20 Episodes 2001 - 2001
Episode 1
Mr. Hankin describes the Big Bang - but there's plenty of bangs elsewhere, as the builders are in, causing havoc. Before long, there's an electrical fire and everyone is evacuated. While everyone's out the way, Keiran uses the opportunity to look through the belongings left behind in the science lab, but then the smoke becomes overpowering. Outside, Lisa is worried that her Year 7 sister hasn't turned up. Late on the scene, coughing heavily through the pall of smoke is Keiron. When the school reopens, it's with temporary power cables everywhere. Year 7 is introduced to a tarantula - Martin Miller's knowledge is encyclopedic, but his responses seem very literal to sarcastic Maddie Gilks. Either way, Martin is the only one who offers to pick up the spider. Light fingered Keiron almost succeeds in removing an electronic toy from a satchel, but his actions are noticed. There's a late phone call at Lisa's house, but there's no-one there when Lisa rushes to pick it up. Spencer finds his dad sitting in the dark - he's about to be sentenced for his violent act and feels certain he will be jailed. Shannon gives the impression that she is a prefect when asked questions by Martin, and Keiron gets in her good books by giving her a prefect badge from St. Joe's. She's soon abusing her artificial power giving tasks to the Year 7's. Mr. Hankin makes an enemy of Danny Hartston when he finds his motorbike in a staff parking bay, almost driving into him. The chairman of the governors visits school and commends the staff for their effective handling of the fire. Kelly visits Evelyn in her new home, complete with baby. After school, Spencer's mother is waiting to see her son - Mr. Hargreaves has been given a sentence of two years. Lisa and her sister get home to find their parents arguing. Mr. Hankin shows one of the builders into the science lab - perhaps his arachnophobia can be cured by handling the tarantula. Mr. Hankin opens the container - the spider is not inside. While Mr. Hankin gives consideration to this alarming situation, the tarantula crawls away out of sight.

Episode 2
After spending the night finding the runaway tarantula, Mr. Hankins is asleep on his feet. Calvin and Darren are determined to capitalize on the spider fever, and have brought a large supply of rubber spiders to terrorize the girls, and the builders, with. Spencer explains to his classmates about why his father was sent to prison and word spreads around the school. Kelly makes an unscheduled visit to Evelyn, who's in a bit of a sorry mess. Mr. Hankin makes an (unnecessary) apology to Ozzie, thinking he'd overlooked him in the fire exodus, and offers to look after his beat box. Ozzie asks Shannon to retrieve it for him, using the builders' keys - she uses her self-imposed prefect status to get Kathy and Martin to fetch them - it's an easy task because the builder is fast asleep. Danny buys cigarettes from Ozzie, but disposes of them in the science lab. Mr. Hankin catches him in there, and assumes he's up to no good. Clare and Vicki butter up Mr. Jones to arrange a fitness club at lunchtimes. After Maddie's spider joke against Martin, Kathy sides with Martin. Max tries to ask Leah out, but fumbles it - afterwards Shannon lies that she knows Max was just messing around. Afterwards, Ben has a go too, but Martin fouls up his attempt by saying innocently, but in earshot, "Is she the one you fancy?" Colin's in the Arches, making his friends green with envy at his talk about life among ex Miss UK's, and Robbie Williams. It's the middle of the night, as Ozzy uses the keys he purloined to enter school. He unlocks the door to the Staff Room, enters, and closes the door behind him...

Episode 3
Spider frenzy is still sweeping the school. Ozzy is angry with Danny for selling him a dodgy remote control. Before History starts, when the lights go out (more building work), Mrs. Holmes seems to fall into a trance. Amy and Annika are determined to redesign a smarter school uniform. Spencer seems to have lost his former friendship with Calvin, because of his father's conviction. In English, when they are asked to write a letter to change someone's mind, his first thought is to try to change Calvin's mind. Danny takes Ozzie's cigarette while he's smoking it, and stubs it out. Mr. Hankin sees Danny with the cigarette, and jumps to the wrong conclusion and gives him a detention. Darren and Calvin's rubber spider upsets Shona, who drops all her school work, but Kathy spots them watching and demands they help pick up her books. Leah is beginning to realize that Shannon is scuppering her love life. Wayne and Arnie, with Nathan and Briony resurrect their long-stagnant musical career. Leah and Tom seem to be getting on well, laughing at how distracted Mrs. Holmes has become. At night, in the West family, world war three seems to have broken out between the stressed parents, while Lisa frets, but keeping her fears from Shona. After her visit to the prison, Spencer's mother puts on a brave face for her son, but later he finds her crying, and she confesses that it was a horrible experience. The next morning, Lisa's mother tries to reassure Lisa that it will be all right in the end. Spencer bunks off school to keep his mother company, but at school, sixth former Claire has learned about Spencer's dad's racist attack, and is determined to do something about it. Arnie and Wayne get some practice in, busking outside Ray's café, but Ray puts a stop to that, telling them that they have driven all his customers away. Josh Irvine is the only one from the younger set to join the fitness club with Claire and Vicki. Ozzie has an argument with the builder, Frankie Abbott, just as an electrician is talking to him on the walkie-talkie. As a result, the electrician cuts off the wrong supply, fusing the lights in part of the school, giving the builder a shock, and erasing Mr. Robson's work on the computer. Ozzie has a smile on his face, but it's soon wiped when the Frankie Abbott grabs him by the throat, and makes threats against his person. After getting soaked busking outside the supermarket, Wayne's had enough - he insists Arnie calls Colin, and a few strings are pulled to help promote their band. Mr. Hankin is telling Mr. Robson about the apparently chain-smoking Danny Hartson, when they find that all the school files are in a disarray - clearly, someone has been in there looking for something. After school, Mr. Robson is in a happy mood, playing a tape of Mozart's horn concerto - then he sees the large and realistic looking tarantula-like spider on the car seat. He attacks it with a tennis racquet - then realizes it is fake, and that he has an amused audience... Lisa and Shona return home to find their dad unexpectedly home, and their mother having packed her bags and gone...

