Episode 1
A Gold Coast surfer family enters the witness protection program and winds up in a strange city, under the flight path, miles from the beach, pursued by ruthless criminals; Dad hides out in the local university, with a new job as a criminal psychologist. Troy Quigg and his wife Maree live on Queensland's Gold Coast with their two teenage kids Mitch and Shaneen. An average family happy in the surf and sunshine - until Troy gets caught in the crossfire of a major crime-bust and the family's world is thrown into chaos. They're put into witness protection. Mum, Dad and kids are given new identities and relocated to another city, a thousand kilometres away. Cut off from family and friends, they're warned never to contact anyone from their old life again. They are now and forever to be known as the Swifts - Lincoln, Bec, Mitchell and Tara. The family is under the care of a detective named John Pinder, a maverick who doesn't trust his own colleagues. Bypassing the official safe house, he takes the Swift family to an abandoned squat in the inner city and dumps them there. As a place to de-brief, Lincoln is given an office in the grand old city university - in the School of Psychology. His cover is that he's a post-doctorate in Criminal Psych, but he's warned by Pinder to stay away from the rest of the academic staff and the students. He's told to keep his head down, blend in, meet with Pinder and give up information regarding his erstwhile criminal acquaintances. None of this comes naturally to a guy like Lincoln. He struggles to make it work, with his decidedly non-academic background, his two sharp-tongued kids and his dearly beloved wife struggling to understand how the hell they got here.

Episode 2
Lincoln is set to testify against Nils V., his former boss. Lincoln's statement will be corroborated by a criminal acquaintance named Bobby Chisel, who's in witness protection back in Queensland. Meanwhile, the Swift family tries to get on with life in a new city. Bec is horrified to realise that in the upheaval she's forgotten her daughter Tara's birthday. Rattled, she drives Tara and Mitch to their new school, but on the way she side-swipes a parked car -- and makes the decision to flee. The school itself turns out to be a performing-arts institution, and the cops have sent the wrong paperwork for the kids. Mitch is put into a singing class, and humiliated. He's a surfer, not a singer and he's just fallen in love for the first time, back on the Gold Coast. He wants his old life back. Lincoln goes to the university to meet with Pinder, but the detective fails to show up. Lincoln finds himself drawn into a forensic psychology tutorial, and becomes part of the debate. Bec - broke and desperate - walks into a bank and applies for a credit card, but her new I.D. sets off warning bells in the bank's computer system, and the staff there seek to detain her until police can arrive. Bec realises Pinder is incompetent or crooked. Or both. At the uni, Lincoln sees a news report on TV: Bobby Chisel's been shot dead, his body thrown from a car. So much for witness protection. Bec and Lincoln are faced with two choices: sit back and wait to be killed, or get the hell out of there. They pack up their meagre possessions, grab the kids out of school and hit the road. But with no money, no plan and no petrol, they soon run out of options.

Episode 3
Tara is thrilled to have a new phone; a present from Dad for her birthday. But the SIM- card doesn't seem to work properly and the colour's not quite right, so she tries to exchange it -- and finds out that it's stolen. Tara is devastated. Lincoln is questioned by Pinder about events in Queensland. Pinder accuses him of lying - particularly in reference to a man named Garrett Toop. Lincoln claims never to have met him; Pinder knows otherwise. He accuses Lincoln of being involved in Toop's murder. Disturbed by Pinder's allegations and desperate to learn more via the Internet, Lincoln breaks into the office of a colleague named Dr Isaac Ulrich. Lincoln stumbles across Isaac's criminal psychology research, and is appalled to read of certain links between criminal fathers and their offspring. Lincoln worries that his own criminal tendencies will be passed on to Mitch and Tara. Bec's left alone in the house; she attempts to clean it up and turn it into a decent home for the family. But her work is interrupted when a strange man tries to force his way into the house. The man turns out to be Warwick J Darmody, the owner of the house. He's a mate of Pinder's, and he's supposed to be in rehab. He checked himself out of hospital early, and now he's back to reclaim his home. Tara's fury at her father spills over into a playground incident of terrifying intensity. Her mum and dad are called to the school, and Lincoln is forced to confront the ugly truth about his own behaviour, and its effect on his children.

Episode 4
Lincoln de-briefs with Pinder who presses him for details about Koz Krilich; Koz is Bec's brother and Lincoln's lifelong best mate. Koz and his wife Dimity are expecting their first child, and leaving them behind was the hardest part of the exit from Queensland. Bec misses them terribly; she longs to call them, but it's totally against the rules. Pinder wants information about Koz's criminal activities. Lincoln flat-out refuses to implicate his best mate/brother-in-law. Pinder, frustrated, reveals: it was Koz who financed the attempt on Lincoln's life. Koz got him stabbed. And finally, he must confront his son, and persuade Mitch to leave with him.

His academic research is interrupted by the news that a hit-man named Danny Stoltz has busted out of jail and is now somewhere in Sydney, possibly looking to kill Lincoln. Bec's decision to contact Ash leads to a renewal of their friendship, but as Bec tries to explain her current circumstances, she finds herself spinning so many lies that she's in danger of jeopardising her family's security. But Xan's too frightened to talk to him, and she disappears into the hazy underside of Sydney. Lincoln attempts to track her down. Bec confesses to Lincoln that she phoned her Mum, on the Gold Coast. Tara lies to her parents and organises a secret adventure into the city. As the evening unfolds, Tara's actions combine with the recklessness of her brother to put the whole family into danger. She works with Pinder, trying to piece together the possibilities. At the same time she's dealing with two fragile kids who both believe - with good reason - that they're responsible for their father's kidnapping. Tara in particular is right on the edge of breakdown, as she waits for news of her Dad. Lincoln discovers the unbearable truth about his erstwhile colleagues: Koz and Nils were into mischief way beyond mere drug dealing. As Lincoln desperately fights for survival, he discovers that the life he's led so far has been a sham. Unwittingly or otherwise, he's allowed himself to be used as a pawn in a game with consequences more profound and horrific than he'd ever imagined. Lincoln finds himself in a battle to the death with baby-faced assassin Danny Stoltz.

Episode 8
Having barely survived the assassination attempt by Danny Stoltz, Lincoln knows that Sydney is no longer safe. He tries to convince Bec to run with him and the kids - to flee further south, to start a new life somewhere else. However, Bec's uprooted the kids once before and she's reluctant to do it again. She's also been contacted by Brianna - Bec and Lincoln's first-born child, who was given up for adoption at birth. Bec wants to stay long enough to reunite with her daughter, no matter what the risk. She also believes that Pinder can protect them, at least until the meeting with Brianna goes down. But Pinder has some terrible news of his own. His maverick style and fast- and-loose accounting methods are now beginning to catch up with him, and he's given an almighty shock at Police HQ. The case is unravelling, and so too his ability to protect the Swift family. Lincoln's enemies meanwhile have the scent of blood. They're closing in, and finding him and killing him off once and for all is only a matter of time. As matters at the University build to a head, Lincoln's various worlds collide - and the result is an epic, terrifying showdown as blood is shed on the University lawn.
