1964. George has always treated Barbara like she was something special, which may be why she entered the Miss Blackpool Belle beauty pageant. But that experience is the final straw in showing her that her current path, which includes being engaged to butcher Aiden, will lead to a life of being a domestic nobody in Blackpool. So she picks up to leave all that she knows behind her to move to London in that goal to be a somebody, although without a clear vision of what being that somebody actually is. Working in the millinery department of Lewis Peters Department Store and meeting Marjorie and a slew of young women who are much like her, Barbara at least discovers what she thinks she wants to do to make that name for herself, and tries to parlay her position at the store to reach her goal, all behind the back of critical Miss Sykes, her boss. The harder she tries, she does take some steps forward, but takes as many steps even further back. It may be when she least expects it that she may get a break, but that break is not without its own obstacles and heartaches.

In what few professional opportunities in the realm of show business she is given, Barbara believes each needs a good dose of her comic ability to elevate the situation. Those opportunities include a call back for the new television show under the Comedy Playhouse banner, that call back despite she being caught in a lie which did not sit well with some in the room, especially Beryl, the Casting Director. And even in those opportunities like the Comedy Playhouse one, Barbara will have to be different things to different people. Further, if she does impress enough in that call back, there is still a second round in meeting with network brass, name Ted Sargent who has yet a different mentality than the creatives. As Barbara goes through these professional issues, she still has real life to deal with, including earning money to pay the rent, and handling two issues from her Blackpool past.

With her dilemma between the show and her father, Barbara decides to stay in London to film the show before heading back to Blackpool to visit with her ailing father, she making that decision before knowing his prognosis. Even with that decision, she finds that Mother Nature causes some problems making filming not as smooth as she and the rest of the show's team would have wished. They not only have to awaiting critical reception to the pilot as well as ratings, the ultimate decision about where the show goes next if it survives is Ted. What ultimately happens with the show leads to tow with the team growing closer together.

Barbara is riding the crest of the wave with the success of the show, acting on it which is made all the more easy with her high profile romance with Clive in art imitating life or visa versa. As such, many are speculating whether marriage is in the cards for the two of them, especially as she spends most nights at his apartment. The one person who does not like the publicity is Ted, who does not see business and pleasure, especially in something so high profile, mixing. One other person quietly seething is Dennis, although Edith can tell there are feelings at least from Dennis' side for Sophie. In the process, Barbara is exposed to other possibilities for the next step in her career, which may not be quite what Brian had in mind especially at this stage. Meanwhile, Marjorie is trying to expand her life experience, which takes a turn from what she had planned. And Diane makes another career change, this time out of print media into something more visible.

Sophie has been suspended from the show for what ended up being her public outburst against Clive, the decision a unilateral one by Ted in she contravening network policy in using one specific word considered vulgar. Publicly, her not being on the show is less well defined with the official release only stating it due to a sudden illness. Nonetheless, Sophie and Brian have to figure out what their next step will be both with regard to the show and if there are any other opportunities, the latter which is made all the more difficult in insiders in the business knowing the truth, while Patsy has her own "next step" for Sophie. The creatives also are placed in a difficult situation in how to continue with the show without Sophie, Dennis, Bill and Tony who all blame Clive, while Clive may come to a realization of his life with regard to Sophie. In the process, Dennis and Tony also come to some realizations about their personal lives both in conjunction with their respective wives.

"Jim and Barbara" is back on track with Clive's very public proposal of marriage to Sophie and she accepting in return, there only one more show, the finale, of series one left to go. Despite his feelings for Sophie, Dennis also returns to the show to finish off the series on what is hopefully a high with a script centered more on the Barbara character. After the show, they can only wait to see if there is a series two and beyond. In the process, Sophie comes to a realization about her current life, from the work to the trappings of celebrity off which Clive seems to thrive. What Sophie decides to do about this realization is affected by a visit from someone from her past, and taking cues from Diane and Marjorie, while Clive can see the writing on the wall if there were to be a series two. Solely looking at their relationship from a professional perspective, Dennis, with Tony and Bill beside him, can also see what the future holds for Sophie.
