Episode 1

Episode #22.1

Judi's arrival is watched for a while by Alec surreptitiously. Afterwards, he returns to his community service, helping to clear out a canal. Spencer Hargreaves makes a bad impression on Mr. Robson just a few seconds into the new year. Calvin Braithwaite's arrival though, in a cool car with a young lady who's surely too young to be his mother, creates quite a stir. A new scheme is announced pairing the new Year 7's with Sixth Formers, to help them settle in. Amy is the only one not in uniform, and her clumsiness in getting to her seat seem set to make her stand out - Spencer calls her "Mrs. Bean". In the canteen queue, Spencer's cheeking of a dinner lady turns to horror when he turns suddenly and causes Mr. Robson's tray to tip up, messing up the Head's smart suit. Calvin seems full of tall tales about his life, but when the dinner lady approaches, he seems extra keen to avoid her. Fed up with working along the canal, Alec is determined to go back to school, and starts getting ready. His social worker though, alarmed that he's not meeting the terms of his sentence, tells him that he's in any case excluded from Grange Hill, and that he has an interview for a job lined up. Amy goes home to her flat, and tells her mum about the school uniform requirement. Her ever-practical mother immediately donates her own navy jumper as a start. The next day, realizing that Amy's family is poor, Mrs. Carver carefully suggests that Amy could attend a PTA sale to acquire cheaper second-hand uniform. Her new friend, Anika, offers to go along with Amy. New Sixth Former Kamah wastes no time in chatting up Judi, but Wayne rapidly steps in to extricate her. Amy's P.E. lesson is set to be unpleasant, with Spencer making jokes about her large skirt looking like a tent. Alec goes for an interview for a mundane job - he goes glassy eyed at the thought that his life might be mapped out. In the canteen, Nathan overhears a dinner lady talking about her son - and realizes she is talking about none other than Calvin! Nathan drops heavy hints to Calvin that he's sussed out who his mother really is, and Calvin becomes his lackey. Calvin explains privately to Nathan that the girl in the car was his sister. Amy goes home and breaks the news that she'll need money to buy the second-hand uniform. Wayne takes Judi out for a special meal. While they are waiting he produces a small jewellery box - she wonders for a moment if it is a ring, but it's a pair of earrings for her. He tells her that he loves her. At home, Alec's father gives him a bad time when he learns that his son turned down the job he went for. When his father bad-mouths Alec's mother, Alec hits him. Alec is thrown out onto the street with his belongings. "Independence, let's see how you like it," says his father...

Episode #22.2

Alec gets up after spending the night in a shop doorway. Calvin tries to tell Spencer that he suffers from Asthma, but he's a bit like the "boy who cried wolf" after all his tall tales. Alec's social worker, Cathy, is surprised to find Alec missing from home: his father says he ran off - meanwhile Alec has entered school grounds. To both Wayne, and Miss Carver's astonishment, they find Alec in the English class. Wayne objects that they were told he'd never be back, and Miss Carver escorts him out. Amy learns that she'll need about £20 to buy what she needs at the PTA sale - the amount seems enormous to her. Nathan finds his "brother" Calvin dodging games, under the excuse of his asthma, and escorts him, kindly, but firmly, to the changing rooms. Afterwards, Nathan disposes of Calvin's inhaler, believing it to be just a prop in Calvin's excuse. Out on the streets, Alec looks sadly at the few coins he has on his person, and hungrily at the window of a fast food shop. He sees an old woman fall in front of him, her purse falling too - and for a moment, the money looks tempting, but he helps her up without a word being exchanged. Then, his social worker appears around the corner - she buys him some food. While out running, Mr. Jones is disconcerted to find Calvin has an Asthma attack, and the run is halted so they can return to school. Nathan sees Calvin return in some distress, and knows he's misjudged the younger's boy story about Asthma. Calvin asks Mr. Jones to fetch Mrs Braithwaite from the canteen - it's his mother - while Darren tells Nathan to go find the inhaler that he's binned. He eventually finds it in the outside bins, but in the meanwhile, an ambulance takes Calvin to hospital. In the restaurant, Alec's social worker tells Alec that he needs to go to the meeting to discuss his future, and that there may be a chance for him to return to school if enough people can be convinced. At home, Amy counts her coins - nearly five pounds, but not enough for buying uniform. She asks her mother again, but she simply doesn't have anything to offer. Nathan guiltily visits Calvin in hospital - "Quits?" asks the boy from his bed and Nathan agrees with a smile. The next morning, Amy takes her aquarium and fish to the pet shop, anxious to make up the necessary money to buy her uniform - she sells the aquarium, but not the fish. The next day, she sports a smart uniform, and carries around her fish in a large jar. Alec and the social worker head into school for a meeting with the school governors. Alec says that he is sorry for what happened, sorry that he didn't stop Sean from hurting Judi. He explains that he wants to make amends, and to explain to Judi that he'll never let any harm come to her again. One of the governors questions him about his presence in school the previous day, and his disregard for school rules. Alec becomes upset at this, telling them that none of them are on his side, and he leaves abruptly. Outside, Alec tells Cathy that he knows he blew it. She replies that they'll know in a couple of days. "Yeah, right," he says, and walks off...