Episode 4
Mr. Robson turns down Amy and Anika's new uniform proposals. Josh is again at lunchtime Fitness Club - but perhaps his interest lies in Vikki and Clare, rather than getting fit. Spencer reads out his English exercise - an imaginary letter to the victim of his father's assault. It's squarely aimed at Calvin, who has given him the cold shoulder ever since the truth emerged about the racist assault. Mrs Holmes once again seems distracted. Mr. Hankin demonstrates a smoker's lung: Ozzie whispers to Tom that if he thinks he's going to ruin his cigarette business, he's got another think coming, but Tom goes off the whole idea of smoking. Just who is the smart young man that Mrs. Holmes meets after school, observed by Miss Carver - a toy boy? Arnie and Wayne go to see Colin at a club - they are only let in because Colin happens to be near the entrance, and once inside they find Colin caught up with his new showbiz-type friends. In the darkness, Ozzie explores what the builders have left behind - he pockets the plumbing and electrical map. At their home, Lisa keeps up the annoyed tone with her father, blaming him for the split, but then he breaks down and tells her about Lisa's mother's new boyfriend - Dave Bently. Maddie tears Martin's drawing, just having fun, but his reaction is severe - he shouts at her, but she distracts his distress by mentioning that she thinks there might be spiders in the kitchens. Danny warns Ozzie to stop selling ciggies to the lower forms, and they square up to each other threateningly. As they leave the basement area, Martin, Shona and Maddie investigate its scary, dark interior - the cobwebs make Shona scream, but it is ideal spider hunting ground for an absorbed Martin. Clare finally catches up with Spencer and berates him for his father's actions. Both Nathan and Calvin support Spencer, relating recent stories about how Spencer helped Anika stand up to bullies. When the crowds disperse, it's Clare who's left on her own. Kelly gets some encouragement from Mr. Hankin to pursue a career in comedy performance. While she's there, Mr. Hankin reveals that his so-called smoker's lung was in fact a rugby ball bladder, burned with a blow torch. Ozzie messes up Tom's chances with Leah, making fun of her younger age with talk of going on the swings and watching Tweenies videos! After lunch, Kathy becomes concerned that Martin is absent, but Maddie and Shona don't mention the basement when Mr. Hankin announces that the basement is out of bounds because of demolition work. Shona can't keep the secret from Kathy, and then Martin's brother Ben hears of Martin's likely location too, and they run off to find him. Meanwhile, while Martin waits patiently for the reappearance of a spider in the basement, the builders, now without the building plans intend to make a start on demolishing parts of the old building. As Ben and the others arrive, and find an unperturbed Martin, bits of plaster from the ceiling sprinkle about them as the builders get started above. They run off, but above, the gormless builders drill into a water pipe. A flood of high pressure water erupts onto them.

Episode 5
Mr. Hankin continues to suspect Danny Hartson of peddling cigarettes to the younger years. Mrs. Holmes denies she knows any young men, when asked by Miss Carver. Josh seems convinced that the builders' danger signs are to warn against dangerous spiders, rather than Martin's pragmatic view that it is because of the flooding having weakened the plasterwork. Mr. Hankin sets the task of catching as many different species of spiders as possible - the boys think they will win easily, but Maddie reminds them that the basement will be full of them. Claire falls out with Briony over the support of a black refugee, implying that Briony lives in a cozy world. Shannon convinces Leah that she's seeing Danny Hartson - perhaps she even believes it himself. Meanwhile, Danny pops into Mr. Hankin's anti-smoking lecture, but then observes there to be too few people there, so rounds up various likely candidates, such as the male components of the ex-Double Dare Gang, and Kathy and Shona. Mr. Hankin gives a very graphic illustration of the perils of smoking, painting a dire picture of heart surgery, and a lifetime's worth of tar. Martin knows over a tray of cutlery in the canteen in his eagerness to get to a spider - it turns out to be plastic (one of Darren's), but when he shows it to Mrs. Holmes, she backs away arachnaphobically. Mr. Hankin's lectures don't seem to have much effect, and Danny once again buys back cigarettes from Ozzie's young customers. Vikki asks why he doesn't just inform on Ozzie, but he tells her that he doesn't grass. After countless failed attempts, Tom finally manages to ask Leah out. Josh feigns hurting his leg in order to get close to Vikki - later he gives her sweets, and limps on the wrong leg. After school, Mr. Hankin catches Danny with cigarettes again, once more taken from Ozzie, and they both get detention. There's a meeting to discuss what happens with the black refugee, but it turns into a shambles, with heavily racist barbs made by both sides, even Nathan getting grief because his girlfriend Briony is Asian. Afterwards, Nathan finds some white yobs blocking his path, eager for some aggro. One of them takes a swipe, and is surprised when Nathan thumps him back, then he and Briony run off. After a chase, the two are almost caught, but manage to escape by hiding in a skip. Mr. Hankin persuades Kelly to have a go at the comedy workshop, but she's nervous at first. Afterwards, Mr. Hankin finds a note on his windscreen - "Watch Your Back", it says...

