Five Owners

Wed, Apr 15, 202045 mins

Although there are some previous connections of friendships, professional connections and/or acquaintanceships among the group, real estate agents Ainsley and Lachlan (he still married to Melanie, their relationship always on-again/off-again), gay physician Harry (still in the closet to his overbearing mother with who he still lives), lawyer Liz, and trades worker Ben are formally stuck with each other when they are seated together at the proverbial singles table at a wedding reception. And as they are the most mismatched two at the table, Ainsley can tell that Liz and Ben will be the ones, typical at a singles table at a wedding reception, that will have that casual sexual encounter before the end of the evening in Liz proverbially going slumming. The table discussion of wedded non-bliss turns to the one benefit of marriage over being single: the ability for home ownership with the combined income. An off the cuff comment by Ainsley's long time landlord Heather, her and her husband Colin's granny suite where Ainsley has lived for eight years, leads to the thought that Ainsley, Lachlan, Harry, Liz and Ben could go into buying a house together, each agreeing in seeing such a living situation being beneficial for their own personal situation beyond the home ownership. Liz's one caveat is that she not only saw her sexual encounter with Ben as a one time only thing, but that she doesn't want to be part of a household community with the other four. For Ainsley, the benefit is being close to Lachlan, with who she has been in love ever since he "became available" five years ago and who Lachlan has often turned to in his times of trouble with Melanie, which Heather can foresee, in they living together, will be trouble for Ainsley in knowing Lachlan and Lachlan's type. They are ecstatic when they find a suitable house up for auction, they managing to submit the winning bid. That excitement turns to anguish when the house doesn't quite turn out to be the property as advertised, and as cracks start to form in some of their situations which may end this experiment between the five even before it begins.

With Manju having offered to prepare all the food, Harry may take any opportunity to delay his return home for the gathering to avoid his overbearing mother. While Ainsley deals with her emotions surrounding Lachlan, including Lachlan's statement of the strain that has emerged in their working relationship, in relation to this set-up with Simmo, she may discover something that is emerging that certain others may be able to see more clearly.

Three Millimetres

A few months into their living arrangement, the roommates have settled into life with each other, with the one sticking point among the most vociferous being easy-going Ben, who has no idea that any of his actions are crossing personal boundaries of the others. While Liz has a long list of negatives about Ben, which she tries to communicate to Ainsley in her own burgeoning romantic feelings for him, they in general have three main issues with him. While Liz wants them collectively to stage an intervention, straight talking Heather vows to the others that she will handle talking to Ben personally about these three items, which will no longer be problems by the end of the day. Distracted in her discussion with Ben which only highlights Ben's unawareness, Heather is only able to confront him about one of those issues, namely the one concerning specifically Harry. What happens on this matter places Harry in a difficult position in more ways than one with regard to Ben's relationship with the others in the house and what is best for all concerned.

Zero Dollars

45 mins

The house has been burgled, the only item seemingly stolen being the television. While it officially belongs to Liz, she seems the least invested of the five in dealing with the invasion of their property. What the other four are unaware of is that Liz's distraction from this matter is as she is dealing with her life spiraling downward out of control, she potentially losing everything in the process, not only her material possessions, but her self-esteem and her new friendships with her housemates. She may need their emotional support now more than ever in her life, she who has always been able to power through any problem on her own, this one which appears to be different and more severe than anything else she's faced. That potential loss of support even applies to her longtime friend Harry. In they reporting the burglary to the police, who is sent to investigate is their police officer neighbor, Pete Portelli. Ben can see that there is a spark of attraction at least on Harry's side and while Harry may not be open enough to make the first move with Pete, Ben does whatever he can at least to get Harry and Pete in the same physical space. Meanwhile, Ainsley feels the best move for herself in her developing feelings for Ben is avoidance, while Ben, in his developing feelings for Heather, tries to move those feelings, which he knows are reciprocated to some extent, to the next level in part in demonstrating that his intentions are genuine, and despite the house rule of no sex between any of the five of them.

