About to be a father twice over, Gary is feeling under pressure and starts smoking 1940s cigarettes in Yvonne's presence. Back in 1942 he places an advert in the Times saying he would like to buy Swiss watches. He tells Reg these are to drop behind enemy lines telling different times to confuse Hitler but they are to sell in his shop. A little man turns up with a case-load, followed by undercover cop Tommy Kingdom, whose cover Reg blows. The man escapes, having apparently picked Gary's pocket of the one watch he managed to buy but fortunately Phoebe got there first and hid it in the Wonderbra Gary bought her.

Gary is baby-sitting Yvonne's young nephew Arthur when he disappears. He suspects that the little boy may have wandered through the time warp back to 1942 and goes after him. Reg finds a small boy and Gary attempts to return him to the present but the child is unable to get through the portal. Of course he is not Arthur, who is found in the present and Yvonne goes off again, leaving Gary to mind him.

Whilst Yvonne is in Korea on business Gary arranges to stay on a farm in Kent with Phoebe for a week. Yvonne phones him to make sure all is well but the subterfuge is that Gary has a sore throat and cannot speak so Ron does all the talking. This almost goes awry when Gary's father George turns up but he is a keen philatelist and is bought off with some rare stamps from the 1940s and accepts Gary's story that he is going to the Hebrides. Gary and Phoebe do go to Kent but it never stops raining.

Episode 4

Donald is shot dead and his mother Dolly arrives for the funeral, Gary admitting to her that he is the father of Phoebe's child. After the wake Gary proposes to Phoebe and a tree is planted in Donald's memory. Fifty-five years later it is huge and a newly-divorced Ron, who has spent a night in the cells with a transvestite, having assaulted Stella's new man, relieves himself on it.

Episode 5
Phoebe and Gary go to Liverpool to see her grandma, Ron having told him to look out for his grandfather Albert who became a hero for saving a child in a fire. Gary does indeed meet Albert, who gets arrested. After returning to the present for advice from Ron and finding himself in a parallel universe where Ron is a vicar and Yvonne, who fails to recognize him, has a husband also named Ron, Gary goes back to 1942 and gets Albert released but Albert has no desire to be a hero so Gary rescues the kid and lets him take the credit.

Episode 6

As Gary argues with Phoebe over which school to send their unborn child, Margie, the mother of Reg's son Frankie, comes to the pub, complaining about the rough treatment she is receiving from her husband Jackie. After Margie and Frankie have met, Jackie arrives, looking for trouble and threatening Gary, whom he mistakes for Reg. Reg, however, knocks him out. Back in the present day Yvonne miscarries and is rushed to hospital.

Gary is stock-taking and Yvonne, who has quit her job to do an aromatherapy course, wants to help, which is annoying because Gary and Phoebe need to be at the church to plan their wedding. Eventually he gets away and goes back to the Royal Oak but the wedding looks like being a shambles as there is no best man.

Episode 8

On the eve of his wedding Gary attends two stag nights - one arranged by Ron and another set up by visiting Canadian pilots at the Royal Oak. Gary gets very drunk and almost ends up heading out to sea with the flyers but returns to the present in a hung-over state. To afford him a lie-in Yvonne turns off the alarm clock, causing him to over-sleep when he should be at the church getting married to Phoebe.
Episode 9

Having overslept Gary is late arriving at church; the wedding party has left and a funeral is in progress. After being given the cold shoulder by Phoebe - and Reg - he says he is sorry and the wedding does go ahead, followed by a knees-up in the Royal Oak afterwards, though Gary and Phoebe wonder if their relationship will change now that they are married.

Episode 10

Reg is painting the nursery for Gary, who needs some wartime fivers to pay him with. Ron agrees to print some for him if Gary can get him a date with Kate, a friend of Yvonne's, which Gary does. Unfortunately Ron starts to tell Kate that Gary travels through time so Gary has to compensate by telling her that Ron is such a scream he will say anything for a laugh.

Episode 11

Against Gary's advice, Yvonne has decided to go into business with a man called Clive, to promote her new health drink, but he is a swindler who runs off with her investment and so she and Ron, whose business has also gone bust, get drunk together. Gary learns that, at about the time Phoebe is due to give birth, the church bells rang out to celebrate General Montgomery's North African victories and resolves to be present at the birth. It's as well that he is because the midwife has got drunk and disappeared leaving Gary and Margie to deliver the baby - just as the bells start to ring. The child is a boy - Michael Montgomery Sparrow.
