20 Episodes 1998 - 1998
Episode 1
It's Caveman Day for Year Seven - or Cave Person day, as Ms. Carver calls it. The kids have to find hidden tokens, and are grouped as Gatherers, Hunters or Settlers. Gemma (now working with the other Double Dare Gang members) suggests that they wind up new French teacher Christoph Urdy, by all saying "Je me piddle" rather than "Je m'apelle". Cracker thinks there are more important things going on though, when he witnesses Mrs. Holmes talking about monsters, and black slime in the now absent Mr. McNab's office. He can't resist taking a look, but the police are also headed for there. He holds the door handle inside the badly vandalized room, so they think it's shut. Joanna seems to have recovered from her drink problem - or is she just becoming better at hiding it? Chrisoph's having some difficulty controlling his riotous Year 8 class, especially when they seem to have their own version of French, what with "je me piddle" and "quatre cinq sex sept" - "sex is not right," he says to the amusement of his class. Dudley's getting nowhere with Claire who doesn't even notice his romantic aspirations while they are helping set up the tokens for Caveman Day. Joanna borrows money from Carlene to buy a present for her mum, but later seems to not have it - she makes an excuse about having lost it. Meanwhile, in the woods, Adam Hawkins gets "caught" by Dai Jones's hunter team, but seems to be taking things too seriously - he runs off into the no-go area. He trips and falls, and looks up to see an unshaven man, and vicious looking dog above him.

Episode 2
Things look bad for Adam, who has run off into the woods, tripped and fallen, and now has a poacher and his dog standing aggressively above him. The poacher warns him to keep quiet about who he's seen. The sudden disappearance of Mr. McNab causes speculation among the Double Dare Gang. When they overhear Mrs. Maguire's conversation with Mr. Robson, the word "disappeared" confirms their belief that something weird has happened to their former Headmaster. Mr. Robson arrives in the woods and is told of Adam's disappearance, with Zoe's added comments about her having seen a wolf. On his own, Adam descends and another, more friendly dog approaches - Adam feeds it. Back at base camp, the police have arrived with sniffer dogs. Adam runs through the trees, night has fallen and it's hard to see where he's going. He runs into the poacher again and his dog, but before the poacher can do anything, the friendly dog intervenes, scaring off the poacher and his dog. Adam emerges from the woods in sight of the police marksman, with the friendly dog, and puts his arms around it, just as the police are about to shoot it. Relieved, the staff get into the coach and prepare to leave, but there's a stowaway - Adam's new friend has stowed away in the luggage compartment. Joanna borrows a tenner to buy her mother a present (claiming to have lost the earrings she bought), but when she gets to the shop, she lifts some earrings instead of paying for them. The caretaker finds Adam alone near the dustbins and has a bit of a pep talk with him. The Double Dare gang have found an application form for the role of Headmaster, and have usefully filled it in with joke entries. Mrs. Holmes catches them, and takes it off them, and finding Mr. Robson's name at the top, confronts him about his desire to be the school's head. He denies applying for the job, at least not at Grange Hill, but she shows him the evidence. He points out the frivolous nature of the entries, and having been made a fool of, she backs down. Joanna and her brother surprise their mother on her birthday when she gets home, but she's in too much of a rush as usual to pay them much attention. Hugely upset by her mother's lack of interest, Joanna heads out into the night, puts on a brave face and appears in Ray's café. Meanwhile, Adam Hawkins has a rendezvous back at school - the stray dog that followed him back from their trip to the woods is being kept there in secret, in the boiler room.

Episode 3
More and people start hearing a dog howling around school. Joanna's shoplifted earrings cause her grief when her mother insists on returning them to the shop to get them upgraded. Miss Carver unveils her "babies" to an unimpressed Year 8 - bags of flour that they have to treat as babies, and take care of for a week. Mrs. Holmes applies for the job of Head at Grange Hill to everyone's dismay, and seems to have started making changes already - she tells a disgruntled Sixth Form that their common room will become a GCSE study area. After dressing up their flour babies (!) the Double Dare Gang are interrogated by Mr. Robson about their involvement in making a fake job application for him. They are all ready to deny involvement, but Gemma has a deeper understanding of psychology and admits their guilt. She tells him that they did it because they were so concerned at Mrs. Holmes becoming the new Head. Gemma is successful - they are let off with a warning. Adam's secret dog is evidently ill, and he doesn't know what to do about it. At lunchtime, Matt gets told off by Miss Carver for leaving his "baby" in his locker! While he's running to it, he sees the Headmaster's office occupied by men in "space suits". He bumps into Lisa, and she goes to investigate - but the mystery deepens when she does not arrive at the French class. Matt and Cracker make an excuse (about a leaky flour baby) and go to seek her out. They find her flour baby, but not her. Finally they spot her and an "alien" about to enter the prep room - Matt locks the alien in, while Lisa looks at him in amazement. Mr. Hankin is nearby and asks what's going on - it's just a security guard that Matt saw, wearing a protective visor. Eddie, coming home with a mate, is horrified to see Joanna drinking vodka. Adam finds his normal entry blocked, so has to break a window to check on his dog - he finds that she has given birth to a set of healthy pups. Colin negotiates with Ray to do the karaoke that's planned for the Arches. Adam collects the pups, and encourages the mother to leave with him, just as Zoe arrives outside with Sian, Max and Franco. Zoe's troop find no dog inside the old building, but Zoe insists she can sense a dog - perhaps it is a ghost dog! They decide to hold a séance for it, but then that changes into a séance for Sian's grandmother. As they call for her, a breeze blows eerily across their jam-jar candle. Outside, Adam finds a new hiding place in the school grounds, but as he descends the stairs, he hears Mr. Robson and the caretaker outside, and the door to his outbuilding is locked. Meanwhile, Zoe's lot have their nerves on edge - the window bangs, and they shriek. Outside, Mr. Robson hears them just as he's getting into his car. "Is there anybody there?" calls Zoe, and there's a loud voice in reply - "There most certainly is!" - says an angry Deputy Head. Things look bad for them, but worse for Adam, in tears, and alone in the dark with no way out.

