Eight months after her unhinged son Daniel tried to kill her DI Elaine Renko joins DI Charlie Hicks, replacing his late partner Alex Butler, as they investigate the suspicious death of computer hacker Lloyd Hammond,. She is aware of the married Charlie's affair with Alex's widow Mari. Together they link Lloyd to fellow hacker Sunny Ramachandran, who tells them that Lloyd discovered something incredible, before he too is killed. The detectives are pursued by an assassin they believe is hired by MI5 before a perusal of Sunny's phone shocks and divides them.

After making his terrifying discovery Charlie rings MI5 agent Grace Morrigan, who promptly has him kidnapped for the recovery of his hard drive but he is released when Elaine goes to the press with the dossier - not that she is believed by the public. Meanwhile Elaine and Charlie investigate the murders of Dominic Vaughan and Sabina Kesinovic, who ran a PR company with single parent Maggie Sweeting, a woman with a homicidal ex-husband Chris Chapel, from whom the detectives rescue her. At the same time Daniel receives a visitor to his psychiatric ward.

As Elaine interviews two criminals who allege that Charlie killed his partner Alex help line operator Jamie Unwin is murdered and disturbed former aid worker Thom Blackwood confesses to priest Dennis Chapman he was responsible to show that God does not exist as He did not intervene to save a good person. Seeing the priest at the murder scene Charlie follows him, saving him from Blackwood, who escapes and claims more victims. A disturbing visit to Daniel, unsettled by Grace Morrigan asking him about Hard Sun leads Elaine to suggest killing her. However Morrigan approaches Charlie threatening his family unless he persuades Elaine to give her the hard drive.

Will Benedetti, the journalist to whom Elaine gave the story of Hard Sun, the forthcoming destruction of Earth by the Sun, is spared by Blackwood but forced to send a chilling message to the police, claiming he is the spokesman for Hard Sun before committing more murders. Elaine is leaned on by her boss Bell to prove Charlie's guilt whilst the police use Father Chapman's address book to identify Blackwood as their suspect, setting a trap with the father as bait and trapping him. However Morrigan has not finished with the vulnerable Daniel.

Not the End of the World

Still believing Charlie did not kill Alex Elaine is called to a murder scene, the victim being teacher Noah Underhill. The killer is Daniel, escaped from hospital and convinced that Noah raped the 14 year old Elaine to father him . Believing Daniel to possess the hard drive Elaine races to find him before other officers and locates him. Charlie catches up with them but Daniel escapes, giving his mother the hard drive. Morrigan is still threatening Charlie but he is appalled by her attitude when the Renkos are finally cornered and acts to help them.

After Charlie makes a startling confession and gives his reasons Elaine decides to help him, incriminating Morrigan. Meanwhile the police are mystified by a number of disappearances of suicidal people, linked by the motif Hard Sun. DS George Mooney sets out to investigate but is caught and only rescued by the timely arrival of Elaine and Charlie. Now they must work together to prove Morrigan's duplicity and discover if indeed the Earth is doomed.
