20 Episodes 1989 - 1989
Episode 1
Clarke is beset by troubles on his paper round: difficult letterboxes, tall tower blocks, vicious looking dogs... Gonch is up early, preparing a new homework service on his home computer. Trevor, can of lager in one hand, seems disturbed by the idea that Georgina might have a new boyfriend. It amuses Ziggy to note Calley and Robbie are arguing as predicted. Mr.Bronson's car breaks down near school and is given a push start by Mauler and his gang. Clarke finds his bicycle guarded by an Alsatian so distracts it with something from the bins. He's so busy getting away, that he leaves the newspaper bag behind. Tegs's reverie on the sofa is disturbed by furious rattling of the front door. He escapes to the upstairs - but he finds it is his brother, who's on the run. When Justine arrives, Tegs tells his brother that he had planned to stay off school, but he's told he must go. When Georgina catches up with her friends, she tells them that Trevor has been following her around, and chatting her up - much to her disgust. Danny Kendall seems to be the first into the school - but to Mr. Bronson's astonishment, he's the first to leave as well!

Episode 2
Mr. Bronson makes a point of finding the errant Danny Kendall. A Design A Mosaic For the Swimming Pool competition is announced. Ronnie is having a birthday party, and is determined that certain people aren't invited, including Trevor Cleaver and Ziggy Greaves. Tegs lays a false trail for his brother, showing round a letter sent by him from Scotland. Justine grows suspicious and goes round to see Tegs - and meets his brother. Susi and Chrissy send off for catalogue clothes in order to try them out for free. Has Vince really got psychic powers? He tells Georgina "not to go that way" just as the ceiling collapses in front of her - but he was merely trying to help her avoid Cleaver. Gonch explains his homework service to Ziggy and Robbie. Back at Tegs's house, plain clothes police arrive, as his father does, but they find nothing inside, and his father remains unaware of Tegs's brother.

Episode 3
Miss Booth worries that Mr. Bronson may be hounding Danny Kendall, just like he did to Ant Jones. Calley comes up with the "A" Party/"B" Party idea to distract would-be gatecrashers. Justine and Tegs go home at lunchtime, taking his brother, who is hiding from the police, some fish and chips. Outside, they are being monitored by surveillance units. Trev gets Vince to pick a winner for the afternoon horse-racing - convinced that he has psychic abilities. He commandeers the television room, but the racing is interrupted by the appearance of Mr. Robson. Back at Tegs's house, the police burst in and catch Mark Ratcliffe red-handed. An encounter with the structural engineer who's come to investigate the ceiling collapse gives Helen a sudden interest in Engineering, but she finds her subjects are inappropriate for that career choice. Calley's not happy when she finds she's done Mauler's French homework - she thought she was doing Robbie's. Gonch is looking for someone to do the actual work in his homework venture, and Mandy Freemont seems to fit the bill. Tegs and Justine are told about Mark being caught, but Tegs won't listen when he's told his brother was a bully at the Youth Custody Centre.

Episode 4
Preparations are underway at Calley's house for their 'A' party, to which they've invited older boys. It's not long before some decorative plates are broken... Trevor is as determined to go as the girls are to stop him. Robbie's reluctance to go to the 'A' party without his friends forces Calley to ask Ziggy and Gonch after all. Danny's rudeness to Mr. Griffiths causes him to have a discussion with Mrs. McClusky. She offers the carrot of possible work experience with a design company in return for better attendance. Ronnie's 'B' party gets off to a bad start when a drunken Trevor turns up and starts trying it on with Georgina. Then things worsen when Ronnie's cousins overhear about the second party and ask to come and then Mauler turns up with his crowd. Ronnie blows out the candles - and then all hell breaks loose as Trevor falls onto the cakes, and throws up, Mauler starts a fight for which Ziggy is blamed. The 'B' party idea is scrapped too when it seems far too many people are waiting outside Calley's house. The words of Ronnie's dad speak volumes about the generation divide: "tell that lad on the disco to announce the last waltz, or whatever you do these days..." It's left to Wesley to sort things out, while Calley is hidden from view and driven away. As everyone goes their separate ways, Georgina senses someone behind her - but it's only Ziggy, who walks her home...