Episode 4
In his hideout, Adam wakes up - he finds blood from the dog on his hands, and Tess doesn't respond. The caretaker arrives, and is alerted to Adam's shouts. Meanwhile, Joanna is reluctantly back at the shop she stole the earrings from, accompanied by her mother who insists on changing them. Luckily for Joanna, the shop assistant refuses the "upgrade" on hygiene grounds. Zoe, Sian, Max and Franco meet the wrath of Mr. Robson for their supernatural "mumbo jumbo", but they deny breaking the window. Joanna sips her orange juice in Ray's café, saying she's on the wagon - but she's secretly dropped in spirits into her glass. A RSPCA vet arrives and takes care of Adam's dog, while Mr. Robson persuades Adam to go and speak to his foster mother on the phone. Gemma accidentally hits on a profitable venture - babysitting the "flour babies", for a price - chocolate! Sarah-Jane, Judi and Kelly find the sight of her sitting in a room alone with them hilarious - Gemma signals them to hush! After school, Miss Carver takes Adam to the vet - the dog is fine. The next day, while there's confusion at the front gates over the new security, there's further chaos in the Sixth Form Common Room, where a sit-in is taking place. Gemma does another stint at flour-baby-sitting - but when Cracker arrives later, Gemma's dozed off - and all the powdery infants are missing! A ransom note is found, telling them to wait at the phone box at 1pm. They hear a call from an American voice (Kelly) who negotiates for the release of the hostages - in return for Gemma's chocolate bars. Mrs. Maguire persuades Mr. Robson to apply for the job of Head at Grange Hill, horrified at the thought of Mrs. Holmes getting the job. Joanna, left to do some photocopies in the office, finds a bottle of Scotch, which she appropriates. Meanwhile, Judi's gang cruelly drop the flour babies near to Cracker's position in the playground, but Gemma observes Sarah Jane getting them from her locker, and applies a dollop of super glue to her lock in revenge. Alec delights in picking it up and further breaking the packet against the wall. The Double Dare gang rebuild Cracker's baby (they cheat and find a new packet of flour). Miss Carver congratulates the class, and Gemma wins a book token (to her disgust). Afterwards, they have a flour fight in the corridor, while Sarah Jane struggles to get her locker open. "Can't you just grow up?" she says - an unwise thing to say, as she gets pelted with flour. In the café, Colin's incompetence in setting up the karaoke system is apparent - Ray sees him trying to jam a male plug into a male connector, and tells him he needs a female - Dill will be along in a minute, he replies, misunderstanding Ray's meaning. Outside the vets, Adam watches "his" dog and one of the puppies get reclaimed, and then back alone in his foster home, he draws a picture of Tess. He pastes the drawing in his scrapbook, opposite a newspaper cutting which has the headline "Boy sees mother murdered." As the karaoke gets underway in Ray's café, Nathan proves to be a pro and puts the crowd in a good mood, to make them even appreciate Colin's brave attempt. Joanna, who's already consumed a fair amount of whiskey, is the only objecting to Colin's singing - the others defend him. Joanna takes the microphone, and she sings a ballad impeccably, until she overbalances bringing the song to an abrupt end. She rushes outside and is sick - Chris tries to help, but she shouts incoherently at him and is sick further by the dustbins. Ray locks up the café, as everyone departs happily. Joanna is left behind the dustbins, crying...

Episode 5
Ray makes a disturbing discovery in the morning - Joanna lying amongst the refuse. Mr. Robson opens a letter, and shouts "yes!" joyfully. His pleasure is diminished as he walks into the playground, and is struck by a "snakeboard"-borne Lisa. In the staffroom, Mr. Robson is applauded for getting the job of Head. Lisa is upset by Tom's showing off of his expertise on his snake-board. Something makes her challenge him to a race - if she wins, she gets the board - Gemma promises to help. Max and Adam are unified in their disgust at Mr. Jones's bullying in P.E. Joanna's in hospital, and her mother tries to get to the root of what's up with her. Joanna confesses she hates herself and explains she's been drinking for a year. Adam goes to Max's house, and with Franco and Max's other friends plays pool. Franco suggests they play Chinese baseball - using the cue as a baseball bat, and Adam's hit breaks a glass cabinet in the house. Adam walks away, and Max tells him not to come back. The next day, Adam puts his foot in it by telling Mr. Hankin that Max wears glasses - Max was trying to do without them. Later, Ian deliberately pushes Max's glasses onto the floor, and when one of the lens rolls away, crushes it under his boot, and then says he saw "Wolf Boy" - i.e Adam do it. Chris and Laurie are finally an item - Chris kisses her when she's carrying hockey sticks, and she responds positively. As school ends, Max confronts Adam about his crushed lens, and Adam denies it, rushing away to cries of "Wolf Boy". Zoe finds an old photo of Adam and a woman that must have fallen from his pocket, but she can't reach him before he's gone.

