Hester and William Fields' daughter Emma has moved in with her boyfriend Peter, leaving them alone except for Hester's acerbic mother Nancy in their granny flat, and she has heard that her long-estranged husband, Hester's father Guy, wants to return to her. Hester, an accomplished cook, gets a job at a local restaurant. then needs William's help when things don't go as planned.

Hester is starting to feel her age, having been turned down for a sales assistant job in a boutique as being too old. She also ricks her back at her keep fit class. To prove a point she dons a wig and trendy clothes and gets the job - though she turns it down. Her new look also finds her daughter's boyfriend Peter finding her very attractive.

After years of criticizing William's fishing trips Hester agrees to go with him on one to see what pleasure he derives from it. At the same time Hester's father Guy, divorced from his second wife, turns up, determined to win back Nancy, who does not share his enthusiasm. Nancy accompanies the Fields on the fishing trip to escape Guy but when he 'accidentally' turns up an unusually romantic reconciliation - of sorts - follows.

Keen to impress a prospective client visiting from the Middle East, William enlists Hester's help to ensure the trip goes off without a hitch. The Fields soon discover that the man has an unusual understanding of mixing business with pleasure.

Surrounded by bills for car repairs, work to Nancy's flat and high rates William decides he and Hester should sell and move to a smaller house in a cheaper area. Guy is thrilled as this will render Nancy homeless and force her to move in with him. Hester however is sad to leave her beloved house with its happy memories so she enlists Nancy and Sonia from next door's help in making the house unsellable.

With a food critic from the local paper due at the café where she works a nervous Hester is keen to try out new recipes on William, who does not appreciate it, especially when she stays up all night to cook them. Then daughter Emma rings to say that she is pregnant. Hester feels Emma and boyfriend Peter should marry immediately and both she and William are perturbed when Peter tells them that they have no intention to wed. At least the food critic gives Hester a good review,
