Though officially separated Deborah and Maurice are on a caravan holiday where he is on medication and she is preparing to publish a book about living with his depression. Amy is in a relationship with the much older Hylda, a tattooed vicar and ex-drug addict whilst Donald has started his own plumbing business and Japanese lodger Shun hits the bottle after a traumatic experience. Amy is given a book, Baumgaertner, by a mysterious old woman called Wendy, which reveals disturbing facts about the family's ancestors.

Amy continues to rehearse her band the Pink Cuttlefish Orchestra for their performance in Omsk but is increasingly troubled by images from the book Baumgaertner and asks Maurice if he can shed any light on it, though he is unable to. Amy is also hostile to Deborah's making money by exposing her husband's illness, refusing to read her work whilst Maurice is perturbed by Shun's drunken public outbursts and Donald declares his hatred of all women.

Learning more about suicides and murders in Baumgaertner Amy is convinced her family is cursed and shocks her orchestra with an avant-garde arrangement designed to break the curse - against which they rebel. Donald eschews his hatred of women by taking up with former clown Matilda and Deborah, after rowing with Maurice, who is writing his own account of their life, is pulled up short at her book launch.

With Avelaine's baby in tow Amy goes in search of Wendy, who tells her the truth about her terrifying ancestors whilst Deborah finds unexpected comfort from Hylda after her disastrous book launch. However Hylda expresses her concern about Amy, leading Deborah to interrupt a wild party Maurice is having with the orchestra and where Matilda rejects Donald. Amy also dramatically crashes it with her solution to break the supposed curse on the family.

The family reunites in their concern for Amy's mental health with Maurice admitting it may be hereditary. Hylda also brings her own experiences in play to reassure Amy and Donald finally confesses his feelings for Matilda. With Deborah and Maurice no longer enemies the Flowers gather to hear Amy's orchestra whilst Shun wanders off into his magical part of the nearby forest.

Shun recalls his first visit to the Flowers family to help Maurice illustrate his book. Nana is still alive and watching the household argue through the window Shun is tempted to flee. However after he has bestowed traditional gifts on his hosts and joined them in an alfresco picnic he decides to stay and the family realizes that Maurice has found a very valuable assistant.