Episode 6
The snake-board challenge looms nearer, and Gemma manages to put some doubt in the boys' confidence in Tom. In Mr. Urdy's French class, Ian and Franco use rulers to fire pellets at the teacher while the lights are off for a film, but it's Adam who gets the blame. Zoe sticks up for Adam, but Mr. Urdy gives the whole class a detention, and because it was dark, everyone blames Adam rather than Ian. Gemma and Lisa visit the skateboard park, and hatch a plan to make Lisa "win" the challenge. Chris and Laurie go shopping and then to the cinema. He takes her to her house, but won't come in - she kisses him passionately to let him know what he's missing. Lucy returns from hospital and is very subdued, thanking Ray apologizing to Chris, and talking to the others in the Sixth Form about her drink problem. While Ian continues to encourage the others to taunt Adam, Zoe sits under a tree with him and digs out his family history - he tells her his mother died of a heart attack. The snake-board challenge starts. Tom takes an early lead, but then while Lisa is out of sight, a boy dressed up like Lisa, and a fair approximation too, takes her place. The Lisa-look-a-like speeds into the lead, and when he's out of sight of Tom, Lisa takes his place to scoot to the finishing line. Tom hands over his board, but Lisa's victory suddenly feels hollow. Meanwhile, in the detention class, Ian has put a glass over the biology lab gerbil, threatening to suffocate it unless Adam confesses that he alone was firing pellets in Mr. Urdy's class. The class is against Ian, but he won't budge. Then suddenly Adam shouts at Ian to let it out, and Ian moves aside in shock: Adam picks up the glass and flings it Ian, where it smashes against the wall. Adam glares threateningly at Ian, who climbs onto a desk. Mr. Jones enters the room, and as he does so Adam runs out...

Episode 7
Tom is confused to find Lisa has returned his snake-board. Ian's father comes to school to confront Mr. Robson about the incident with Adam. Laurie learns that Mr. Urdy plans a school skiing trip. There are newcomers to school - self-assured Nathan, and Scottish Sean who already knows Alec. Nathan's mobile phone goes off - and he answers it to the astonishment of Mrs. Holmes. Sean learns that Alec is interested in Judi: he gives his friend the opportunity of talking to her, but Alec blows the chance. In hockey practice, it seems that Colin's beaten Alec to Judi. Gemma boldly asks Matt out, but he refuses point blank, but Gemma's not so easily discouraged. Alec and Sean bully Matt into being a messenger, taking a note to Judi. In the staff meeting about Adam, Miss Carver is the only one who sticks up for him, but there's a surprise waiting for her when she returns to her car - Adam has hidden himself inside. As she drives in the rain, she suddenly hears him sneeze - she almost has an accident, but brings the car safely to a halt. He runs out into the night: at home, Miss Carver receives a phone call - no-one answers when she picks up, but shortly after Adam knocks at the door soaking wet and crying. After he's eaten, Miss Carver persuades him to reveal his home phone number, and she gets agreement from the foster home that he can stay the night. Meanwhile, Colin sees Judi to the bus stop after an evening at the café - she's only really interested in the hockey practice, but he's got another agenda. They are watched by Alec and Sean, who are trying to work out a way of getting rid of Colin. At Miss Carver's home, Adam is a bit put out by her instance of him doing homework, rather than watching videos - her Spartan lifestyle surprises him. Colin walks home, and as he walks by, Sean watches him thoughtfully. In the night, Adam suddenly screams out. Miss Carver comes to his side. Out on the streets, Ray is on his way home when he hears a disturbance in the underpass tunnel. He sees some youths run off, and someone lying on the ground. He runs to investigate who it is...

Episode 8
Gemma just won't accept Matt's refusal to become her boyfriend. Mr. Brisley finds a certain lack of enthusiasm in the performance arts fashion show, except for new lad Nathan who wants to sell tickets. Potential foster parents for Adam come to school, but Miss Carver, who's still looking after the boy has her doubts about them. Alone with Zoe, Adam confides in her that he wants to live with Miss Carver. Nathan promises to arrange the sound for Mr. Brisley's show - but he has his own ideas for encouraging ticket sales - perhaps a "Rave" would be a more saleable idea? Colin makes his entrance in Chistophe Urdy's French class in dark glasses - his face is badly bloodied and bruised. Zoe mentions in passing to Miss Carver that Adam's mother is dead from a heart attack - the teacher is surprised and goes to Mr Robson to read the complete file on Adam. Miss Carver finds out the truth - that Adam's mother was murdered. Meanwhile, Colin's friends are intent on vigilante revenge for Colin's beating, with Laurie trying to dissuade Chris and Arnie vociferously. Matt's lack of the entrance fee for the Fashion Show gives Gemma an opportunity - she gives him the money for two tickets, forcing him to sit next to her. Judi though is having little success in getting Wayne to take any notice of her. Chris breaks the bad news to Laurie - his parents won't let him go skiing - Laurie says she doesn't want to go either in that case. Reaction to Mr. Brisleys arty show changes when Nathan switches the music to a more club-style mix, once the teacher's disappeared from view. His disapproval when he returns is countered by praise from everyone else. Sean tries to engineer Judi's interest in Alec, but she dismisses him without a thought, happy to be near to Wayne, before he suddenly shoots off. Then things start getting out of hand - Nathan can't (or won't) turn the volume down, and in the stifled heat, some of the girls start fainting, and new people are coming in who definitely don't go to Grange Hill. Amid the confusion, Sean makes good use of a crowbar to free some imprisoned Coke cans. Outside, Wayne walks Judi home, while Alec looks on outraged at the injustice of his indifferent success with her. Laurie has her own success too - Chris agrees to come back to her place. Mr. Robson enters the chaotic school as the plug is finally pulled on the sound system, an alarm sounding through the building as he restrains Nathan.

Episode 9
Sean is still sore at Wayne for taking Judi home, and confronts him with some of his mates, but his intimidation seems to have no effect. Hiding behind the defunct drinks machine, Ian overhears Miss Carver telling Mr. Brisley about Adam's mum being murdered. Ian wastes no time in getting together a gang to taunt him, while Zoe tries to defend Adam. As Miss Carver's class begins, Ian spitefully tells Adam that he was told about his mother's murder by Miss Carver: Adam punches him, and when Miss Carver arrives, astounded at the fighting, Adam tells her that he thought he could trust her and leaves. Later, Zoe tells Miss Carver that Ian said he was told about Adam's true situation - leaving her confused as to how the information was leaked. While his parents are away at a religious event, leaving their son to babysit, Laurie and Chris waste no time making use of the empty house. On the bed, Chris seems a little shocked when Laurie reveals that she's come prepared for safe sex... Miss Carver goes to see Adam's foster parents to explain the situation, but they find he's gone from his room. She follows a hunch and drives to the house he used to live in, now derelict, with boarded-up windows. Inside, she persuades him that it's time to move on. The next day, Chris and Laurie's relationship has subtly changed after their intimacy: Chris is becoming annoyed at Laurie's continuous demands to be with him. Judi and Wayne also seem to be getting closer in their relationship, though with Alec doggedly still not giving up on her. At hockey practice, Arnie and Colin help Chris to remain out of Laurie's clutches, but she takes his evident cooling off badly. Finally, Laurie finds Chris in the café, and he tells her that she's crowding him. She tells him to get lost and walks away...

