An 11 Year-old named Eddie Huang and his family move to Orlando in order for his father to run his brand new restaurant. Things quickly don't go well when both Eddie and his mother, Jessica, have trouble fitting in with the people of Orlando and have to make the best of it.

Eddie hoped straight AAs would get their demanding parents off the boys' back, but lacking an honors program to 'challenge them properly', Jessica insists on tutoring. Given there's no private school around and her stingy meddling drives staff and clients crazy in the restaurant, Louis suggests she tutors them privately at home. However things don't go perfectly at the now too liberally run restaurant, especially with non-paying runners, and Jessica smells a rat on both fronts.

Firstborn 'rebel' Eddie's triumph over joining his brothers' straight AAs record turns bitter when their impossible to please, ambition-obsessed mother Jessica concludes the US high-school fails to challenge them enough, hence wants a Chinese after hours cramming program (CLC). As none is around, husband Louis, who fears her stingy bitching at his Ranch restaurant staff and clients will chase both, convinces her to switch to a home school version. After Eddie smells a rat, she takes the class to the Ranch, to everyone's despair, yet proves useful handling a scam party.

The Huang couple desperately tries to appear successful for a visit from his former braggart boss Steve Chen and his wife, Jessica's sister Connie, with her mother. Eddie is disappointed in his eagerly expected, previously super-cool cousin Justin, even chooses to stop excluding his kids brothers. The parents couples rival, the men in business, the women for favorite daughter status, but both fall trough, which finally enables a truth time reconciliation.

Desperate to win friends at school, Eddie tries to trump cool rich kid Brock's toys and luring his gang for a sleepover to the Huang home by promising a dirty movie, not 'just' a magazine, although none of them even knows what is dirty. Paranoid from watching late night TV, Jessica expects sexual predators everywhere, so the restaurant must hold a sexual harassment seminar. She does such a traumatizing job that Louis must hire professional Dusty Nugget, but he's a dubiously reformed 'veteran'. However his training video saves Eddie's social neck, at least short-term, and his father ends up forced to have 'the talk', which he does his way. As the kid brothers are shoved off to grandma, she picks them clean in poker 'lessons'.

Eddie takes a job at the family restaurant to earn money for a new video game, and Jessica searches for a job of her own.

Louis proudly presents a billboard for the restaurant and an invitation for a country club society fund raiser, but the attention also brings above board how he stole the ranch concept from the Golden Saddle franchise chain, which even Jessicz didn't know, and the owner seeks revenge by luring away Mitch. Desperate to meet 'cool' neighbor girl Nicole who ignores everyone on the school bus, Eddie literally loses his pants. He convinces mother to start car pooling, but Nicole doesn't join and is hired to babysit the Huang boys, another opportunity to impress her he messes up in an ugly way.

Clumsy waiter Mitchell having been bought by his authentic competitor, Louis hires real cowboy and experienced waiter Wyat, whose lasso tricks enchant the clients, yet misses his friend, feels jealous of the competent charmer and wants to fire him, but eve when Mitch agrees to return, neither has the guts to sack 'too perfect' Wyat. Desperate for a cultural peer, Eddie is delighted when he gets to welcome a Chinese classmate, until he finds Philip was adopted and raised by Jews and has nothing in common with his Chinese heritage or his rap age taste. Jessica however thinks cello-playing A-student Philip the ideal role model, even agrees to let them attend a concert together, but Philip's own sneaky side kicks in.

Eddie is desperate enough to become cool Nicole's buddy to accept being her beautician Guinea pig, including an excruciating ear piercing, even though his schoolmates seem far from impressed, but paternal advice helps. Louis joins the kid sons' SciFi game. Jessica wants to cash in on her bargaining skills as real estate agent, but is so jealous of the record saleswoman that she freezes at the exam and keeps silent, but Louis finds out and gets her to try again.

Louis annoys Jessica by failing to get jealous at a visit from their study buddy Oscar Chow, her first steady boyfriend, instead enjoying his generosity. While his nerd brothers prepared the science fair for months, Eddie only notices now it's in a few days, is clueless to build something as expected by family tradition and hopes to use Evan's chicken pocks to either get sick too and be excused or infect Emory and steal a finished project, which both fail, yet yield a surprising alternative. The couple learns Oscar is really gay and actually always was interested in Louis.

Jessica's superstitions get the best of her when she sells a house with the address 44 West 44th Street - the number 4 being bad luck in Chinese culture. At the urging of the new school counselor, Eddie decides to run for school president, but Jessica's bad luck gets the best of him too when a white lie spirals out of control.

Louis and Jessica get pressured into volunteering at the kids' schools because of budget cuts. Eddie sees a whole other side of his dad when Louis coaches the basketball team, while Emery and Evan see a side of Jessica they wish they hadn't when she grudgingly takes on producing their school play.

Stingy Louis refuses to accept a country club invitation, a prized success trophy for Jessica, until shown the business dealing potential, even joins secretly when she turns against it, fearing the kids are loosing their roots. The kids are forced to Mandarin class and to cut back on 'sissy' American things in favor of Chinese traditions, which drives Eddie desperate as he must even relinquish playing Jamaica, which he got by bribe, in favor of China, yet defends the he country's coolness when his mates casually bag on it.
