Having returned to his native Seattle after living for many years in Boston, psychiatrist Frasier Crane is still settling in. He now hosts a radio call-in show, something his psychiatrist brother Niles frowns upon, but all in all is quite happy. Niles has bad news for him however about their father Martin, a retired policeman who has a dodgy hip after being shot on duty. Martin had a bad fall in his bathroom and it's obvious he can no longer live alone. A reluctant Frasier agrees that his somewhat cantankerous dad can move in with him. Martin's dog Eddie is part of the package as well. Niles offers to help out by sharing the cost of a physical therapist and Martin decides he want to hire Daphne Moon, a slightly wacky Brit who claims to be somewhat psychic.

Frasier and Martin aren't getting along very well but what he really misses the most is a little solitude where he can just read and be by himself. No matter how hard he tries however, he just can't get any peace and quiet. Frasier is set in his ways and even when Martin tries to make him breakfast, he complains. Convinced that Martin doesn't even appreciate the sacrifice he's made, he tells his dad it's not working out.

Meanwhile, Niles' (David Hyde Pierce) solution is to bring his wife's crazy aunt, Patrice (guest star Kathleen Noone of "Knot's Landing") to meet Martin in hopes that they will hit it off.

Unfortunately, Bulldog overhears Frasier's speculation and takes it upon himself to resign after ferociously telling off the station manager, Ned Miller, played by Emmy-nominee John Glover ("An Early Frost," "Nutcracker: Money, Madness and Murder"). Jay Leno ( "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno") provides the voice of Don, a caller with a weight problem who has difficulty hiding the fact that he's calling from a car phone in a fast food order lane.

Frasier's plans for a merry Christmas with Frederick, Martin and Niles are derailed after Lilith cancels the plans to take Frederick to Austria. Already angry, Frasier then has a bitter argument with Martin in the days before Christmas, and Frasier agrees to do the Christmas Day shift at the radio station, where he and Roz are forced to endure the most depressing show ever. Just when things do not seem to be able to get any better, Frasier is humbled by a demonstration of human kindness from an unexpected quarter.

Frasier takes part in a bachelor auction, where he is bought by a model, Kristina. Frasier, hoping to have sex with her, arranges an impressive dinner for them at his apartment. Kristina arrives at Frasier's apartment telling him that she has some quick business to take care of before their date and needs him to look after her daughter Renetta. Reluctant, Frasier realizes that his chances of getting sex from Kristina are better if he does this minor act of kindness. Frasier, always the psychiatrist, learns from Renetta that her mother is not a good person and neglects her often, causing him to rethink his beautiful date. It turns out to be a lie played by a vengeful teen to ruin her mothers night as Kristina truly is a good mother. She leaves, leaving Frasier stunned at how easy he was played. Meanwhile Daphne accidentally buys Bulldog, however her uneasiness quickly gives way to enjoyment when he splashes out for their date. On their way home from a game, a drunk Daphne picks a fight with a rude man in a traffic jam, who then rips Bulldog out of the limo and beats him while she drives away.

After Roz is scammed out of $10 by a street con, Frasier claims to always be able to spot a criminal, so Martin challenges him to a test: several of Martin's friends come over to play cards, including one ex-con. Frasier wins if he can spot the con, but he fails completely, losing the bet. Before the ex-con is revealed, Daphne agrees to go on a date with him. Martin is concerned and tries to forbid the date, but Frasier accuses Martin of being judgmental. Later, when Niles hears about the date, he is concerned for Daphne's safety and convinces Frasier to go check on her/rescue her. At the dive bar the ex-con took her to, Daphne is scamming a pool player, running the table and taking his money. It turns out she already threw her date out of the bar for getting fresh. Frasier and Niles show up and get in trouble with one of the locals, who demands money they do not have. Daphne wagers her winnings on making an unlikely shot against Frasier and Niles receiving a beating. Daphne almost makes the shot, but fails, and the three flee the bar.