Episode 6
Lisa's father mopes around the house now that his wife has left him. The local paper has headlined that the refugee girl will be deported. Ben is likely to be late waiting for his methodical brother Martin. Amy and Anika tell Miss Fraser that they want the new uniform ideas to become a competition. Martin throws a paper plane at Mr. Hankin, who takes it as a good demonstration of aerodynamics until he unfolds it and finds it says "Mr. Hankin once stole a bicycle - should he be teaching?" It then appears that Martin took it from the noticeboard - one of many flyers posted around the school. Arnie asks Claire out, but he blows it by criticising her earlier attack on Briony. Wayne has no luck either with Vikki. Shannon is doing quite well with Max and Ben until Leah asks if she is seeing Danny tonight. Kathy and Maddie find Shona crying because she misses her mum - Kathy comforts her, but Maddie doesn't have a sympathetic bone in her body. Mr. Hankin is on the warpath, accusing Danny of producing the libelous flyers. Tom Smith is out shopping with Tracey when they see Mrs. Holmes and her mystery man - word is soon all round the school, and Mrs. Holmes herself overhears the rumours. Wayne and Arnie hatch a plan - they ask out the opposite girls as a ruse to get them to go out. Tom (in a flowery shirt) starts his date with Leah at the bowling alley. They spot some sixth formers - Wayne, and Arnie with Claire and Vikki. Meanwhile Mr. Hankin is with Kelly at a comedy workshop. While Wayne, Arnie and their companions are getting on well, Tom's conversation with Leah dries up after the bowling session. During the pool, Arnie and Claire find themselves kissing, but Claire pulls away, and hurries off...

Episode 7
The arrival of Mrs. Holmes "young man" at the school gates causes her embarrassment. Ozzie seems to have found out something fresh to use in his campaign against Danny, something about his dad. Martin has difficulty understanding the idea of metaphors in English, but does see that the framework of the ramp the builders are constructing is faulty. Kelly is surprised that Claire made a quick exit from Arnie's company when she learned about his epilepsy. Who is the mystery person who emptied the glass case Mr. Hankin's 52 breeding spiders were in? When he, Mr. Robson and the builder investigate, they find the exit has been blocked. They finally leave hurriedly, and the story soon gets round that an amount of large spiders is on the loose. With Ozzie's help, Claire, Vicki, and their young admirer Josh gain unofficial admittance to the gym at lunchtime. Mr. Jones is furious when he finds them there unsupervised, but Josh butters him up admiring his fitness. Arnie catches up with Claire to find out why she's gone cold on him - he suspects her of colour prejudice, but she just says it is choice. The builder is getting fed up with Martin hanging around, but finally realizes that Martin was in the right and his design for the new ramp are wrong. Shannon elaborates her lie about Danny, implying that she's slept with him. Mr. Hankin is convinced that Danny was the one who tipped over the spiders, but Vikki gives an alibi that backs up Danny's denial - however, she's overlooked that Mr. Jones knows she was in the gym. There's a further development in the refugee girl story when the local paper announces she is missing. Martin gets an apology from the builders, under Mr. Robson's insistence. Afterwards in Miss Wright's lesson, and unable to grasp the concept of metaphor, Martin overreacts when Kathy's sharp compass point jabs him, shouting that he hates everyone. Lisa's dad gets a phone call that gives them renewed hope - Lisa's mum is coming back on Thursday. Looking somewhat like a mad scientist in his lab, Mr. Hankin uses chemicals to reveal faint traces of other writing on his "watch your back" threatening note, revealing the legend "Danny Hartson". Mrs. Holmes invites her colleagues to meet her mystery man at a pub after work. To their surprise she introduces Michael - he's her son...

Episode 8
Wayne's won a small lottery prize, but won't share it with Arnie because he didn't stump up a share of the stake money - Kelly makes him cough up. All the staff are behind Mrs. Holmes when the news about her son, previously given up for adoption, goes around the Staff Room. Tracey warns Tom that neither he nor Leah are ready to go further with their relationship. Wayne blows the fiver he won on the lottery on scratch cards - Arnie and Nathan worry that he's losing it, having reported seeing Colin around school (Colin was visiting Mr. Robson) Darren gets home, but hears someone moving around above. He goes to investigate and finds his parents putting something in the loft. Lisa, Shona and their dad are preparing a special meal for the return of their mum - when she arrives, it seems there has been a misunderstanding, and Mrs. West has just returned on a flying visit - a full-scale row erupts to Shona's distress. Shona runs out of the house, and a man from a car outside streaks off after her. She rushes out into the road, but the man following her grabs her in time. Claire and Vikki bump into Arnie at a club. While Arnie is with Claire, they are bothered by racist youths out for trouble. Nathan gets involved too, but Claire's quite able to look after herself, and the bully is brought to the ground with a judo move on his wrist. Kelly is doing her comedy stand up workshop with Mr. Hankin again, and gets to know Ros a bit more. She is a little disconcerted to find that Ros's friend is her lesbian partner too. Shona is returned to her mother, but her rescuer is Mrs. West's new boyfriend, Dave. Mrs. Holmes gets to know her real son in a pub. He explains he always felt different growing up, but there's a real, practical reason to find out about his real parents - for instance, do they have any medical conditions that he might have inherited? The next day, Maddie plants the idea in Shona's head that if she's feeling bad, she would feel better making someone else feel bad. She pretends to be bitten by a spider, lying on the floor screaming. The ruse works - Martin goes into a kind of trance muttering about the symptoms of a spider's bite until Mr. Hankin calms him. Mr. Hankin tells Miss Fraser about his trouble with Danny Hartson, and the conversation turns to his hospital appointment - he reveals he is having a checkup for cancer. There's something of "the boy who cried wolf" in English when Shona has red spots on her arms, and everyone assumes it's a continuation of the spider joke against Martin. Miss Carver makes her sit at the front, but she collapses en-route...

