Episode 1

Episode #14.1

Second Former Brian thinks their new teacher is speaking double dutch - but he is half right - he is Mr. Van Der Groot from the Netherlands. Chrissy and Ted have spent a lot of the summer together, and they are reluctant to go back. The school is freezing cold - but the caretaker can't yet put the heating on. Mrs. McClusky insists that Mr. Griffiths starts it up. The Fourth Form find that their new art teacher is a Mrs. Farrington - they wonder if Miss Booth was sacked. Then "Miss Booth" walks in... She is furious with the Deputy Head to find that he's assumed that she will take her new married name, when she wants to retain her old moniker. Mr. Hargreaves has a cunning plan to pay for the extra heating bill that seems likely to be incurred - putting up adverts around the school. Calley's finally due to hear the results of all the tests that have been made following the scratch she incurred from a monkey that may have had the HIV virus. Tegs thinks his dad is about to uproot the household to Germany. Nick and Richard con Barry Timpson into buying a piece of rock which is supposed to be from the Berlin Wall. As Mr. Griffiths turns on the heating, and water starts coursing through the badly maintained system, Alice and Becky, staying warm in a secret hidey hole, knock over a plank, and a ball-cock is released, starting a flood. Alice and Becky get Julie to be the watch while they do something in secret in the loos - when Julie goes to look, she finds they have disappeared. Mrs. Monroe finds that her Shakespeare lines of it "always raining" has materialized into fact - water is dripping through the ceiling! The ceiling bulges, and the class make a hasty retreat to the door. At that moment, Mr. Hargreaves makes an entry, investigates the effect, and gets swamped by the resulting deluge of his ill-advised prod into the plasterwork. The school is evacuated, and when Alice and Becky emerge to blend in with the others, they are astonished to find an empty building.

Episode #14.2

Ms Booth starts the day with a one mile run up a hill. Tegs is asked by his foster parents about the idea of going to Germany, but he's not keen on losing his friends. On "Car Day" Richard boasts about his custom made radio controlled car, but Tegs doesn't believe him. When he takes Matthew and Tegs to his locker, it's missing, but Tegs never thought it was there in the first place. Meanwhile, outside, a race of the cars is planned - and Neil Timpson has "acquired" an impressive model. Richard hears about the race outside, the race participants scatter, and Richard finds his car on the playground, abandoned. Trevor's work experience at a travel agent starts, but he has already made an enemy of one of the girls who works there. Mr Hargreaves tells the Fourth Form about the advertising design idea, but Chrissy voices the opinion that if the school are going to be paid, then so should they, for their design work. At the Estate Agents, Trevor is briefly left alone, and a client comes in urgent need of a booking. It seems to go well - but Trev hasn't checked the credit card against the list of fraudulent cards. It turns out to be okay, but his boss is not pleased. There's general consensus that the school dinners are very skimpy - an outside caterers are handling the arrangements. Thin Alice is nominated for a special role by her friends, and they wipe her face with dirt and mess up her appearance. She cheekily asks for "more" in an Oliver Twist manner! Episode #14.3

Mr. Griffiths is horrified to find that the school's bottle recycling is going to be open to members of the public. Jacko's gang plan to go and watch Mike run up in Edinburgh. Alice and Becky get Julie Corrigan to look after their bags, and then do their disappearing trick - through a secret door in the toilets into a crawl space behind the wall. As a protest, the second formers are deliberately slow in the canteen queue - and then Akik wants to pay for his dinner in all pennies! Mr. Robson agrees that Georgina can go to Edinburgh - but to her annoyance, the school won't pay for her ticket. Alice and Becky go exploring in the crawlspace and find themselves about the Head's office. Lifting up a ceiling tile, they hear Mrs. McClusky say that if the canteen protests worsen then they will have to take some action. They spread the word that they want a large-scale protest the next day in the canteen. Jacko and Brian are rather unsuccessful in their aim to get stuff for their expedition to Edinburgh - getting the wrong types of map books, and the wrong types of compasses (the sort you need for geometry!) - but they are put to shame by Locko, who has sold his remote-controlled car to get funds. Mrs Monroe gets her class to start collecting and sorting paper for recycling - but it turns out to be a harder and messier job than they imagined. Richard has been telling Matthew about the smuggling he's seen from the vantage of his tree house. Tegs doesn't believe a word of it though. A peaceful protest is held in the canteen - with no-one ordering food - but Trevor and Ted go off for a pizza instead. He makes friends with the restaurant owners, and finds out they come from Halifax. Meanwhile, back at school, Mrs. McClusky visits the canteen and hears the grievances of the protesters. She has a meeting with the head of catering - and an increase in portions is agreed - to the delight of Becky and Alice listening from their hidey-hole above. Georgina falls out with Calley - Georgina moans about how Mike's training gets in the way of their relationship, but Calley thinks she should just be grateful she has him. Up in Richard's tree-house, Matthew and Nick see the "Smugglers" coming in to their neighbour's back garden. They watch as two suspicious men put boxes away into the garden shed...

