Grange Hill Season 27 Episodes

20 Episodes 2004 - 2004

Episode 1

Episode #27.1

Just what is Togger's "weapon of mass destruction" he has in a brown paper bag? Maddie and Karen investigate the impressive new technology lab. Annie's back alone - Baz is in hospital for a check up - she explains to Tanya that she spent the Summer holiday at her aunt's house. Anika catches up with Calvin and Spencer - she explains that Amy won't be coming back. Josh asks Martin "how far he got" with Kathy - Martin, as usual, takes the question literally, and says they went on a day trip. Maddie, with perhaps a hint of jealousy, tries to wind up Kathy about her relationship with Martin. As Year 8 gets ready for registration, Togger reveals his secret item - a collection of chicken legs to annoy the girls with. Emma finds herself alone, with Tanya next to Annie this term. Annie seems to be paranoid that everyone is laughing behind her back because of the mental state of her father. There's a late arrival: Taylor Mitchell, a sulky boy who was (apparently) excluded in a previous year and now joins the other Year 10's. There's an announcement in assembly - the site of the school is 125 years old in 18 days time - a countdown starts on an electronic board, with the intention of celebrating the anniversary in some - yet to be determined - way. One of Togger's chicken legs in Emma's hair is only a momentary distraction as Mrs. Bassinger tells the gathering that this is a new year, a new beginning and brings the assembly to an end. Nick wastes no time in resuming his feud with Hudson, reminding him that Shannon was all over him in the previous term. Hudson retaliates by reminding Nick that he remembers events at the Sports Day, and knows there is a secret Nick is holding back and one he is determined to solve. In the history lesson, it's clear Taylor is going to be trouble - this annoys Karen, as she says it used to when he was at Grange Hill before, but Maddie finds him interesting. In the corridor, Taylor wolf-whistles after Mel as she passes. Nearby, Mrs. Knucke assumes the whistle was for herself, turning round to find Mr. Malachay in her line of sight! In class, with Emma at the front and Tanya and Annie at the back, Emma spreads gossip about Annie's dad. Tanya overhears, and cautions her former friend to shut up. Hudson calls Shannon on her mobile, worried about her continued absence from school. Calvin and Spencer are determined to earn some money... perhaps if they shot a funny video on Calvin's mobile phone, they could get it shown on TV? Their bright idea of pulling Anika's chair away as she sits down doesn't turn out to be so good, especially as Mrs. Knuckle confiscates the phone as a result. In the afternoon, Togger continues to antagonize Tanya with the chicken foot. She seems to take it stoically, but as Togger leaves she's left a sign on his back - an unflattering caricature of him, with "Rooster Boy" inked in. As everyone leaves, Baz speaks his mind to Maddie: she's been acting like a bodyguard, telling people off for talking about his bipolar father, while he would prefer to handle things himself. Maddie kisses Baz: from a distance, Karen, Kathy and Martin watch. "Nauseating," comments Karen. Martin reaches over to kiss Kathy - she pulls away out of reach. Taylor is shocked to see that Mel is with Nick - it seems they've met before elsewhere - "was wondering where you'd got to," says Taylor, walking away...

