Vicar Will Davenport worries at monthly dinner about his rich, lonely mother Amelia, but she actually has an aristocratic courting her. Detective inspector Geordie Keating asks the reverend along as 'interpreter' when a student corpse is found dumped in a Cambridge lake from a rare female college. The ferociously feminist dean is overprotective of he girls, who cover for each-other as members of a sorority rivaling the fraternities -one in particular- in knavery, but the victim and key witness Vronky who signed for her were just pledges, whose boys-oriented hazing may be relevant. A lower class student-waiter is caught sneaking into both colleges and hiding evidence.

Will duly warns his mother Amelia Davenport that aristocratic fiance St John Gurney-Clifford belittles her like his father did, but she sticks to the engagement and cancels his invitation, blaming 'father issues'. Returning home, Will witnesses a hit and run bu car on dodgy financial adviser Rick Astor. His latest Ponzi scheme victim is John Graham, shell-shock-affected brother of grumpy Harry, whom Geordie arrests on a confession Will guesses to be false. John's orchids also show a link to Rick's sanctimonious widow Jacqueline Astor, while his secretary fails to hide financial machinations. Will covers, even towel-only, for housemate Leonard Finch, who finally invited his boyfriend to stay the night in the absence of the bossy maid, who returns early.

Will fears his mother has broke all contact for good. While he attends the local cinema with reporter Ellie, panic breaks out as the attendant Betsey Granger discovers the fatally stabbed manager and projectionist Wyatt Rogers. Geordie quickly chases and arrests petty thief Matthew Butler, one of Vic Morgan's troublesome gym knaves. Prime suspect becomes Pakistani Tariq Hassan, as the medal found besides the corpse belonged to his late father and refuses to talk to the hated British hypocrites. He gets an alibi when Will's housekeeper identifies him as the man who threw a rock through the window at the time of the murder. Her husband Jack Chapman hastily decides against a formal complaint, but spotting they know each-other she treats him to lunch and learns about a (post-)colonial tragedy that shatters her marriage. The sleuths meanwhile discover Betsey became Larry's latest lover, discarding her doting super-shy, unpaid cinema colleague Edwin Hensler, under his scam to be a MCcarthyism-victim from Hollywood still promising a shot at film fame.

Will feels guilty for kissing reporter Ellie Harding and pulling back before engaging in extramarital sex, but she soon warns he must make up his mind. Will refrains Geordie from arresting a student who shouts about aliens running starkers trough town, believing it a student prank like in his college days, but fears that was a tragic miscalculation when that Chris Hartley's corpse is found frozen to death over night in a meadow. He was shy-natured, but participant in an LSD test program officially set up by professor Martin Adler, believing it a wonder drug in 'harmless' doses to overcome mental inhibitions, and he advises Will to seek canceling for his 'deluded' belief in God. Chris was actually studying under dean Douglas Munroe 's wife Judy, but somehow lured into a private experiment with larger doses provided by a chemistry student, all of them trying to cover up their folly, but Will sees more secrets.

Will, Geordie (who hopes in vain to spared from romantic nonsense), and even Leonard attend the fund-raising boxing match between ultimately victorious Lucas Rawlings and initially dominant, heavier Matthew Butler in Vic Morgan's gym for wayward knaves. Will speculates Matt may have been bribed to lose, but when he and Geordie find the entrance barred afterwards, they break down the door and find both boys seemingly attempting a double suicide. Lucas dies in hospital, and Matthew is hysterically unable to stand any physical contact with men. The sleuths soon realize both boys had been the victims of a grave betrayal. Meanwhile Leonard mediates between unforgiving vicarage housekeeper Mrs. Chapman and her "immoral liar" husband Jack.
