24 Episodes 1987 - 1987
Episode 1
There are a few changes at the school as a new year starts. Mr. Baxter has left, and Mr. Bronson is the new Deputy Head. Roland's got contact lenses, but it's only a matter of time before he loses one of them. The new Sixth Form building has a few problems, not least the primary school-sized toilets. Imelda's back with a hit list, and a can of hair dye. Hollo is the first to suffer. Nervous Mr. Scott starts, a new form tutor. Before he arrives, Imelda sprays the teacher's noticeboard, and hurriedly tosses the can to Ziggy, who has to hide it just Mrs. McClusky walks in. Ziggy catches the blame, but doesn't implicate Imelda - instead he blames non-existent "Wimbledon". Zammo and Fay are in the 6th form re-sitting their 'O' levels: Fay is rather put out to find she has to do lessons with 5th years. Ziggy won't believe that Helen is a Liverpool fan, and Mr. Griffiths catch them fighting. There's bad news about Harriet (the donkey who appeared the Christmas before last) whose stables are being closed down. Ziggy and Helen overhear and try to persuade Mr. Griffiths to house the animal. Trevor abandons Vince to his fate in the hands of Imelda in return for a truce.

Episode 2
Mr. Griffiths promises Mrs. McClusky he'll be taking Harriett out of the stables before the week is out. In the 6th form common room, everyone seems to be blaming Banksie for the place being untidy. Imelda, now aligned with Trevor behaves outrageously in Mr. Scott's class, and is not much better behaved with Mr. Kennedy. Mr. Griffiths starts reading a book on "how to care for your donkey", measures up one of the sheds, and starts buying timber. Ziggy gets the better of Trevor and Imelda, sticking a "divy" sticker on her forehead and causing Trevor to get his tie ruined. Later, Trev borrows Vinces tie, but has no intention of returning it. Helen seems to be avoiding Imelda's Terrorhawk gang. In the canteen, Imelda causes further trouble and Ziggy borrows a pound from Mr. Scott. Miss Booth has a new project for Danny - painting the wall of a community centre. He seems to be enthusiastic, but then lets her down by refusing to work as a partner. She gets to the root of his isolation - he lost his twin brother when he was a child. Ziggy and Helen turn up, and to their alarm, Danny has a momentary blackout. While Helen shows she knows more about football than Ziggy, Mr. Griffiths turns up in a van and brings them to the donkey sanctuary. Ziggy catches on to Mr. Griffiths's plan, and he and Helen promise to keep the secret... A reprieve for Harriet - Happy Days!

Episode 3
Ziggy is keeping any eye on Danny after seeing him blackout. Ziggy admits Robbie into the donkey conspiracy. Discipline becomes a serious problem for Mr. Scott's registration. Danny Kendal comes up with the idea of "Radio Grange Hill". Imelda cuts Vince's tie in two and rips off Hollo's badge. Ant Jones, now a St. Joseph's boy, makes an appearance to see Georgina. There are secrets to be discovered: Calley's secret language, and Vince's secret room. Mr. Bronson introduces a diary per pupil, for exchange of information between teachers and parents. The new staff rule book, intended for adult eyes only, falls into Freddie Mainwaring's hands. Mr. Griffiths plans out "Operation Harriet" with Ziggy, Helen and Robbie...

Episode 4
The idea of Grange Hill radio gathers momentum. In Vince's secret hideout, Hollo spills red paint over his trainers, and disguises the mistake by painting the footwear red. Danny walks out of Mr. Bronson's lesson, and looks distinctly unwell. Mr. Griffiths completes the preparation for Operation Harriet. Ziggy promises Vince a new tie in return for borrowing a pound. He finds a spare tie, but it turns out to be Imelda's and she is not happy. Julie has a date with Freddie Mainwaring. Fay pokes fun at her for going out with someone two years her junior, but Julie thoughtlessly retorts that it's better than going out with a teacher. When the donkey is brought back, to Mr. Griffiths dismay, there is still a netball game going on outside, so Ziggy distracts Mrs. Reagan with stories of a fictitious fight. When Harriet is finally brought safely into the makeshift stable, it has already been infiltrated by Ant Jones and Danny Kendall, who watch the donkey's arrival with astonishment.