Episode #22.3

The occupants of Grange Hill seem set to become stir crazy when heavy rain makes it impossible to go outside. Max hears a brass band practising somewhere, and seeks it out. The music teacher is skeptical of Max's enthusiasm, because previously he's never lasted very long with any instrument - but perhaps there is one instrument he could tackle... A short while later, Zoe and Adam hear a noise like an elephant dying - it's Max trying out the tuba! Later, Max is determined to play the instrument - if only he could take it home to practise. Cathy, Alec's social worker, encounters him outside school, finding him in a badly depressed mood. She tells him the address of a hostel to stay at, but Alec has other ideas and heads into school, stealing a couple of sandwiches from some Year Sevens on the way in. He encounters Wayne on the way (who is his usual aggressive self), and then steps into the Headmaster's office. In art, Kelly and Evelyn muck around, and accidentally spill paint on Judi's skirt. She is sent to the store room to get some white spirit. Alec finds he's getting nowhere with Mr. Robson, and leaves: on the way he opens a drawer of confiscated items, and grabs some cigarettes and a lighter, also all the biscuits from a plate. Then, he sees Judi on her way to get keys for the storeroom. Alec follows Judi into the storeroom, which is filled with various bottles of chemicals. She jumps when she hears him enter, dropping the container of white spirit onto the floor, which spills its contents. Alec closes the door behind him - "Hello Judi," he says. He questions her about his exclusion - was it her who demanded that he be kept away from school? She tells him that although he sometimes scares her, he's usually okay. She offers to tell Mr. Robson that she would support him returning to school. Meanwhile, Wayne is impatient for Judi's return, and ignoring Mr. Brisley, marches on upstairs to find her. When Alec hears Wayne outside, his mood changes, and he pulls Judi to one side, his hand over her mouth. Wayne talks to Mr. Jones, who tells him to get back to class, and to lock up the store room. Wayne turns the key, and Alec and Judi are locked in. Alec lights a cigarette, and Judi discovers that she can't leave. When Wayne returns the key, he becomes increasingly convinced that Alec is around somewhere with Judi. In the store room, Alec lights another cigarette, and foolishly drops the spent match on the floor - a cloth now soaked with white spirits immediately bursts into flames. Judi screams, and bangs on the door while Alec tries to extinguish the flames with his jacket, but it's no good, and the fire spreads in the confined space. Unable to breath, Alec opens the window, and the two look out to the playground far below. The fire rages on like a furnace behind them, and smoke reaches the detector outside, starting off the fire alarm. Athletic Alec tells Judi they must jump across to the stairs, and he leaps across to safety. Judi can't manage it: she hangs desperately onto the window's edge. From below, crowds gather to watch in horror. Wayne shouts out "Judi!", and she loses her footing, screams and falls. She lands on her back, her head hits the concrete, and Wayne shouts an anguished "No". Judi's eyes stare up, as Wayne kneels down beside her and he knows there's nothing anyone can do. He looks silently up at Alec who's shaking his head in disbelief at the events, and a fire engine drives through the school gates...

Episode #22.4

Mr. Robson reads a eulogy for Judi in Assembly; he says Judi would not want them to look for blame. Wayne's eyes say a different story as he stares fixedly ahead. At the funeral, Alec stands some distance from the ceremony, as Judi's coffin is lowered into the ground. Wayne sees him - and launches an attack on his foe - restrained by Mr. Robson. As the Head drives Alec to get something to eat, having learned that he's been sleeping on the streets, Wayne has a go at Judi's mother, telling her that she'd never liked him. When Mr. Robson meets up with Wayne, he's left with no doubt that Wayne blames Alec completely for Judi's death. Ray takes pity on Alec when he's found outside the café. He gives him some part time work, and a place to sleep. Max's progress on the tuba isn't as far advanced as the music teacher would like, considering the forthcoming performance at the parents' evening. Max is told he must practice every spare moment, but carrying around the huge instrument is problematic. Finally, Max's efforts pay off, and on Friday he's told he can play on parents' evening, and furthermore, can take the tuba home to practise. Wayne's in the café, when to his horror he discovers Alec working there. He simply can't believe it, and punches Alec, while Ray desperately tries to stop him. Wayne leaves, and Ray patches up Alec, who offers to leave the café. The new week starts, and Max misses the bus to school so he takes a shortcut, along the canal bank. Two kids St. Joe's decide to have some fun with him, and grab his tuba case. Before he knows it, the valuable instrument is in the weir of the canal, and is carried quickly along. Wayne decides that Ray's café must be boycotted. Max finds his tuba case in the canal, but it's out of reach. His efforts to reach it only result in him falling headlong into the water, the tuba moving further away. Max arrives at school, soaking wet, and makes an excuse to his music teacher about the missing tuba. Sally, the bereavement counselor, tries to get Wayne to talk about his loss, but he doesn't want to know. At lunchtime, Max is missing from the rehearsal - he's at the canal again. He asks a fisherman if the tuba's been seen, but only gets a humorous response about Handel's Water Music. Back at school, he tries to explain to Mr. Chapman what happened, but his nerve fails. Then, to his delight, he meets the fisherman again, who has found the tuba, and brought it in. Max plays at the concert, and is pleased to see his Dad arrive half way through. Outside Ray's café, Wayne pickets the entrance, telling Grange Hill kids to stay away. The concert ends, and the audience applauds thunderously. Max smiles and takes a bow...

Episode #22.5

"Get rid of the scum who killed Judi Jeffries", reads the poster Ray finds in his café. Ray tells Wayne, who is picketing outside, to leave or he'll call the police. Gemma's in a funny mood, perhaps related to the news that her mother is coming to visit. There's a few new arrivals, and late returning people - Arnie and Mrs. Holmes are back, and there's a new stunning Sixth Form girl, Becky, studying fashion, who immediately grabs the attention of Arnie, Nathan, Colin and Kamal. A wager is set - a fiver for the one who gets to snog her first. Gemma is surprisingly outspoken when presented by Mrs. Holmes with a History test, objecting to the lack of warning. Her friends show no sympathy: she tells Cracker that he's like Henry the Eighth - he has a disregard for women, and he's always stuffing his face. Mr. Robson tells Wayne that must stop harassing people about Alec, and he must go and see the bereavement counsellor. Gemma explains a little of her home life to Matt: how her mother lives with a boyfriend and his children and how when she sees her mother it reawakens the hope of them reuniting. Talking about it makes Gemma upset and she runs off, bumping into Mrs. Holmes. When Gemma talks a little about her home life, the teacher suggests she puts on a brave face for her mother, perhaps cook a meal. At lunch, the boys all have an attempt to sit with Becky and Dill, but no-one's completely successful. Wayne has counselling session, but he hears Ray talking to Mr. Robson outside, and storms off, angry that Ray continues to support Alec. When Ray returns to his café later, he finds Wayne writing "murderer" on the window in red paint. Ray's beaten - "enough's enough," he says, not meaning Alec, who misinterprets the message and walks away. In the evening, Gemma takes on board Mrs. Holmes's advice and makes dinner in preparation for her mother's arrival. Between courses, Gemma's mother tells her that she's come over because she and Gemma's father are getting a divorce. It transpires though that the end of the marriage isn't the only problem - Gemma's father is going to have to work abroad for long stretches, so Gemma will likely have to stay with her mother. In the middle of the night, Gemma picks up her bag and leaves the house.