Episode 4

Episode #14.4

Georgina kisses the preoccupied Mike goodbye as he gets on the train to Edinburgh - she is put out that he assumes she will wait in for his phone call. On the pretence of going fishing, Jacko's gang head off for their trip North, but the train ticket costs a lot more than they expected - and in any case they are at the wrong station. They opt for a cheaper alternative - preferably free if they can stay hidden - a coach. They get in one, but as they hide, the driver changes the destination sign to "Bristol". When Chrissy tells Natalie about the party she is going to, Natalie assumes she will be going alone, and in turn invites Justine, persuading her that she can go with Tegs. Chrissy though isn't too pleased with that idea, as they all have to appear older, and Tegs is hardly convincing as an eighteen year old. Jacko and his mates disembark from the coach when they realize they are going West, and mooch around. To their surprise they bump into Mr. Mackenzie at a petrol station on his way up North. He notices that Brian does not look very well. He's not willing for them to tag along, especially as he is merely driving to the airport. Calley finally agrees to go to the party with Georgina, but seems determined not to have a good time. Ted and Trevor turn up, but Chrissy avoids Ted, thinking that he'd want to be with girls his own age. As they dance, he tells her that he wants to go out with her properly. Tegs turns up, but he can't get past the bouncer. Georgina dances with Don, another athlete from Grange Hill, while Trevor, his self-confidence boosted by alcohol, fails to get Natalie to partner him, or anyone else for that matter. While Georgina dances at a flat in London, up in Scotland, her boyfriend Mike fumes as his phone call goes unanswered. Justine finds her dancing partner a little too forward, and goes outside - there she meets a miserable Tegs. He tells her that he is moving to Germany with his family. He walks away despondently but she goes after him and they walk off together....

Trevor and Ted are told by Mr. Hargreaves to take the advertising competition winners to be framed by Mr. Mackenzie. Trevor notices that one of the entries that didn't win was by Chrissie and tries to get more clues about Ted's relationship, but he is keeping mum. Episode #14.6

Brian's in hospital, and it looks to be a long stay. Mrs Monroe bikes into school, with a tune she can't get out of her head. Calley sits in the library with a permanent headache. Mike asks for her advice about whether he should tell Georgina about the chance he might have of an American scholarship. She accidentally lets slip about Don Jenkins, who Georgina met at the party, leaving no doubt in Mike's mind as to why Georgina didn't wait in for his phone call when he was in Edinburgh. In the Physics lesson, Julie finds she is unwanted, and is teased by Alice and Becky. The canteen still seems to be having problems supplying the meals that are wanted, and it is an opportune time for Trevor and his new pizza selling scheme. They start selling take-away pizzas - but the boxes are unlabelled, and the operation begins in a chaotic manner. Trevor's makeshift table is the top of the bottle bank - which conspires against him when a stack of pizzas slides into the bottle bank's hole. Back in the canteen, Julie Corrigan continues to be harassed by Alice and Becky. In the 6th Form Common Room, Mike confronts Georgina about Don. Calley interrupts their arguments, in pain from her migraine. In the staffroom, Mrs. Monroe spreads the virus of the catchy tune she is trying to work out the title of, and eventually susses that it is "Hey Jude". Mrs. Shaw comes in to see Mrs. McClusky, and breaks the news that Brian has Leukaemia. In the afternoon, Mr. Griffiths and Mr. Hargreaves find the framed advertisements have been vandalized, and Mr. Hargreaves has a strong suspicion about who it might have been - Chrissy Mainwaring is summoned. No evidence is found, and she demands an apology. In Mrs Monroe's class, Alice takes Julie's rough book when she's not looking. Julie responds by feebly attacking Alice, but then Mrs. Monroe enters. Julie tells on Alice, who admits to nothing, and Mrs. Monroe unsympathetically tells Julie that she's got to learn to stand on her own two feet. After school, Akik seems to be the last person who will actually talk to her, until Alice pushes him off, leaving her alone. Mike tells Georgina that he loves her, but she suggests that he loves sport more. Natalie tells Chrissy that she can't go on their agreed trip to see Mr. Van Der Groot in his new flat, and to Nat's annoyance Chrissy says that she will go alone. Ted and Trevor aren't having an easy time delivering pizzas with just the one bike - especially when they drop a stack of them. Ted gives up and walks off. Mr. Van Der Groot seems a little nervous that Chrissy is helping him decorate on her own, but soon Ted turns up outside and she leaves. They have nowhere to go, and kiss passionately in the street...

