Five-0 investigates the murder of McGarrett's CIA agent and veteran friend Harrison, whose colleague, Steve's ex Greer, asks Five O's help, suggesting there must be a mole within the CIA. After a trusted CIA bigwig confirms a pattern of killing off five other CIA agents in the Pacific, presumably by the Chinese, McGarrett's agrees to a plan to let himself be captured in order to find the mole and MO, only to find out it's none other than Greer. While in a sensory deprivation tank, Steve dreams that Wo Fat is responsible. McGarret decided to bury the cash Kamekona loaned him in a hole he and Junior dig in his backyard, but had to abandon this to wind and canine dispersion. Tani struggles to find the nerve to tell McGarrett about the presumed, unchecked murder weapon to Adam's sister in his house.

With an increase in 911 calls, Tani and Junior are detached to assist the HPD, but during an arrest a man 'joyrides' their car, just for the air-conditioning. Ever-greedy Kamekona triples prices at his Shaved Ice stand when his competitor suffers a blackout, only to have the stand toppled over and damaged by angry customers. While at the grocery store, Jerry handcuffs an ice robber, only to cave in for his motive. At the golf course, Grover drags his sun-struck caddie Gary along as witness while he beats his best-ever score -at par- as the heat suppresses his knee trouble.

Young Jerry witnessed a murder while at camp in 1982. He's telling this story to his friends while going back to the camp in the present day. He wants to search for the body before developers level the property. A woman watching a news story about a murder realizes that her daughter drew a picture of the crime scene three days earlier. Jerry's most likely site for the body is on the property line of Bo Bradley, who Jerry thinks is the Axe Man. McGarrett and Junior interview the girl. Katie. She says her friend Molly drew the picture. Noelani shows up to help hunt for the body with ground-penetrating radar. in 1982, Jerry breaks into Bradley's house and ran away screaming after Bradley finds him. Noelani finds a bone, but it's canine. Jerry keeps digging because he thinks there's a body underneath, while everyone else leaves as it starts pouring. Three of Katie's pictures were drawn by someone else. Katie's parents see this girl, Molly, on the monitor but she escapes. Everyone's phones and keys are missing at the camp. Tani finds a woman that may have been attacked by the murderer. McGarrett thinks the drawings may be three different redheads. Jerry found human remains, but he's being followed by someone. Gordie knocks on the door and spooks everyone. He took the keys and phones. He goes to get them, but his throat gets slashed. It's the ax man, who set the cabin on fire. They have to run out, but Bradley shoots the ax-man, who is the kids' old camp counselor. The serial killer is Molly's father, who went nuts when her mother divorced him. Jerry goes back to thank Bradley and apologizes to him. Molly's mother comes to get her. Captain Keo said the gun in Adam's house was the one that killed Noriko.

McGarrett receives news that his former fellow Navy SEAL team member Carson Rodes was killed landing a private airplane o an aircraft-carrier and is officially the prime suspect in a baby kidnapping case. Duly fearing cocky NCIS agent Emma Warren incompetent to solve the case, McGarrett ignores having no jurisdiction, sneaks his team onto crime scenes and after ignoring warnings for interferes with the investigation ends up arrested, only to be released on governor's order and offers to collaborate. So Five-O can demonstrate how to crack the nuts, from identifying the baby boy as 'loot' in a bloody shootout to the sinister parental issues. Meanwhile, Adam is back in Hawaii, crushed after he and Kono had broken up. Tani hesitates with the decision to turn in Adam because of the gun discovered in his home but later finds out that someone actually trying to set Adam up, and Steve recruits his for F-O.

In present day Hawaii, during the soft opening of McGarrett and Danny's restaurant, a retired cop tells McGarrett that he was best friends with and had worked with Steve's eponymous grandfather back in the 1940s. He gives Steve 'Junior' their file for an unsolved 1940s case for him to investigate, the only one the legendary whip-cracking, unarmed first native detective never cracked. While working through the case contents, McGarrett dreams he is his grandfather and the rest of the Five-0 team are all involved in the unsolved disappearing of Leyla, native housemaid of a plantation owner and crime baron, who had a secret affair with his son, who was murdered by the rival gang.

Steve concentrates on hosting a last big party for Thanksgiving at the restaurant before selling it off to Mamo Kahike. A robber was fatally crushed while trying to carry a safe downstairs. Junior, Adam and Tani trace it to a volunteer at a local homeless shelter who serves their annual festive dinner despite the robbery victim having canceled his donation for fiscal reasons. Lou has trouble hosting his family dinner when his dropout brother Lou and his brother Percy Jr., bossy mother and father Percy Sr. visit for Thanksgiving. The ever-bickering brothers turn cooking Thanksgiving dinner into a competition for the best turkey, stakes being Percy staying away for years or Lou signing as guarantor for his restaurant, but an alternative is found after a fire starts in Lou's kitchen during their fight gone physical again.

He leaves the team research in Hawaii and travels alone, even without junior, to retired Joe White's ranch in Montana, where they also receive Tim Cole, the last other survivor -besides uncooperative jailed CIA traitor Greer- of their SEAL team which was to kill jihadist terrorist leader Hassan but spared his then 10-year-old son Omar, now a vindictive businessman. The rest of the Five-0 looks into the person who is trying to seek revenge. When the SEAL trio stand a gun battle against a dozen assassins, those and Joe get shot and he later dies from hopeless liver injuries, near his dream tree.

Despite Danny's ex Rachel Hollander's continuous inadequacy, sharing the fear for Grace and learning her second marriage is another failure, they seem to reconcile.

They find the motive must concern the illegal rare metal mining prospecting, but also that the oxygen is running dangerously low due to sabotage. Steve doesn't wait for the coast guard rescue, which can't arrive in time, but races by speedboat with Danny, who can't stop him from delivering oxygen by dangerous rapid dive.

Steve's team must follow his bloody trail before he can strike, seeking clues from his seemingly converted former cellmate Roger Barton. Grover confides he once dealt with a similar situation in Chicago.

The initial fatal OD victim inadvertently robbed the wrong drug from the actual suspect dealer, whose trail leads to a gym, where super-fit Junior and Tani go undercover at a local gym as potential buyers.

Junior's semi-dodgy friend Hilo comes clean having helped a junkie sell to a scary teen girl a .38 caliber revolver, which McGarrett and the rest of the Five-0 members find to be a "community gun", used in over 47 cases including multiple homicides, so it's about impossible to work out who commit which with it. The gun was last used to murder the beached-up stepfather of buyer Bonnie, Owen Pearsen. The gun was surprisingly somehow connected to multiple Five-0 members: used to kill Duke's former partner, in a cold case of Steve's cop dad John, a deadly shop-robbery Danny walked into the day he moved to Oahu, and was used by Tani's ex-boyfriend who was a gang banger and let her softy 'kid' brother play macho with it.

Borrowing an apartment to run surveillance, Steve and Danny find that a senior childless victim from a previous case has left Steve her porcelain cats collection and her rare breed cat to a doting ex-con neighbor, who is disqualified, but neither detective can take a feline, so Danny hastily sees it's adopted by a third party.
