It's the first day of a new term. Zammo collects girlfriend Jackie en-route to school, but she finds it "like holding hands with a plank". Cynical Suzanne is nearly 16, and is itching to leave. Jonah's moved away, but his cousin Jeremy Irving is now going to Grange Hill - he tells Zammo that Brookdale is merging with Rodney Bennet. Stewpot's Mr. Smart Hitler-like impression goes down well - until Mr. Smart turns up and overhears it. Annette's first encounter with Miss Gordon (Miss Mooney's replacement) isn't good. Jeremy finds the print room is an excellent place to make fake bus tickets

Episode 2
Randir starts a chain letter but Pogo hijacks the scheme for his own profit - except the mathematics of the scam seem too difficult. Claire gives out Biorhythm readings to her classmates of N5. She tries giving the staff readings, but spoilsport Mr. Smart won't give out his date of birth. Stewpot and Pogo spend the maths lesson trying to find the flaw in the chain letter idea. Male teachers are buzzing around Miss Gordon, but the girls are dismayed to see her in Mr. Smart's car...

Episode 3
Zammo waits for Jackie, but Jeremy convinces him that he's seen her in a car. She turns up shortly after to see him walk off in the distance. Zammo and Jeremy are intercepted by the Brookdale lads who had seen Zammo with Jackie (a Brookdale girl), and give him a warning to stay away from her. Jeremy uses his fake bus pass, and gets away with it. Annette bets she can wear eye makeup without being spotted - and then puts on sunglasses. Apart from becoming half-blind, she's successful... until she encounters Mrs. McClusky. Zammo becomes doubtful about Jeremy's sighting of Jackie, and his doubt is confirmed by one of the girls. Roland seems to be in the money, and starts lending it to others - with interest added. Zammo visits Jackie, who patently ignores him. Jeremy prints himself another bus pass - but to his dismay an inspector gets on the bus...

Jackie gives Zammo strict instructions to stay clear of Brookdale bully Gluxo. Janet follows Roly home, nagging him about his weight, and trying to find out what's up with him. Annette plans to enter a fashion competition, by sending in photographs of herself. Roly's money-lending racket is doing very well. Zammo's called to the head's office, but Mrs. McClusky is convinced he was involved with Jeremy's fake ticket. Zammo asks Nigel of "McClaren enterprises" about his being grassed up, and finds out it was Gluxo. Zammo collects together some mates, and heads off for a conflict with Brookdale. Annette goes to the photo booth, all dolled up and gets some snaps done. Zammo tries in vain to find Gluxo, but as time passes all his so-called friends dissipate, and when he does meet the thug, there's just him and Kevin left...

Episode 5
Pogo's chain letter scam starts to bite back when its customers don't see any rewards. One of these is Jimmy McClaren who gets Pogo to follow up all the people on his list. Pogo makes use of the computer to work out the chains. An epidemic of head lice sweeps the school. A UN associations course is announced, where each school acts like a country. Glenroy steps forward as a volunteer, and he persuades Suzanne to attend. Pogo's getting grief from his unhappy customers, but Miss Lexington and Mr. Howard save his bacon - until he gets out to the playground...

Episode 6
Jeremy is being particularly obnoxious when he returns from suspension. Annette's got a letter from the fashion competition, because she's made it through to the finals, but Miss Gordon tries to persuade her that modelling is a shallow life, and forbids her from taking the afternoon off to attend. In Biology, dissection of a rat is the order of the day, and some of the more squeamish members of class stay in the other room. Jeremy puts the dissected rat away into a cupboard afterwards, and then puts Diane's bag in there too. Diane screams, and is allowed to go home - but Annette uses this as an excuse to get out of school. She turns up for her modelling final - and finds a huge queue of girls waiting - and she's the only one in school uniform. She returns to the derision of her class, and in a sulk refuses to change for Swimming. At the pool, Jeremy seems determined to be as annoying as possible. Mr. Devereaux insists everyone stays out the water, but it falls on deaf ears; and the added distraction of Annette's behaviour keeps Miss Hartley away. Jeremy throws Fay's bangle in the water, and goes to retrieve it. The second time he does it, people assume he is showing off when he takes a long time at the bottom of the pool, but the boy does not resurface. The alarm is called: the swimming instructor dives in and tries to resuscitate Jeremy, but it's too late.

Episode 7
N3 struggles to come to terms with the shock Jeremy's death. Miss Gordon tries to reassure the class that it was his heart that gave out. Annette comes in late, and seems extraordinarily bright and breezy. Zammo's still at home, feigning sickness, trying to come to terms with his feelings, and is visited by Kevin. Mr. Baxter offers his resignation, but Mrs. McClusky refuses to accept it. The United Nations weekend is looming, but Suzanne is dismayed to find she must wear school uniform. There have been fights with Brookdales again, and more talk of merging the schools. Annette finally breaks down in tears when the reality of Jeremy's death sets in. Precious's hairdressing skills are put to the test on Christine, with disastrous results...