Episode 9
Darren's parents are over-keen for him to stay overnight at Spencer's house. Lisa brings breakfast to Shona, who's in bed with German Measles. The builders find an imprint in their new concrete with "D.H" stencilled beside it. Frankie decides to do some sleuthing, and uses plaster to take a cast of the shoe print. Colin's back in school after being fired from his TV show. No-one believes Shona has German Measles - it's obviously the spiders, according to Year Seven. In Science, the windows have been painted shut, and the Bunsen burner heat makes Dayna faint. Leah's getting closer to Tom, to Shannon's disgust. Miss Fraser arranges a "drinks thing" at her house for the weekend. Miss Fraser's looking after Darren's computer game because he's staying the night at Spencer's, and Mr. Robson finds her and Mrs. Holmes secretively playing it. When Darren goes hunting for it, he finds it in the hands of the Headmaster. Claire has a stern talk to Josh, telling him his crush on Vikki is a hopeless cause, but Josh tells Claire about Shannon's (imagined) affair with Sixth Former Danny Hartson. Fed up with the bitter atmosphere in her house, Lisa invites old friends around for the weekend. Martin has another temper tantrum in the canteen while discussing semantics. Claire finds Vikki down in the dumps - it looks like Danny's split with her - they agree to get together with Wayne and Arnie again. Mr. Hankin, with the builder and Mr. Robson confront Danny about the imprint in the concrete - but he points out he would hardly put his own initials next to the footprint. Mr. Hankin is about to proclaim Danny's shoe print matches, but it turns out to be just the builder's own imprint. When Darren goes home in the lunch hour to get a computer game, he surprises his parents, who act very nervously in his presence. Danny once more confronts Ozzie after school, but Ozzie retaliates by talking about Danny's dead father - Danny hits him...

Episode 10
It's Saturday and everyone has plans. Lisa and Tracy get ready for a party, while Mr. Hankin looks forward to meeting Mrs. Holmes's son. Ben has a frank talk with brother Martin. Kelly tries and fails to persuade Colin to accompany her to a party. Darren is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery of what's going on his loft, but his parents distract him with a game of scrabble. After that's over, Darren suggests Cluedo, which is in the attic - but his parents are insistent that they play something else. Miss Fraser holds a small party for the other members of staff, but there's a problem with the sound system. The male teachers of course can't resist tinkering to try to fix the fault. Lisa's party is a bit of a damp squib, with Leah and Tom locked in an embrace, and not much else happening. They watch a scary movie and are spooked when there is a sudden knocking at the back door. Out clubbing, Nathan, Arnie, Wayne and Vikki bump into Colin, but outside some old racist enemies are waiting in their van to distribute leaflets explaining their views. When Lisa and her guests recover from their shock, they find it's only Shannon outside, who's in tears, giving a sob story about being dumped by Danny because she's underage. Lisa hands her a brandy, and it suddenly seems a good idea for them all to have a drop. When Colin and his mates leave the club, they find the racists outside, ready for a fight, and it only takes a little provocation for Colin to strike the first blow. One of the yobs grabs a crowbar, but drops it when police sirens sound - everyone scrams. At Lisa's party, a further complication ensues when Ozzie arrives with some beer, and learns to his delight that Shannon is claiming to have been dumped by Danny. Kelly's at a lesbian party, and finds it difficult to talk to the other girls - but she does make a new friend and agrees to go to the cinema with her. Colin and the others reach safety - but there's the question of where Claire has got to. When she finally arrives, she explains with a grin that she's sabotaged the racist yob's van. At Lisa's party, Tom and Leah find themselves upstairs, and Tom leads Leah into Lisa's bedroom. Meanwhile in the kitchen, Ben and Max are determined to chat up Lisa and Tracy, but they find it hard work, and Lisa's getting quite merry on the brandy. Tom and Leah's intimacy is interrupted by Lisa's father, who turfs them out. Lisa confronts her father on the stairs, drink making her speak her mind, telling him she wishes she had somewhere else to go, and it was no wonder her mum ran off. At Miss Fraser's party, Mrs. Holmes's newly-returned son gets into the good books by fixing the hi-fi, and dances with the party's hostess... Darren wakes up - it's a foul night, with heavy rain, and lightening outside the window. He closes his eyes, but then immediately opens them when he hears footsteps from above. Meanwhile, Mr. Hankin, returning home from the party, realizes that his place has been entered in his absence, and calls the police. Darren creeps out of his bedroom and sees that there's a ladder against the attic door - a dark skinned girl climbs down, sees him and screams!