Episode 10
Wayne's threatened once again by Sean and his gang on the housing estate, but takes no notice and goes round to Judi's house for tea. He is a bit embarrassed to find Judi's mother at the table, with a cake that Judi baked. After Wayne's left, Judi's mother confides in her that she doesn't like the look of Wayne: she thinks he has a "hard face". Tom and Cracker have a secret that they aren't sharing with Matt - just what is in the bag that Tom has to return to Gregory before 9.00 am? Dill becomes a go-between for Chris and Laurie, who still aren't on speaking terms - Dill acts like she is being a friend to Laurie, but it's becoming clear that Chris has become interested in her - or is it the other way round? Matt finds out what's in Tom's brown paper bag - or thinks he does - it's a dirty video, the girls tell him. Chris catches up with Laurie, and tells her that he wants them to get back together, that it was all a misunderstanding: he seems astonished when she immediately agrees. Laurie mildly chides Dill, wisely perceiving that she was trying to grab Chris for herself. Matt succumbs to temptation when he learns Cracker still has the tape in the brown paper bag, and gives him a pound to borrow it. The next day, the Double Dare boys outwit Gregory who's been lending out the tape, and manage to keep the precious brown bag. it's evidently something other than a porno tape, as they solemnly agree to pretend it a dirty movie. Then Tracy tears by and grabs it. Alec manages to get a proper chance to talk to Judi, but as he does so, Wayne steps in, and confronts him. Mr. Brisley breaks things up before they turn nasty, but Judi's not happy at being the centre of the ugly scene, and out of sight, Sean watches Alec's failure. The truth emerges about the dodgy video - it's the Cindy Crawford Workout Video! As Sean leaves with Alec, he tells his friend that something will have to be done about Wayne. It's dark and raining when Judi and Wayne head for home. Meanwhile, a gang of hooded youths step into the street, and a knife is flicked open. They head menacingly towards the figure in Wayne's coat... Meanwhile Wayne enters the Arches, explaining to proprietor Ray that he lent Judi his coat - he picks up his wallet which he'd dropped and heads back out. He can't immediately find her, then he sees her in distress among the rubbish, blood on her face...

Episode 11
Wayne goes to see Judi in hospital: she sits with a bandage across her face. Chris and Laurie are on their way home from the pictures and see the police outside the Arches - Ray explains that some girl from Grange Hill was knifed. Wayne gets grief from Judi's mother when they arrive home, the event having confirmed Mrs. Jeffreys' suspicions about him. At school, Mr. Robson makes a special announcement to allay general fears about the attacks, after the rumours start. Sean and Alec arrive late at school and meet with something of an interrogation from a suspicious Detective Inspector (who knows Sean), and Mr. Robson. The Double Dare Gang are keen to have a go at roller hockey, but an exasperated Arnie finds that they are not properly equipped for play and dismisses them. Later, Mr. Robson bends Arnie's ear, persuading him that if they do get the necessary gear the younger set can play. Wayne overhears Sean's suggestion that someone from Oakwood School might have been involved in Judi's attack, and removes his tie and boldly walks into the school, meeting up with an old junior school friend, Sammy. Sammy doesn't know of any anti-Grange Hill feeling, but suggests Wayne looks for Judi's former boyfriends who might be out for revenge. Laurie asks Chris to go to meet her parents, but when he gets home he finds the arrangement conflicts with the "Naming Day" of his new baby sister. Chris leaves angrily, and meets up with Dill who is helping Ray out at the café. Wayne finally gets to see Judi, though it is with great reluctance that Judi's mother lets him in. Wayne is angry that the police seem to be doing nothing, and Judi wishes he would be calmer. She tells him that her face will have a large scar from her attack. At the Arches, Dill convinces Chris he ought to go the celebrations after the Naming Day of his sister, but he insists she should come too. The Double Dare Gang make good use of the Woodwork lesson - making the necessary blades for makeshift, but functional, hockey sticks. "Let's see what these sticks can do," says Tom, striking the ball so fiercely that the end breaks off, flies through the air and almost hits the P.E. teacher. He angrily points out that their amateur equipment is damaging the Gym floor. Afterwards, with their equipment confiscated all seems lost - but Gemma has an idea - sponsorship: they start scouring the Yellow Pages for would-be sports gear sponsors. Judi is surprised to find Alec on the doorstep with a bunch of flowers. Things look set to get difficult for Chris, with his lunchtime date with Laurie's parents moved to the evening. Wayne rings Judi's doorbell, and Judi's mother opens the door. With a certain degree of smugness, she says "I see you haven't brought any flowers," as Alec leaves the flat...