Episode #22.6

It's the middle of the night when Gemma Lyons rings Matt's doorbell. She tells Matt, and his mother all about her difficulties and spends the night there. The next day, her dad comes to school and suggests the only alternative to her staying with her mother is boarding school. Alec sits in Ray's café: it is the day of the coroner's inquest into Judi's death and Ray offers to accompany Alec. When Gemma's friends learn of her impending move to boarding school, they are determined to put up a fight. They protest with placards in the playground in support of Gemma staying. Becky's admirers make their move on what is mutually agreed to be the last day of their chance to win her over. They all, in their own sweet way, ask Becky out on Saturday - and she agrees to them all! At the courtroom, it's all over, and accidental death decided. Alec, Wayne and Ray stand in the reception area, Alec tells Wayne he wishes it was himself who fell - "it's all my fault", he says as he leaves. His sincerity is so clear, that Wayne adjusts his view of events. Becky meets Kamal, the first of her suitors at the bowling alley, and as they enter, she neatly removes his arm from her shoulder. She demolishes him at the game, scoring strike after strike. Then, she agrees for a "momento" photo in the instant photo booth. Kamal cheekily kisses Becky, before she can react, and the moment is caught photographically. After that, it's a repeat performance with Arnie, with less popcorn, followed by Colin, with no popcorn. For shy Colin, who lacks the macho confidence of Arnie and Kamal, she pretends to be bad at the game. Afterwards, the photos are presented to Nathan to judge - Kamal overstates his kiss of Becky, making up a lie about kissing her on the way home, and wins the bet. When they've left the room, Dill and Becky come out, having heard everything and Becky is determined to pay Kamal back. After the inquest, Wayne is in thoughtful mood, and wants to speak to Alec, but he's already left the café. He's left a note - tell Wayne Judi always loved him. Kamal goes round to Becky's house: Dill stays out of sight when Becky answers the door, and shows him into her mother's sewing workroom, where there's a nearly-finished red dress on a mannequin. Becky asks Kamal if he would help her complete the dress - could he model it while she makes adjustments? He laughs at the idea, but she convinces him, saying there's no-one else there in the house. Finally he agrees, if she'll wear the dress when they go out later. He cuts a fine figure as he models the dress, even enjoying the moment, and Becky asks if he might also wear the high heels to complete the effect: but this is one step too far. She gets him to go outside "into the natural light", and he complies. Meanwhile, while Becky secretly grabs a camera, Dill lets the other guys into the house. Getting into the role, Kamal dances on the patio, singing "Hey, Big Spender", and the others creep round the side of the house. "Smile!" says Becky, taking the photo, and demands he say what really happened in the photo booth, or he won't get his clothes back. Kamal sees the funny side, and joins in with the laughter...

Episode #22.7

Gemma is set to stay with her mother and step father - at least she negotiates a tenner out of her father, before he sets of on his trip abroad. The phone rings, and he leaves the plane tickets on the table - Gemma eyes them thoughtfully. Mr. Jones introduces a new player to Year 8 - Ben Miller, introducing him as a boy with a good reputation on the soccer pitch. Kamal finds a photo of him in Becky's dress stuck to the lockers, and gets the expected dose of derisory comments - but he takes it in good spirits - "I think I look rather good," he says. Franco takes a bit of a dislike to Ben, who outshines him on the football pitch. His anti-Ben feeling isn't helped when the sports master relegates him to substitute, putting Ben in his place. Gemma's father is horrified to find his passport absent when he arrives at the airport check-in. He goes to school, furious because the missed trip is damaging to his career. Ben diplomatically tries to get Mr. Jones to change his mind about Franco, but the sports master is adamant about his decision. When Franco arrives home at his parents restaurant, he can't quite bring himself to tell his father that he's off the team: his father is looking forward to seeing his son play in Inter-Schools semi final. Gemma's little trick pushes her father into setting the wheels in motion immediately for her move to boarding school - she is to leave for "Radwood Hall" at the end of the week. Friday comes round, and in Assembly, Mr. Robson announces that it's Gemma's last day, and he's sure everyone will miss her. The Double Dare Gang stand up and chant in unison "There's Only One Gemma Lyons" As school comes to an end, Franco comes limping out when he sees his dad, his ruse to not lose face by pretending to be unfit for play. Unfortunately, his father still insists on them supporting Grange Hill and watching the match. In the café, Gemma's friends give her presents: a torch pen so she can read after lights-out: she paints them a gloomy picture of the school. Cracker gives her what he's been told are skeleton keys, which can open any door, in case she gets locked in the cellar. Matt gives her owl and bat stickers, so she can indicate in her letters whether things are okay or not - an owl means okay, a bat means trouble. The match is over: Grange Hill win by 2:1, largely thanks to new boy Ben, and Mr. Jones is pleased that Franco had the enthusiasm to watch - he offers his substitute position back for the final, while thankfully Franco's father is out of earshot. Franco agrees, determined that somehow, he'll get back into the team.