Episode 5
Justine starts the day by earning two detentions - one for each earring... Chrissy gets attacked on the way to school - the third this week, according to one of the teachers: this prompts Miss Booth into offering self-defence classes. Danny gets cracking on the swimming pool mosaic - and he forgets that he is supposed to meet Mr. Tilly about his work experience. Chrissy and Susi give a short fashion exhibition. Determined to pursue his Homework Service idea, Gonch interviews brainy-looking students to try to find someone who would be good at doing French essays. Matthew helps divert the Alsation that stands between Clarke and his paper round, until he falls off his bike. He escapes into the tower block, and when he and Clarke come out, they find the dog gone - but so has his bike!

Episode 6
Mandy Freemont is the keystone in Gonch & Ziggy's computerized homework service, so Gonch is out to impress her - surely the huge volume of Les Miserables on his desk will help? Helen pursues her interest in engineering, with some work experience in the offing. Miss Booth's self-defence class hits a snag with union rules about overtime. Still finding their day-to-day activities, dogged (so to speak) by the ferocious Alsation, Clarke and Matthew use the tower block to survey the area using binoculars. They spot Clarke's lost bike - and dash off in pursuit down the stairs. When they get to the spot, the bike is no longer there - and Matthew realizes he left the binoculars at the top... Ziggy and Robbie find Mandy outside the community hall, where they find what appears to be a pop group called Les Diapositives on in the evening, as part of the French Club - they tell her that Gonch is interested. Mrs. McClusky and Danny come to a new working agreement - including Danny's extra requirement "Keep Bronson Off My Back" in big bold letters! The sport of Street Hockey (hockey on roller-skates) becomes very popular, and a boys versus girls match is held. Trevor uses it as way of getting back at Ziggy, who's become his rival for Georgina (except she continues to have absolutely no interest in Trevor), but after tripping Ziggy up, Mr. Robson kicks him out. Gonch attends the community centre to see the band "Les Diapositives de Bretagne", to further his aim of bringing brain-box Mandy on board for the homework scheme. He takes a seat next to Mandy, and Ziggy and Robbie creep into the back of the hall. To their surprise, what follows turns out to be a presentation of slides by Mr. Bronson - his holiday in Bretagne - given in French!

Episode 7
Mr. Bronson is on the warpath when he finds out about the Danny Kendall contract with Mrs. McClusky. Tegs's social worker can't find him, and goes to see Mrs. McClusky. When Tegs is rounded up, he's rather defensive about his fathers frequent absence, and his dirty clothes. Vince's "psychic powers" have given Trevor the tip for "Lucky Shark" - but he stands to lose rather a lot of money. In Art, the first formers are given the task of drawing around Mr. Griffiths: when Danny Kendall pops by, he likens what they are doing to police officers chalking round a corpse! The catalogue clothes arrive - but Suzi becomes paranoid about the clothes getting damaged. Ronnie shows off her new moped. Justine helps Tegs clean up his act, or more precisely his shirt. Listening to the races on a hidden radio, Trevor storms off in the middle of a lesson when "Lucky Shark" doesn't live up to expectations. Danny's work experience at the Swimming Pool is cancelled when Mr. Bronson gives him a bad report. Danny angrily goes to Mrs. McClusky, and leaves the school in a rage. After school, Mr. Bronson gets Ziggy and Robbie to carry some books out to his car - except that it has mysteriously gone, and in its place is a pink outline traced round its contours..

Episode 8
Trevor's out to get Vince for his failed prediction, and Mauler wants to muscle in on Gonch's Sweepstake. When Mauler and Ted chase Gonch and Ziggy through the estate, there's a tragedy in store when they discover Mr. Bronson's missing car.

Episode 9
Vince is back, and goes into hiding from the wrath of Trevor, after his failed prediction. There's some concern about the continuing disappearance of Danny Kendall. Gonch and Ziggy turn it into a sweep-stake at 20p a turn. Miss Drummer has arranged some better work experience for would-be engineer Helen - but it's at a local garage, and not remotely appropriate to her intended career. Gonch continues to "work" on Mandy - to get her help with the homework scheme - or is he developing more of a personal interest in the girl? Mauler and Ted are determined to have a go at Ronnie's moped. They have a strange conversation with Gonch and Robbie about getting half their sweepstakes proceeds - but it's all subterfuge for getting hold of Ronnie's bag - and the moped key inside. To Ronnie's horror, when she goes outside, she finds Mauler using her moped, playing at Bullfighting. Trevor just won't seem to take no for an answer when it comes to Georgina, even after Helen puts the truth of the situation to him in plain English. When school is over, Trevor gangs up with Mauler to chase after Ziggy, Robbie and Gonch. There follows a protracted run around the block, and the three outwit their pursuers. But there's a shock in store when they see Mr. Bronson's car - inside is the still, staring, body of Danny Kendall...