Episode #14.7

Akik's expensive remote-controlled car gets the attention of the Timpson brothers. There is outrage when it is announced that a rental fee is required to use school lockers. Mrs. Monroe explains about Brian's leukaemia to his shocked classmates. Julie, more isolated than ever, bunks off school, but is advised to return by a passing policewoman. Mr. Hargreaves makes Georgina "Head Girl". As Akik prepares to race his car in the playground races organized by Mr. Hankin, he opens his bag to find it has gone. Jacko and Locko sort out Brian's locker, and find his racing car inside: they plan to take it to him in hospital to cheer him up. Mr. Hargreaves is distressed by Mrs. McClusky's idea to put HIV awareness posters around the school - he thinks it will affect the advertising. While the press are called in to see the artwork/advertising, someone is replacing the ad for the local sweet shop with another piece that promises all the "fillings you've ever dreamed of!" As the proprietor of the shop stands next to the "advert" for a press photo, Mr. Hargreaves suddenly notices the picture has been changed. Once again, Chrissy is blamed. Mrs. Monroe learns about the loss of Akik's expensive car, and announces they will do a search of the school - Neil Timpson fakes being sick so he can quickly retrieve it from his locker. He takes it outside, uses it in the playground, but it gets squashed by a truck that happens to be leaving. He then has the cheek to return it in a carrier bag for the reward they agreed. At the hospital, Jacko and Locko show Brian the car they have brought, but the ward sister is not too happy to find it running in the corridor. Mr. Robson collects Mike on his motorbike to take him for some practice on the running track, but the bike swerves to avoid a car, and they both tumble off. Mr. Robson gets up easily, but Mike is lying on the road unconscious....

Episode #14.8

After the accident, Mike is rushed to hospital in an ambulance and spends the night there. The next morning his dad, and Mr. Robson turn up to accompany him home. At school, Alice tricks Akik into giving her his soft drink bottle, and then runs off to the girls' toilets. As he waits for her, she taunts him by appearing in the corridor at some distance away - he is determined to find out her secret. In Art, Natalie asks Chrissy how she got on with Mr. Van Der Groot, and she gets annoyed, ruins her painting and storms off. Nat follows her, but Chrissy won't come out and talk. Curiosity finally gets the better of Akik, and to Dominic's astonishment, he brazenly walks into the ladies', just in time to see Alice come out of secret wall. Cecile (the US athletics scout) gives Mike a visa application - Georgina sees this, and crossly marches off, thinking he's already decided to leave the country, and her... Alice and Becky agree to let Akik and Dominic come with them into the crawl space, thinking it better than the word spreading. Still crying in the toilets, Chrissy finally reveals to Fran why she's upset - she is pregnant, and hasn't told anyone yet. Unfortunately, they aren't as alone as they think - the four second formers are listening in the crawl space above them. Matthew is keen to find out more about the smuggling operation that he witnessed with Richard and Nick, and they agree to investigate further. Fran tells Natalie about Chrissy's pregnancy, and they try to convince her that she needs to tell someone so she can get proper advice. In the playground, Alice works out that it was Chrissy she heard admitting to being pregnant. Chrissy heads off to Ms Booth's house for advice, while Georgina goes round to Mike's house. Georgina comes to the conclusion that Mike has already made his mind up to go to the US. Up in the tree-house, Matthew watches with Nick and Richard for any smuggling activity in the neighbour's house. Under the cover of darkness they watch the gang take a box into their shed, and then bring out a different one. Ms Booth advises Chrissy that she needs to tell her mother, and see a doctor. Chrissy is adamant that she won't reveal the father's identity. As a touch of irony, Ted turns up at that moment to deliver a takeaway ordered by Ms. Booth's husband, blissfully unaware of the proceedings inside...