Episode 12
Good news for the Double Dare Gang, when they get a hopeful reply for their hockey gear sponsorship idea. Judi's going back to school, but wants to keep the scar covered up. Wayne has a minor confrontation with Alec again, telling him he doesn't want him going round to his girlfriend's house; Judi, though, could do without the aggravation. A van labelled "Savage Sports" turns up at school, with new gear in the back - Cracker jumps to conclusions and starts removing some of it, assuming it's the sponsorship deal. Arnie says it must be for the proper roller hockey team, and then Mr. Robson intervenes and arranges for it all to be stored in reception. Later, he works out how the sponsorship deal came about, and the hockey equipment is set for general school use. Chris makes an arrangement to see Laurie after his sister's Naming, forgetting he's already promised the evening with Dill. Dill for her part moons over Chris, jealously watching him with Laurie. Tom and Arnie decide they'll play a roller hockey match to decide who gets to keep the new gear. Arnie's team are down a man (Chris doesn't make it), but with the Double Dare Gang's dilapidated equipment, his team are still confident. It all looks like a disaster for the younger players, as they lose 10-0, and then to cap it all, Cracker sits on Gemma's glasses. In anticipation of acquiring the new gear, Arnie's team hands over their existing equipment. Then comes the bombshell - Mr Robson tells Arnie that the new equipment must go back after all - Arnie's expectation of the younger players handing back their newly acquired hockey equipment is laughed at, after all, a deal is a deal! There's a shock though when the lads go to the box where the pristine new equipment was stored - it has gone! Dill turns up at Chris's house, where there's a celebration in progress for his baby sister's Naming. Judi is out with Wayne when a masked cyclist cuts through them - she is momentarily startled, and wants to go somewhere safe - Wayne won't go to her house, so he reluctantly takes her back to his busy house. His bedroom's not empty though - to his annoyance, his older brother is in residence up there. Wayne's brother is far from friendly to Judi, and nasty towards Wayne. When he leaves, Judi wonders why Wayne puts up with it - he responds bitterly that he can't win - she doesn't like him aggressively protecting her, and she doesn't like him being weak in front of his brother. Fed up with the arguing, Judi walks home in the dark: she hears footsteps behind her and starts to run. She reaches a fence and turns - it's just Alec, who offers to walk her home. In the kitchen of the Longsworth house, Dill asks a key question - does Chris really love Laurie? His reply is to kiss her. Round the front of the house, Laurie is getting no reply from the doorbell, as the singing in the front room drowns out the sound. Finally, Chris notices the bell and answers the door: it's Laurie, ready for them to go out. Flustered he just manages to prevent her from going inside the house and seeing Dill. They leave, and in the kitchen Dill is left on her own...

Episode 13
Wayne's finally had enough when he finds out Alec walked Judi home, and punches him in the playground: a fight erupts, but is quickly stopped by Judi and Sarah-Jane. A fight is arranged for after school. Alec patches himself up in the loos, while Sean assures Alec he's going to see to Wayne. Alec replies "look what happened to Judi," and Sean suddenly pushes Alec back, threatening him with a knife. Sean tells him to watch what he says. Alec turns the tables - he's much stronger - and it's Sean being threatened. Mr. Brisley enters the toilets and brings the issue to an end. In the library, Judi warns Wayne not to go ahead with the fight. Italian Year Seven boy Franco complains about the awful spaghetti in school dinners: a contest is proposed between the school chef and Franco to see who can produce the best meal. While Laurie is searching for Dill, Chris is in the school grounds with Dill. Dill stops Chris, saying she can't do it, perhaps conscious of Laurie's trust being betrayed. Sarah-Jane tells Wayne that he ought to support Judi, and stop the aggressive stance he has towards Alec, especially when it is clear to her that Judi doesn't even remotely like Alec. After school, for a moment it seems all the advice to Wayne has fallen on deaf ears, but after staring at Alec for a few moments, Wayne walks off. The Double Dare gang try "psychological profiling" to work out who took the new hockey gear - but they find opening the box without a key takes far too long, and give up. As they leave, Cracker cuts his hand with the screwdriver, then notices a tiny skull on the ground. Dennis comes to school in his wheelchair - he has some news for Dudley: he's received a letter setting the date for the court case that will settle his compensation claim. Talking about the accident brings the horrendous memory of the incident back. In the canteen kitchen, Franco and the school chef begin their challenge. After the "Spag Bol" is prepared, there's a taste test. The vote is counted, and Mr. Urdy announces that Mr. Andrews has won by a clear margin - Franco walks off, depressed. Afterwards, his classmates tell him that his meal had too thick a sauce and "black bits" (olives, Franco explains) - he calls them Philistines disgustedly. The Double Dare Gang discuss tactics in finding the thief who stole the hockey equipment. Cracker is adamant that the skull is a major clue, while Gemma gives them all a list of suspects, and suggests they need to each start tailing a suspect. In the library, Gemma and Matt overhear Chris and Dill talking in low tones to each other. Dill mentions about the others finding out, and Gemma and Matt smile at each other, convinced they have found the thieves. Alec and Sean have been watching the Year 8's, and seem concerned about their activities. When Matt heads off to the loos, Sean and Alec follow, and inside, Alec bashes the cubicle door open. "Hello Matty," he says...

Episode 14
Matt is cornered in the toilets... Alec and Sean insist on a "joke" being played on Wayne - a little silver packet to be planted inside Wayne's jacket. With Sarah-Jane's support, Judi removes the dressing from her face: her jagged scar is highly visible. Some other girls come into the loos - their shock is all to apparent - Judi replaces the bandages, her nerve lost. Outside, Sarah-Jane persuades her she's pretty regardless of her scar, and once again Judi removes the dressing. To her surprise, Wayne refuses her suggestion of doing something - has he gone off her, she wonders. She need not worry - he's just got an evening job in a supermarket to earn money for the skiing trip. Chris fends off Laurie's idea of them spending the evening together, and instead he and Dill sit in the Church. He tells her that he can talk to her better than he can to Laurie, and gives her a silver necklace. The next day, everyone admires the necklace, but Chris's story about where he was the previous evening when Laurie phoned doesn't seem to ring true. It's time for Dennis's trial to settle his compensation claim, and he is at court. Lucy is also there to give evidence, and so is Claire, who wants to study Law. Dudley calls him on the mobile phone he's lent him for the day, but Dennis hangs up, annoyed at being called before anything has even happened. Alec and Sean lay more pressure on Matt to plant their item on Wayne after an unsuccessful attempt the previous day. In the courtroom, Lucy is asked some uncomfortable questions about her relationship with Dennis, the prosecution implying that there could have been an emotional upset that might have affected his concentration. Then it is Dennis's turn to be questioned. He's asked if he did in fact still have the Walkman earphones in place at the time of the accident, something which he's already denied. Prosecution tries to insist that Dennis was in a hurry to get to school, and upset at Lucy's relationship with Josh. Mr. Robson asks Carlene if she could visit St. Mary's Junior School to talk about their bullying counseling. She suggests Wayne would be a better choice. Meanwhile, Matt finds Wayne in the bullying counseling room with his head down. Matt creeps up to Wayne, and plants the packet on his person. Wayne wakes up and assumes he's here for bullying counseling. Matt makes out that he's changed his mind - he says his name is Cracker, and leaves. At the courtroom, Dennis receives a note, offering him an out-of-court settlement. He reels in shock at the amount - half a million pounds. At hockey practice, Laurie carelessly swipes Dill - Chris tells her to be more careful, but there's a cold, calculating look in her eyes now. Laurie walks home with Chris, and then leaves him at his house and goes to think at the pond. When she's gone, Dill appears from behind the bins, but trips and messes up her blouse. Chris takes her inside for her to change her shirt. Just as she's undressing, Chris's father enters his room, jumping to the wrong conclusion - she rushes out of the house, her blouse undone. Chris races after her, and nearby, Laurie watches the scene...