Episode 10
Mrs. McClusky announces the death of Danny Kendall and a memorial service. Miss Booth is distraught, and breaks down during the first lesson. She can't face the prospect of the forthcoming Isle of Wight trip with just her and Mr. Bronson in charge. It's not long before accusative graffiti is pointing the finger at Mr. Bronson. The death causes Robbie to think about his own mortality. Not everyone seems shocked though - Trevor brightly asks Gonch if he's won the sweep-stake to predict Danny's return: Mandy suggests that Gonch plant a tree in Danny's memory, using the sweep-stake money. Susi's catalogue clothes arrive, but she has second thoughts in consideration of them being damaged. When they are trying them out, they get in the way of Trevor and Ziggy's tomato ketchup fight. Luckily Carole's mother works in a dry cleaner shop. Justine is called to Mrs. McClusky's office because Tegs has gone missing from his care home, but she can't help. Mrs. McClusky finds out that Danny's death was by natural causes - a brain hemorrhage with the same underlying cause as his earlier illness. Before the memorial service gets under way the tree is planted, and his friends speak about their memories of Danny. Dir Robert Gabriel

Episode 11
Someone is hiding out in Grange Hill, carefully avoiding being seen by the caretaker, Mr. Griffiths - but his suspicions are aroused by the open window. When Mr. Bronson arrives, and drops a sheaf of papers, there's a tacit agreement among the watching students, and no-one helps to pick them up. Mr. Bronson seems withdrawn - he tells Mr. Mackenzie he can't go on the Isle of Wight trip. Trevor hides himself away with a couple of cans of lager - later Ziggy and Robbie find him outside, legless and hide him in the gym while he sobers up. Susi's catalogue clothes come back from the dry cleaners - clean but with various defects that make them no longer "new". Mandy tries to persuade Mrs. McClusky to allow motorbikes to be brought inside school to stop them being stolen or damaged. She offers the idea that the standard of driving can be monitored if bikes are brought in. Ziggy and Robbie go to check on Trevor, but the self-defence class is starting and they have to hide behind the curtain. Unfortunately, Ziggy sneezes, and Mr. Robson hauls them out. At the end of the day, Mr. Griffiths locks the school up, but inside, a shadowy figure watches him leave...

Episode 12
Who is ringing Georgina and hanging up without speaking? She tells Helen, who in turns blames Ziggy. Susi's mother confronts her about the bills she has received from the catalogue company. Helen has her first day at her Job Experience for an engineering company, but finds the workplace filled with prejudice against women. Matthew arrives at school early, and glimpses someone hiding upstairs, who runs off. Mrs. McClusky gets Mr. Griffiths to allocate some space around the back of school for motorcycles. Matthew finds a note in his pocket addressed to Justine. Alone with Mr. Bronson in a classroom, Calley tries to talk round Mr. Bronson into going on the Isle of Wight trip: "We don't all hate...", she accidentally blurts out. He changes his mind, and announces that he will go, after all. Matthew tells Mr. Griffiths about the mystery person hiding in the school, and the caretaker cautiously looks around after hours, but leaves. After he's gone, Justine emerges - she goes upstairs and encounters Tegs who is now living in the school and smug about having the place to himself. But they are not alone in the building...

Episode 13
The Isle of Wight field trip sets out. Mandy surprises Gonch with her glasses-free look: she was given contact lenses for her birthday. Gonch realizes he's goofed by not getting her a present. Trevor hides some beer in Vince's bag, so he gets the blame, and Mr. Mackenzie bins the booze. There's a tangible disappointment in the air as Mr. Bronson climbs on board. At the ferry, there's a short break while Gonch buys an emergency pressie for Mandy, but he is too slow and the ferry leaves without him. He takes the catamaran, and arrives ahead of the main coach, leaving Mr. Mackenzie looking for him, and out of pocket. In the girls dormitory, Georgina has received another worrying note from her secret admirer. The girls are getting fed up with the Grange Hill boys, and lose no time in getting to know the lads of another school. When they go off on the local train, the boys are in hot pursuit. Back at the dormitories, Georgina and Helen search the boys beds, looking for clues about Georgina's admirer. While Mauler and Ted come back, the girls have to hurriedly hide under the beds. While there, Georgina finds proof that it is Trevor who is sending the notes. Mr. Bronson seems to be trying to impress the camp's manager by his swimming, much to the amusement of Mauler and Ted. As Trevor returns, he makes a lunge for passing Georgina, who quickly elbows him, and puts an end to his alcohol-induced ardour.

