Welcome Home

After the family attends the funeral for Dot's friend Betty Sarah is feeling depressed and keen for herself and Jack to move into their own home. However Jack is summoned to work on the Advertiser to publish yet another story on the closure of the local glue factory. Whilst Vicki admits to Sarah that she is a budding poetess Pauline gets a job with an estate agent but is too honest to make a sale. Then, at the will reading, Dot learns that Betty has left her her house so she engages Pauline to sell it at a pittance to Vicki and Sarah and Jack.

Easy Tiger

Whilst Sarah decorates the nursery, helped by the gigantic Big Keith, who recommends the best food to satisfy a pregnant woman, Jack gets a call from a publisher for a book deal. Unfortunately the book in question is his diary, accidentally submitted, in which there are some very critical comments about Sarah. Pauline is continually belittled at work by her smug boss Ralph but gets one over on him when, after she and Joe have visited his doctor, she sells the doctor a house. Dot moves in with Joe and Pauline, attracting the attention of adoring fellow pensioner Arthur (which she rebuffs) whilst pregnant Denise feels she is losing her friendship with student Vicki.

Knocking About

Following an ante-natal class Denise and Sarah bond for a girls' afternoon out, Sarah still unaware that Jack is writing his book about her whilst an irritated Vicki, posing with Gervaise for the cover of his vanity album, is pleased when her old flame Lindsay drops by. Gervaise is less enthusiastic. Meanwhile Pauline goes away on a training weekend, forbidding the family to use her 'good room' but Joe disobeys her to watch the big screen TV and Dot invites her friends round. Arthur also appears ,to court Dot, but breaks a figurine in the 'good room', causing Joe to order them all out.

Stairway to Hebburn

Pauline quits her job to start a successful career in baking and selling cup-cakes from home whilst Vicki accompanies Gervaise to the Stairway To Hebburn recording studio. Gervaise is annoyed when Lindsay offers to do session work and proves to be a superior musician and airs his dislike of the man in the pub though Lindsay is honourable enough not to give in to his old feelings for Vicki. Sarah is surprised when her hen-pecked father Ben turns up having escaped his controlling wife Susan but she arranges a reconciliation - on Ben's terms. However she unwittingly prevents Jack from confessing that part of his diary will be published in the local paper.

Still Swayze's After All These Years

The Daily Telegraph publishes an extract from Jack's diary recounting Sarah's irritation during her pregnancy. He aims to hide it but Denise discovers it and demands he tell his wife though Sarah sees it first and, as a result, goes into labour. Vicki and Denise take her to hospital, where she gives birth to a son and tells Jack he should be more honest with her. Afterwards at the celebratory party in the pub for which Pauline has made three hundred cup-cakes Vicki ditches Gervaise for Lindsay.

Gas and Air

Home with the baby Sarah learns that she has gained her PhD and has been offered a research post in Zurich. She is initially reluctant to go but is encouraged to take the opportunity by all the family, even Pauline after early resistance which ends in her calling time on her cup-cake business and everybody gathers to wave Sarah and Jack off. Vicki ditches Lindsay as she finds him too controlling but devastates Gervaise by telling him she wants to be single whilst Denise gives birth and agrees to marry Ramsey - even though he is not the baby's father.

Sleep in Hebburnly Peace

On Christmas Eve Jack and Sarah and the baby turn up for the holiday. So do her parents Ben and Susan, with Susan's rude, snobbish invalid mother Millie and the three of them have to sleep over when their car is stolen. Next day Joe has to forfeit some of his presents to them whilst Denise is offered the car as a present. Millie tries everybody's patience, locking horns with Dot and refusing to wear her party hat. Whilst the menfolk and the youngsters go for a post-lunch drink in the pub Susan confides in Pauline that she hates her mother and the two women become friends at last. The car is returned, Sarah and Jack both admit they hate Zurich and want to return home but felt the other wanted to stay, Gervaise proposes to Vicki and Dot gets one over on Millie by presenting Arthur as her lover.