Episode #14.9

Julie Corrigan's mother forces her reluctant daughter to go to school. She arrives with a sick note, but is met by Alice at the gates, who promptly tears it up. Mrs. McClusky tries to squeeze money out of Mr. Hargreaves's advertising revenue to help pay for a forthcoming trip to Russia. Nick and Richard find out that the expected money for the trip isn't available, and that Matthew is one of those who would be unable to go without financial support. They decide to hack into the Deputy Head's computer to see what the real state of school finances really is. Alice starts spreading a rumour about Chrissy's pregnancy, saying that Mr. Van Der Groot is the father, because she's been seen going round to his flat. Justine overhears the conversation, and confronts Chrissy, who denies it. Justine pulls Fran out of her lesson (on the pretence of her needing to speak to Mrs. McClusky) and the three try to work out how the pregnancy has become common knowledge, and who started saying it was Mr. Van Der Groot. After Fran leaves, Chrissy tells Justine that she's going to a special clinic to have her pregnancy confirmed. Richard logs on to Mr. Hargreaves computer, but can't find the advertising money accounted for. Believing that the Deputy Head has done some rather creative accounting, he eventually finds it under the refurbishing accounts, and just manages to pull a name "O' Hanlon" off the computer, before Matthew warns him that the deputy head is approaching. In the canteen, Justine and Natalie are a little too loud in their discussion about Nat's sister Becky being the one who spread the rumour - and Mr. Mackenzie overhears their conversation. Discussing what they see as an unjust use of the advertising revenue, Richard suggests they use another computer, since all school machines are networked together. Matthew fakes an illness in the receptionist's area, so Nick and Richard can access the computer in there. Richard starts the printout going, but it's too slow, and the receptionist returns before he can collect it. It's Trevor who finally breaks the distorted news to Ted about Chrissy, telling him that she's pregnant, and the Dutch teacher is the father. Back at the receptionist's area, Mrs. McClusky finds the printout, and takes it, immediately realizing its significance. She calls in Mr. Van Der Groot, and asks him to elaborate what's been happening with the Fourth Form girls. He protests innocence, pointing out that Chrissy's boyfriend appeared after she had been helping with the decorating. Unsupervised in their classroom, Alice and Robyn offer a rather doubtful olive branch of peace to Julie - they will be friends with her, but only if she passes the test of jumping in the swimming pool with all her clothes on. To their astonishment, she determinedly sets off. She arrives at the pool, with Mr. Robson taking a class there, and to everyone's astonishment she takes the plunge, to the bewilderment of the teacher, and the merriment of the occupants of the pool. In the Head's office, Mrs. McClusky has it out with Mr. Hargreaves over the fraudulent use of the advertising money. At the end of the school day, Ted finally manages to get a word with Chrissy, who's not happy that he believes that the Dutch teacher could have gotten her pregnant, and she storms off...

