William is fed up with commuting so that when his best client recommends him to French businessman Henri Nadal for a job in France he is tempted, though he feels that he may be too old for a change. However after Hester has had a chat with friendly estate agent Chantal and the Fields discovers that the local bar does shepherd's pie his mind is made up - the move will go ahead.

Back in England the Fields break their news to Emma and Peter, who are vehemently against the move but, following a call from Chantal who has found the perfect house for them, Hester and William travel to France, getting lost as they look for the house. It does however prove to be ideal and they meet their English neighbours, the Trendles, and the eccentric concierge. Emma also phones to give her mother her blessing.

A Moving Experience

Moving out of their home in England proves a trying experience for William. Getting to their new house in France turns out to be just as tough--especially after Hester misplaces their passports and William forgets which side of the road to drive on.

Où Est La Plumber De Ma Tante?

On William's first day at work the Fields find themselves without water, requiring Hester to communicate with a plumber in French. She also has trouble adjusting to the long French lunch hours and coping with an amorous baker. Then the plumber gets bitten by a rat, which leads to Hester interrupting William's first business meeting and a visit from the rat-catcher, who is also the marquis who owns most of the village.

Who's Been Eating My Porridge?

Hester determines to cook a roast beef dinner for William's boss Henri and his wife but her poor French makes shopping difficult whilst William's efforts to take charge of a cheese from the ferry lead to its almost being impounded - and the seagulls eat his lunch. When the cooker breaks down Hester uses the Trendles' next door but they come home early, assume the meal is for them and eat it - ending up with indigestion.

As Hester and William prepare to host Emma and Peter for the weekend, the marquis invites them to a party to celebrate the bi-centenary of the revolution. The visitors have a run-in with the Trendles, who aren't invited and aren't happy when the noisy merry-makers wake them returning home. The visit is cut short when Emma phones the babysitter and hears that he is ill.
