny to lead them to wherever the money is hidden, then take it from them by force. They are unaware that Gordon (who was unsure of Ray's true intentions) has already notified Dan Mathews and that Ray and Ginny are under precautionary surveillance by Dan and his officers. Dan arrives at the cabin in time to see Brimmer take the money from Ray and Ginny at gunpoint, and Brimmer is forced to flee on foot down the rough mountain trail, with Dan in close and determined pursuit.

Stolen Plane Copter

When a small plane lands near their prison work detail, convicted murderer James Packer convinces young Billy Belmont (a licensed pilot) to steal the plane and fly both of them to the ranch owned by the young man's family. Warden Osgood immediately notifies Dan Mathews of the escape and Dan orders the Highway Patrol helicopter into action to assist with the search. The stolen plane is forced to crash-land in a remote area when it runs out of fuel. Belmont wants to surrender, but Packer finds a gun in the plane and forces Belmont to stick with him. When they spot the Highway Patrol helicopter, they panic and Packer forces an old prospector to allow them to hide inside his mine. The old man manages to let Dan know that the two are hiding in the mine, and Dan utilizes a ruse to surprise Packer as part of an attempt to capture the two without bloodshed.

Gem Robbery

Acting in concert with gemologist Harold Corbett, George Haley steals $300,000 in rough-cut gems from courier Raymond Harris by threatening to kill his family. Harris reports the robbery, but is reluctant to describe Haley. Corbett hides the gems in the collar of his German shepherd Chief, then arranges for Haley to take the train to Capital City for a flight to Mexico with Chief. Existing leads enable Dan Mathews and Sergeant Walters to arrest Corbett and they finally convince Harris to describe Haley. His description leads them to the train depot where they arrest Haley but are unable to find the gems. The final piece of the puzzle falls into place when Dan asks Corbett's secretary Laura Nelson to remove Chief's collar.

Two wanted holdup men (Monty and Jack) abduct Dr. Elliott and take him to a heavily wooded area to extract a bullet from Jack's shoulder. They are spotted by 10-year old Tommy Evans, who was playing nearby. Tommy returns to his home and calls the Highway Patrol. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Morris respond, but Tommy disregards Dan's directions to stay away from the men and finds himself captured and roughly treated by the increasingly desperate felons. Dan uses a ruse to get Tommy away from the situation, after which he and Sergeant Morris find themselves in an armed confrontation with Monty and Jack. They are handicapped by the necessity to avoid injury to Dr. Elliott, but Tommy manages to help out one last time.

George Roker robs merchants at gunpoint and his wife Lorna poses as a customer who flags down their accomplice Ed Beale immediately after Roker flees the scene. Beale impersonates a uniformed Highway Patrol officer and convinces the victims that they need not do anything further. Flush with success, they continue pulling jobs even after Dan Mathews and his officers have notified area merchants about their modus operandi. When one victim calls the Patrol immediately after the three have fled, Dan is able to determine the direction of their flight and he tracks them to a remote area. He and his officers then block the only road that would permit the felons' escape.

Bonded messenger Henry Wigram is betrayed and murdered by John Grolier, his accomplice in a plot to steal a $20,000 payroll. Planning to abscond with all the money, Grolier is unpleasantly surprised to learn that Wigram had previously handed the money off to his wife Alma before the two men met to stage a fake "robbery". Dan Mathews and his officers are surprised when Alma seems more distracted than upset when she learns that her husband is missing and they deduce that she knows more about the situation than she is letting on. Alma underestimates Grolier's ruthlessness when she tries to use the money as leverage to learn her husband's whereabouts. When Dan finds Alma's murdered body at the Maple Leaf Motel, he realizes that Grolier has probably gone to the Wigram home to search for the money. Dan heads quickly to the Wigram home, where an armed confrontation with the frustrated and desperate Grolier becomes inevitable.

When he reneges on selling, they murder him and go ahead with their plans. Mason's longtime friend Joe Brandon is suspicious of his unexplained disappearance to go on "vacation", and he reports the situation to the Highway Patrol. The activity coincides with narcotics agent Barney Flynn's request that Dan Mathews help with the apprehension of heroin sellers, so Dan and Flynn stake out the diner. They apprehend a known pusher who was seen leaving the diner with a brown paper bag. However, when Joe Brandon attempts to obtain incriminating evidence himself, he is abducted by Sid Rollins. Dan must engage in a high-speed chase and a gun battle to try to rescue the endangered old man.

The killer is able to murder George at the brothers' ranch, but he must locate Tony in the small town of Chatsworth. He learns that Tony is on a picnic with his girlfriend Shirley Conway and tracks them to the picnic grounds. Dan Mathews and Sergeant Morse investigate George's murder and are able to learn of Tony and Shirley's peril. The killer takes Tony from the picnic grounds in his rented car, but Shirley is able to provide Dan with a description of the car and the killer. Dan arrives in time to prevent the killing, but the killer escapes temporarily by getting on a passing bus. Dan gets on the same bus, but two passengers fit the killer's description and he must use all the savvy at his command to avoid the potentially tragic mistake of accosting the wrong man.

Ted Ellis and Ed Kane's planned robbery of Ralph O'Shea's roadside diner goes awry when Ellis nervously shoots O'Shea after he sees him reaching for a gun. The two are forced to flee, taking O'Shea's 22-year-old daughter Kathy along as a hostage. The area is rough and mountainous, so Dan Mathews elects to use the Highway Patrol helicopter to pursue the two felons and their hostage. When Ellis and Kane see that they are being followed, they abandon Kathy and steal another woman's convertible in a panic-stricken attempt to escape the helicopter. After Dan finds that the women are unharmed, he forces a showdown with Ellis and Kane by ordering the helicopter to land on a dirt road just ahead of their stolen vehicle.

Rabies

Widow Alice Marshall and her little girl Kathy are traveling on an extended vacation in their station wagon. Kathy is bitten on the cheek by a puppy at a gas station and the bite goes unreported until the dog shows symptoms of rabies four days later. Because of the proximity of the wound to the little girl's brain, Dr. Elliott of the health department advises Dan Mathews that it is critical that they locate Kathy immediately in order to begin emergency life-saving inoculations. Their task takes on increasing difficulty and urgency because of the ever-changing nature of Alice and Kathy's trip and the rural character of the area, which provides few indications as to their destination or whereabouts. Finally, a tip from a snack stand operator leads them to a remote fishing camp where Alice Marshall had enjoyed a final vacation with her late husband.