Episode #14.10

Julie Corrigan finds that her jump into the swimming pool hasn't made her any more popular - quite the reverse, as Becky's put the idea around that it's Julie who started the rumour about Chrissy's affair with Mr. Van Der Groot. Chrissy turns up to school late - she tells Ms Booth that her pregnancy test was false. Finding Ted no help at all, Trevor is forced to hand control of the pizza business over to Jacko's gang. Mr. Robson proposes a cheaper replacement trip - to Dartmoor, instead of Russia. In the afternoon registration, Mrs Monroe finds a lot of absentees - including Julie Corrigan. Out in the playground, Jacko is finishing up the pizza sales for the day, watched by Neil Timpson and his cronies, who plan to swoop in to take the profits. Unfortunately, Mr. Hargreaves appears at a crucial moment, and blaming Timpson for the mess, gets his lot to clear it up. After school, Trevor appears with a specially modified bike - thanks to Mr. Mackenzie's help, but Ted is in a world of his own. At home, Becky speaks to Robyn on the phone - apparently, Julie has not returned home, and Robyn fears they may have pushed her into running away. Richard, Nick and Matthew plan a night time operation to catch the smugglers with the idea of Nick distracting the men while the other two gain entrance to the mysterious shed. At Mr. Van Der Groot's house, where Mrs. Monroe has been invited around for dinner, Natalie rings the doorbell. She breaks the news that Julie has gone missing. At Richard's house, the three lads finally see what they have been waiting for, and a van turns up at the neighbour's house. Unfortunately, their elaborate alarms don't work, and Matthew only has barely enough time to hide near the shed, overhearing the "smugglers" talk about wanting to make "real money". Meanwhile, out on the dark streets, Julie is wandering around and gets accosted by a drunk. Finally, she is picked up by the police...

Episode #14.11

The new arrangements for the school cleaning using outside contractors has caused the place to become noticeably dirtier. Mr. Hargreaves suggests paying the sixth formers some money for them to help, but Mrs. McClusky won't hear of it. Ms Booth acquires an injury while out running. In the art lesson (with Mr. Van Der Groot in temporary charge), Mrs. Monroe gives Alice a taste of her own medicine, having found the root of Julie Corrigan's trouble. She gives the second formers a subtle lesson on what it means to be a victim. For messing around, Jacko and Locko are kept behind to clean up paint from the floor - and their lunchtime pizza service suffers as a result. With Ms Booth unable to go to Dartmoor, Mrs. Monroe steps in as a replacement. Richard sells t-shirts to those going to Dartmoor - with a picture of Marilyn Monroe on them in honour of their esteemed teacher. He gives the money to cash-strapped Matthew to buy the necessary gear. At the Pizza parlour, Ted and Trevor are left holding the fort, but Ted notices Chrissy outside, and goes to talk to her. There's finally a chance for Richard, Nick and Matthew to see inside their neighbour's shed, when the "smugglers" leave it unlocked. Inside the shed, they find disguises - and then - a gun! Meanwhile Nick reports on the walky-talky that the smugglers are coming back in their van. Nick distracts the occupants, while the other two flee...

Episode #14.12

On the day of the trip to Dartmoor, Ray turns up late on his brother's bike and comes armed with an axe "for the mountaineering". It seems to lack brakes and he smashes into the side of the minibus. His enraged brother, Kenny, is not far behind... Matthew has trouble relaxing though - he is still worried about the run in with the smugglers. Mrs. Monroes acquires a caravan so she will not need to share the rather bare comforts of the girls' room. Mr. Robson envies her luxury, in amongst the snoring of the boys. The next morning, Mr. Robson looks a little worse for wear, while Mrs Monroe emerges from her caravan fighting fit. The kids greet her with a sudden display of their Marilyn Monroe t-shirts - but she retaliates with her own creation which proclaims "But there is only one". Already getting fed up with the rather organic nature of the food on offer, Ray announces to the others that he has a plan. Among the girls though, Chrissy seems to be off her food altogether. Back at home, Ted is with Trevor, helping with the pizzas, and Trevor tells Ted he'd like to hold a dinner party - but perhaps will do a practice run first. They invite Calley and Georgina. Ray leads Henry and Richard to his discovery - a dilapidated van with the keys inside. To their surprise though, the van is driven off. Watching it depart, Ray has another surprise - he's got his brother's wallet, full of money. The next night, Mr. Robson finds a cupboard to sleep in and Nick is persuaded to tell one of his horror stories about a mad axeman. The next day, Matthew can't seem to get the story out of his head, although Nick is adamant he made it up. Richard tells Matthew that Natalie fancies him, which somewhat takes his mind off the mad axeman. Out rock climbing with Justine, Chrissy suddenly decides against climbing any further. Justine works out why she's so scared of hurting herself: Chrissy lied about the test being false - she is pregnant after all...

