Everyone in her village thinks nosy spinster Helga Allowby is sending noxious poison pen letters. Some recipients move out of the village, one man attempts suicide, and mistrust pervades the village. Helga wants Hetty to prove her innocence, so she comes undercover as Tara Hall, a visiting painter and asks Helga to send her similar letters to lower the villagers' suspicions. Meanwhile Robert and Geoffrey take a case on their own: checking out the fiancée of an older rich man. They set a trap for her with a handsome friend of Geoffrey's--will she or won't she? Hetty begins to think Helga IS the author of the letters, but there may be another candidate, even more unlikely.

Why are the finalists of the Blainthorp Music Festival's Golden Voice contest all starting to lose their voices? The organizer hires Hetty Wainthropp to determine why, but the real client is the sponsor, the owner of Hardiman Herbals. He is offering the winner not only 500 pounds, but the position as radio/TV representative of the company. Hardiman insists Hetty and Geoffrey use his home as a base; they turn up many suspects: a competing herbalist, desperate contestants, resentful rivals, and one complication from Hardiman's past. The bad publicity and the 50% loss of finalists forces Hardiman to recruit Hetty as the judge; she then brings the culprit to face Hardiman and reveal the real reason for the sabotage on his beloved Golden Voice competition.

A son accidentally kills his elderly mother and leaves her body in their shared farm for someone else to discover, thus relieving some of his guilt. By chance he picks up two mentally challenged runaways and drops them off at their farm hoping they will be the ones to discover her. Meanwhile, Mrs. Wainthropp has been hired to find the mentally challenged daughter of a local Mayor and his wife. Obviously the two incidents are linked and eventually all loose ends are tied up.

The hard-working daughter of an elderly, recently widowed pensioner feels her gullible mother is being financially bilked by a gypsy clairvoyant who claims she can contact her dead husband and hires Heddy to expose her. DCI Allen has his eye on the phony psychic too, but when his undercover agent on the case is found out. he works with Hetty to expose the fraud, Hetty uses Geoffrey to follow the medium's daughter, but he ends up becoming romantically involved with her - much to Hetty's displeasure.

The grown daughters and son-in-law of an older woman who's been recently widowed suspect that the photographer she's been seeing after having a cosmetic makeover is a fortune hunter with a history of involvements with older women for financial gain. They hire Hetty in hopes of exposing him.

An abused wife has been placed in an isolated country shelter for battered women, but when she is surprised in town by her estranged husband and is killed accidentally by a van when she flees. DCI Adams considers it was no coincidence that he knew where to find her, but can't prove conspiracy in her death. After Hetty accidentally falls down the stairs and gets a nasty facial bruise, he persuades her to go undercover as a battered wife at the home and try to uncover the truth about the fatal accident.
