Aiden's empathic powers are showing, as he senses every mail to Melinda even before she reads it. The team resolves to prove the ghost's belief in the 'Sally Stitch' chain-letter misplaced to make her stop punishing people who fail to send it on.

It becomes clear that the figure is in fact the ghost of Sean Flannery, who fell to his death fleeing on one of the horses he had cared for as stable-boy at Caroline's strict father's farm when they were young, forbidden lovers, planning to elope, cloaked in Halloween costumes.

Jim and his mentor, Dr. Forrest Morgan, surprisingly lose a patient in surgery and are haunted by a girl ghost. It's about med student Tina Clark, who went missing after an affair with Morgan. Eli is passed over for promotion by college president Josh Bedford, who is haunted by a ghost while watching over his dying mother and discovered Tina's night job as stripper.

Melinda sets out to untangle the truths and identities involved (including that of a girl ghost) before any needless deaths occurs - not easy after the troubled man slips from the hospital psych ward.

To have access to all the university libraries, including the exclusive Copeland Wing, Ned makes a bid at becoming an occult professor's newest T.A. but discovers that she's haunted. All wonder if it's the professor's eight-years-dead fiancé who's keeping his identity secret, but Ned's appraisal of a clue points out that they don't even have the gender of the ghost correct. Reliances on a Ouija board to communicate irritates Melinda but it works, along with an additional forecast of an impending death that she takes very seriously.

Connection to a war surplus dealer has Melinda's shop decked out in military items for sale, but it also starts a series of nightmares where Melinda sets off a landmine. Investigation brings to light the dealer scavenging an abandoned military base, where an interest in bombs brings about the death of a youngster. Meanwhile, President Bedford witnesses Eli's and Ned's system for hiding the Book of Changes and makes a play for it on the behalf of the shadows, taking a viable bomb from the abandoned base. As the boy makes Melinda and Eli aware of Pres. Bedford's actions, Eli loses his police contact, and Pres. Bedford makes his move for the book.

Having survived Pres. Bedford's murder attempt and fearing for Ned's safety, Delia wants no more involvement with Melinda's paranormal activities. That doesn't stop Ned from helping Melinda and Eli deal with a multiple haunting at an abandoned house (much against Delia's wishes). Despite an unusual lack of informational sources, they pit themselves against the powerful, wheelchair-bound ghost of a fake medium with a special attachment to the shadows and a hunger for bringing ghost children into her home. And that doesn't cover all the ghosts involved.

Aiden comes home in a soaked rain coat and Melinda makes him take off the muddy shoes. Jim comes home and tells Melinda he really wants to take her out. The nanny down the street agrees to baby-sit Aiden. When they are alone in the house, Aiden refuses to do a volcano puzzle, but agrees to play hide and seek. Aiden goes and hides inside a crawl space and it locks from the outside. The nanny calls the 9-1-1 to rescue him from the crawl space. Melinda goes to visit Ben's mom, Sarah, who says nothing but nice things about Kelly, even though the house almost burnt down and one of her kids had to be rushed to the hospital. Eli goes to the park and talks to local nannies who share some dirt on Kelly. Aiden tells Eli that Kelly smelt like beer while they re at the park. Melinda and Jim go and meet with one of Kelly's past clients, Gill Bradley, whose wife is the ghost that Melinda has been seeing. Ghost wife Laura shows up and denies that Kelly got along with Laura. Gill apparently has no clue about how Laura felt about Kelly. When his daughter drops a doll, Melinda goes to help pick it up and gets a vision of a woman drinking and Gil's daughter burning her hand. The next morning Jim finds out that Laura was the one with the drinking problem, not Kelly. As they are talking, Kelly is babysitting the neighbor's kids next door babysitting and the car starts to drive off on its own. Sarah realizes that Melinda was right and fires Kelly. Laura shows Melinda a vision of Gill getting the same tattoo as a woman - a unity symbol. Melinda is trying to piece things together when Kelly walks in to confront Melinda about what she said to Sarah. Melinda notices that it wasn't Laura and Gil that got the unity tattoos, it was Kelly and Gil. That night, Melinda is about to give Aiden a bath when she starts chocking on the Clorox. It is a vision that Laura wanted her to see because she believes that Kelly poisoned her to steal her husband. Laura goes to Gill's house and spills the ammonia and chloride to kill them both. She then goes and tells Melinda that they will both pay for their mistake. Melinda rushes to Gil's house and finds both of them unconscious on the floor. Eli comes and helps get them out. At the hospital Kelly explains that they were leaving in a polygamist lifestyle. She got away to be with a normal family and they formed a union. Laura thought that they were trying to have an affair, but really he was just talking about getting Laura into rehab. That night Jim and Melinda have their make-up date night - and Aiden makes them a special dinner

Three college boys, seeking their way at night to a party through the woods, come upon and run into trouble at a deserted barn, where one disappears. At a terrified survivor's request, Eli and Melinda look into the matter and soon, finding not just the recently vanished student at issue but an elusive ghost attached to an eleven-year-old unsolved murder/kidnapping, bring in the police to help. Almost too late, Melinda learns of deceptions that put her life at risk over the matter of two million in missing ransom money.

As Melinda's visions intensify, making her unable to distinguish reality, Jim, Ned and Delia discuss what course of actions to take to best help her. Meanwhile, as Carl talks Melinda towards ending Aiden's ability to see ghosts and beyond (for his own protection), Melinda confronts what seems to be the angry, impossibly disembodied spirit of a living man, who tells her "the light" isn't what she thinks it's cracked up to be, all of which makes her increasingly unsure of herself.

Melinda's decision to tell Aiden that ghosts aren't real comes at the price of her not being able to distinguish between the energies of ghosts and people, making her not the easy-to-live-with person all knew her to be. As she fiercely ignores Carl (believing him to be under the influence of Shadows), Carl turns to Eli (who can't to speak past a bad tooth). As the ghosts of marching children, lead by a sarcastic 13-year-old prankster, invade Jim's hospital, Melinda falls under Shadow influence. Carl must get Aiden to declare war.
