Lady Sarah,her credit cut off by her husband,is living with Garrow and learning to cook for him. The young lawyer's reputation attracts the custom of Ann Hadfield,whose discontented ex-soldier husband James shot at the king and is charged with treason. Hadfield claims he had no murderous intent but wanted to be a martyr to provoke rebellion,prompting Garrow to plead insanity for his client. After a visit to Bedlam to learn about lunacy Garrow submits that it may strike the sufferer intermittently,to the horror of the establishment figures who fear it will reflect on the king's own condition. However,after evidence from Anne and a shock reaction from Hadfield,Garrow wins his case whilst Sarah sets about taking legal steps to retrieve her child.

Irish weavers Cathal Foley and Ciaran Quinn are accused of destroying looms at the mercer's who recently made them redundant,as well as belonging to a union. Garrow demolishes the main prosecution witness but when Cathal is persuaded to turn King's Evidence against his brother-in-law in return for a pardon,Garrow must make his most impassioned speech to ensure that justice is done. Southouse,despite contracting typhus from his visits to Newgate,discovers a precedent case that may help Lady Sarah regain custody of her son and puts up the funding for Silvester to represent her.

Philanthropic abolitionist Mr. Fullerton engages Garrow to prosecute Trinidadian governor Picton for falsely imprisoning and torturing Luisa,his free-born servant whom he wrongly accused of theft. Corrupt Lord Melville who has vested interests in slavery tells Garrow that if he loses the case he will persuade Sir Arthur Hill to give up custody of his son but honest Garrow refuses the deal and wins by calling Picton's chief torturer to testify against him. Despite a spirited display by Silvester Lady Sarah loses her custody battle but Mr Southouse,dying of typhus,craftily shakes Hill's hand,knowing what should happen, whilst Sarah snatches the child,Samuel,from her husband's mistress Lady Henrietta,who does nothing to stop her.

Hubert Nicholson is made a scapegoat for killing an elderly man at a polling day riot but,having exposed the paid witnesses as liars and getting Hubert acquitted, Garrow goes after the corrupt magistrate and chief constable who were the real killers and who engineered the riot to stop voters electing the liberal Charles James Fox. The case concluded Fox comes to court to congratulate Garrow. Meanwhile Lady Sarah discovers a skeleton in the closet of Lord Melville,who has demoted her husband to a far-flung menial post. She and Garrow do a deal with Hill which will expose his political enemy in return for custody of Samuel,after which Garrow learns that he is also to be a father.