Episode 5
The problem of Harriet's exercise comes up, but the disguise built by Ziggy and Helen is not very effective. Mr. Bronson puts Danny Kendall on report. News of the donkey is spreading fast. Roland uses Harriet as a lever to get a larger common room out of Mr. Griffiths. Danny is having recurring bouts of feeling faint: the staff are concerned, except for Mr. Bronson who puts it down to bad behaviour. In revenge for Ziggy's failed promise of a replacement tie, and the pound he borrowed, Vince hides Ziggy's bag in his secret room. Outside school, Zammo is met by his old drugs crowd who are on the scrounge for money. Jackie catches him giving them some money, and finds it hard to believe he's not back to his old ways. Down in the secret room, Vince and Hollo hide from Ziggy who passes nearby - then it's Vince's turn to spill red paint all over his shoes. Harriet escapes, and chews a car aerial. Mrs. McClusky is astonished to find dung outside the entrance, but there's worse news when Imelda emerges from the stable...

Episode 6
Ziggy still hasn't paid Vince his quid back, and can't get his bag back from him. Hollo becomes a peacemaker and returns Ziggy's bag secretly, and paying the pound back as though it had come from Ziggy. Imelda is disruptive in Mr. Scott's registration, where the new pupil's diary is given out. Julia asks Freddie why he's ignoring her now that he's seeing Julie Marchant. Imelda smashes a flask in Chemistry, and totally ignores Mr. Scott. Ronnie asks Mr. Kennedy if Imelda can be moved out of her class because she is so disruptive. The plans for a radio station hit a small snag when it is realized that a couple of hundred pounds are needed to make use of the equipment. Imelda threatens to tell Mrs. McClusky about Harriet, and a chase ensues as she runs from the stable. Ziggy and Robbie try to prevent her getting to a teacher, but they are too late, and Mrs. McClusky overhears as the secret of Harriet is exposed. Finally, Mrs. McClusky goes to the stable and agrees Harriet can stay, at least temporarily. Jackie confesses to Zammo that she never wanted to split with him - but there's still that nagging doubt he's continuing to take drugs. Danny has some success as a pavement artist to earn money for the school radio, until Mr. Bronson puts an end to it. Banksie sees Zammo and Jackie leave together, arm in arm, and storms off on his bike.

Episode 7
Danny Kendall throws his diary in the pond, but Mr. Bronson fishes it out later. A bottle day is announced, collecting glass to sell to the council. Vince and Hollo think this might be a good way of earning money for themselves. Danny's father comes to school to discuss things with Mrs. McClusky - but it turns out Danny's problem is an illness for which he is on medication. Roland eavesdrops the conversation, and then spreads the word to the other 6th formers who propose to start raising money. Steven gets involved in some role-play, but can't get the bad situation between himself, Jackie and Zammo out of his head. Roland goes around the local shops trying to get someone to donate some radio spare parts and cable. He manages to get a local shop to donate some cable, and instructs Ziggy and Robbie to go and fetch the cable, which is on a small reel - however, they take a huge reel instead. Meanwhile, Vince and Hollo are out and about looking for empty bottles. A milk float seems very tempting, but unfortunately the milkman comes back before they can start unloading the bottles. When Ziggy and Robbie roll their large reel past a telecoms engineer, the milkman (already suspicious about Vince and Hollo) misunderstand the situation, and shout to the engineer. Just as this happens, the pair lose control of the reel which spins backwards down the hill, and the milkman skilfully dives over it... Imelda can't get any chips in the canteen, and feeling in a spiteful mood, takes it out on Harriet by letting the donkey loose. When Mr. Bronson emerges at the end of the school day, he finds his car is dented, and the aerial twisted. Banksie's simmering bad mood explodes as Fay nags him to wash up the cups in the 6th form room, and he smashes one against the wall, just as Mr. Bronson enters. He assumes it was Steven Banks who has vandalized his car, but there's more down-to-earth evidence that points the finger, or rather hoof, firmly in Harriet's direction...