Episode #22.8

It's Saturday, and the day of the Inter-School Football Final, but the Double Dare Gang have other concerns. They've received a postcard from Gemma with a bat in the corner, implying she's in need of rescuing from her boarding school. Franco's got the problem that his family still think he's in the team for the final, although he's only a substitute. He's got a sneaky plan though, intending to get Max to lock Ben in the changing rooms. The Double Dare gang get off the bus - there's no sign of Gemma's school. A local on a bike warns them away, telling them that there are things going on up there that he cannot speak about. Finally they arrive at the impressive grounds of "Radwood Hall, Private School", as the sign proclaims. They are spotted as they arrive, and run for it, scattering in different directions towards the main building. At school, Franco's plan is executed, locking Ben inside as the match is about to start. When Mr. Jones searches for Ben he encounters Max who lies that Ben has bottled out of the match. It looks like Franco's plan has worked, but as he goes to kick off, his guilty conscious makes him run back towards the changing rooms to let Ben out. At Radwood Hall, Gemma's rescuers gain entrance to the main building, but hide when they hear a member of staff approach. Unfortunately, Matt is spotted, and his excuse that he is thinking about changing schools doesn't hold water, especially considering it is a girls' school. While Matt is escorted off the premises, the other three ascend the ornate staircase. Finally they find her dormitory, and her roommates point out Gemma's location in a classroom. Seeing her friends outside, Gemma excuses herself out of her class and out in the school ground the gang are reunited with Matt. After they've run out of the gate, a car pulls up outside with Gemma's father inside. He's most surprised when none of the staff seem to be able to locate his daughter. Meanwhile Gemma is having a bit of a picnic with her old friends, and it seems perhaps the place isn't as bad as all that. Even the local on the bike is explained away as an ex-employee who was sacked for being drunk on duty. Back at the footy match, things are going fairly well for Grange Hill with Ben back on the team, although the score is a tie. Then comes Franco's chance, when one of his team goes down with an injury. At the girls' school Gemma has a final chance to go back with her friends, but she tells them the school is her home now. She hugs Matt, and the others join in the embrace. She thanks them for the rescue attempt. Then the grounds keeper turns up and the Double Dare Gang instantly scatter away - Gemma returning inside. She encounters her father, much to her surprise, who picks her up and swings her round, relieved that she's come to no harm. He tells her that if she's unhappy she needn't stay - but she tells him that she's started to make friends, and does like it at her new school. Back at the match, Grange Hill score a header and moments later the final whistle blows. When the players line up, Mr. Jones tries to find out what went on between Ben and Franco, but Ben's not saying anything. Franco shakes Ben's hand, grateful for his silence. Mr. Robson has a surprise guest to present the cup to the winning team, an Arsenal player: Luis Boa Morte. At home, Franco's father tells his son how pleased he was with his modest and unselfish play. At their dormitory, in torchlight, Gemma tells her new friends about the Double Dare Gang, and how Cracker dressed up once as Mrs. Holmes. To her friends it sounds amazing, but then Gemma considers the large school. "Think of all the amazing dares you can pull off in a place like this," she says with a grin.

Episode #22.9

On the way to school, Ben gets grief from the St. Joseph boys who were on the opposing side in the Inter-School final and they nick his boots. Spencer continues to taunt Amy, saying she smells. Miss Carver hears his jeering tones, and gets him to hand out the books, looking at Amy with concern. This worry increases when Amy's reading skills appear to be poor. After the lesson she asks Amy if she might be interested in some special tuition to help her catch up. Kamal has the answer to his friends' problem in getting girls - a "babe magnet" of a car for them to use. Mr. Jones puts the Inter-School cup in the trophy case, and Mr. Robson congratulates the sports master. Franco, on Ben's behalf, mentions that St Joe's were mad about losing, claiming the match was unfair. At lunch, Spencer and his motley supporters offer Amy a faux peace offering - an extra bowl of baked beans, and fall about laughing at their own wit. When Anika finds Darren alone, she grabs him by his collar and tells him to lay off ridiculing Amy. Kamal unveils the car - his brother's in fact: it's in need of some repairs though. On the way home, Ben encounters the St. Joe's kids again - they'll give back his boots if another match is arranged. The dispute ends in a fight, although Ben is heavily outnumbered. Anika goes round to Amy's flat to return a book that Amy left at school. Her mother is surprised at first, then welcoming, sharing their chips with her. At bedtime, Amy is determined to improve her reading, and picks up a book. Kamal talks his brother round to the idea of doing up his old motor - Saheed is only too happy to have the car brought back from the dead, but to Kamal's horror tells him it's likely to need about £1000 of new parts. It seems a lot, but then between the four of them, raising £250 each doesn't seem too bad. The next morning, Ben turns up with a bruised face, courtesy of the St. Joe's boys. Disguised as though from Grange Hill, the St. Joe's boys enter school, intent on retrieving the Inter-Schools Cup. They find the locked glass case... A moment later, Miss Carver's class hear the smash of breaking glass. They investigate, finding the smashed trophy case and the recently acquired silver cup missing. Franco looks at Ben questioningly, and Ben nods silently in reply...

Episode #22.10

When Darren asks why Spencer picks on Amy, his response is to grab his drinks can, and shake it up, toss it around to the others and then open it up in his face. Anika gets a small revenge on Spencer by flicking an ink pellet at his white shirt, but after the lesson he assumes it was Amy, and threatens to spread the word about her special reading classes. When it comes time for them, Amy's absent, crying in the loos. Anika finds her later alone in a classroom, and cheers her up by making fun of Spencer, and encourages her to go to her reading classes. Kamal makes plans with the others to work to get the necessary £1000 for the car, all working extra hard at their respective part-time jobs to earn more cash. Nathan does extra Djing and works at Ray's café, Colin does more shifts at the petrol station, taking along Arnie to help. When Arnie spots his father's car, he quickly hides under the bucket, knowing his father doesn't approve of him working outside of school. The four get together, and find they have £390. Kamal approaches his dad to get some financial help, and finds him willing to stump up some cash, provided he gets to give the lads some tips. Miss Carver insists Amy goes to see Miss Walker, and does so with trepidation. It turns out to be fairly harmless: Amy has to read a page, and write down some of the words in the piece. Amy goes home - her mother is going out for the evening. Amy wonders why there are no books in the flat, but her mother says they can't afford them. A lesson in which Mrs. Holmes talks about heroes inspires Year 8 to do something about the stolen football cup. Outside St. Joe's, Ben and Franco catch sight of one of the boys who they are sure are behind the theft. They corner him and demand that he arranges for Ben's boots and the trophy to be dropped off at the wasteland the following day, or they'll be back for him.

