As James I succeeds to the English throne Catholics are persecuted and forced to worship in secret. Whilst the king seeks not to antagonize Catholic Spain the zealous Lord Cecil and brutal William Wade are more fervent, executing Lady Dorothy Dibdale and the young priest she was hiding, to the horror of her niece Anne Vaux and cousin Robert Catesby. Robert and six friends are jailed for not attending church and on release gathers a gang of plotters to destroy the king and his government whilst Cecil releases convict William Turner to seek out the leading Jesuits Henry Garnet and William Stanley.

Episode 2

After an unsuccessful visit to Spain to beg the Constable of Castile to finance an invasion army Robert and his cousin Thomas Wintour travel to Flanders, home to the exiled Jesuits, where they recruit the taciturn Guy Fawkes and other young Catholics prepared to die for their faith. Their aim is to blow up the opening of Parliament though they are unaware that, to Cecil's fury, the king intends to repeal the anti-Catholic laws to maintain peace with Spain at the state opening. Following a tip-off from Turner Wade ambushes the plotters, capturing militant young priest John Gerard, leading to Robert leading a daring rescue attempt to free him from the Tower of London before he can give Wade any information.

Episode 3

Believing that they are carrying out God's will the conspirators unload the gunpowder in the vaults beneath parliament whilst the constable of Castile, frightened that their success will cause a national backlash against Catholics, tricks Father Gerard into naming them. Cecil is also intrigued by an anonymous letter to Lord Monteagle, advising him against attending parliament, which leads to a search of the vaults. As a result Guy Fawkes is arrested and tortured but refuses to betray the others. Despite the collapse of an anticipated rebellion and aware that their plot has failed Catesby and his friends refuse to flee the country and retribution on the part of the crown swiftly follows.