Episode 8
"There'll be broken glass and tears," predicts Mr. Griffiths, and he's right as Mr. Bronson immediately reverses into a pile of bottles. Julia's lost her diary, and wonders if Fred has it - but he calls her Julie, and claims innocence. Ziggy bets Robbie two quid that he can crack Calley's secret code. They hide in the stable to listen to the girls talking, but Ziggy's boot is visible. The first test transmission takes place for Radio Grange Hill. Vince and Hollo suggests to Mrs. McClusky that the Bottle Day money goes to help Danny Kendall. Banksie asks Jackie to go with him on the barge trip, but she refuses. Imelda almost finds Vince's secret room, but Mr. Griffiths catches her before she can break in. When she leaves the building, Calley, Ronnie and Jane pounce on her, pushing her into a muddy puddle. When they regroup, pleased with themselves for avenging Mr. Scott, they don't realize Ziggy and Robbie are listening in the tree above. Ziggy thinks he's cracked their code - but the girls have a second system in operation. When Roland goes to congratulate Danny on the working radio, he finds him lying unconscious by the equipment. An ambulance is called to the school

Episode 9
With Danny Kendall in hospital there are alternative fund-raising meetings all over the place. Imelda's excuse of "the donkey ate my diary" doesn't seem particularly believable to the increasingly over-wrought Mr. Scott. Imelda rips up her report card, and a fight ensues with Ronnie: Mr. Scott is almost reduced to tears, and seeks help from Mr. Kennedy. In his absence, the dispute with Imelda becomes a free-for-all fight, stopped by Mr. Kennedy. When it comes to the Danny Kendall meetings, Roland's one is hugely popular, and virtually no-one goes to the boring one with Mr. Bronson. Various auctions and sponsored events are proposed. Ziggy is keen on people sponsoring him to climb the school building, even though it is self-evident that it won't be cost-effective. Miss Booth turns up, bored with the official meeting, but leaves, feeling unwanted. Ronnie shocks Hollo by telling him that she's been going out with Gonch, who is about to return after his time in Saudi Arabia. In Harriet's stable, Imelda bullies Helen into revealing where Ziggy hid the tin with the sponsorship money, and she takes it.

Episode 10
Gonch comes back with gifts from Saudi Arabia and has initial problems convincing Mr. Scott he's not another fictional classmate. Ziggy comes in shouting at Imelda, who goes completely mad, eventually slouching down against the desk, refusing to move. Mr. Glover comes in to complain to Mrs McClusky about what he perceives as wasted time in raising money for Danny Kendall. Hollo seems a little disconsolate to find Gonch spending so much time with Ronnie. Banksie's plan to be alone with Jackie goes wrong when she tells him she's going with Zammo to a Narcotics Anonymous weekend instead, and Gonch takes her place. Imelda's mother is brought in to discuss Imelda's behaviour, and after a fruitless discussion Mrs. McClusky expels her daughter. The idea of a radio programme called "Sounding Off" is proposed, an audio version of the "Speaking Wall".

Episode 11
The day of the barge trip dawns. Fred seems to have brought his entire wardrobe and Ziggy can't find the television. Just who is the shadowy figure watching from behind the bushes? Fred's planned a bit of subterfuge for Georgina to get Ant Jones on board. The boys burn the planned sausage tea, so Roland makes a Cauliflower Cheese instead. At night, Mr. Kennedy quashes any chances of secret messages being sent, and Freddy's snoring causes some hilarity. Gonch has ill-advisably let Trevor steer (for a 75p fee), and when Ronnie is wolf-whistled by some fisherman on the bank, he aims the barge for the shore and runs aground. Fred ignores the suggestion of wearing Wellingtons, and his smart trainers are ruined by the muddy track. Mr. Scott dares four of the boys to do a little survival exercise, reading a map, and finding a campsite on their own. It seems dangerous, but Mr. Scott is following them from a safe distance. Back at the barge, Freddy gets down to some serious snoring, but the rope holding the barge slowly becomes loose...

