Lenny Thornber is a malicious juvenile delinquent and thief holding a small village in fear of reporting him. After Maureen O'Callaghan courageously makes an official complaint against him, he sets fire to her car in revenge. DCI Adams recruits Hetty to investigate. With Geoffrey posing as her son, she poses as Maureen's sister-in-law from Ireland in order to move around freely and gather evidence against him and his associates.

Dawn Langley, a well-to-do woman, hires Hetty to find out why her soon-to-be-married daughter Carloline is being stalked and photographed by a 30-something stranger to the village. Another stranger, a 50-something Australian, sends an expensive bunch of red roses to the house, and Hetty thinks that it's not a coincidence. Adopting Australian accents, she and Geoffrey, who poses as her son, make the rounds of hotels in the area to find the enigmatic stranger from Down Under.

Uncle Mo, an elder of the local Anglo-Indian community, hires Hetty to investigate a series of muggings of middle-aged Indian restaurant owners by a ski-masked gang of young thugs who may be Hindus too. He resists Hetty's recommendation to bring the situation to the attention of local police authorities because he worries about the embarrassment to the families of the guilty parties. When a frustrated Hetty is about to inform the police of the situation, she herself is attacked and her purse snatched. She decides to stay on the case as things become personal.

Janet Fraser, distracted by her mobile phone, inadvertently rear ends the car in front of her causing a minor fender bender. Lillemore Pickering, the woman driving the other car, is so overcome with road rage that she punches Fraser repeatedly in the face. The only eyewitness, a long-distance jogger, remembers the plate umbrella but a disoriented Fraser neglects to get his name. When the police don't prioritize her case, she hires Hetty to discover the woman's identity.

Visiting Robert's niece Peggy and her husband Malcolm, Hetty learns that their son Tom has been expelled from school after an Ecstasy tablet was found on him. Hetty is convinced that he was framed and, with the headmaster's cooperation, goes undercover as a dinner lady, meeting Karl 'Bomber' Ashby, the school bully and his gang who have taken revenge on Tom after he has refused them money. Geoffrey also goes undercover as a pupil but after his identity is revealed Hetty has to rescue him.

Hetty agrees to represent her friend Dora at a creditors' meeting after Ray Lever's furniture shop goes into liquidation and Ray disappears. Ray's unhelpful ex-wife Sandra tells Hetty the enterprise collapsed because he was a poor businessman but printer Brian Powell,another creditor, is convinced that Ray has run off after milking the firm dry. Hetty and Geoffrey trace Ray through his recently sold car but when they track him down they discover that Brian Powell has a far more personal and vengeful motive than he led them to understand.

In hospital for the removal of varicose veins Hetty sees DCI Adams,who has a prisoner under escort in a private ward and who warns her that several patients have been burgled whilst away from their homes. When young nurse Deborah Woolmar trumps up a sexual assault charge against Adams Hetty realises that this is an attempt to discredit him as the ward sister is rather too friendly with the convict - who just happens to be the brother of a pair of smugglers who are also robbing the houses.

Hansi Bauer, an elderly German living at Coverdale Hall retirement home, asks Hetty to locate his sister Irmgard, whom he has not seen in thirty years. In fact, Irmgard has died, but she has a son with whom Hetty eventually reconciles Hansi. However a further problem arises when somebody at the home persecutes Hansi with vicious stunts suggesting that he was a Nazi - which he was not. Suspects include a war widow and an ex-POW but Hetty, working undercover as a resident, discovers that greed rather than hatred is the motive.

Episode 9

Hetty is approached by antique dealer Monty Francis,who is fleeing the thuggish young Flintoff brothers. They gave him an expensive clock to value - which he believes to be stolen - and now want it back. Hetty learns that the boys do some smuggling of porn videos but are really in fear of their formidable sister Conchita,from whom they have stolen the clock. Geoffrey's girlfriend Janet takes on a marital case for waitress Bryony,whose father Donald is also seeing Conchita,though things are not exactly as they appear.