Episode 11
After his nighttime encounter, Darren learns the truth about Amelia, the refugee girl who is being kept hidden at his home - her life is in danger if anyone knows where she is staying. Lisa is woken up by Tracy feeling the worse for wear after drinking heavily at her party. After Tracy has helped Lisa restore the house to order, Lisa's mother arrives, but doesn't want to stay: she has merely brought some things for Shona. Mr. Robson isn't too pleased to find people handing out leaflets at the school gates advertising a band - "19 Down" - they are organising the school's talent competition. Mr. Hankin tells the police that he has no doubt who's been inside his flat - Danny Hartson. Darren fends off inquisitive friends' questions about what his parents were hiding. Tracy's amazed that Lisa wants a repeat performance of the party and Lisa falls out with her old friend as a result. Danny is interviewed by the police, but on the way he steps in some of the builder's paint - Mr. Hankin is convinced it came from contact with his back door. Danny won't reveal his activities, and the policewoman is called away before the interview can go any further. Colin feels a bit left out in the café, but Kelly talks to him, feeling worried about people thinking she is a lesbian for being at a gay party. Mrs. Holmes is a bit surprised when Miss Carver tells her about Michael seeming to get close to Miss Fraser. The police come to school again to interview Danny's classmates, but when Claire is asked in, she assumes it's to do with breaking into the racist's van. When Vikki is interviewed she puts forward the notion that Danny was most likely with his "girlfriend" Shannon - so Shannon is summoned to speak with the police. She pretends that Danny was with her, and even tells the police and Mr. Robson that he dumped her on Saturday. Any perceived crimes against Mr. Hankin pale into insignificance against the possibility of Danny's sexual relationship with an underage girl and Danny is once again interviewed by the police. Although he denies even knowing her, the police and the Head aren't convinced, and he's told the allegations him are severe, and furthermore he's excluded from school...

Episode 12
Mr. Robson learns that the true nature of the talent competition is really just a way of getting good publicity for the band "19 Down". Kathy's smitten by Nixon, one of the boys in the band, and Josh and Maddie realise they can use Martin's computer skills to wind her up - they send an email as though from her idol. With Danny excluded, Mr. Hankin breaths a sigh of relief, but with something of the wrong end of the stick, counsels Ozzie thinking he was bullied by Danny. Ozzie is perfectly happy to admit to having had his life ruined by Danny. There's a shock for Arnie and the other band members - their lock-up has been broken into and their equipment smashed, they figure it's because of what Claire did with the racists. Claire comes clean about why she won't go out with Arnie - she tells Vikki that she doesn't go out with white guys. As Vikki leaves her alone, unhappy about that revelation, she runs past Danny, but won't listen to his protestations of being set up. Lisa has another little party, and Ozzie and Shannon find themselves getting closer while Leah and Tom get another opportunity to be alone in the bedroom. Kelly learns that her new friend is gay after all. Leah and Tom get dressed in Lisa's bedroom - Leah looks shaken - as she leaves she insists Tom doesn't tell anyone what just happened. Finally, Darren gives up trying to keep the refugee girl, Amelia, a secret from his friends, and they are determined that she comes to tea with Amy. Claire becomes very unpopular, not only with the band members, but also with Vikki for her anti-white stance. Kathy is excited to get an email from her boy band hero, fooled by Maddie's faked email address, and replies to it. Maddie reads the mail and learns that Kathy thinks of her as a psycho, Martin as someone from Mars, and thinks of Josh as a wimp, and wastes no time in publicly reading out Kathy's reply. Billy has a surprise for Frankie, the builder, having commissioned Max on the tuba to play a happy birthday refrain - he is pleased that anyone remembered. There's a further surprise too - Miss Fraser emerges from the suspiciously large cake, dressed as a cheerleader and gives him a kiss. On the way out, she murmurs to Billy a reminder of their agreement - her kitchen to be retiled. Leah keeps avoiding Tom, Shannon assumes it is because he's dumped her. After school, Darren explains to Amelia that he's got a plan to get her into school - she's pleased at the prospect of getting out of her protective imprisonment. In the café, Leah is subdued - she confesses to Shannon she had sex with Tom, and now is sure he's telling his mates about his triumph. Leah starts crying, explaining that she didn't want to have sex, but didn't know how to stop him. Shannon puts another question - does she mean that Tom raped her?

Episode 13
Darren smuggles out refugee Amelia with borrowed school uniform items, but it proves difficult keeping her hidden. Danny's at the school gates, determined to clear his name. Vikki agrees to help - she pretends to side with Shannon, telling her that Danny will most likely be in court. After the email revelation, Maddie is determined to keep Kathy as "persona non-grata" in the eyes of Martin and Josh. Tom lets slip that he slept with Leah, but is confused as to why she's avoiding him now. Before long, his "success" with her is all round school. In the café, Arnie's band looks to be a hopeless case, but Colin's still sure he can persuade Tarquin to loan some equipment for them to play at the talent competition - Nathan wonders if they are going to play the spoons - Ray quietly removes the cutlery from their table. Leah tells further of her time with Tom, she explains that Tom was on her, breathing fast, and too heavy to push away. She asks Shannon how it was with her and Danny, and Shannon's about to confess the affair is imaginary but they are interrupted by Mr. Jones. Tracy is very sure of herself in the talent competition, so Lisa gets the others together to make their own entry. Mr. Hankin gets into trouble with Mr. Forbes over his planned talk about testicular cancer - afterwards he talks to Ozzie who seems sympathetic- Mr. Hankin is due to get his own test results tomorrow. Vikki persuades Shannon to talk to her in the Arches café under the pretence of talking about Leah, but Vikki switches the talk around to Danny - who's standing behind her. She explains she was jealous of Leah and wanted others to think she was seeing a Year 12 boy - he shouts at her that she's a stupid girl, and demands they immediately go to the police. Miss Fraser finds her windscreen is covered in flowers, and a greetings card has a ribbon tied to it leading her on a trail... to Michael. Lisa has a go at Shannon - and Tracy who sides with her - for what's being said about Tom. After school, Mrs. Holmes finds Michael waiting - but he's in fact waiting for Miss Fraser. Amelia and Darren are relaxing at home after a fun day smuggling her into lessons and staying out of the way of Mr. Forbes when the doorbell rings. A policewoman is standing there, asking questions about the Amelia - inside the living room, she and Darren wait apprehensively...

