In Northeast England, a week-old baby boy is found abandoned in a toilet of a hospital by janitor Didi Mputu. Twenty minutes later, a young Muslim woman commits suicide by jumping in front of a train. On board is off-duty detective Laurie Franklin. Franklin quickly suspects the baby was abandoned by the mother prior to her suicide, but the police have no idea who either are.

The identity of the person killed by the train is revealed after a photofit is posted, but this only complicates matters as national intelligence immediately get involved. Besides the name, the police still know almost nothing about the victim, including any relationship to the abandoned baby, Michael.

Michael takes ill in the hospital and the diagnosis is suspected methadone withdrawal. A week after the murder and there are no leads. A reconstruction is staged where Laurie is annoyed by Gerry's interference and stroppy Muslim passenger Jamal Matthews accuses her of inciting Islamophobia.

Spolier; Reveals End. Two months later, Laurie, still limping from the accident that killed Mal,learns that Jen and Gerry are to marry. Maureen, having told the police she was on the bridge when the boy jumped but did not push him, lives with Pat.