Episode 12
The barge trip continues. Stowaway Ant Jones finds his plans a little upset by the fact that the barge is no longer attached to the shore. Ziggy's group find themselves in a field of sheep, hungry with no tin opener. The girls tow the barge back to the shore, and Ant has no opportunity to escape undetected. The guys are annoyed to find "their girls" being chatted up by some local lads - and strongly suspect they they were the ones who untied their barge in the night. Further conflict is delayed when Fred is spotted, covered head to foot in mud. Later though, the locals come back, and Grange Hill are heavily outnumbered. Ziggy falls out of a tree, and dislocates a finger. The nightlife seems a bit wanting, until Mr. Scott tells the group that he spotted a local disco. He also proposes a sing-song, but Freddy is unimpressed and goes to make himself a hot drink. After a bit of messing about with Julie, the hot drink gets forgotten, Fred goes to sleep - but the gas is still on... As the sing-song continues, Ant Jones bursts in, and saves the day, at the expense of revealing his presence. With all the change of clothes Freddy's needed, he's down to an Arun sweater and jeans. The disco proves to be a childish affair, with all the local kids from the earlier tussle.

Episode 13
Mrs. McClusky is interviewed for the radio, and is given the third degree about the secret files held on students. Anonymous "Sound Off" recordings have been made, allowing students to give their opinions in small sound bites. Work experience is arranged for sixth formers, and Steven Banks isn't too pleased to be given work with a handicapped centre, rather than his preference for a garage. Robbie makes a banner for Ziggy's rooftop climb, but there is some disagreement about the spelling of "woz 'ere". Miss Booth punishes them for abusing art materials by making them clean up, but they make an even worse mess. Julie and Fred go and see Danny Kendall, to get him to record an inaugural message. Mrs. McClusky isn't happy to find that her interview has been edited to make her meaning different. Zammo takes Jackie window shopping for engagement rings. Laura's mother is not pleased that Laura is riding pillion on Banksie's motor bike.

Episode 14
Vince has become disillusioned with the den, since Gonch has returned with his own ideas, and Trevor is intent on finding out its location. Jackie comes to school sporting her new engagement ring. Steven gets more and more upset as the news is drummed home, and Jackie's brother is also not pleased at the news. Radio Grange Hill starts its broadcast, with the voice of Danny Kendall, followed by horoscopes which have been fine-tuned with Ziggy Greaves getting a personalized message. After school, students are gathering outside the school, puzzling the teachers. Ziggy finds a shortcut out onto the roof, and conquers his fear to some extent to put the banner up using a fire escape ladder. When he comes down for his accolades, the banner has gone, and Ziggy seems destined to face an unsatisfied mob. Mr. Bronson unwittingly comes to the rescue, asking why he just saw the banner float down from the roof, and the sponsorship money is collected from a reluctant crowd.

Episode 15
Freddy collects opinions from people at the gate. Georgina and Helen bunk off hockey and take an art lesson instead. Gonch and Hollo take an interest in giving Harriet exercise - offering donkey rides to the public! Hollo goes along with the plan but seems embarrassed to be seen with the donkey. Trevor Cleaver wrecks Vince's den, and Vince is determined to get revenge. Fay shows some aptitude for jewellery design in art, and confesses to Miss Booth that she misses Mr. King. In the canteen, Robbie has a go at Zammo because Jackie keeps showing her engagement ring to people, and then Mrs. McClusky insists the ring mustn't be worn on her finger any more. Then Vince burst in on Trevor Cleaver, and ends up with a faceful of semolina. Roland has a heart to heart with Zammo, and asks a rather pertinent question - why does he want to get married? Banksie goes to a special needs school for his work experience interview. Gonch's donkey ride scheme comes to a sudden end with the appearance of the park keeper.

Episode 16
Vince's exploding kettle gives Gonch a fright... and an idea of how to deter Cleaver from coming into the secret den. Steven seems to be just getting mundane jobs on his work experience and wonders if Mrs Reagan gave a bad reference. When he goes back he meets wheelchair-bound Lucy. He's given the task to post a letter, but with the condition of using a motorized wheelchair. Impressed by her previous (but forced) astrology reading, Ziggy asks Calley for a prediction about the forthcoming soccer match against St. Josephs. Harriet falls ill, and a vet is called. Georgina thinks Helen has gone mad when she asks for a bible for Harriet, and starts reading passages about donkeys. In the football match against St. Joseph's, things go badly for Grange Hill when Ziggy gets fouled by Ant Jones. After meeting (and being beaten at snooker by) Lucy, Banksie has renewed enthusiasm for his work experience.

