When the body of Mali Pryce is discovered in a river in the Snowdonia National Park, DI Cadi John and DS Owen Vaughan are brought together to try and piece together the location and movements of the deceased in the years following her disappearance in 2011. The discovery of the body opens old wounds in the community, and Mali's father is furious with what he sees as police ineptitude. District nurse Lowri Driscoll battles with the unwanted attention of her ex-boyfriend, while Cadi tackles her own personal problems as she deals with her father Huw's failing health and family arguments with her sisters. The strange relationship between Dylan Harris and his mother Iona reaches crisis point.

DI Cadi John and DS Owen Vaughan pay Sara Dean, an old school friend of Mali's, a visit and they learn about how troubled Mali's past was. Cadi and Owen discover a possible link between Mali's disappearance and the disappearance of Llinos Evans, a girl who disappeared from foster care in 2007 at age 15. Meanwhile, Dylan spots carer Lowri in a gas station. He develops an unhealthy interest in her and unsuccessfully attempts to abduct her as she visits her mother's house. His dark, predatory side is impossible for him to control.

The police investigation enters a new phase when DI Cadi John and DS Owen Vaughan are called to the scene of a potential kidnapping in the middle of the night, and their concerns that a serial kidnapper is on the loose are confirmed, but a shocked Lowri Driscoll isn't able to offer any information about the identity of her attacker. Lowri's boyfriend is questioned by Cadi and Owen, but they have no evidence to link him to the attack. They track down the vehicle involved, but find it is listed as belonging to a "William Parry", who died some years previously. Dylan Harris has an explosive outburst at Carn Ddu quarry after he is sacked, which leaves his boss Delyth Hughes worried about his mental health. And two worlds collide when Cadi's sister Elin treats Dylan's wound in the hospital. Student Megan has a breakdown after losing her coursework. Fleeing from university, she tries to take her own life and inadvertently falls into the hands of Dylan, who is actively searching for another victim.

Dylan takes Megan prisoner and locks her in the cellar of a derelict house on his farm. He disposes of his truck by hiding it under covers, and starts using an old van. Dylan's mother Iona, who treats both Dylan and his daughter Nia with contempt, is angry and refers to Megan as a "whore". When PC Mari James and PC Ryan Davies pay a routine visit to ask Dylan if he knows anything about Mali Pryce, Dylan manages to convince PC Ryan Davies that he knows nothing. However, PC Mari James's suspicions are aroused by this peculiar man who lives in the middle of nowhere.

Cadi and Owen investigate a link between the case and the death of schoolgirl Anna Williams, who was found dead two days after she disappeared in 2005. Although her uncle, Endaf Elwy, was convicted of the crime, Cadi becomes doubtful and seeks permission to interview him. A visit to the owner of the reclamation works where Elwy was working at the time of the murder fails to turn up any leads. DI Cadi John sees that her father's health is rapidly failing, and as she realises that her ex-DCI father may have been critical in the wrongful arrest of Endaf Elwy, she knows that she will need to have a difficult conversation with him. Meanwhile, Lea Pryce goes to see Ieuan Rhys, desperate for some kind of connection with her late sister. Ieuan toys with her, and Lea finds herself out of her depth and having to deal with a dangerous and violent man. To add to the complications, Cadi finds that her ex-detective father was involved in the original investigation.

Cadi explores the possibility that the wrong man was convicted of Anna Williams's murder, but an interview with Elwy results in his panicking and obtains no useful information. Megan's best friend reports her missing, and Cadi realises she may be dealing with another abduction victim. Megan tries unsuccessfully to get Nia to help her escape from the cellar. The investigation turns to the possibility that the abductor is a former co-worker of Elwy's and a former schoolmate of William Parry.

The police investigation culminates with DI Cadi John realising who the serial kidnapper is, and all available police are released. However, on reaching the house, the kidnapper is long gone, and the manhunt continues. Nia, Dylan's daughter, performs a brave act that is beyond her years. The long-simmering tension between Alun Pryce and Ieuan Rhys reaches a boiling point as both men realise that there is no amicable resolution to their argument. Desperate to atone for his mishandling of the Endaf Elwy case, Huw John begs Cadi to make things right. The professional and familial pressures on Cadi mount.

With Iona Harris under arrest and Nia Harris safe with child support workers, all of DI Cadi John and DS Owen Vaughan's attention is focused on Dylan Harris and bringing him to justice for all the suffering that he has caused. This goal is especially personal to Cadi, who is working to atone for her father wrongly accusing Endaf Elwy of a murder that Dylan committed. Megan Ruddock realises that whilst her ordeal with Dylan is over, the journey to full recovery and acceptance of who she is a longer one. Life will never quite be the same for those affected by Dylan's actions.