Episode #22.11

Amy's special class homework, already damaged by being sat on at home, is wrecked by Spencer Hargreaves - she turns round and goes home. When the Sixth Formers discuss their requirements for the car, Cracker's ears perk up and he starts writing down their needs list. Anika reports Spencer's actions to Mrs. Holmes, who gives him a stern warning. Mr. Hankin's grotesque Bull's eye in a jar is as unwelcome in the Staff Room as it is in Year 8's Science class. While Franco plans with his friends to pay back St. Joe's for taking the football trophy, Zoe is equally determined that no violence takes place. She hands in a note for Mr. Jones, giving Adam a cryptic comment that she'll thank him for what she's doing. Mrs. Holmes calls Amy's mother to see if Amy returned home, but Mrs. Davenport seems rather unsurprised to learn of her daughter's absence. Amy is sitting on a park bench, and a woman comes and sits next to her, feeding the ducks. She introduces herself as Doreen and confesses that when she was Amy's age, she used to bunk off school too. In the Staff Room, Mr. Jones is distracted from noticing Zoe's message in his pigeon hole by Mrs. Holmes asking him to move his car. As she does so, there's the sound of smashing glass as Mr. Hankin drops the bull's eye. "Get that eye out of my sight!" she demands. Nathan has a driving lesson - with a lady driving instructor - and dons his smart sunglasses as he smoothly gets into the car. His manner of driving, though, is more like a kangaroo. Dill seems to be having little success in matchmaking Colin and Becky together. Cracker takes the Sixth Formers to his father's stock of car parts. They aren't too pleased to find they are largely second hand, but nevertheless cut a deal with him - £200 changes hands. Everyone is happy - until Cracker's father appears on the scene, not particularly pleased at the prospect of his motor parts disappearing at his expense. The Year 8's arrive at the wasteground, ready for some aggro with the St. Joe's kids. Out on his driving lesson, Nathan is distracted by some pretty girls, toots his horn, and almost collides with a parked car. His instructor scolds him for his carelessness. On the wasteground, a few St. Joe's appear, and the Grange Hill lads are confident of a victory, but then more appear, and even more. Max loses his bottle and does a runner, followed by Ian and Adam. Back at school, Zoe finally finds the Sports Master, and gives him the note she'd intended he get much earlier. At the waste ground, Ben and Franco think better of aggression and make a bolt for the exit - the St. Joe's give a rallying cry, and run after them. Colin, Nathan, Kamal and Arnie have a couple of visitors as they look over the car - first, Kamal's father, then Becky and Dill. Dill shows some ability in car mechanics - identifying the problem of the H.T lead being disconnected. Back at the wasteground, Ben and Franco think they've escaped when they run down an alley and hide behind some dustbins, but when they emerge, they find some St. Joe's walking towards them, their exit blocked. Things look bad, but then Mr. Jones appears with Zoe, and disperses the St. Joe's. "St. Joseph's got off lightly today, won't be so lucky next time," says Franco.

Mr. Robson calls in Franco and Ben, determined to stop the fighting between them and the St. Joseph's boys. Colin finally asks Becky out, and she agrees to have lunch at the Arches. Becky has barely arrived when Kamal and the others appear, bursting with the news that Nathan has passed his theory test. On the basis that five is a crowd, Becky immediately leaves and Colin can't seem to persuade her to go on another date. Zoe has a plan to recover the trophy with less antagonistic methods, and grudgingly the boys accept her leadership. After school Spencer decides to follow Amy - he tries to persuade Darren to join him, but Darren refuses to come. Zoe leads Ian, Adam, Franco and Ben on a mission to find one of the St. Joseph boys involved in the football trophy theft. When they encounter one, Zoe demands to know where the trophy is, or she'll set Ian on him. They learn it's with someone called Nigel, and make their captive go to his house. Spencer finds that Amy has gone to the park, and when she arrives there, he taunts her, shouting at her, and calling her a thicko. She's saved when Doreen, the woman who befriended Amy at the pond, turns up. Spencer stands up to her for a while, calling her an old hag, but she's made of sterner stuff, and advances on him - he turns tail and runs. Zoe and her merry men arrive at Nigel's house, although they lose the St. Joe's boy when he wriggles free. Zoe rings the doorbell and keeps Nigel's mother busy while Ben creeps in through the back door. Zoe bursts into tears and spins a yarn about how Nigel's dumped her. While Ben looks around upstairs, Nigel and his mates approach. Ben does a quick search through the upstairs rooms, then sees the precious trophy on the window ledge of Nigel's bedroom. Not satisfied with that, Ben searches Nigel's cupboard until he finds his stolen football boots. Getting out of the house undetected is a bit of a problem, with Nigel's mother on the phone delightedly telling of her son's new girlfriend ("quite nice, but a bit weird"), and Nigel himself standing outside. Zoe flings her arms around Nigel to his bemusement, and then the St. Joe's realize that there's some kind of deception going on. As the St. Joseph boys rush into the house, Ben disappears into the front room, and climbs out of the window. "I've got it!" he says gleefully, holding up the football cup, and his boots. They return the trophy in Max's huge tuba case. Amy hands in her essay to Miss Walker, and stands up to Spencer's jibes with a new-found confidence, threatening him with her new friend. Mr. Robson sits down at his desk, then notices something. The stolen football trophy is mysteriously resting on a carved wooden hand on the side table. From outside, Zoe and the others watch, satisfied that things are all as they should be...