Frasier's ex-wife Lilith visits him in Seattle because she found a letter from Frasier asking if reconciliation is possible. Niles is mad at Lilith for snickering during Maris's wedding vows. Lilith offers an extremely condescending apology, which Niles eagerly accepts. It turns out Lilith thought Frasier had left the letter after his last visit a few weeks before, but he actually wrote the letter before he first left for Seattle, a year earlier. Mortified, Lilith tries to leave in a huff but catches her purse in his door, further destroying her dignity. Later, Frasier meets her at her hotel room to go to dinner as friends, but they end up falling into bed and making passionate love through the night. In the morning, Lilith looks at the breakfast and says "This was a mistake," which Frasier takes as an admission about their relationship and quickly recites his own litany of reasons why they should not reconcile. When Lilith says she was talking about the breakfast, Frasier is mortified. Lilith breaks down, but Frasier reassures her that she is a strong woman, and they agree to part as friends.

On the night of the awards ceremony, Frasier is discomfited to find that his fellow nominee is Seattle radio legend Fletcher Gray, nominated eleven times before, without success.

Frasier finally grows fed up with Martin's chair, which clashes with the rest of the interior decorating and is held together with duct tape. In spite of its poor condition, Martin refuses to get rid of it. Without his knowledge, Frasier and Niles go to a furniture store and buy a "Lazy Guy", a black leather chair with built in massage and vibration functions. Back at the apartment, Frasier has Leo, a building employee, put Martin's old chair in a storage room and bring the new chair up. When Martin gets back, he tries the chair and the massage function and asks to have his old chair back. Leo remembers that he accidentally threw it in a dumpster, from where it was taken. Frasier and Martin butt heads, Martin arguing that the chair was the one thing that made him feel at home in the apartment. When Frasier learns of the great sentimental value the chair has for Martin, he appeals to his listeners to find it, promising a finder's fee. Amidst a number of prank calls, he gets a real call from a junior high school, where it's being used on the set for a production of "Ten Little Indians". The teacher, Mrs Warren, refuses to return the chair until two weeks later, since it's needed for the set. When the cast member playing "Dr. Armstrong" comes down with stomach flu, Mrs. Warren, holding the chair hostage, forces Frasier, who played the part at Harvard, to replace him. After the play is performed, Frasier gets the chair back.

Trouble starts when they inadvertently drive over the border into Canada, before Daphne's green card has come through.

Niles is working on a psychology book, but the project has come to a halt since someone else wrote a book on the idea he sold the publisher. He meets with his publisher, Sam Tanaka, at Café Nervosa with Frasier at the table to present a new idea, which he doesn't have. When Sam floats the idea of two siblings writing a book about sibling psychology, Niles leaps on the idea and tells him that will be the project. Frasier is initially reluctant to join the project, but Niles convinces him to do it. When they start writing, they find themselves at a loss for ideas, but get the idea to use Frasier's show to get material. The next day, Frasier has a theme show and asks callers to share their stories of sibling relationships, giving them a wealth of material for the day. After the show Sam Tanaka calls and tells them he has been discussing the serialization rights with Reader's Digest and wants the first few chapters as a sample. Frasier and Niles tell him their current material is very rough and Sam gives them until Friday to rework the book. Following the Gershwin brothers' example, Frasier suggests that he and Niles lock themselves in a hotel room to get the privacy they need. They do so and start writing, but spend days in the hotel room and become unable to even agree on the opening sentence. Come Friday, they have nothing to show for their work except a lot of resentment on Niles' part because he is annoyed by how he is more successful as a psychiatrist than Frasier, who still becomes a celebrity, and he is tired of being the second of the two to reach the milestones of life, such as getting married and having children. After the Crane brothers' fight turns into physical violence, they split up. After their resentment continues for a while, Martin tells them about a partner he had on the force who as killed after they had a similar falling out. The story, which he later tells Daphne was a lie, makes Frasier and Niles make amends.

Frasier falls ill and is confined to bed, he ends up being a horrible patient, getting on Daphne's nerves. When it becomes clear that KACL restaurant critic Gil Chesterton is attempting to steal his timeslot, Frasier begs Niles to take over. When Niles unexpectedly becomes quite a success, a feverish Frasier begins to imagine plots against him and decides to drag himself to the station no matter what. In his delirium, he locks Niles and Roz out and fails to host a successful show, though he was able to be taken away before things were irreversibly damaged. The next day, Frasier wonders if he really did that, which Daphne says it's a dream- she plans to tell him about his insanity when he is able to remember.
