Children's author Maurice Flower lives with his batty mother, trombone teacher wife Deborah and their twin children would-be musician Amy and frustrated inventor Donald and with Shun, their Japanese housekeeper, who provides erotic illustrations for Maurice. On the couple's anniversary - after Maurice has appeared to try and hang himself - they throw a party inviting acerbic plastic surgeon George and his daughter Abigail and builder Barry, who adores Deborah and fights George over her. Events are overshadowed when one of George's inventions blows up and Nana has an accident.

Dropped by his publishers the Carrolls Maurice considers psychiatric treatment and matters are not helped when Barry confesses to his one night stand with Deborah, causing Maurice to junk his magic set. He is not the best of company when he and Deborah are invited to dinner by Hugo's parents who delight in being swingers. Donald is not happy when Amy appears to be embarking on a Lesbian affair with his adored Abigail and only Shun offers a positive with a cartoon version of the Flowers though nobody is interested.

Using Donald's latest lame invention , a flying car, Maurice takes Deborah to a hotel to talk things over but she is so fed up she drives off and leaves him at a petrol station. Amy makes a dreadful discovery regarding Abigail and George, causing even Donald to be sympathetic whilst Shun impresses the Carrolls with his own original ideas for a picture book.

Amy is struck by lightning and rushed to hospital by Barry and Donald. They are joined by Maurice, who has returned home alone and who is told by Barry to appreciate Deborah more. Consequently Maurice sends a tape to Deborah's hotel, admitting his failures and his love for her and hopefully reconciling all the Flowers.