Episode #22.13

Kamal and the others put pressure on Arnie to fork out some cash to get the car through its MOT, seeing as he's only put in ten pounds so far. Spencer's found a new target for his bullying - Darren. He throws Darren's school bag in some bushes and tells him to "fetch". While Darren is retrieving the bag, he notices something in the bushes. Furtively he takes it school and puts it in his locker. Tracey tells Lisa it's her birthday, and shows the outrageously childish jumper her Aunt made for her. When Tracey explains that she's no special plans for her birthday, Lisa decides they must do something for her. The other Double Dare Gang members are of no help with their suggestions of skydiving and bungee jumping, but then Cracker notices one of Tracey's favourite groups is playing live on Friday - Lisa rushes off to try to get tickets for Ultramatic. Cracker distracts the secretary with a ludicrous requirement for stationery while Lisa steals the use of her phone - it's to no avail though, there are no tickets left. Darren takes Mr. Hankin to see what he's put in the locker - Spencer watches too from a safe distance. Darren carefully retrieves a white rabbit and explains that he can't keep it at home. In English, the class is studying Rambo - or rather the French writer "Rimbaud". As she hands out the necessary book, Miss Carver notices that Sarah Jane seems to be in a world of her own. Mr. Hankin puts the rabbit in a temporary cage, advising Darren to put up a notice that might potentially alert its owner near to where it was found. At Arnie's house Colin tells Arnie about his date with Becky - he's invited her round for dinner at his house. Arnie tells him it's a bad idea as he retrieves his savings book from a drawer, in order to get the cash out for the car. His father enters and questions Arnie about the savings book. Arnie's lie about making a deposit isn't convincing, and his father confiscates the savings book. With the cheek of the devil, Lisa once again gets use of the secretary's phone and this time tries the hotels in the area, working out where "Ultramatic" are staying by a process of elimination. Finally, and just as the secretary returns from the Head's office, Lisa gets the sort of response she was hoping for, and knows where to take Tracey as a birthday treat. Mrs. Holmes encounters Sarah-Jane in the corridor, and finds her not feeling well - the girl complains she can't think straight. When school comes to an end, the Double Dare boys are outside waiting for Lisa, and demand to know what she's up to with Tracey. She gives in and tells them they plan to go to the hotel where "Andy Tate" of Ultramatic are staying. They say she'll never get in, and Lisa bets them she can get Andy's autograph. Becky goes to Colin's house and they eat outside while Colin's father uses the barbecue. Afterwards he walks her home. Arnie's evening meal is less pleasant, with a burning resentment at his plans to withdraw the money for the car being scuppered by his father. When his father's out of the room, Arnie opens his father's case, and takes out the savings book, a look of determination on his face...

Episode #22.14

Sarah-Jane is still in a world of her own. The car being worked on by Arnie, Kamal, Colin and Nathan goes in to its MOT - and passes. Colin is planning a cinema date with Becky. Mr. Hankin acquires food scraps for "Refugee", the rabbit Darren found, which still has not been reclaimed. Lisa and Tracey are getting ready for their "Church Disco" - Tracy still doesn't know what Lisa is up to, and in reality it is a trip to the hotel where Tracy's favourite band are staying. Tom, Matt and Cracker are worried about the safety of Lisa and Tracy in the company of wild rock band members. Dill gets a ride in the newly fixed up car. Both Tracey and Lisa are not pleased to find the male members of the Double Dare Gang in the Arches café. They gasp in astonishment when they see how dolled up Lisa is. The girls leave the café and Lisa hails a taxi, while the boys follow them hailing one of their own. They utter the immortal lines "follow that cab" and pursue the girls. Colin arrives at Becky's house with flowers - but her father has arrived, and Colin gallantly leaves. At first Becky is just glad to see her estranged dad, but then it emerges that he has an ulterior motive. He explains that he needs the money that would be raised by selling the home that Becky and her mum lives in. Lisa arrives at the hotel and finally explains the game plan to Tracy: they sit down in reception, but they are closely followed by Tom, Cracker and Matt. Lisa cheekily picks out a random guest name (Mr. Montegue) she espies on a card, and says that she has come to see her uncle who is staying - "Uncle Monty", she says. After mucking around in the lifts for a while, the boys finally make themselves visible to the two girls. Lisa's angry that the boys are destroying Tracy's treat, but Tom offers to buy Lisa dinner - well, fish and chips from the shop round the corner, and Matt stays behind with Tracy. At Becky's house, she gets upset at her father's callous attitude, and asks him to go. Having cheekily had their fish and chips in the hotel foyer, the concierge asks Lisa and her friends to leave. When they are outside they realize Tracy's not with them. They leave her though, on the basis that she might get to meet "Ultramatic". When Tracy emerges from the hotel toilets she finds only the concierge ready to turf her out, but she is saved from that by a middle aged man who claims she is with him. When the Double Dare Gang's taxi arrives home, Matt becomes adamant that they must go back and rescue Tracey. Meanwhile Tracy's male companion does seem to be getting a little fresh, suggesting they go back to his hotel room. Matt bursts into the hotel and finds out that Tracy has been with someone else - but there's no sign of either of them. Just then, Ultramatic turn up and Matt learns that their concert has been cancelled due to a problem in the equipment. Before they turn to leave, he begs autographs, and gets a bundle of stuff in return. Tracy comes out of the loos, and Matt gives her the memorabilia, getting a kiss in return. In the taxi, Cracker and Lisa argue the toss over who won the bet that Lisa would get an autograph - they decide on a draw. Together on the back seat, Tracy and Matt exchange a private smile...