Episode #14.13

Following on from Chrissy's admission to Justine that she's pregnant, Justine coerces Richard and Raymond to help take Chrissy back to the center. On route, Chrissy puts her foot in a stream, and can't walk any further. Ray runs off, saying he's got a good idea - and returns driving an old car towards them. Chrissy is taken back to camp, and Ray and Richard return the car to its original location - Richard puts a five pound note on the windscreen (from Ray's brother's wallet!). Back home, while Trevor despairingly studies a cookbook, for the planned dinner with Calley and Georgina, Ted proposes that they get in a takeaway meal to save time. Trevor sweet-talks Sue at the pizza parlour to do the cooking, making out that they are taking it to some old people. Back at camp, while Nick washes up, Fran makes a friend of guitar playing Jamie who lives at the centre. Richard is determined to wind Matthew up - but gets no help from Justine or Natalie. When it falls dark, he tells Matthew he's seen lights, like they've seen the smugglers use. Ray, dressed up as the mad axeman out of Nick's horror story, gives Matthew the shock of his life. Feeling pleased with themselves, Ray and Richard laugh back at their dormitory, but Justine walks in and ticks them off for being childish. Mr. Robson finds Matthew outside, hiding, and upset and gives him a pep talk. On the last day there's a final mission to perform involving navigation and an initiative test, and groups of four set out on their different journeys. Mrs. Monroe's team find themselves in canoes, while Justine's set are on horses. When Ray reaches his initiative test, he is alarmed to learn that his brother has been calling the centre, to let them know he is on his way. Matthew, with Justine's help, scares the life out of Ray and Richard by dropping rocks down, to make them think that Kenny has caught up with his errant younger brother Giving up the temporary shelter from the bombardment when someone mentions they've seen a gun, Richard and Ray run, and trip over into a small pond. From the laughter they hear, it is evident that everyone else was in on the joke. Back home, Trevor and Ted prepare for the dinner party - getting the ready prepared meal from the Pizza Parlour, hoping to fool Georgina and Calley. Unfortunately, they forget the horseradish sauce, and Sue asks Don, who is doing the pizza deliveries, to take it to Trevor. He duly arrives, and unwittingly reveals that the meal has been brought in. Afterwards, Trevor sits in disgrace with horseradish sauce over his best shirt bemoaning his luck...

Episode #14.14

Chrissy faints in the assembly and Ms Booth has a chat with her outside. She admits to her pregnancy. She goes to Mrs. McClusky's office, who arranges to call in her mother. The conversation is not private, however, as Alice and Becky are monitoring the conversation from their crawl space, and the news spreads around the school. Trevor puts ketchup in Neil Timpson's bag, but Neil figures it out to have been Jacko and plans a suitable revenge. Trevor suggests to Ted that Chrissy fainting in assembly points to her being pregnant, and that Ted ought to find out the truth about Jan Van Der Groot. At home, Chrissy makes peace with her mum and agrees to go an advisory service. She is advised that she must make a decision before twelve weeks, and she agrees to see a gynecologist. Ted, who seems to be in a daze, tries to find out where Chrissy is from Justine, but is told off by Ms Booth for interrupting Netball. Back inside, and in the crawlspace, Alice makes a false move, and her feet punch a hole in the ceiling tiles, and she shrieks in panic as she finds herself stuck. She is mocked by Neil Timpson below, and watched by a delighted Julie Corrigan. Later, when the hole is spotted, Mr. Griffiths attributes it to rodents or wasps, until Mr. Hargreaves points out the obvious human footprint on top of the ceiling tile. Ted meets up with Chrissy at a café, and he's upset that she didn't tell him earlier about the truth of her pregnancy. He tells her he will support her, marry her even! Back at school, Mrs. McClusky tells the Deputy Head that she is going to take early retirement and leave at the end of term. Outside her room he gives a delighted leap into the air!