Episode 14
Another day starts on the Isle of Wight Field Trip. The girls are invited to the other school's barbecue, and the boys talk about gatecrashing it. Mandy explains the idea of the American prom to Gonch. Down on the beach, Trevor is drowning his sorrows, after the incident with Georgina. When he doesn't turn up later, Fiona and Robbie go looking for him - they just find a shoe. They report back to Miss Booth, and the coastguard is alerted. Meanwhile, out in the ocean, Trevor is struggling to stay afloat on an unstable large rubber ring. Gonch reveals his original homework plan to Mandy, who is offended that he wasn't interested in her for own sake. While there's no news about Trevor, Ziggy comforts Georgina who blames herself for Trevor's predicament. Out at sea, a rescue motorboat spots Trevor, and they pull him aboard. Miss Booth castigates Vince and Fiona for hiding Trevor's drunken behaviour. Ziggy, Robbie and Mauler have a hosepipe attack planned for the barbecue, but Mr. Mackenzie is on to them, and they end up soaking themselves. Mandy refuses outright to participate in the homework scheme, but suggests computer dating instead. Robbie isn't pleased to see Calley assert her independence by snogging one of the rival school kids. Helen has a heart to heart with Trevor who, ashamed by his rescue, promises to stay clear of the booze.

Episode 15
Helen is fobbed off with secretarial work on her first full day at the Work Experience. Missing crisps in the stock room are increasing Mr. Griffiths determination to catch the mystery person hiding overnight in the school. He thinks it is Tegs, but Justine has persuaded him to return to the care home. Trevor, spied on by Matthew and Clarke, seems to be back to his old ways, hoarding beer in his locker. Gonch and Mandy introduce the idea of the end of term American prom to Mrs. McClusky. In the meantime, Ziggy and Robbie are planning to cash in on the idea by a computerized dating service to match partners for the event. At lunchtime, Helen is pleased to be told she will be working on the shop floor - but Neil, who is told to show her the ropes has a chip on his shoulder about working with a mere girl. There's a surprise in store though in the canteen, when she bumps into "Francis" - Mauler no less, on his own work experience. Mr. Bronson tells Mrs. McClusky that he is going to take early retirement, and it is time for her to tell him what she really thinks of his non-supportive methods. Gonch and Mandy get Robbie to be their guinea pig in their computer dating trials and find him the perfect match. Armed with a new bike alarm, Matthew and Clarke follow Trevor to the off-license, thinking he is going to buy more booze - but in fact he's trying to sell some of his stock back, without success. They follow him to the canal, where he tries to pour it away. As he does this, he is accosted by lads who are horrified at the sacrilege of chucking away good beer. Matthew and Clarke find Trevor tied to the bridge without his trousers, which are themselves attached to the bridge. Just as Clarke is untying Trev's trousers, they hear the bike alarm go off, and what's more, the thief is accompanied by the Alsation that gave them so much trouble before. Trev's trousers fall into the canal, but at last there is hope that the dog will lead them to the person who keeps taking the bike!

Episode 16
Gonch and Mandy's dating service has hit a snag when it matches Robbie with Calley, a relationship which so recently came to a bitter end. Mr. Bronson has a new look - without his wig ("syrup of figs", as Trevor puts it). At work experience, Helen cuts her finger when the young man in charge of her doesn't find her protective gloves. In the canteen, Neil bad-mouths Helen and Mauler, and gets a faceful of food for his reward. Mauler gets the sack for his revenge, but Helen gets a better job to do on the factory floor. Justine's idea to get her mother to adopt Tegs goes awry when her sister makes an objection. After dark, Gonch and Robbie come back to school as a dare from Trevor, but are met by Mr Griffiths who has laid traps of his own to find out who is staying in the school at night. Inside, they also find Mauler and Ted. After some false alarms, Mr. Griffiths finds his gaffer tape traps across the window have been broken. Upstairs, the lads find the art room in a mess, so the intruder (or ghost!) must be in the library. In the darkness relieved only by a torch, Mr. Griffiths searches the library, while the lads wait nervously by the door. There's a sudden bang as a dark shape springs up - the boys make a terrified run for it...

