Waking in hospital several days after his near-fatal shooting, Harrow is determined to piece together the puzzle of who wanted him dead - before the unknown villain tries again. Senior Sergeant Nichols promises that the police are on the case, while concerned friends and family urge Harrow to rest - but of course, Harrow cannot. Harrow dives straight back into work. With the help of an intelligent and attractive new colleague Grace, his first case finds them investigating the tragic puzzle of a young mother's psychotic episode, while also doggedly pursuing the truth behind his own brush with death. Nothing is as it seems, and Harrow begins to doubt his usually infallible wits. But when his daughter Fern comes under threat, Harrow needs to dig deep, relying on his famous forensic skills - and a little luck - to solve the mystery of who is out to get him - a mystery that will throw into jeopardy everything Harrow holds dear.

Charged with stealing fentanyl from her employer, chemist Tim, Fern's bail specifies she must stay with either parent and may not associate with lover Callan. Jill details Fern's guilt. Daniel tells Bryan about his phone call. Spanish popular social media personalities and base jumpers Luca Fandiño and Tomas Fuentes fall to their death from a skyscraper, hitting Ray's parked car. Luca's chute did not deploy unlike Tomas's. Luca's wife Anna filmed the jump for their website. Daniel and Grace's autopsy reveals Luca was infected with a tapeworm, which could affect his motor function. Daniel invites Callan, who frets over Fern, to stay on his boat.Luca was diagnosed with motor neuron disease, Anna knew but she refused to be trapped into caring for Luca for years and swapped his chute, so that he was unable to reach it. Tomas jumped after Luca trying to save him. Confronted on the skyscraper, Anna feigns attempting suicide to lure Daniel closer and foists him off. Grace saves Daniel, who tells Maxine he suspects Francis of threatening him, via family and friends. Bryan tells Daniel that Francis died in a prison fire.

Daniel gets a copy of Laurie's autopsy report on master serial killer Francis and tells Simon it undoes his theory. Daniel and Grace attend the mummified corpse of university student Libby, who was found bricked up in the basement of a suburban house, over twenty years ago reported missing by her friend and fellow university student, Melissa. Breaking bail conditions, Fern and Callan still see each other, according to Daniel's lawyer friend Paul most likely to be imprisoned for drug possession unless there is evidence for another culprit. Daniel, Grace and Simon discover that fellow university student James, , overdosed on extasy, had raped Melissa at a party at the house, owned by Ron. His friend Paul saved James's life by taking him to a hospital and back in the now-empty house Paul found Libby had choked on her own vomit, failed to revive her, so bricked the corpse in the basement, incurring asbestosis by exposure while bricking her in, now manifesting fatal symptoms. Daniel figured out why Grace left neurosurgery, dealing with dying patients and their relatives had traumatized her. Daniel learns his old mentor Laurie Badcoe had identified Francis from dental work. Daniel's beloved car -paternal heirloom- is arsoned by Francis, who is working at the same company as Callan, under a false name.

Daniel's rickety car explodes in front of him, ignored by the police. Simon and Daniel discuss Francis's MO: choosing male-female couples, immobilizing the male, raping the female and killing both. Daniel tells Simon to stop investigating 'very' dead Francis. Maxine assigns Daniel and Grace to North Queensland as Laurie is unavailable to autopsy a conservation officer, Ben, whose corpse was found on a beach with shark bites. Inside Ben they discover several poisonous jellyfish. Laurie confirms to Daniel that Francis is dead. Grace dates suave sergeant Gabriel Capello, who encourages her to pursue Daniel, even if it's her boss. Water analysis reveals Ben died in an aquarium tank. Grace and Daniel discover a poaching ring run by aquarium directors Robert Chaudhari and Ben's workmates, Janelle and Ash Klenyhans, who killed Ben when he found their scheme now attempt to kill Harrow, but Grace saves him. Fern searches whom framed her, focusing on Tim. Secretly investigating Francis, Simon finds Brendan's scary ex cell mate, Moran, who confirms that Francis was Brendan's next cell mate. Although warned not to, Simon follows a lead but is ambushed on a ferry back home by Francis.

Daniel and Lyle are puzzled why both are sent to Lyle's hometown, Euralla Creek in outback Queensland. It's to work with local Sergeant Colin, Lyle's brother, on a car crash that killed local baker Diane and Adelaide man Ethan. Assisting their autopsies is local surgery nurse Edwina. Diane's husband Bob was injured but recovered. Maxine tells Grace to seek help for work-related stress as former neurosurgeon. After overhearing Daniel had sex with Grace, uncle Lyle call Daniel a good man but ruins people's lives. Daniel learns that Lyle is a local hero, having rescued three children from a house fire but downplays his actions, since a fourth child died. Fern determines that Ross and Tim met gambling. Daniel finds a fingertip of a fourth person in the accident, goes to Bob's farm. There he finds Bob and Diane kept young Kyra in a container as a sex slave for years, till she got pregnant and escaped. Bob had recaptured Kyra before the collision, now tries to kill Daniel but Lyle overpowers him. Colin finds Kyra, Lyle and Daniel deliver her baby. Fern confronts Tim at home, he admits planting fentanyl, Francis immobilizes Tim and burns him alive.

Daniel is suspended for forging Maxine's signature on Francis' exhumation order. Customs blocks the export of an Egyptian sarcophagus find the occupant as a titanium hip-joint is detected inside: the mummy is replaced by eccentric mining magnate Howard Hobson, who sponsored the casket's return to Cairo. Grace's autopsy reveals signs of bondage, high dose of Viagra and a heart attack, yet neither killed him. Apprentice nurse Edwina joins QIFM as probationary assistant pathologist. Suspects include Howard's icy current wife Isabella and penniless previous wife Alice, both expect half Howard's estate. Daniel digs up Francis' coffin, illegally. The Egyptian translator Nenet is arrested, having seduced Howard to sex and deliberately overdosed with Viagra to kill him to embarrass the Egyptian government. Howard looked dead when Nenet wrapped him in bandages and placed him in the sarcophagus, he revived but slowly died of oxygen starvation. Daniel wakes up inside a coffin; Francis taunts Daniel via a one-way phone, transmitting images of Fern as he closes in on her. Bryan figures out that Daniel wanted to dig up Francis and finds the coffin. Francis kidnaps Callan.

Finally, the status of Francis Chester is determined, but not without a lot of convincing! Callan is seriously injured and ends up in the hospital. Meanwhile, there seems to be a possibility that someone who seems friendly might be working at cross purposes to Daniel.