Episode 14
There's a smile on Mr. Hankin's face as he reads the letter telling him his cancer test is in the clear. Darren's household is on tenterhooks after the police called at the door, but for now Amelia is safely hidden. Mr. Hankin is determined to go ahead with his lecture about testicular cancer, despite disapproval from above. To Amy and Anika's annoyance, Max's practical uniform design wins the competition. Maddie explains to Shona what Kathy emailed about them all - including how Shona was always crying. Martin, however, continues to sit with Kathy, either not caring, or perhaps understanding, that Kathy has insulted him. Mr. Hankin's lecture starts, but it is undermined by Ozzy's coercion of the others to have a laugh at his expense - dropping marbles on the floor. Mr. Hankin is surprised when Danny Hartson turns up - and it seems for a moment that Mr. Forbes might enter the room. Tom is still confused with Leah's reaction to him, not understanding that she considers that he raped her. He finally gets a word with her - he assumes they are "in love" - she tells him flatly that they aren't - not any more. Lisa and Shona get a surprise visit from their mum, who gives them new clothes. Ozzy is in the science lab when Mr. Hankin unexpectedly enters, followed by Mr. Robson and Danny. Ozzy hides while the Headmaster explains that he wants Danny to have a talk with Mr. Hankin. In the end, both refuse to shake hands, and Ozzy is left on his own. At Lisa's house, Lisa asks her mother why there were no visits from her while Shona was ill. To Lisa's horror, her mother tells her it was because she is pregnant, and German Measles would have been dangerously contagious in her condition - and the baby is not her father's, but new boyfriend's Dave! Amelia accidentally reveals that she's met Spencer, and her illicit trip to school is exposed. Nathan is out walking with Briony when they come across the racist youths in their path. Things turn ugly, but then Briony's large brother appears on the scene. After a chat in the pub with Mr. Robson, Mr. Hankin heads home in a cheerful mood - but someone's been inside his place before him. He finds the electricity off, and the floor sprinkled with dozens of laughter-making toys activated as he treads on them...

Episode 15
Darren has a nightmare about an armed police squad forcefully entering the house to take Amelia. Josh does his morning exercises, but afterwards he looks at the pictures of musclebound men on the wall hopelessly. Shona can't understand why Lisa is suddenly being nice to her father again. Mr. Robson is not pleased to see how the new sponsorship deal has led to large advertising on the school PE strip. Mr. Hankin pounces on Danny Hartson and pulls him into a classroom - blaming him for the latest break-in - he almost seems about to hit the lad, but backs off. Everyone's gearing up for the talent contest, but why does Lisa find Matt in such a grumpy mood? Martin reacts oddly when a drill sounds nearby, covering his head with his hands. Wayne and Arnie are still keeping away from Tarquin, and put on the builder's clothes, but Mr. Robson catches them, and doesn't believe their explanation about dressing for the talent competition. Kathy uses the Internet to try to get to the root of Martin's different reactions. Lisa, Tom and Cracker look at Tracey practising her guitar with some envy, wishing that they had musical expertise. Danny happens to find Mr. Forbes alone with Talent Competion organiser Tarquin - handing over a wad of money. At Darren's house, he's alarmed to find police outside again when he comes home from school, and Amelia is quickly bundled away into the loft as the doorbell rings. They fear the worse, but the officer is merely advising on the bad state of the family car's tyres. The talent competition gets underway - Lisa sings a song with the boys dancing around her. Briony meets up with her brother, Steve, who makes it plain he doesn't like Nathan. After their performance, Lisa and the others are feeling pleased with themselves, but their self-congratulation is cut short when Shannon appears on the scene. She brings up the subject of Leah, and finally puts the unpalatable word "rape" in front of a shocked Tom. In the car park, while everyone is listening to Tracy's guitar work, Ozzy is busy with a can of spray paint, daubing "gotcha!" on Mr. Hankin's car. Kelly, a little reluctantly, goes for a drink with Lesbian Alex, who talks about how she realized she was gay. Lisa gives away her mother's secret to Shona, saying she'll never come back now. In the night, Amelia visits Darren's room, telling him it has become too dangerous to stay - but Darren grabs a torch - he's going with her!