Episode #14.15

In the morning, Richard hears a local radio news bulletin about a drugs raid in the vicinity. He, Nick and Matthew think it's related to the "smugglers" they've been watching. When Matthew spots the very same van seen at Richard's neighbour's house, he spreads the word to the other two, and they panic that they've infiltrated the school. A model boat race is to be held in the playground with Mr. Hankin and Mr. Mackenzie heading the teams, and one of the boats powered by steam. Neil Timpson becomes an unofficial booky to profit from the venture, thinking that Mr. Mackenzie's steam boat doesn't have a chance. In Mr. Hankin's class, while the teacher is fully absorbed in creating his boat, Matthew takes a peek worriedly into the corridor. He sees one of the "smugglers" with a gun in his hand. They decide they'll call the police at lunchtime. Mrs. Monroe's class is interrupted by Mr. Griffiths's entry, holding a ceiling tile, and asking if anyone recognizes the footprint. There's an unexpected diversion in the 4th form art class, when they are packed off to the Hall. Mrs. Monroe makes a mysterious announcement about their imaginations and asks for volunteers to help out on stage. Thinking that might be the safest place with armed drug dealers on the loose, Matthew, Richard and Nick come forward. To the music of Holst, they become part of a surreal play, as three men and a woman emerge from the floor of the stage, heavily made up as though they are the walking dead. The three lads are blindfolded and have their wrists bound and are led onto stage. They take part in a play that demonstrates against people unfairly imprisoned and have to guess objects placed before them - handcuffs, bars, a handgun ... Unfortunately, Matthew hasn't quite sussed the reality of the situation, and the gun puts terror into him, and he races off. Ted goes to speak to Mrs. McClusky about his legal position with Chrissy. She reassures him that the law probably won't prosecute. Outside as the boat race is prepared, Neil finds lots of bets supporting the steam-driven boat, and then the reason becomes clear. Mr. Mackenzie produces some pebbles for each craft to carry, as part of the rules about an "agreed payroll", so the test becomes more evenly matched. After the steam-powered machine wins, Matthew appears from the corner of the playground, and angrily tells Richard never to pull a stunt like that again, thinking that the entire business with the smugglers was something that Richard knew about. After school, Chrissy goes back to Ted's house with him, for moral support while Ted tells his folks about the pregnancy. In hospital, Brian Shaw's parents have bad news: he needs a bone marrow transplant if he is to survive his leukaemia. Mrs. Monroe brings in Jacko and Locko to see him - he lies weakly and without hair, in his hospital bed.

At that moment, Mr. Robson enters, investigating the strong smell of pizza, but Akik and Julie keep quiet about the pizza business's true operators. Jacko and Locko deliver a get well soon card to Brian, and leave a photo of happier times. Outside school, Georgina is trying to persuade Calley that she needs to wear glasses - her eyesight being the source of her bad headaches - and bullies her into visiting the optician. Ted and Chrissy's mother seem to be pushing Chrissy into having an abortion. Ted comes to tea, and meets Chrissy's mother - he discovers that her father is still ignorant of Chrissy's pregnancy. Episode #14.17

Interviews are held for Mrs. McClusky's replacement. Mrs. Monroe watches the clock anxiously - it's the morning of Brian Shaw's operation. Chrissy breaks the news to Ted in a rather public arena - she is going through with the pregnancy. He makes an ugly scene, shouting and banging the lockers in frustration, and at a rather poor moment, as a potential candidate for the headship is leaving after her interview. Afterwards Ms Booth has a reassuring chat with Chrissy, and Calley explodes with fury at Ted for his attitude. Mr. Robson offers Calley some work experience for the weekend at a hotel. Ray nags Nick senseless until he agrees to lend him his smart jacket. Justine is offered an exchange trip to Sweden, with travel and board paid for. Ted makes his peace with Chrissy outside in the park. Matthew takes his friends round to see his new flat - on the tenth floor of a tower block without an operational lift. His mother notices that he seems to be close to Natalie. Trevor does his evening pizza deliveries, and finds himself at the house of Carol whom he met at the Travel Agency work experience, and is invited in. Ray, Henry, Fran and Maria go to a club - but Ray emerges with a stain on his borrowed jacket. They miss their bus, and Ray tries to break into a nearby car to get some transport. As he bends down to the lock, his brother pulls up in his car and hauls him off - leaving the other three stranded...