Episode 17
There's bad feeling when Ant turns up to apologize to Ziggy, after a bad tackle. The vet comes to investigate Harriet's illness and he points the finger of blame at food eaten during Gonch's donkey rides. Mr. Scott's registration is chaotic, as usual, with detentions handed out to latecomers. Things seem boring to the ex-Terrorhawks - could they really be missing Imelda? Gonch takes Trevor into his confidence, as they go into the den. He fools him into believing in the existence of the Grange Hill Ghost, helped by flickering lights. There's a student/teacher meeting to discuss matters like the much-hated report cards, but it ends in frustration, a huge rift apparent in attitudes.

Episode 18
Fay gets her exam results - only one pass - and agrees to sell some of her hand-made jewellery at the craft fair, sharing a table with Miss Booth. Zammo, on the other hand, has six passes and is pleased as punch. As part of Mr. Scott's scheme to show responsibility, Trevor's having a turn to take registration. He uses it as an opportunity to poke fun at Mr. ("Selina") Scott, but he goes too far, and Mr. Scott storms off. Trevor looks to his peers for some appreciation of his performance, but gets the cold shoulder instead. The girls try to placate their form teacher later, but their well-meant promise of being good is taken badly by Mr. Scott. The 6th form "alternative canteen" gets banned, but the canteen takes on board the alternative suggestions. Roland agrees to the idea of a sponsored slim, to raise funds for Danny Kendall's Aberdeen treatment. On Radio Grange Hill Freddy starts reading out from the illicitly obtained handbook, until Mr. Bronson storms in. The radio broadcasts a special horoscope reading for Trevor - to tell him he'll have an unpleasant encounter with a stranger. Later Trevor goes to the den with Ziggy, but in the dark has an encounter with the Grange Hill Ghost - a contraption prepared by Gonch, Vince, Hollo and Robbie. At the football, Ant Jones can't seem to win - Grange Hill are still sore for injuring Ziggy, and his own team think he's giving away points to his old friends.

Episode 19
Gonch and Hollo open a book on Roland's weight loss, offering 100-1 odds for him losing 5 stone. When they find he's doing rather better than would be good for their pockets, they start putting chocolate temptation in his path. Julia's dad blackmails her to infiltrate the next meeting to find out what Freddy Mainwaring is up to. The school handbook instruction "pupils must walk in the corridors at all times" is deliberately misinterpreted at Mr. Scott's registration. In Science, Mr. Scott dissects a heart, which is more than Trevor can bear. For once, the students' attention is completely held by Mr Scott. Banskie offers to take Lucy to the craft fair. Gonch and Robbie dress in white skirts for P.E, because it says so in the school handbook, but find to their horror their wily teacher insists on them following through, and playing outdoors in their outfits. Harriet's increasingly poor condition finally causes Mrs. McClusky to put her foot down - the donkey can't stay at Grange Hill any longer

Episode 20
Miss Booth and Fay set up their stall at the Craft Fair, while Jackie goes shopping with Julie for wedding dress material. Julia turns up with her dad, who is disapproving of Fay and her teacher's "Saturday job". Georgina turns up and has a row with Ant Jones about Harriet, who has to go to a donkey sanctuary. Laura confesses she feels uncomfortable around disabled people, and that's why she didn't want to accompany Banksie with Lucy. Back at school, Mr. Griffiths and Helen take Harriet out of the stable and into the van. They bid her farewell at a new donkey sanctuary in Essex. Zammo and his mother are also out shopping for wedding gear, but the sight of wedding dresses in the window is daunting. At the craft fair, Gonch turns up and is told in no uncertain terms that he must stop trying to tempt Roly with sweets, while he is dieting for the Danny Kendall fund. Fay's craft stall has an unexpected visitor - Mr. King arrives with a girlfriend in tow. When Fay realizes that they are together, she runs off in tears.