Episode 8
It's the weekend of the UN association's conference, and Grange Hill represent Tanzania. Claire is a little overawed by the other posh kids. It doesn't take long for Stewpot and Duane to find female company. Pogo and Stewpot both show an interest in Trudy who seems to have no preference either way. Glenroy gets involved with other black kids, and Suzanne finds herself left out. David Bellamy gives a speech on the World Food Problem, and then the other countries have their say. Afterwards, Glenroy tells Claire she should 'tell it like it is' rather than dressing up her speech with fancy words. Suzanne and Claire go off for lunch with the 'Russian' delegates.

Episode 9
The UN association weekend continues... Claire hasn't turned up for the afternoon session because she's out with Guy who's from a public school. In a discussion about trade, Glenroy gets carried away on his rant about poverty, and prematurely ends Grange Hill's chance to talk. Suzanne is furious with Glenroy, as he storms off, and tempers fray further when he comes across John Eastlake's ignorant discourse on civilized societies. Glenroy's about to pack his bags and go, but is persuaded to stay. At the dinner dance, Claire waits for Guy, and Stewpot waits for Trudy - and then they find that their respective partners are an item. Fed-up Claire dances with upper-class twit John Eastlake, then runs off to her bedroom. Stewpot goes to find her, and persuades her to come back to the dance. The following morning, a faked letter tells Eastlake to rendezvous with Claire by the lake. A loud splash later, and it's a very wet and bedraggled Eastlake who makes his way back to the car...

Episode 10
The girls have taken over the gym for gymnastic trials, and Fay excels. Sarah and Mandy, jealous of her prowess, suggest that Fay has a preference for girls, and Miss Gordon in particular, but Fay overhears and runs off, upset. Meanwhile the boys run round the school, in practice for the school walk, but skive off. Mr. Baxter finds them skulking around near the bins, and gives them "10 laps of honour", and a lecture about cheating. Roly's money-lending business has turned into a proper loan shark affair with menaces, run by Jimmy McClaren. McClaren proposes betting for the school walk, planning to nobble the certain winner. While running round the block, Zammo and Kevin read a newspaper headline that confirms that Grange Hill will merge with another school. While Roly's been getting bets for the dead-cert, McClaren and his cronies have failed to convince the athlete to forgo his victory. Miss Gordon tells Fay that she's been selected for the gymnastic team, and can't understand her lack of enthusiasm. Jackie has a heart-to-heart with grieving Zammo, then Gluxo appears on the scene with a message of war for McClaren...

Jackie's walking with Zammo, but only just avoids meeting Gluxo. McClaren steals a butcher's boy's bike - but the owner is in hot pursuit - and it's Gripper Stebson, no less! The bike seems to come with a black and white dog that follows McClaren incessantly. Claire has a talk with Fay about the rumour of her having a crush on Miss Gordon, and to put her at her ease talks about the time she used to write secret diaries. Pogo runs off during the middle of the walk when he spies his St. Mary's girlfriend, Lucinda. He takes her to a café, but she is more interested in eating cream cakes than talking to him. Roland doggedly finishes the course - he needs the money he's been sponsored to pay off all the bets. The school walk comes to an end, but Kilvert, the favourite, pulls a muscle, and is out of the running. Zammo and Jackie come across a depressed Roland, and then McClaren turns up, hotly pursued by an angry Gripper. Gripper points out damage to his bike, and the missing meat ("That's 'M' 'E' 'E' 'T' - Meet", he spells out), and demands compensation. Everyone goes their separate ways - including McClaren, who has a black and white dog on his trail...

Episode 12
Zammo still hasn't given Gluxo's note to McClaren, because Jackie's forbidden him to get involved in the gang warfare. When he does, he is told he must organize forces from his year. Suzanne feels she is growing out of school life - she has sympathetic words from Mr. McGuffy, but harsh words from Mr. Smart, and walks out of school. Nosey Janet goes round to see if Roland wants to come to the youth club. There's no answer when she knocks, so she brazenly walks in, and finds an untidy house. Roland's father tells her that Roland's mother has left them, and tells her to leave. Roland's money lending business now extends to taking property from non-payers. Down the youth club, Diane announces that she has a boyfriend, to the amazement of the other girls. McClaren's right hand man, Nigel, rounds up the Grange Hill boys from the Youth Club for the fight with Brookdale, and they head off to the warehouse. Suddenly, the front doors slam shut and a note from Gluxo is pushed underneath - it tells them that they are trespassing on private property, and a short time later there are police sirens outside.