Episode 16
Darren's parents wake up to find him missing and Amelia gone, and are faced with the dilemma of whether to call the police or not. Max stages a protest against the corruption of his PE strip design by the addition of logos, wearing a sandwich board saying "I am not an advert." The police are in school, once again, after the latest attack against Mr. Hankin's car, and their presence keeps Darren's parents at bay - they speak to Darren's friends. Josh overhears half of a conversation between Vikki and Kelly about Kelly's gay friend, and jumps to the conclusion that it's Vikki who is a lesbian. Two sides form, supporting either Tom or Leah, and the rift between Lisa and Tracy grows, with Lisa on Tom's side, and Tracy on Leah's. Eventually, Lisa tells her what she really thinks, and a fight erupts. Darren finally calls his father's mobile phone - he and Amelia are safe. The press come to interview and photograph Max in has campaign against the sponsorship logos, and Mr. Forbes can't get a word in edgeways. Kathy tries to get Ben to listen to her worries about Martin (Ben's brother), but Maddie puts her oar in, and Ben doesn't listen. There's another round of the talent contest - Kelly is a little alarmed when her friend Alex turns up to give moral support for her comedy entry. Tom has a talk with Leah, but to him she seems to just be speaking Shannon's words and he can't really understand that she hadn't wanted them to have sex in Lisa's bedroom. Ozzy keeps trying to get Shannon into giving him an alibi to cover the time he sprayed Mr. Hankin's car, but she's deaf to his requests, and later, bribes. In the talent contest heats, Kelly does a worthy stand-up performance, followed by Claire singing a slow jazz number. Mr. Hankin finds Matt in the corridor, deeply upset. Matt explains that his gran is in hospital, riddled with cancer and the talk about testicular cancer has made him worry for his own health - he's done the self-examination and found a lump.

Episode 17
Josh spreads his misinformation about Vikki being gay to Maddie and Shona on the understanding they won't tell anyone else. They don't - but some graffiti broadcasts the rumour instead - but Shona gets very inky fingers from the pens. Maddie is in a mischievous mood - she gets Shona to pocket Mr. Hankin's mouse where it makes a guest appearance in the History lesson - in Martin Miller's blazer pocket. Martin's predictable bad reaction delights Maddie, but Kathy once again steps in to reassure Martin. Afterwards, the ink on the mouse is quickly tallied against the ink on Shona's hands. Hankin is in a foul mood in Science - he feels betrayed by Mr. Robson's inability to act against Danny Hartson. Amy, Anika and Calvin are interviewed by Mr. Robson and the police, but feign (unconvincingly) innocence about Darren's situation - the authorities are still unaware that he was with refugee Amelia. After History, Kathy talks to Martin, showing him the information she's downloaded about Asberger's Syndrome, and suggesting that Martin might suffer from the condition. Anika and Amy ponder over Darren's disappearance - then they are surprised to see him appear at the doorway of the boiler room. Inside, they meet Amelia, and Amy agrees to stay the night, with the excuse to her parents that she'll be spending the night at Anika's, so Darren can go home. Max's anti-sponsorship protest continues with more rowdy demonstrations at the school gate. Shannon can't get Leah to talk to her, but does manage to pass on a phone number - a Rape Crisis helpline. Mrs. Holmes, aware of Shona's home life troubles burdens Lisa with trying to make Shona fall into line. Matt explains that a small tumour has been found, and he's having an operation. Darren returns home to his parents, refusing to reveal where Amelia is hidden, while Amy keeps her company in the boiler room. Their solitude is disturbed by the entry of Ozzie - they see him take his file on Mr. Hankin, and read it. Outside, Ozzie witnesses money change hands between talent scout Tarquin, and Mr. Forbes. Inside school, Mr. Hankin has had enough of Danny Hartson, and since Mr. Robson refuses to take action, he hands in his resignation...

Episode 18
Darren is cautioned by the police for wasting their time after he returns home, but they don't suspect any link to Amelia yet. Mrs. Holmes tries to get some information from Danny about the campaign against Mr. Hankin, but he's adamant that he won't grass. Max starts distributing posters about his anti-advertising cause, but Mr. Forbes spots them - rather than admonishing Max, Mr. Robson advises that he puts the posters in better places. Leah is at rape counselling. Martin's parents come to school and are told by Miss Carver that she thinks Martin has Asbergers - a form of Autism - Maddie and Shona listen at the door. Afterwards, the news spreads that Martin has "asparagus syndrome". In the gym, Vikki is concerned that Josh is pushing himself too far. She jokes that she won't give him mouth to mouth, to which he very publicly replies that she would if he were a girl - and why didn't she say that she was a lesbian? Then he really does collapse. Vikki finds graffiti suggesting she's in love with Kelly in the loos. While Leah gets counselled, Lisa hears Tom's side - he says Leah didn't say no, but she didn't say yes either. In the old boiler room, the builders almost run into Amelia, who ducks out of sight, with Darren following her in. As the builders leave, the slamming of the door damages part of the ceiling which cracks alarmingly. Vikki has a go at Kelly for spreading rumours about her being gay, but Kelly doesn't know what she's on about. Lisa makes her father realise the truth - his wife is never coming home - she also reveals her mother's pregnancy to him. Her words hit home and Mr. West takes Shona in hand, finding out about Maddie's bad influence. In Darren and Amelia's hiding place, they see Ozzie come in, followed by Danny who issues an ultimatum - enough is enough - he must turn himself in. Behind them, Mr. Hankin is following, but stops at the door, overhearing the discussion which paints a very different picture of the pair. Danny tells Ozzie about Mr. Hankin leaving school because of Ozzie's actions, but in reply Ozzie explains that Mr. Hankin left him to die in the fire earlier in the school year. Their argument develops into a brawl, and the damaged building is further stressed by their aggression. Mr. Hankin enters to break things up, and Ozzie immediately acts as the injured party - but the overheard conversation has ended the teacher's trust. Ozzie punches Danny, and moves to brush past, but part of the ceiling collapses. Darren and Amelia escape unhurt leaving Mr. Hankin Ozzie and Danny behind with rubble all around...