Episode #22.15

Sarah-Jane starts the day by taking a handful of pills from the medicine cabinet... At school, Matt and Tracy seem close - "It's not right," says Lisa, seeing their intimacy as a betrayal of Gemma. Darren brings some food in for Rabbit, Refugee, while Spencer talks about rabbit pie. Darren is keen on making the rabbit hutch bigger and elicits the help of Calvin. Nathan prepares for his Driving Test full of confidence. In History class, Evelyn drops her pencil case near Sarah-Jane, but instead of helping, Sarah-Jane stares zombie-like ahead. Afterwards she drops her books and complains of dizziness to Kelly. Colin is disturbed to find no Becky at school, and no-one answering her home phone. Nathan's test doesn't start too well when he attempts to get in the passenger side and then forgets his seat belt. After that, it's all downhill, with poor reversing, bad control, and near collisions - and when his test is over, he is told he has failed. The wind is let out of Lisa's sails when Matt tells her he's actually talked to Gemma over the phone about Tracy and the three are reconciled as friends again. Colin visits Becky's house, and at first her mother won't let Colin in, but then changes her mind. Inside, Colin is astonished when Becky appears in tears and falls into his arms: she tells him about her father's plans to sell the house, though she hopes she and her mother will find somewhere local to live. They kiss, and Becky smiles. At night, it's very late and Sarah Jane is finishing her essay on the computer. Then disaster strikes - the power goes off momentarily and she loses her work. Beginning to panic, she reaches into her coat pocket, and takes one of her pills. She sits on the bed, and holds her head in her hands...

Episode #22.16

Sarah-Jane continues to act in a withdrawn and stressed manner. Mr. Jones is keen on Year 8's doing an outward bound course, but Mr. Robson suggests that it would be better to send Year 11's, as a way of letting off steam after the shock of losing Judi Jeffries. Nathan can't bring himself to correct Dill's assumption that he passed his test, as she gives him some "P" plates as a present. Then it emerges that the other Sixth Formers don't yet realize he failed his test: they are planning a trip to Brighton, and are confused that he's trying to wriggle out of his share of the driving. Nathan decides that he'd be better off to give the trip a miss altogether. Mr. Jones sells the outdoor trip to a rather underwhelmed Year 11, but at least Ms. Carver seems keen. Later though, she merely says she thought it was a good idea, but to Mr. Jones's horror, Mrs. Holmes volunteers to be the necessary female staff. Kamal isn't pleased when Colin bows out of the planned trip in the car, especially after Nathan's opted out, but Colin has an evening alone with Becky planned. Evelyn and Kelly pressure Sarah-Jane to put her name on the outward bound course, and she complies just to get them out of her hair. Darren and Calvin complete their larger rabbit hutch and Mr. Hankin gives his approval. Arnie gets home to find his father has noticed the missing savings book. Arnie's dad insists he calls Kamal to tell him that he's not able to go out. Feeling sorry for himself, and finding no real sympathy from his brother and mum, Kamal heads out alone. He encounters Colin outside Becky's house and tries to persuade Colin to go to Brighton. Colin has no intention of going, but Becky senses that Kamal's need is greater than her own, and insists that Colin goes with Kamal. To begin with, Colin is grumpy with Kamal, but relaxes after a while, enjoying the freedom of the road. Night falls, and the cassette system starts acting up. Colin is unable to eject the tape, and irritably, Kamal takes his attention off the road to try himself. A moment later, and suddenly there's a cyclist in front of them and Kamal can't avoid a collision. The car swipes the bike, and Kamal slams on the brakes. Reversing to check on the rider, there seems no movement. "I think we've killed him," says Colin with mounting horror. Kamal steps on the accelerator, and their car moves away. "Stop the car!" says Colin, but his friend pays him no heed at first. Finally Colin makes Kamal stop, and gets out, expecting Kamal to follow - instead the car is briskly driven away, leaving Colin stranded...

Episode #22.17

The day after the accident, Colin tries to make Kamal see sense, but can't persuade him to go to the police. As Mr. Jones and Mrs. Holmes give instructions for the imminent adventure trip, Sarah-Jane tries (and fails) to wriggle out of going. The Sports master continues to try to persuade Ms. Carver to go on the trip instead of Mrs. Holmes. Darren unveils his latest addition to the rabbit hutch - a bunk bed which just needs some oil on it to act as preservative. Spencer tries to get involved, but he's burnt his bridges as far as Darren is concerned. They go to fetch Mr. Hankin, making do with Ms. Carver in his absence, but when they return to the lab, the new bed has been broken. They say they don't know how it happened, but it's pretty obvious who the culprit is - Spencer, who is hiding behind the benches. Arnie asks Kamal if his brother might buy out his share of the car, since his father is demanding his savings be replenished. Kamal reacts badly to the suggestion, saying that Arnie was lucky to have that money in the first place. Mr. Jones gives Year 11 a first-aid demonstration of the kiss of life. Becky is bewildered by Colin's avoidance of her. Colin sits in the Arches when he hears a news item about the accident, learning that the cyclist is in a critical condition. He seems to reach a decision, but as he leaves Becky enters. His abrupt departure confirms her thought that he's wanting to end their relationship. Cracker starts an evening job at the Arches. Colin is in there, deep in thought. Dill tells him he's close to losing Becky unless he talks to her. The Double Dare Gang are also there, keen to wind up Cracker. After they've gone, Ray asks him to throw some stale sandwiches out, but Cracker's entrepreneurial spirit sees a better use from them. Colin visits Kamal's house, on the pretence of going to play pool. Kamal is terrified that Colin will say something about the accident, and rudely says he's too busy with homework. Colin leaves, and from a call box, rings the hospital where the news item said the injured man was being treated. The hospital want to know who he is before giving out such information, and Colin quickly hangs up...