Five Lies

45 mins

Lies, either in the direct telling or in omission of information, abound among the housemates. During what ends up being a successful second date with Pete, Harry isn't truthful about one area of importance to Pete. In discovering how important it is to his and Pete's relationship progressing, Harry will find coming clean about this issue to the person involved is more difficult than he expects. Despite the no sex between housemates rule, Ainsley is on the verge of telling Ben about her feelings for him. What happens in this regard may be affected by and in turn may affect an issue with Lachlan, about which the two aren't totally truthful. Heather isn't totally honest to either Ben or Ainsley when she discovers Ainsley's latest affair of the heart. And while she is morally and legally obligated to tell the truth specifically about the bankruptcy in her quest for a job with another law firm, Liz is less than forthright about what she discovers is happening behind certain closed doors of the house.

Fifty Years

45 mins

Manju, slowly recovering from her stroke in the hospital, just wants to go home. Harry, if being honest with himself, knows that she living in her house is not ideal, and on her own not an option, at least in the short term. Harry has to decide what to do in light of the near zero probability of he being able to convince her of any other option besides what she knew her life pre-stroke to be. Meanwhile, Heather is on the brink of turning fifty, and while Heather would just like to forget about it, upbeat Ainsley is planning on throwing her a surprise party consisting of her family, the housemates and a few of the neighbors whether or not she wants one. Heather's milestone gets even worse when she learns that the reason her receptionist Rhonda wants to take some extended time off which has led to her needing to find a replacement receptionist for those six weeks is that Rhonda and Colin have embarked on a relationship, they planning on going away on a vacation together, a trip that Colin had long wanted to do that Heather didn't. Due to circumstances including Liz knowing about what was going on between Heather and Ben, Liz and Heather grow unexpectedly closer. The situation for all of the housemates turns on a dime with an incident at the surprise party.

Four Meats

45 mins

In the aftermath of Heather's party, the interrelationships between the housemates are in shambles. Harry has been spending more time with Manju than at the house. Ainsley has been largely MIA, and even when she is around, she isn't speaking to Heather who has been trying to maintain communication. And with Ben and Liz being the only two together much of the time, Liz has once again been focusing on the little things that bother her about living with him. In analyzing the situation, Ben believes he is the center of all this strife. Coinciding with this situation is Rebecca, away on a conference, asking Ben to pick up Mia, who hasn't been feeling well, from camp and bring her home. Instead, Ben believes that Mia could stay with him until Rebecca comes home, it not only in an effort to bond with her, but as a means to bring the roommates together, Liz to be the messenger to the others of the white lie of Mia wanting to see what her father's supportive home life is all about. With Mia's visit, Ben will see what it means to be a father, from finding out what truly is behind Mia wanting to all of a sudden leave camp, to dealing with the more visceral elements of life as a case of food poisoning suddenly hits most in the house, the first victim being Mia. As they all contend too with those visceral elements of the food poisoning, things seem to being going full circle with many of them back to where they were four months ago when they bought the house.

One Bid

46 mins

In the housemates having made the decision to sell, they are all not just contemplating where they each will live, but their immediate future in their entirety. Ainsley, in what Harry had suspected actually being true, feels like she may not only lose the house, but everything in her time of most need, especially as friction still exists between her and Heather. Ben only knows that he has to leave for Mia's sake in that Rebecca may fight for sole parental rights otherwise. While his relationship with Manju is crumbling under she using him as her physical and emotional crutch in light of he being outed, Harry, who never felt more liberated than having lived at the house especially in still having deep feelings for Pete, may feel he has no other option but to move back with Manju regardless due to it being his duty. Heather has only decided that she will go traveling far afield - Iceland seeming at the top of the list - despite doing such not being in her general nature. She gets a rather unexpected reaction to her news from Colin about her leaving in relation to himself and the boys. And while Liz believes that representing Edwina in her divorce may be the first step to getting back on her feet professionally, she discovers that something else may accompany this role on the more personal side.