Episode 17
It's the day after all the night-time shenanigans - so just who or what has been locked up in Mrs. McClusky's office? A rumour spreads that there's a ghost in the school. Inside Mrs. McClusky's office, the mystery is revealed: an ex pupil from Zammo's year has been sleeping in the school. Once Mr. Griffiths had raised the alarm, Mr. Bronson put the young man up for the night. The swimming pool mosaic with Chrissy's design hits some practical difficulties, when the workmen prove to be indifferent to the precise colours defined. The dating-by-numbers service gets going, matching "Big Tel" with someone whose handwriting Gonch has difficulty reading - could it be "Maureen?" Helen has a talk with her career advisor, and is told she has to knuckle under to get a college place in order to get a chance in a career of Engineering. Interruptions from Trevor and Georgina don't help. Justine goes round for tea at Tegs's foster home: he is being well-treated, almost spoilt. After school, there are two people waiting for their respective dates at the bike sheds: Mauler and Big Tel. Matthew and Clarke find their nemesis tied to a lamppost and wait for its owner to collect the dog. When he arrives, they are astonished to see he is a vicar, but he gets on a bus before the duo can take action. Back at the bike sheds, the penny drops... "Maureen" and "Mauler" are one and the same!

Episode 18
Mauler is on the warpath following the Mauler/Maureen incident, with Gonch in the firing line. Everyone seems to want to be interviewed for the local radio, especially Mr. Bronson, and Gonch, but fate and Mauler, respectively, seem determined to stop them. Tegs hasn't turned up for school, and Justine is worried about where he has gone. She finds him outside the school, and the idea of finding Tegs's mother is hatched. Ziggy and Robbie manage to get an interview for the local radio, taking credit for the dating idea. Matthew and Clarke use a baby monitor to tag the Alsation, and follow it home. Mr. Robson calls together Mandy, Ronnie, Fiona and Gonch to work out the plans for the end of term prom, proposing a Hollywood-style dress-code. Justine and Tegs go back to Teg's old house, find it boarded up, but make an entry using a drainpipe. Justine explores, looking for clues to help find Tegs's mother. Finally, Matthew and Clarke chase the Alsation to his home, and find Clarke's bike. They overhear the vicar inside telling his son how they can't afford a bike. Clarke takes back his bike and they tear off, pursued by the dog once again. At Tegs's house, Justine finds some letters inside some old newspaper - Tegs is delighted when he sees they contain his mother's address.

Episode 19
Gonch tries to cash in on the radio broadcast by selling cassettes of the broadcast. Plans are underway for the Prom and Mr. Bronson's leaving present. Unwittingly, Mr. Bronson contributes to his own fund. Mauler is going as Rambo, and God help anyone else who has the same outfit. Vince uses psychology to get Trevor to dress up as Rambo too. Mr. Aldridge, who has heard the radio broadcast, calls Mrs. McClusky to suggest that the next work experience session should include a female teacher too. The broadcast has had other beneficial effects - the hole in the roof is fixed. Tegs and Justine take a bus to go and see his mum. Tegs arrives at the address he was given for his mother, but the occupant doesn't know her, or have a forwarding address. The swimming pool mosaic is unveiled. As the Prom band gives a rehearsal, Georgina tries to catch Ziggy's eye, but he still hasn't asked her to the Prom. The music is not to everyone's taste - Mr. Griffiths dons a pair of ear protectors to shut it out...

Episode 20
Grange Hill prepares for its end of term glitzy Prom, and Gonch erects a sign: "Grange Hill Studios". There's an outstanding dating problem - Ziggy and Georgina, who clearly want to go with each other, yet neither will make the first move. At home, Mauler puts the finishing touches to his Rambo outfit... as does Trevor at his home. However, Helen, his prom partner is not too pleased at his costume. Robbie has a surprise girlfriend who leaves the others speechless - Paula from the local radio station! When Trevor sees Vince dressed not as Rambo at all, and that Mauler is also coming as Rambo, he realizes he has been set up. Trevor makes a hasty exit, but encounters his equivalently dressed Mauler coming in. Subterfuge is used to convince Ziggy that there's a Dating-Service girl who's not been matched up - of course it's Georgina. "Mighty Mouth from Merseyside", aka Ziggy, is given a leaving present - an Arsenal scarf. "Deputy Jailor" Mr. Bronson gets his own present:- a kissogram! After that, Gonch and Mandy do the other half of the Ziggy-Georgina pairing, and finally the two are brought together. There are two young gatecrashers found outside - Chrissy and Suzi, all dressed up and nowhere to go. Mauler and Ted are still chasing Trevor around, but he ducks into the Gents. Finally, after a tussle with Gonch and Vince, where Gonch's sleeve is ripped off, Rambo does emerge, but it's not Trevor, it's Mr. Robson, the third, and perhaps definitive, version!
