Long Leggedy Beasties and Things That Go Bump in the Night

The Fields are kept awake at night by a local farmer whose automatic scarecrow keeps firing shots so they set out to silence it, leading to a confrontation with the farmer. William decides to take a protest to Monsieur Dax, the mayor, but the mayor turns out to be the farmer. At the same time Hester takes a job as a part-time teacher, leading Monsieur Dax to ask for private tuition for his daughter. Hester agrees, on condition he stops the firing.

Inside Story

The Fields prepare for an interview with 'Paris Match' magazine as a typical English couple living in France. Hester thinks William should buy a wig for the photo session but he insists they just look casual - not that it stops him buying a bow tie whilst Hester upstages him in a cocktail dress. When the interview seems rather bland the Trendles from next door arrive with lies about their friendship with the Royal family and it looks as if they may end up as the interviewees. Hester however knows just how to put a stop to that.

Sheep May Safely Graze

After Hester falls foul of the mayor for giving his daughter low marks at school William saves the situation by getting drunk with him. Next day they attend the village fete where Hester wins a leg of mutton in a raffle- though it turns out to be a live sheep. She wants to keep it as a pet but William and the Trendles disagree, leading to William having another drinking session with Dax to persuade him to put the sheep in his flock.

Home and Away

Hester persuades William that they should join Emma and Peter on a canal boat holiday but it is not very enjoyable, due to persistent rain and Hester's inability to play I-Spy in French so the Fields are heartily glad when a family emergency calls Peter away and they can spend the night in a hotel. Returning home they discover that the marquis, from whom they are renting their house, intends to sell it and the Trendles are keen to buy. Hester makes a decision on the spot - she and William will sell their house in England and buy it themselves.

Whilst Hester teaches her class to do the Hokey-Cokey William arranges for a mortgage with his bank manager only to find that the Trendles have gazumped them. But then the Trendles get gazumped and the marquis decides to sell the house at auction. He claims that it is structurally sound and worthy of a good price until Madame Remouleux's attempt to do the Hokey-Cokey proves otherwise.

William wins the respect of the locals when he proves adept at the French game of boules. His newly demonstrated skills not only allow him to win the game, but also to secure for Hester the thing she treasures about all else about their life in France.

Noel Noel

The Fields invite Emma and Peter to spend Christmas with them but they have made other arrangements. Therefore, to William's astonishment, Hester decides that she will treat their French friends ad neighbours to a typically English Christmas. She teaches the children in the school where she works to sing carols and makes a huge Christmas pudding - which certainly mystifies the locals. The family finally make it for the Fields' first Noel in their new home.