Episode 19
Their mutual differences are put aside as Ozzie helps Mr. Hankin free an unconscious Danny Hartson from the wreckage after the ceiling collapse in the old boiler room. Outside, Darren and Amelia are torn between wanting to help and not wanting to reveal Amelia's location. They decide to make an anonymous phone call but once out on the street, Amelia is bundled into a car and Darren pulled inside too. Claire's not pleased to see the racists she's bumped into a few times in Ray's café. Initially, Ray takes no action, but when they talk of a "chimp's tea party", it's a step too far for the café owner. Things look bad, but the numbers are balanced up by the arrival of Nathan, Wayne and Arnie. The thugs leave, but only with the threat that Ray is going to be sorry. Back at the wrecked boiler room, Mr. Hankin discovers his personal file and the true extant of Ozzie's interference becomes evident. In his defence, Ozzie is adamant that Mr. Hankin left him to die in the fire. In Martin's bedroom, Kathy is with him while he browses the Ofsted pages with Ben and Ben's friends present. Cross referencing the information leads them to realise Mr. Forbes is up to no good, with building work in all the schools Forbes has inspected, and pop group 19 down also performing at those same schools. Mr. Hankin is beginning to lose his cool - he takes a cigarette from Ozzie intent on resuming an old habit, but Ozzie swipes the cigarette from his mouth - he can hear gas escaping. With a new determination, Ozzie kicks down the door and escapes to get help. Things look bleak for Amelia and Darren when their car reaches its destination - a deserted car park. Amela gets out and there's a tall figure near by - her father! Alone with Danny, and concussed, Mr. Hankin wants to rest, but Danny talks him out of that idea. While Mr. Hankin reveals that he's just had a cancer scare, Danny confides that his father had lung cancer and took his own life rather than suffer any longer. To Danny's horror, Mr. Hankin can't stay awake any longer and collapses, knocking out the only light. Cancer is also the topic between Matt and his two male friends - they are shocked when he tells them that he's got to have tests at hospital. At Lisa's house, there's a meeting between both parents, and cuckolder Dave to discuss custody. Lisa's dad seems impressively calm, but in the kitchen he breaks down in tears at the prospect of losing the kids. Finally firemen arrive at the scene and rescue Mr. Hankin, and Danny on stretchers. The press are also there - Danny gives his opinion on "hero" Ozzie to the microphone "without Keiron, none of this would have happened," he remarks...

Amelia and her father sit in Darren's living room, thankful to hear that the brutal regime in her country has been overthrown. Tom has decided that he wants to put things right with Leah - even if it means going to the police: meanwhile Matt is in a hospital bed. While the protests audibly continue outside, Mr. Robson reads the evidence Kathy's found against Mr. Forbes and 19 Down's management which she surreptitiously handed over to him. Ozzie is back at school - a hero in most people's eyes - Mr. Robson catches him in his office just as he's about to root through the papers on his desk. In the Arches café, Ray and the Sixth Formers are pleased with themselves having shopped the racist thugs to the police, and found proof that they caused all the damage to their equipment. Mr. Hankin and Danny arrive at school, bandaged after their previous day's experiences, but Mr. Hankin finds to his dismay that the builders have disposed of any evidence - the school files Ozzie took - that were in the old boiler room. In the Head's office, things look bad for Ozzie, although there is no evidence - but the boy has one last ace up his sleeve. Ozzie tells Mr. Robson that he has hard evidence of Mr. Forbes taking bribes - a copy of the CCTV tape - in return for no criminal charges being brought. It seems Mr. Robson is ready to make a deal, but then Mr. Robson has a surprise of his own - WPC Gibbon is behind the other door, listening to Ozzie's admission of guilt. Ozzie is taken away on the charge of blackmail. Tracey finds Lisa in tears - everything's gone wrong for her - her parents divorced, Tom in trouble, Matt in hospital and her best friend hates her. Tracey puts her right on the last in the list - she's still there for her. In hospital, awaiting his operation for testicular cancer, Matt is surprised by a visit from Cracker. After Ozzie has been led away, there's the matter of Mr. Forbes and 19 Down's frontman Tarquin to attend to - the gig's off, and Mr. Forbes is escorted off the premises by yet more police. The talent competition gets underway, with Lisa and Tracey now performing together, while outside Tom has one final attempt to put things right with Leah. He asks for forgiveness - she says there's nothing to forgive - they were both stupid, but things will never be right. Kelly starts her comedy routine to a few hecklers alluding to her being gay. Her performance turns into a caustic lecture against prejudice. Ray's closing up the café when he is shocked by the appearance of masked youths at the doorway. Michael proposes to Miss Fraser, to the delight of Katy who is passing by at the time. The talent show finale begins - Nathan, Wayne, Claire and the others do their gig, a replacement for 19-Down. While the group sing, Ray's café is smashed up, and the gang step ominously towards him. The song comes to an end, to great applause - while in the Arches, Ray lies unmoving on the floor, among the glass and debris of his café.
