When the police pull a woman's body from the ocean Harry is surprised when it doesn't turn out to be the Admiral's wife but a friend of hers...and it turns out she was murdered and not a drowning victim. Harry now believes that Andrea Tannehill is alive and in danger somewhere and continues searching with renewed interest.

Harry's investigation uncovers who the killer is, why he's killing, and culminates in the resolution of Father Paul's crisis of faith as well as the takedown of the murderer.

At the time, Yorkfield's wife did not want to help Harry find her husband. Now, the tables are turned and she goes to Harry for help. Her daughter Shelly needs a kidney transplant and Dad's blood type is the same as hers. Harry goes back through his old case file, gets new clues from the now cooperative wife, and wins over young Shelly, all the while dodging two mob hit men. Harry eventually finds Yorkfield, but that's not the end of the drama.

Harry takes on the role of bodyguard reluctantly. Meanwhile. Dr. Kira is none too happy about having her life disrupted. At first, she is resentful of being cooped up with Harry in seclusion. After an attempt is made on their lives, she is more understanding of and thankful for Harry's expertise.

Glenna had sold forty acres to George just prior to his death, and Harry suspects this is connected to the murder. When a prominent businessman (Glenna's uncle) is killed, Harry is arrested for his murder.

Harry is attending a seaside jazz club when he hears a trumpeter playing in tune outside. Suddenly the trumpeter falls into the water - pushed in by a hit man unnoticed by anyone else. Harry, thinking the trumpeter passed out from being drunk, takes him to his beach house to sober up, and the next morning leaves to buy groceries. When Harry returns he finds a bottle of scotch broken and his car gone, stolen by the trumpeter. He also finds a young singer, Ruthie Daniels, waiting for him; Ruthie knows who the trumpeter is - her father, Arthur "Art Sully" Daniels. Daniels went to prison in 1963 for stabbing to death a mobster named Reisman and is now on parole; Daniels was gypped by his record company, led by Sid Hacktel, out of royalties, and is being pursued. Harry smokes out the hit man seeking Daniels and identifies him as Manny "Smitty" Schmicht, a former bouncer for one of Hacktel's nightclubs - and who is left-handed. When Sid Hacktel is found shot to death, Harry's car with Daniel's hat and trumpet are found abandoned in the driveway, but Harry recognizes it to be a setup since he had the hat and horn at his house that morning. Lt. Trench is stuck, since the only hard evidence he has is against Daniels even though he recognizes Daniels is being set up, since Hacktel's company is under FBI investigation for pirating recordings of jazz concerts and festivals, and an FBI agent involved in the investigation was found stabbed to death six weeks earlier. But both Harry and Trench encounter more than they bargained for when a family friend of the Daniels' is found stabbed to death and Ruthie Daniels is taken hostage by Smitty.

The police arrest the young man, who is an aspiring actor named Todd Conway, but release him for lack of evidence. Todd then hires Harry the next day after an attempt on his life. Orwell suspects Carl Milland has put a 'hit' on Todd, and strikes a deal with Milland to give him 24 hours to find the real killer of his daughter.

A young woman is murdered on a college campus, and the police suspect an eccentric young man named Lester Hodges as the killer. Harry is hired by Lester's father to prove his son's innocence. Lester is intensely interested in criminology and begins to idolize Orwell, even dressing like him and imitating his actions. When Harry discovers another girl was previously murdered with the same M.O., Orwell begins to wonder if Lester is innocent or not.

Lt. Manny Quinlan goes to Los Angeles to rescue his drug addicted niece. He finds her in a seedy rooming house; high on drugs and uncooperative. She shows her Uncle an envelope filled with money lying on the table; Manny puts it into his coat pocket. But it's a set up by her pusher. Manny is shot and left to die. He writes Harry Orwell's name on the envelope and drags himself down the stairs. His final act is getting that envelope in a mailbox. Manny is outside of his jurisdiction; he had an envelope full of money. It appears that he is a dirty, bribed cop. Harry Orwell knows that isn't true; he sets out to clear the name and reputation of his murdered friend Manny.
