Hester is pleased when Emma rings to say that she and Peter will be getting married after all and even happier when, for their twenty-fourth wedding anniversary, William takes her to the hotel where he first proposed to her. Unfortunately on arrival they see Sonia's husband with another woman and, to avoid awkwardness, retreat to their room where they have to eat sandwiches, rather than a full dinner. Next day they leave early to avoid the couple but when they arrive home Sonia has a surprise in store for them.

Hackles arise when William notices that Hester's fencing instructor--a known Casanova--is paying her quite a bit of attention. Hester, however, sees no cause for alarm. Only when she lowers her guard does she realize William might have a point.

Hester is organizing the church bazaar and the evening concert, AND she will be performing 'Three Little Maids' from 'The Mikado' with Sonia and another woman at the concert. When the pianist falls ill Nancy replaces her, but when the third Little Maid drops out at the last minute, William must save the night.

Hester has taken to keeping a very full journal and when Sonia informs her that Mr Birch has left his wife to run off with Mrs Roberts she considers writing scandalous exposes for magazine publication. She also hits on the idea of trying to make Nancy jealous by seeing Guy with another woman so William's secretary poses as his lady-friend though Nancy is not fooled. After everybody has gone home Emma rings to say the wedding is on after all.
Episode 5

William must employ a temporary secretary, Miss Turner, but she is not up to it. He is also having coordination problems when he switches to contact lenses--not that Hester notices the difference--and eventually, having accidentally taken the wrong briefcase from a conference, goes back to his glasses. However, this mishap and Hester's efficient turn posing as his secretary, win him a valuable new client.
Episode 6

The wedding is on and the Fields host Peter's wealthy parents Margaret and Henry who have flown in from Kuala Lumpur. She is imperious, he appears hen-pecked. Hester is nervous and forgets to turn the oven on for dinner so Sonia has to go to the take-away for their meal though Hester gets away with it. Next day they drive to Cumbria for the wedding, along with a pram on the roof-rack, which actually gets to the church ahead of them.