Episode 15
Chris runs after Dill as she leaves his house, and Laurie watches with a grim expression on her face. She rings the doorbell, and makes an excuse to go up to Chris's bedroom. When Chris comes back after seeing Dill escape on a bus, he finds Laurie trashing his bedroom, graffiti written on the walls. The next day, Dennis's friends are full of the news of his compensation money - will he spend the half a million on a flash car? The Double Dare Gang seem to be at a loss to pursue their lost hockey equipment, but Cracker has an ace up his sleeve - a huge bunch of keys that he reckons can open all the lockers. Sean and Alec warn Matt that today's his last chance for planting the "little packet" on Wayne. When he's alone, he looks in it - it's white powder in a small bag. In the playground, he bumps into Wayne using the opportunity to slip the bag into the older boy's pocket. Colin tries to remonstrate with Chris because he knows about Chris and Dill - as Arnie's friend, it pains him that Arnie is innocent of the affair. He shows Arnie the note that he accidentally intercepted in the café - "Laurie knows about us", it says in Dill's handwriting. Arnie grows angry, runs off and meets Laurie who confirms the truth. As Chris tells Dill that Laurie knows, suddenly Arnie appears in the classroom and punches Chris, then kicks him in the stomach while he's on the floor. Chris returns blows while Dill begs them to stop, and then Mrs. Holmes comes in and brings the fight to an end. The Double Dare gang realize they are getting nowhere with the bunch of keys, but then Lisa has a bright idea - the hockey equipment would have been sold to hockey players, so if they go to the hockey match after school, they might find who's using the stolen equipment. Clare finds Dennis in the gym, in a badly depressed mood. She tries to make him think positively - make the wheelchair work for him, rather than against him. Chris, his face badly bloodied, and Arnie, slightly less the worse for wear, are called before Mr. Robson to explain themselves. They say nothing, and are given a warning that they will be suspended for further fighting. Laurie puts up a message on the board: "Dill is a two-timing slag". Dill arrives, sees the message, and leaves. Wayne goes with Mr. Robson to speak to St. Mary's Primary School about bullying. His speech goes down well, but as he leaves, the silver packet falls out of his jacket, and one of the kids notices and hands it into her teacher. Mr. Robson is called to the primary school's headmaster's office, profoundly embarrassed at the presence of drugs on Wayne. Back at Grange Hill, a puzzled Wayne is taken to Mr. Robson's office, and Mrs. Holmes called in. The Head reveals the drugs, and tells Wayne he is excluded pending an inquiry - Wayne protests his innocence. Sean and Alec note with delight that Wayne is being escorted off the premises: they give Matt a pat on the back, while he looks on horrified. Judi and Sarah-Jane call Wayne to help, but he has to go - the police are knocking on the door... In the Common Room, Dennis seems much changed - he enthusiastically tells his mates that he is going on a trip across Australia, one especially designed for wheelchairs. It's time for the hockey match, although the "Hill Hogs" are suffering a bit on numbers, with Laurie refusing to play, and tension between Chris and Arnie at an all-time high, causing points to be lost. In the break, Colin tries to get some sense into Arnie and Chris - they need to play as a team if they have any chance of winning...