Fran receives a letter from Jamie out on the wilds of Dartmoor, and can't quite decide how to handle his attention - Maria suggests she writes a letter back, herself. They struggle to find the right words to tell Peter at the pizza parlour, but in the end, Pete tells them that he's packing it in. Nick is on the warpath, hunting down Ray for his borrowed jacket. He's not happy to find that Ray's dyed it, to cover up the drink that was spilled on it. Calley starts her work experience at a hotel. Back at the hotel, Calley is given a go at being receptionist. Episode #14.19

As Ms Booth's sponsored fun run gets underway, Mr. Hargreaves passes the school sign, and imagines his own name on the board. A discussion of baby names takes place both at Chrissy's house, and between Ted and Trevor ("Trevor Fisk" being a rather unlikely suggestion!). Waiting for Ms Booth, who seems a little slow, the Grange Hill staff and pupils are distracted by food and miss the moment when she runs by. The exams start for the sixth formers, but Georgina is worried when Calley doesn't turn up in time. Fran confides to Maria that she received a letter from Jamie thanking her for a letter which she didn't send. In passing, Richard consoles Mr. Hargreaves for not getting the post of Headmaster - but no-one seems to know who will be the new Head. Mr. Robson finds Calley doing last minute revision in a corridor, and gets her on her way. Mr. Hargreaves spots a stranger in the playground. After the exam, Ted finds Chrissy waiting. She invites him to tea, and he reluctantly agrees. Georgina plays hard to get with Don, telling him that she's probably going to America in the holidays, but she might go with him to tour Europe if Calley could be persuaded to come too. The mystery visitor is revealed - it's Jamie who has come over to see Fran. She is confused as to why he's come - but he shows the letter in which she makes the request - and objects that it's not her handwriting. Maria offers to put him up. Fran has it out with Maria, working out that her friend is making a play for Jamie. Under pressure, Maria withdraws her offer for Jamie to stay, and he makes arrangements with Ray and Nick. Maria walks home, upset at losing both her chance with Jamie, and Fran's friendship. Ted has an awkward meeting with Chrissy's dad over tea, but it goes more smoothly than his last encounter and Ted leaves the house in one piece.

Episode #14.20

With an end of term dance in the offing, Jamie has a problem - he won't be admitted unless he has something resembling a Grange Hill uniform. He takes bits and pieces of clothing from Nick, Richard and Matthew, and changes in a phone booth. The new addition to the school causes confusion for Mr. Hargreaves, who's not happy about the half-dressed nature of Jamie's friends. Mr. Griffiths presents a gift to Mrs. McClusky: a handmade model of the school made out of lolly sticks! She thanks him, but tells him it will have pride and place indoors as she does not like garden ornaments. Unfortunately, Mr. Hargreaves, ignorant of this preference, drives back to school with a huge stone tortoise, and other ornaments in his car - as a leaving present for her. At his work experience in the Travel Agents, Trevor is surprised to see Georgina turn up with Don and ask for train passes for Europe. Trevor has resigned himself to not going to the dance, but Carol in the Travel Agents asks him to take her. Tasked with emptying out the lost property locker, Neil Timpson takes a bag of junk to the bottle recycling bin and is chastised by the collecting driver. He carelessly leaves his brother's CD player behind on the ground, and the now empty recycling bin is plonked down on top of it. When the brothers go looking for it, unaware of its fate, they are accused of stealing from the lockers, and are banned from the concert. While Mrs. McClusky is distracted, the staff carry her menagerie of garden stone ornaments to the stage in preparation for the presentation. The band's guitarist tries to help when the heavy stone tortoise is almost dropped, and he injures his hand. Jamie gives up his anonymity and steps in to replace him. Night falls, and people start arriving for the dance. Maria is waiting outside for Jamie - but she's told that he's already inside, and assumes that Fran's with him. A mystery singer is announced - Natalie - this pleases down-in-the-dumps Matthew, who had given up on seeing her. Outside the school, a revenging Barry Timpson phones the fire brigade, pretending to be Mr. Hargreaves. Mrs. McClusky is presented with her garden gifts, and has to put on a brave face. Calley gives a final announcement about the sad departure of Mrs. McClusky, and reveals another present: a slide show of photos that remember the happy days. As the slides are shown, Natalie sings a fond farewell to the long-standing headmistress of Grange Hill.
