Emma and Peter are staying but not speaking, because of his mysterious evening absences. Hester is arrested after the rent cheque bounces and she hits out at the visiting bailiffs, and William is done for speeding as he rushes to the police station to comfort her. Fortunately Peter's secret - he has been taking French lessons - coupled with his skills as a lawyer, saves the day.

Hester agrees to act as courier for a bus load of Brits who are thinking of buying French properties on a tour organized by the mayor's garlic-breathing secretary Madame Lapine, who still carries a torch for him. Hester allows the passengers, including the annoying self-styled Lothario Cyril Ormerod, to use the Fields' toilet. This is a bad idea as the house's volatile plumbing system is about to erupt.

When Margaret and Henry Richardson arrive unannounced for a weekend stay Hester sees an escape clause - a caravan holiday she won in the local raffle. She and William take to the road but when she gets out to post a card William, believing she is asleep, drives off, leaving her in the rain in her night-dress. Eventually they meet up and decide to go to Paris - where they run into the Richardsons.

With their wedding anniversary approaching Hester makes it clear she has no wish for a surprise party. William, however, has other ideas and enlists the help of Emma and Chantal. Then Hester decides she would like to prepare a surprise party, putting Emma and Peter on the spot when she phones them. Come the big night William's secretive behaviour annoys Hester but the surprise party is worth it, complete with a visit from son Tom all the way from New Zealand.

When Hester gives Marie-Christine a hundred lines for sticking out her tongue in class, Dax retaliates by setting off his bird-scarers each night, and everybody asks Hester to back down. Meanwhile, William agrees to rent their London home to Emma and Peter - if Hester will give in. When she doesn't, William and Peter each write out and hand in the lines themselves.

William learns that getting fired in French sounds just the same as it does in English. The Fields know they can always go back to England if the worst comes to the worst. When they learn who's renting the farmhouse next door, it soon does.