Episode 13
Diane continues to talk about her boyfriend. Annette comes in breezily with a new Polaroid camera and shows off about how much money her mum gives her. Julie becomes so annoyed at her boasting, that she takes her camera. Janet nags Roland incessantly trying to find out more about his missing mother. Mrs. McClusky talks to her staff about the merger, assessing their reactions. Annette is so upset about her missing camera that Julie relents and gives it back, but Annette reacts violently. When Annette's getting changed, which she does only reluctantly, Julie notices she has bruises down her arms. The gym teacher also has noticed them, but Annette just claims she fell. Finally, the truth emerges as Annette explains that her mum hits her sometimes, when she is depressed.

Episode 14
Mr. McGuffy teaches Diane's class drama, starting with some warm-up exercises dancing to primitive music. So just what are Diane's weekend plans - is she going to see her boyfriend Mark, or perhaps stay at home with Gloria, her ultra-modern mother, in a world of her own? Miss Gordon's has a nude life model planned for the art class, but Mrs. McClusky might take some convincing. Diane has trouble maintaining the believability of Mark and fakes a photograph. She takes her mother's ring, and claims it is an engagement ring from Mark. Diane's mum finds letters apparently from Mark, and is convinced Diane's up to no good, and forbids her to see Mark any more. After school, Diane seems to have been stood-up by an imaginary Mark. When Diane goes home, she finds her mother has realized the truth. After a heart-to-heart, Diane hands back the borrowed ring. The following day, Diane is crying - her "boyfriend" has moved up North... Perhaps Diane could teach Mr. McGuffy a thing or two about drama?

Episode 15
Julie and Fay talk about how Annette's mother hits her and they decide to speak to Miss Gordon. Annette's new bike, the latest present from her changeable mother, provokes jealous interest by Jimmy McClaren's crew. McClaren gets Roly to borrow a saw from metalwork, and steal the bike. Roland then takes it to the local second-hand shop, and sells it for twenty quid. Annette is found crying near her lost bike, and Mr. Knowles calls the police. Meanwhile, Miss Gordon has gone round to Annette's mother to talk about Annette's physical abuse. Mrs. Firman breaks down and admits to hurting Annette, and agrees that Annette should spend some time away from home. The next day, Annette is angry with Fay, and they fight. Mr Knowles takes them to Mrs. McClusky, who calms the situation, and tells her the bike has been found. Roland's dad has been called to school, as it has been discovered that Roland took the bike, but Mrs. McClusky is hot on the trail of Roland's associates too...

Episode 16
N3 is away in the countryside on an orienteering course. Everyone pairs off, but Roland finds himself with Mr. Baxter, which at least seems preferable to being with Janet. Fay and Annette have a slender lead over Zammo and Kevin, which they are determined to maintain even if it means cutting across a wood, and misleading the enemy. Roland seems to be doing rather better at Orienteering than Mr. Baxter. Mandy and Sarah hide a control marker which causes Roland and Mr. Baxter to get hopelessly lost. Mr. Baxter tries to climb a steep slope, but slips back and is incapacitated. Back at camp, there's growing concern at the missing pair, and a search party commences. The teachers fail to find them and send everyone else back to the hostel, while a proper search and rescue is arranged. At the hostel, Sarah and Mandy admit they hid the control marker. As evening turns into night, things are looking grim - but then Roland's whistle is heard, and the two strays are found. A telephone call is placed to the hostel, and there is relief all round. Roly comes back to a rapturous welcome...

Time for examinations, but Pogo isn't worried, he's got a job in double-glazing lined up. Stewpot panics in the first exam, but Mrs. McClusky shakes some sense into him. The art club is fed up with drawing twigs and yearns for a life model. They manage to talk Mrs. McClusky round to their way of thinking, but just for the art club. Suzanne turns up in a Boy George outfit to meet her old classmates and talks to Mr. McGuffy about the difficulty of finding work. News of the nude model spreads to the likes of lecherous Pogo and Miss Gordon is surprised to find new recruits applying for the art club. Suzanne finds herself left out when she turns up to meet Claire and bursts into tears: real life outside school isn't all she hoped. She has an encouraging talk to Mr. McGuffy about college courses. Pogo's expectations are cruelly dashed when the nude model appears

Episode 18
It's the end of term and tempers are getting frayed setting up a disco, with Glenroy's enormous sound system that can only play Reggae. In celebration of the merger with Rodney Bennet, some members of that school are present. Pogo's nose is out of joint, as he wanted to try out his own DJ skills. Suzanne turns up and is put to use trying to convince Glenroy to share the sound system. Mr. Baxter confronts the Brookdale kids when the takings seem low - but where have they stashed the cash?