Episode 16
In the hockey match, half time is an opportunity for the Hill Hogs to agree to forget their differences and fight as a team. Things are looking up for the Double Dare gang when Tom notices that one of the opposition team's helmets is one of the stolen items. Then Arnie and Chris's tempers flare up again, and Arnie walks off in a rage. Dennis goes to see "Equal Footing" about his planned adventure trip to Australia. He sees a busy office of able bodied people and almost gives up, but then one of the organizers, herself wheelchair-bound, calls him over. She gives him encouragement, but he must build up his muscles to be fit enough to pass their admission test. Wayne is getting a grilling from the police over the drugs found in his pocket. At school, Sean gives Judi some rather hollow sympathy about Wayne, but she dismisses the idea that Wayne would take drugs. When Wayne returns home, he sits in Ray's café, reminiscing about Judi, and the night she was attacked. At the school gates (he is excluded), he waits for Judi, and when she spots him, he tells her he's certain it was Sean who planted the drugs. She says she will help, if he'll stay out of trouble: later she asks Alec to meet her after school at the café. The Double Dare Gang finally get to talk to the elusive Colin about the hockey gear, and ask him to help. They want to speak to the other school to find out who they bought the dodgy hockey gear from. He refuses, but Gemma doesn't give up so easily: she butters him up, praising his maturity. In the Sixth Form Common Room, Lucy tells Claire that she's raising Dennis's hopes only to have them dashed. Alec arrives at the café and sits down with Judi: but then Wayne pulls up a chair too. Wayne tries to get Alec to admit to planting the drugs, and to attacking Judi, but the plan fails, and Alec leaves without any satisfactory answers. When he's gone, Wayne explains to Judi that he's realized that when she was attacked it was himself they were expecting to find, but Judi was borrowing his jacket at the time. Judi has a message to go to the secretary's office, and while she is there she notices the CCTV monitors. While Mrs. Maguire's back is turned, she grabs the CCTV video tape for the day that Wayne was found with drugs on his person. With Colin's help, the Double Dare Gang work out that it's Gregory who's selling the stolen hockey gear, and they follow him to his hideout, a wooden shack which they see him lock up. To everyone's surprise, Cracker's jumbo ring of keys proves successful in gaining entry. They find the hockey equipment, but have to hide when they see Gregory returning. When he enters, they emerge, and dress him up in all the stolen hockey equipment. Judi watches the CCTV tape in the school's media room, while Mr. Urdy marks some books. In the playground, the overburdened Gregory falls over, while Tom, Matt, Lisa and Cracker circle him with the hockey sticks. It's not long before Mr. Robson investigates: "No chance of a reward?" asks Cracker, but the only reply from the Head is a grimace. In the Media room, Judi watches the video footage carefully, and finds the point where Matt is planting the drugs package on Wayne. She rewinds, and watches again, but she's not alone now in the room - Mr. Urdy has left, but Sean stands, watching her from a distance...

Episode 17
Judi spots the moment on the CCTV video where drugs were planted on Wayne, but as she leaves, she encounters Sean who was watching her. Not realizing Dean's involvement, she confides in him about finding the culprit. He tries to talk her out of showing the video to anyone, but she's not having any of it. The next morning, Judi waits for the boy in the CCTV footage to show up, but Sean's already intercepting Matthew. Sean warns Matthew to lie low, and deny any involvement. When he reaches the school gates, Sean's had to leave on an errand for Mr. Brisley and the way is clear for Judi to confront Matthew. She explains about the tapes, and arranges to meet the boy at break. Matt seeks out Sean, but Sean's solution is radical and backed up by his knife - Matthew is to hide in the toilets every break time, out of sight of Judi. Sean pretends Judi has a message to phone home, so he is able to get at her bag, and the video tape inside. He swaps the tape for another in his absence. After school, Matt manages to escape Judi before she can grab him. Judi and Wayne go up to Mr. Robson's office with what they imagine is the CCTV tape. At their house, a depressed Arnie tells his sister about the break up with Dill, and to cheer him up, she pays for a video to be rented. At Gemma's house, her friends meet her black mouse. Her claims that it's very nippy meet with scorn from Cracker, who claims his own mouse "Linford" to be faster. They agree to a race, but their enthusiasm is clouded by worries about the moody, and absent, Matt. Meanwhile at the Arnold house, Dill has bravely knocked on the door, but finds an unfriendly Jessica there. When Arnie eventually arrives he is very rude to her, and she leaves - his father is outraged at his behaviour. In the Media room, Judi confidently puts the video tape into the machine, but then to her and Wayne's horror, a kids programme starts playing back. Mr. Robson just imagines they are playing the fool, and summarily ejects them. In the café, Wayne and Judi puzzle angrily over the changed tape. Then, Wayne realizes they know Matt's full name, and can look him up in the phone book. They aren't the only ones seeking poor Matt - Gemma rings his doorbell, worried about his absence. His mother leaves them alone while she goes out. While Gemma is there, Judi calls his number, having tried all the other "Singletons" - Matt answers and hangs up straight away. They decide enough is enough, and go round to his house. Wayne bangs furiously on the door, while Matthew frets on the other side...

Episode 18
Matt refuses to answer the door to Wayne's frantic knocking, and then there's the sound of sirens as a police car approaches... The next day Gemma accompanies Matt to school, with her black mouse ready for a race against Cracker's own rodent. Alec's growing tired of Sean's implication that they are both in trouble up to their necks. Wayne's in school, against his expulsion, but determined to clear his name. Matt cowers outside, determined to avoid both Sean and Wayne. Gemma persuades him to go inside, and she'll say he's off sick. Cracker tells Gemma that he and Tom have set up a race track for the race - if she's not too scared. "Put your money where your mouse is," he jokes. Judi puts two and two together, and confronts Sean about the switched video tape. Sean sees Matt in the corridor, dispelling Gemma's myth that he's off sick, and in the loos tells Matt that the whole matter's sorted but he's to keep quiet. However waiting behind a door is Wayne who's overheard the conversation. While he has a go at Matt, shaking him violently - Judi steps in, and stops him. Her gentle words persuade him to go with her to Mr. Robson. In the middle of a French test, Sean sees the two walking together outside, and his horror grows. Mr. Robson gets to the root of the issue - he doubts that Matt is telling the truth, but then the boy suddenly reveals that Sean's got a knife which he uses to threaten him with. Mr. Robson asks for the police to be called, and gets Mr. Brisley to round up Sean and Alec, warning him that Sean may be carrying a knife. While Mrs. Holmes is out of the room, the two mice go missing. Sean makes a run for it, but the gates are closed, and Wayne is in hot pursuit. Staff, and Judi, watch on the CCTV as Wayne pulls Sean back, and police sirens are heard. Sean produces a knife, and expresses his bitterness that Judi was knifed rather than Wayne. Sean heads back inside, as police enter the school grounds. He whizzes past Alec, who's firmly in the grip of Mr. Brisley. Meanwhile, in Mrs. Holmes Year Eight class, everyone watches in alarm as the two escaped mice crawl around near the teacher's feet. Mr. Robson, in search of Sean hears a scream come from the English class - but it's only Mrs. Holmes discovering MySpice and Linford on her person. "The school is infested," she cries. Wayne finds Sean behind the stage, set for Julius Ceasar, and holds his enemy in an arm-lock while Judi enters. Wayne tells her to remove the knife from Sean's pocket, and explains that it was Sean who cut her face. Judi takes the knife, but drops it in disgust, then the tables are turned, Sean holding the knife against Wayne and Judi. A policeman enters, and advises Sean to drop the knife - he does so, and it's all over for Sean. In the aftermath of the mouse incident, Tom and Cracker have lost faith in Cracker's mouse, and suggest using the school gerbil instead. Tom's not too impressed with the gerbil's replacement - a white sock hidden among the straw. Unfortunately in their enthusiasm, they leave the gerbil behind in the laboratory sink, where it is discovered by Mrs. Holmes who becomes even more convinced there are vermin on the loose! In the police station, Sean protests his innocence and points the finger at Alec - in response Alec punches Sean. Wayne is escorted back to class by Mr. Robson, who makes a public apology to those present. In the interview room, it doesn't take much for Alec to be persuaded to admit that Sean was the one who slashed Judi's face. When Sean is interviewed, it is made clear to him that he won't be going home any time soon. After school, Matt nervously plants a kiss on Gemma's kiss, and gives her a necklace, in gratitude for her support and help. Wayne meets Judi, and tells her it's over, the charges against him dropped. It's far from over for Sean, alone in a cell: his tough veneer crumples as he breaks down in tears...