Episode 21
There's mutiny in the air over the school rulebook - from the staff as well. Trevor's still getting stick over both the business of the Grange Hill Ghost and his squeamishness in biology. Trevor compromises that he'll go along with an exorcism if the others cooperate in playing the humming game with Mr. Scott. Mrs. McClusky is angry about the rulebook, saying that it undermines her authority. In Mr. Scott's registration, Trevor goes too far, and Mr. Scott, angered beyond the limits of his self-control, advances on the boy. He pulls back his fist, but a call from one of the girls pulls him back from the precipice, and the situation is defused. A radio sit-in is organized as a protest against the rulebook. Danny Kendall makes a re-appearance and is told about the planned event, but seems to have no enthusiasm for the situation. Danny notices Julia go into Mr. Bronson, and works out that she been spying on her friends. She explains about the ski-trip, and claims not to have said anything of importance. Outside school, Ant waits for Georgina, with two accompanying St Joe boys. They notice Danny Kendall, whose car narrowly avoided them when Danny was being driven back to school. They start fighting him, but Ant comes to his rescue, and a fight ensues. When St Joe withdraw, they promise a proper fight the next day - Grange Hill versus St Joseph's - but where will Ant Jones's loyalties lie?

Episode 22
A sit in is planned for the radio station to protest about the hidden student profiles. Danny reveals Julia to be a spy, but they decide she can leak the wrong information to Mr. Bronson. Banskie and Zammo are out shopping when they bump into one of Banksie's old friends - now equipped with a wife and two young children. The responsibilities facing bridegroom-to-be Zammo are brought home sharply. At the same time, Jackie confesses her uncertainties to Fay. Back at the radio station, the protest starts, and pupils start barricading themselves in. Mrs. McClusky tries the olive branch of a private meeting, while Mr. Griffiths starts dismantling speakers. As soon as he does so, someone is following on behind, to reconnect them. The radio announces that journalists are at the gate, but it's a false alarm, to give time for the protesters to change to a secondary system in the 6th form building. An early lunch bell gives some success to the staff, and the protesters' own food supply has failed, due to an oversight in the tin-opener department. Even Gonch's cakes (a feeble attempt at profiteering) have become inedible. It seems a bit of a standoff, with Mr. Glover waiting outside, until St Joseph's boys arrive - Danny tells Mr. Bronson they are here to damage the cars, but of course they are here for the agreed fight. Realizing they have been duped, the staff return to the common room - but the protesters have left...

Episode 23
Helen causes a stir by wanting to play in the staff-versus-pupils cricket match, but the female staff also want a stab. There are repercussions from the radio sit in, with the ringleaders called together to hear Mrs. McClusky's views. She tells them that the whole system was in review, irregardless of the sit-in. Freddie does a fake Mr. Mackenzie broadcast on the radio, claiming the radio campaign was a success. Intending to hold an engagement party for Zammo and Jackie in the school canteen on Saturday, Fay and Julie sweet-talk Mr. Griffiths into believing they are holding a party in his honour, so he will open up the school. So as to give Cleaver another scare, Gonch plans a trick involving the "Grange Hill Ghost". They cut out a hole into a wall in the den, with Hollo hiding behind, and tell Cleaver that they are going to root out the ghost with the help of a vacuum cleaner. Trevor starts hoovering the walls - and a terrifying scream comes out. The bricks come away from the wall, and an arm grabs Ziggy - Trevor runs off in terror, running straight into Mr. Scott.

Episode 24
It's the day of the staff v pupils cricket match. Ant Jones turns up on an invite by Fred, but Mrs. McClusky forbids him to play - but he's allowed to be a runner for Ziggy. A party has been organized for Jackie and Zammo, but under the guise of being a celebration for Mr. Griffiths, who needed to be hoodwinked into opening the building on a Saturday. Outside the canteen, Hollo makes fun at Trevor about the ghost. In retaliation, Cleaver locks the door. Wheelchair-bound Perry's personal alarm brings Jackie to the rescue, but unfortunately she sees the surprise party banner. At the end of the match the score is a draw, which is bad news for Gonch Gardner who has to fork out winnings twice. Georgina breaks off with Ant, fed up with being ignored. Back at the canteen, it's time to tie up some loose ends - Roland's sponsored slim, and other fund raising are donated to the special care unit. Zammo makes a sudden announcement - to tell everyone that they aren't going to get married immediately, after all. Because of this, the way is open to placate Mr. Griffiths, but giving him the bottle originally destined for the couple. The staff and pupils form a giant conga, dancing their way outside, while Ant Jones walks dejectedly home.