Episode #22.18

In his dreams, Colin revisits the moment of the accident where a cyclist was knocked down. The Outward Bound coach gets underway: Mr. Jones is pleased to see Sarah-Jane make an appearance, but fails in his last-ditch attempt to get Ms. Carver along. Meanwhile, Cracker sprays a little water over the old sandwiches in preparation for selling them. Tom manages to secure a percentage profits, but has to be the dogsbody, wrapping up the food in cellophane. Nathan is forced to tell Dill that he didn't pass his test. The Outward bound coach arrives at its destination, and the first activity is caving, with Kelly, Evelyn and the morose Sarah-Jane participating. Back at school, Becky just walks past Colin in the corridor while Arnie and Nathan decide that Kamal's reluctance to bring the car to school points the finger at some kind of scam - their money has been used to get the car through its MOT. Back at camp, Wayne, and Kelly are in a tight space underground, the cave lighted only by the helmet torches. Wayne and Kelly joke around, but suddenly Kelly finds that Sarah-Jane isn't responding to her calls. Backing up, they find Sarah-Jane having a panic attack, because her lamp has gone out. Kelly restores the connection, and Sarah-Jane asks if Kelly can get her pills. Kelly gets Wayne to go, Sarah-Jane begging him not to mention the pills to anyone. While Kelly manoeuvres the girl back to the surface, Wayne fetches her pills, recognizing what they actually are. Back at school, Cracker and Tom divide the profits from the sandwich sale, pleased at their venture. After school, Becky finds Colin in tears, and she puts her arms around him. At the Outward Bound centre, Wayne crossly demands of Sarah-Jane why she's taking Tamazapam - anti-depressants - she tells him it's none of his business, and it's on prescription by her doctor. Arnie and Nathan are determined to get to the truth of the car business, and call round to see Kamal's brother. Saheed doesn't know what they are talking about, saying he has no plans to sell the car on, and has been using his own vehicle. At the café, Colin tells Becky everything about the accident. At camp, there's a barbecue at the end of the day, and Wayne takes a couple of burgers over to Sarah-Jane, who is lost in her own thoughts. He tells her he's worried about her - the kind of tablets she has been taking are the kind his brother sells. He tells her she is at risk of becoming addicted and begs her to throw them out. The coach heads back to Northam, and as it reaches its destination, it passes Colin and Becky who are on their way into the police station...

Episode #22.19

The police come a-knocking at the door of Kamal after Colin's visit to the police station. Colin is told that he's released without charge, because it's only the driver who might be prosecuted. When Kamal is interviewed, with his father sitting beside him, his first story is that they drove into town, and nothing happened: but there's still the question of how the car got damaged. When Colin goes back to school, it doesn't take much for Becky to blurt out the story. Kamal is restrained from leaving his house until his father gets to the root of the story. His brother finds out that Kamal was driving without insurance. Sarah-Jane asks Wayne if she can talk to his brother about the Tamazapam - he laughs at the suggestion. The second-hand sandwich selling gets underway again, and this time Spencer profits from the idea by selling on his "prawn supreme" to Mrs. Holmes at a profit. At Kamal's house, forensics are done on the car. Sarah-Jane confides in Wayne that she's run out of "jellies" - the anti-depressants she was taking. Wayne realizes that she wanted to speak to his brother to get some more. As Mrs. Holmes is teaching Year 9 about the improvements in food hygiene, she suddenly doubles up in pain, as Cracker's second-hand sandwich makes its presence felt in her stomach. She's not alone, as Cracker and Tom observe several others running desperately for the toilets. Mr. Robson learns of Colin's predicament, and manages to phone through to the hospital - he relays the bad news that the cyclist is still critically ill. Kamal goes to the school gates to see Colin, but changes his mind and heads back home. There, the police are waiting, and have confirmed that the BMW was the vehicle involved. Kamal's father asks for a private word with his son, and tells him that he'll stand by him, whatever happens. Finally, Kamal admits he was driving the car at the time of the accident.

Episode #22.20

It is the day of Kamal's court case. Sarah-Jane makes out a prescription request, as though from her mother, and asking for herself to collect it. It's the last chance for Refugee the rabbit's real owner to come forward before Darren gets to keep him. Sarah-Jane finds that the surgery won't just give her a prescription straight away. When she returns to school she becomes increasingly irritable to Wayne and Kelly. Arnie, Nathan and Dill arrive at the Youth Court, but they are not permitted to stay. Kamal arrives with his family and, stony-faced, walks past the trio. Before they go inside, Kamal's brother turns round and gives Arnie an envelope with £750 inside. "I don't want you to think our family doesn't pay its debts," he says. Colin also turns up, be gets no further inside, despite loud protestations that Kamal needs his evidence. To Darren's disappointment someone calls the school to claim the rabbit. When Mr. Hankin hands over Refugee, Darren runs off in tears. In court, the charges are stacked against Kamal: driving without insurance, hitting a cyclist, failing to report the incident. He expresses the thought that he was a coward, and wishes to be punished. Sarah-Jane's plan to get her forged prescription made up fail when the doctor insists on her mother visiting. Tom and Cracker's venture is rumbled when Mr. Robson hears them counting out their money - Cracker explains it is for school funds, so the Head gratefully grabs the cash. He tells them that it's been a good day for discovering things - Mr. Jones just found a trolley full of goodies. (their supplies, of course). Mr. Hankin has a surprise for Darren - under the pretence of making the boy help take down the hutch, he reveals a new rabbit, bought by Refugee's owners to make up for Darren's loss. Sarah-Jane, unable to function without her pills, knocks on Wayne's door, asking for his help to come off her dependency. It's time for the magistrate to pronounce the outcome of Kamal's case. He is heavily fined and disqualified from driving for a year. Outside, he tells of his £250 fine, and renews his friendship with Colin. Kamal has decided that he'll visit the injured man, and Colin tells him he wants to go too...
