After a day out with Geordie's family Sidney is arrested, following allegations in 15 year old Abigail Redmond's diary that she had sex with him. Later Abigail is found dead at the studio of photographer Daniel Marlowe, who took revealing shots of her and who has now disappeared. Young mechanic Gary Bell is also named in Abigail's diary, which nobody can find, but Gary suggests that Abigail's father Harding had a less than proper relationship with her. Then Sidney discovers that Abigail had a secret, which unlocks the mystery of how she died.

After lecturer Valentine Lyall falls to his death fro a Cambridge university chapel roof Geordie calls in ex college alumnus Sidney to help on the case. Valentine and student colleague Kit Bartlett shared a penchant for climbing high buildings but a witness is sure that the victim was pushed. After Geordie has been threatened by a gun-toting woman college master Montgomery informs him that Lyall was a British spy in pursuit of a Russian agent, the Tsar. Sidney and Geordie need to identify them and thus find the killer, whilst Sidney is still dealing with the aftermath of the Redmond death and starts dating forthright police clerk Margaret Ward.

Now dating police clerk Margaret, whose informality annoys housekeeper Mrs. Maguire, Sidney hears a confession by blood-stained Theo Graham, who believes he has killed his landlord Eric Whittaker. However Eric is very much alive - until some days later when he is fatally struck by a hit and run driver, after which Theo goes on the run. Sidney and Geordie investigate the boarding house run by Eric and his seductive widow Vivian to discover other suspects and motives. Meanwhile, our gay curate gets the courage to step out with a gentleman friend. Sidney's old flame Amanda, whose husband had warned him to stay away from her, returns to the area unannounced with something important to share with Sidney.

Sidney visits Gary Bell, charged with Abigail Redmond's murder, in prison, to local disapproval. Meanwhile widowed stable owner Reggie Lawson asks Sidney to exorcise the spirit of his wife Anna, who killed herself but next day Reggie is also found hanged. Sidney doubts that it was actually suicide and believes that the poltergeist evidence was manufactured, with Anna's brother Laszlo, Reggie's new wife Kitty and adoring housekeeper Mrs Elton being suspects. Success in one matter and failure in the other leads Sidney to seek advice from Amanda, who has troubles of her own with her bullying husband Guy.

Geordie arrests jewel thief Eddie Jones, who claims that the policeman is having an affair with his wife and has framed him. When Jones dies in custody, Geordie, the last man to see him alive, is prime suspect and, whilst starting to doubt his friend's integrity, Sidney sets out to prove his innocence. Meanwhile Amanda helps Sidney in his attempt to get Gary Bell an appeal but their efforts would seem to be fruitless, along with Sidney's failure to keep the peace between Mrs Maguire and Leonard, both of whom are trying to deal with persistent admirers.

Devastated by recent events Sidney hits the bottle and neglects parish duties, leading the archdeacon to suggest that Leonard replaces him. He is shaken back into reality when Sam Milburn, who impregnated Abigail, returns and soon after evidence appears to suggest that he has been murdered. Sidney is horrified to learn about Sam's unhealthy interest in under-age girls when a prime suspect owns to the killing but Sidney is not convinced and discovers who is really out to exact revenge on the former vicar. The case solved Sidney is cheered by news from Amanda.