Episode #27.3

Togger holds in his hand what he calls "the path to the secret treasure". The paper with "short cut" on the top, falls onto Emma's pile of work as the boys collide with her, but she collects it up as part of her work. Andy says sorry as he rushes by, leading Tanya to speculate that she has a thing going with him. Togger explains (rather incoherently) how his Uncle Peter knows that there was a valuable time capsule buried at a certain location near the school a long time ago. His uncle realizes that he chose the wrong tree, but he's given Togger an indication of where the capsule is likely to really be, a telephone kiosk featuring in the location. He tells Andy and Abel that they'll do the search during cross country - and that he has a map of a secret short cut to save time on the run, not knowing that the map has fallen into the hands of an unsuspecting Emma. Taylor seems to attract female admirers easily, to both Taylor and Josh's annoyance. Mr. Green's sarcasm on Shannon's non-arrival rebounds when Hudson explains that she's grieving for her grandfather. Mr. Green introduces the idea of citizenship to Year 8, but they are more interested in the idea of a time capsule, while Togger tries to recreate the secret route from memory. Mr. Green notices his non-attentive state, and Togger doesn't help matters by calling the teacher "Mr. Bean". The debate on citizenship degrades into a complaint against the Big Brother aspect of the school's monitoring the location of students with the swipe cards. Togger notes that everyone knows Tanya's location anyway, because of her voice. Because of their evident interest in time capsules, Mr. Green puts Togger and Tanya in charge of a local history project. Karen shares a lunchtime detention with Taylor. She works while he puts his feet up. Taylor expresses the viewpoint that they don't teach anything worth learning. There's not a great deal of enthusiasm for the cross country run. Annie's worried because her father has apparently gone missing. Mooey is still annoyed with Jeremy for hitting back at him during the Sports Day so trips him up as everyone sets out. He's also out to bait Annie, asking if her father comes after her in the night with a big axe. Togger and the lads break off in the middle of the run, determined to find the mystery phone box as the first signpost on the route to the buried treasure. They can't find it, but just out of sight there is a telephone kiosk, and Annie is using it to call Baz, distressed at the talk about their father. The treasure finding being a no-hoper, the lads try to find the short-cut back to school, hindered by having lost the map. The boys use a shortcut through private gardens, though Andy has difficulty navigating the tall fences. Togger is still trying to find the secret tunnel, but they are chased off by an angry house owner. Togger's solution of saying they are doing a bob-a-job week results in the worse scenario of them doing some digging for the householder. Hudson goes back to Shannon's shop, still unhappy about her refusal of his moral support. His timing is bad, very bad - the cortège of funeral vehicles appearing on the road as he berates Shannon and she stands mute. Andy is getting upset with the unexpected gardening he is having to do, but then there is a breakthrough when a piece of fence falls away, and on the other side of the fence the lads discover an old metal tunnel. Ignoring the "danger, do not enter" signs, Togger and his mates hopefully follow the old pipe, while on the outside Jeremy's methodical pace overtakes a failing Mooey Humphries. Underground, after trotting around for some time, they emerge onto a familiar vantage point - exactly where they started! Jeremy gets back to school thinking he's won - but somehow Mooey has gotten ahead of him, and has already changed. In biology, Mr. Green takes the lesson in absence of the proper teacher. Taylor tells Mr. Green they are studying sex. Martin's cold clinical knowledge of the subject makes the others laugh, and embarrasses Josh. Afterwards, Martin can't get the point that sex isn't just about the facts of life. It's clear that Kathy wants more from their relationship than Martin can give. Hudson is once again back at the shop when Shannon returns from the funeral. He doesn't seem to get the point she is making - she doesn't need him. After school, Taylor talks to Mel. Mel says that Nick has told her everything - there was a fight at Nick's last school, and someone was hurt. Taylor tells her that's not the whole story - it was Taylor's friend who was hurt - attacked because of the colour of his skin. In the corridor, Emma is told off for using a mobile phone by Mr. Malachay - distracted she once again drops her school work - Mr. Malachay notices the short cut map, and picks it up. In the changing rooms, Mr. Malachay isn't pleased with the slowness of the Year Eight boys - especially since they had the cheek to use a short-cut! He tells them they will have to do the run again tomorrow...

Episode #27.6

Togger and his mates are determined to have fun with the caretakers unfixed door, seeing humorous potential in the units. New swipe cards are issued to students: Miss Dyson explains that they are used to show usage of rooms like libraries and gain reward points which can be exchanged for gifts and trips. Togger's gang paint the spare door to match the real doors, and catch younger pupils out with their fake rooms. Taylor taunts Nick that he is a racist until he raises a fist towards the younger boy - he is prevented by the appearance of Mrs. Bassinger. In the middle of the day, Baz and Annie go back to check on their father, and find him in a despondent, perhaps even suicidal mood. While he storms upstairs, Baz finds an empty bottle of his pills - he has no choice, he must call for help. Shannon learns more about Nick than she is comfortable with - that Nick provided the alibi for the friend of his who attacked a black youth. Her pursuance of Nick, irregardless of his dodgy past, is only too obvious to both Hudson and Mel. Josh advises Martin to apologise to Kathy and to buy her a gift. Martin's apology to Kathy doesn't sound genuine, and Kathy says she doesn't want to go out with him any more. At the Wainwrights house, help arrives, breaking down the door of the bathroom. Mr. Wainwright is led into the ambulance, sobbing. Annie's worst fears seem likely to come true when the social worker tells her that she and her brother can't stay alone in the house.

Tanya and Emma become irritated at Annie's continued secrecy. Calvin and Spencer boast of their success in making money with the door to Togger and his friends. Instead, Togger tries to have some fun with a bag of old-fashioned joke items, but it's not long before Mr. Malachay confiscates everything. Taylor's absence is assumed to be permanent - kicked out after Nick's confrontation with him. Anika has another go at Nick, but he refuses to answer any of her questions. Mr. Malachay can't resist trying out some of Togger's joke-shop items - the spring loaded eyes give Emma a scare. Togger is determined to get back Spencer and Calvin, so while they are performing a mime routine, he grabs their swipe cards - and the door. They take it to float in the swimming pool - using the swipe cards to make it look like the Sixth Formers were responsible. Togger can't resist putting a plastic dog poo into the pool as well. Anika asks Josh, who is Jewish, if he has encountered racism - he interprets her request as the awakening of an interest in him personally. Annie falls out with Tanya loudly accusing her of just worrying about make-up and fashion. Initially, Togger & his mob and Spencer & Calvin all get detentions from Mr. Malachay for the door incident, but Togger has an ace up his sleeve. He saw the teacher make Emma cry with his impromptu use of the joke eyes, but he'll keep quiet about it if the detentions are lifted. As the school day ends, Annie is ready to make friends again with Tanya, but Tanya hasn't forgotten Annie's earlier words, and accuses Annie of always wanting to be the centre of attention. By her side, Emma looks pleased as Annie storms off.
