Young Geordie Jack Pearson returns home to Hebburn with Sarah,whom he married in Las Vegas whilst drunk though they are keeping the wedding secret. Sarah is Jewish,causing Jack's gushing mother Pauline to make impromptu bagels whilst telling Jack to convert the spare room into a bed-sit for her elderly,disabled mother Dot. Pauline's husband Joe announces his retirement from the Merchant Navy. At a celebratory evening in the local singer Gervaise tries to get back with Jack's sister Vicki,whilst a mobile phone being used to take a family group photo reveals the evidence of Jack and Sarah's wedding.

A week after the homecoming Pauline is still annoyed with Jack for marrying in secret as the family moves granny Dot out of her care home,where care assistant Denise is being pursued by love-lorn Ramsey. To get in her good books he throws Dot a going away party but only succeeds in getting the old ladies drunk. Gervaise is equally unsuccessful with Vicki but Jack hopes Pauline will forgive him as he has a book deal worth thirty thousand pounds and can give up his job with the local paper. To appease Pauline Joe suggests another wedding in Hebburn but Sarah is unhappy to see the money being blown. to make things worse the book deal falls through after Jack has quit his job and he and Sarah have to move in with his parents.

Sarah's parents,Susan and Ben,arrive in Hebburn where Pauline is busily learning Yiddish to impress them. The initial meeting is full of awkward silences - until it turns out that Sarah's parents were at the wedding in Vegas. Domineering Susan wants the second wedding to be in York,their home town,as opposed to Hebburn,as formerly agreed. However Dot comes to the rescue financially - insisting the location and arrangements are on her terms. Ramsey proves himself to be a hero - if a somewhat bruised one - when truculent Jarrow lads invade the pub on the night of the fancy dress contest and insult Denise.

Pauline puts Joe on a diet and Dot buys Vicki a car which runs out of petrol in an unfamiliar part of town. Jack goes for an interview with the Barnsley Gazette but his over-confidence and obvious dependency on Sarah to prompt him let him down. Back in the pub the retiring editor of the Hebburn Advertiser offers him employment,which he accepts - but only after learning that Sarah is pregnant.

Now editor of the Hebburn Advertiser Jack is frustrated by the total lack of news worthy stories. Sarah's sister Marial - born Miriam - arrives and tries to bring down Jim's high blood pressure with alternative therapies. Marial joins Pauline,Dot,Denise and Vicki in taking a reluctant Sarah out for a hen night.Sarah and Denise find out that they are both pregnant and Vicki claims Denise's positive pregnancy kit result is her own to stop Gervaise from leaving for Great Yarmouth. Marial,surprisingly,cops off with Jack's large friend Big Keith when the hen and stag parties meet up in the local,where they are regaled by geriatric stripper Clarty Carol.

The day of Sarah and Jack's second wedding dawns with Dot planning everything on a lavish scale. Joe gives his son a pep talk and his grandfather's watch before joining the other menfolk in the pub whilst Pauline recounts her own 'lovely' wedding. Susan and Ben arrive and join Sarah and the bridesmaids at the church though the boys are late in arriving,due to grandfather's unreliable watch. As the ceremony is about to start Joe has a stroke and is rushed to hospital - which is where the wedding takes place!
