Furthermore, two men were killed alone, and medieval ivory chess pieces found on them. They are both serial killers, and the stolen ivory stems from a heist connected to recently paroled Pierre Shaw, who proves an elusive parkour master.

Chin and Kono, who longs for Adam's impending early parole, smell a rat but have a hard tie localizing Steve, even with Jerry's help, as his GPS was shipped by unsuspected courier van. Gray doesn't fall for talking over tricks, and brings in her 'chess king and queen': serial killer couple Donals and Mallory Witten, who eagerly drive off to dispose of the hostages, who find themselves dumped in a tide-flooded cave trap, where Steve must dive like SEAl again to prevent Alicia drowning, thus becoming her hero.

When an armored vehicle crashes into a gun club, the team is called in. They arrive and the vehicle just stays there, it suddenly moves and stops. Steve goes to apprehend the one inside but he parked on top of a manhole and made his escape. Steve wonders what he was doing, Steve learns the owner keeps some exotic guns and they were all taken. Steve thinks he's going to sell them and there's a man who's a collector of guns whom Steve thinks is the buyer. So they go to the man's house and find him dead. The perp then posts something online that's anti-gun. So they think the perp is an anti-gun guy. They think he's going after all gun advocates but there are so many of them. Adam after getting released, asks Kono to help him find the daughter of an inmate he befriended, who hasn't seen his daughter since he was locked up.

On Halloween, Danny can't resist playing another mean prank on his forensic cousin Eric Russo when Five-O is called to examine the death from sheer fright of the inhabitant of the island-wide renowned haunted house. It's retired medium and paranormal author Marjorie, whose PA swears she also noticed spooky events, even alone. The team finds special effects and possible motives abounding with tricked clients and illusionist Nathan Betts, who swore to unmask her. When Adam and Kono stop for a car crash victim, they find her driver mate missing although she was crushed unconscious, and following the bloody trail into the jungle are knocked down by masked men dragging them to heir compound. The trio is handcuffed for bloody slaughter, but thanks to Adam escapes to a senior's desolate home, finding him in cahoot and improvising a stand against the horde of sectarian maniacs. Meanwhile Jerry babysits Charlie seasonally and finds party-banned Grace reluctant to come along trick and treating.

When Grace goes to her Winter Formal, Danny offers to chaperon because he wants to know who her date is. When he discovers who it is, he takes him to the bathroom to talk. It's while they're in there that some men with guns come in and take everyone hostage. Danny stays hidden. He can't call anyone because they jammed the cellphones. Eventually Danny confronts one of them and the one he's with thinks he knows why they are here. Grover goes to check on his son who is also there but the guy on the outside won't let him in. But Grover insists on going in that's when he pulls a gun. Grover then calls Steve to come. They eventually find out what's going on and realize they have to go in but they need to know who they are and where they are. The people inside learn about Danny and threaten Grace unless he surrenders which he does.

The case links to recent theft, parole officer Berris and his brother, who employs 'promising' ex-cons as a favor.

Meanwhile crime scene cleaner Gerard Hirsch needs help to get a bank loan, systematically refused to an ex-con, so Adam works out a business plan yielding a surprise investor.

Chin's girlfriend, Inspector Abby Dunn having got injured setting up a barricade, it's impossible to stop it safely and won't run out of gas for days. Steve calls his team from the chase for a daredevil SEAL-style plan, deemed suicidal not just by Danny: he's going to jump from a tunnel on the truck, penetrate the roof, free the girls. He does start loading them from the back but is noticed and confronted inside, so the evacuation must be abandoned, forcing him to even more reckless improvisation.