Episode 19
Final preparations are underway for the skiing trip, with workouts in the gym taking place and a trip to an artificial slope. Things are still unpleasant though between Chris, Laurie, Dill and Arnie. Judi is approached by youths in the playground who want to scare her with a knife: she grabs it and runs off. She rushes into the Head's office and places the weapon on his desk, upset that nothing seems to be being done about the ownership of knives. As she leaves, and bumps into the secretary, her anger turns to tears. Cracker and Tom have come to the conclusion that there's money to be made in mouse racing. Dennis persuades Lucy to go horse-riding, but he's got another reason for asking her along. To her astonishment, he tells her that he's bought her "Blue Heaven", her favourite horse. She calls him stupid, and canters off. When he catches up with her at the stables, she explains there's no way she can accept a present like that from him. In the pet shop, to Tom's astonishment, Cracker buys all the mice, unable to get answer from the shop owner as to which mice are the quickest. In the evening, Dennis's Sixth Form Friends wait outside the café for the mystery tour he's arranged. They wonder if he's going to turn up at all, then an enormous stretch limo pulls up and they pile in and head off to a nightclub. When they are alone Dennis asks Lucy the question that's been on his mind - will she go out to Australia with him? She tells him that what they had is long in the past. Dennis is left alone, drinking from a huge bottle: Claire and Dudley watch him with concern. Kevin is looking forward to the skiing trip - he practises his French chatting up technique in front of the mirror, until his mother catches him at it. Mr. Robson holds a special assembly, spelling out that carrying knives is unacceptable, and illegal. At Kevin's house, his mother is horrified to find Kevin's passport on the table. When she visits school to hand in the passport, she learns that they need an adult to supervise, and volunteers herself. When Claire and Rachel learn that hangover-stricken Dennis has opted out of his interview, they take matters into their own hands, and arrange for Carol from "Equal Footing" to visit the café, and meet with him. She tells him he could still make another interview, but he's got to drop the self-pity - it's up to him...

Episode 20
Cracker reveals his clever racing track, constructed with the (unwitting) help of Mr. Hankin. Dennis looks around the Sixth Form Common Room - it might be the last time I'll be here, he says, as it's the day of his rearranged interview. Kevin is puzzled to hear his mother's turned up at school - he's still not been told that she's going to be one of the supervisors on the skiing trip. Tom and Matt give out special mouse passes for the forthcoming mouse racing tournament. In London, Dennis finds his taxi stuck in traffic, and following the cabbie's advice, speeds out under his own steam. The mouse racing gets underway, but the crowd of enthusiasts running to the out of bound games hut is noticed by Mr. Robson on the CCTV and the tournament comes to an early end. Dennis has his interview for the job in Australia. Kevin finds some of his mother's ski equipment and finally learns that she is going on the trip too. At night, Dudley takes Dennis out - he tells him they are going to a casino, but then makes an excuse to go back to Grange Hill. Dennis takes the opportunity for a last look around school. Walking round the school, Dudley reminisces with Dennis about the good times they had - the lonely hearts business, hiding in the gym... Suddenly, Dudley gives Dennis's wheelchair a push into the darkened hall. The lights come on and "surprise!" is shouted. Inside, a surprise ball has been prepared, with all the Sixth Form dressed up and music playing. A banner proclaims "Nice One Dennis, from the class of 1998." There's a few surprise guests from the past - Gerald, who's brought his girlfriend, and Joanna - who picks an orange juice from the tray of drinks. While the party continues, the trip to France is beginning, with the coach arriving at school. There's one final surprise guest for Dennis - Josh arrives and tells of the business he is setting up. Then he spills his wine over Mrs. Holmes, and Nathan drops his ice bucket in Mr. Robson's lap. Back at the coach, there's just a few stragglers yet to turn up - Colin arrives with Laurie, but Chris wants a word with her first. She's in no mood to hear his apology, however heartfelt. Kevin's the last to arrive, although his mother's on board, incognito. Finally Kevin's taxi comes, and he boards the coach. To his humiliation, a childish hot water bottle (packed by his mum) falls out his holdall. In the hall, Dennis, wearing a hat with corks strung around the edge, tells everyone that he didn't get the job - but he is going as a trainee, at his own expense. The coach gets ready to depart. From inside, Dill waves sadly to Arnie, who opted to stay home. Laurie turns around from her seat, and Dill nods to her one-time friend - Laurie smiles back. A girl next to Kevin tells him, "A hot water bottle is the last thing you'll need in France". A few seats back, his mother hears the comment with mounting alarm. At the party, Dennis makes a final speech - "It's time to get on with my life," he says, and the balloons are dropped...
