Miami Mural Fest

Since 2017, the Miami Mural Fest 66 in Northeast Oklahoma has made an impact on the town that goes beyond art for art's sake. OETA's Gallery America spends a day in the life of this April festival - taking in art, music, food vendors and a car show right on Route 66 -- to find out how the dozen new murals are bringing back a sense of pride to a town that struggled to find that not long ago.

Oklahoma Outback: Western Oklahoma Road Trip

Gallery America's art roadtrip of the Oklahoma Outback and Western Oklahoma aims to expand the understanding of a region often seen only from the interstate. Aiming for backroads, the hosts visit art co-ops in Clinton and burgeoning mural districts in Woodward. Local lore is turned too often (from windmills to Bruce Goff and WPA-era Kiowa murals) as are natural attractions like the Black Mesa.

Slow Ride: Lowriding Oklahoma City

This tradition is a way of life, where car clubs meet for weekly cruises for friends and family. On the show, car clubs like Rollerz Only 'hit the switches' (aka the cars' hydraulic systems) to make the cars dance -- and explains how lowriding is a positive for all generations.

Oklahoma City's Ma Der Lao has won national praise for reviving Laotian cuisine. And Oklahoma's Prairie Artisan Ales craft brewery shares the cartoon-inspired plan of their beer cans.

Robert Peterson: Stamp of Approval

Lawton, Oklahoma artist Robert Peterson's oversized portraits have been collected by stars and shown around the world. But his latest work is found at any US post office. It tributes writer Ernest J Gaines, as part of the US Postal Service's Black Heritage Series. On Gallery America, Robert explains how he got into art and how he hopes his work tells the truth of Black America not always told.

Gallery America, of Oklahoma PBS member station OETA, meets him to find out why. To answer, Peter reenacts a moment in his career where his life's purpose becomes clear. The episode also revisits Oklahoma City comedians.

Bobby Cornelsen: Hair Apparent

Bobby Cornelsen painted "Joan Jett 4 Prez" on his garage facing I-40 in Weatherford, Oklahoma. The goal was to simply make people smile. Since then, over 20 million vehicles have passed by -- some honk, some wave, some likely turn up the radio. Twenty years later, a local art professor wonders if Bobby's message is actually art. OETA's Gallery America meets the man behind the message to find out.
