Less than happily married to Yvonne, television repair man Gary Sparrow walks down Duckett's passage in London's East End and winds up in the Royal Oak, which he thinks is a war-time theme pub. In fact he has gone back in time to 1940. Initially mistaken for a spy, he cheers the customers during an air-raid by singing 1970s pop songs which he says he has written and saves the landlord's life by giving him the kiss of life, which he claims to have learned in America. He is attracted to the landlord's daughter Phoebe, but she is married to a serving soldier.

Episode 2

Gary is going for an interview for promotion at work and Yvonne wants him to wear a suit but he is not keen. Eventually he buys a second hand, very old-fashioned suit. He fails to get the promotion but he looks more at home when he goes back down Duckett's Passage to see Phoebe. He also tells his friend Ron about his experience.

Episode 3

Yvonne, preoccupied with her Open University course and her nephew's christening, is angry with Gary for spending a hundred and twenty pounds on a set of books about bombing raids in World War Two. This does, however, alert him to a raid which will take place that night and he is able to reach the Royal Oak and warn people, spending the night in the air-raid shelter with Phoebe. The police are suspicious that he knew the raid was coming. Yvonne is even more suspicious that he stayed out all night.

Episode 4

Yvonne is annoyed with Gary's obsession with the war, especially when she finds the suit-case full of memorabilia that he takes with him back to the Royal Oak. He gets Ron, a printer, to forge him identity papers and is prepared to take Ron back with him but only Gary can time travel. Gary is worried that Ron may have told Yvonne about Phoebe but it's a false alarm.

Episode 5

Although Gary vows to spend more time with Yvonne and give up time travel, discovery of an old lady called Phoebe Sparrow makes him suspect that he may have married the Royal Oak barmaid and he goes back in time to find out. However, he gets run over and wakes up in hospital with a broken arm. To cover for him Ron tells Yvonne he was arrested at a football match in Lithuania.

Episode 6

After more complaints from Yvonne about his wartime obsession, Gary, armed with forged period bank notes, makes what he reckons will be his final trip back to the past, making a stock exchange killing and taking Phoebe to dinner at the Savoy. The King is visiting the area and the visit is being filmed. Consequently, Yvonne is surprised to see a familiar face when the archive film is shown on television.
