Episode 1

Fourteen years ago 23 year old Kevin Russell was imprisoned for killing school-girl Linda Simms. His girlfriend Annie believes his confession was forced from him by DI Olivia Greenwood and asks maverick lawyer Emma Banville to take up his case. Emma is also sheltering Miriam Attar, wife of Yusuf, a doctor working in Syria, which makes her a target for the security forces. From transcripts of the original interviews Emma believes Greenwood totally led the confused Kevin and with her young assistant Dominic finds anomalies at the crime scene but is harassed by Linda's family and the gutter press - which jeopardizes the chances of Emma and partner Steve adopting. Emma's appeal is partially successful, declaring the conviction unsafe and bailing Kevin for a retrial. This makes Emma enemies in high places on both sides of the Atlantic.

Episode 2

Released from prison Kevin is threatened by a vengeful mob, including his son Jason, and rescued by local MP Matthew Wild, before Emma lodges him at her house. However she is saddened to learn that Kevin aided a man called Tony Pullings in taking nude photos of Linda, though Pullings had an alibi for the murder. Annie is nonetheless angry with Kevin. The photos suggest Linda had a connection with an American air-base where Emma believes she was originally murdered and then moved. The Simms family, backed y Matthew Wild, oppose an exhumation of the body whilst American agent Heather Myles and British security veteran Alastair McKinnon hope to trap Emma via Miriam. Consequently Emma has unwelcome visitors and a call from another of Pullings' victims.

Episode 3

After the armed raid on Emma's house Miriam, as a terrorist suspect, and Kevin are arrested, Miriam having given Emma the SIM card for her phone. A possible break-through occurs when Siobhan Murphy tells Emma about the nude photos Pullings took of her and Linda and other girls at his sex parties but Pullings is being protected by Myles in a safe house. In the face of opposition from the Simms family Emma is granted the coroner's assent to exhume Linda's body, persuading Greenwood of American interference in the murder though Greenwood, under pressure from Myles, recants. However new forensic evidence confirms Kevin's innocence following the exhumation but before Kevin's retrial Myles scares Siobhan off and everything will now rest on Kevin's testimony.

Episode 4

At Kevin's trial, against Emma's advice, he pleads guilty to manslaughter and is immediately freed - before doing something drastic. Emma locates Pullings but he is unhelpful before she secretly meets Yusef, Miriam's husband, back in the country he is also taken in by the police. Emma then flies to America to interview possible clients of Linda, notably sergeant Logan Bradley, but ends up getting arrested herself.
Episode 5

Emma briefly gets to speak to Logan, who says he loved and planned to elope with Linda, whom he met at a sex party on the US air force base organized by her uncle Phil Simms. A call from Greenwood sees her return to England where the women interview Simms, to no great advantage and Emma visits failed suicide Kevin Russell. Emma then goes to speak to McKinnon, a former cabinet minister during the Iraqi war whom she links to the US base and Linda but he is intransigent to her questions.

Episode 6

With Kevin's suicide, Greenwood's suspension and the police refusal to reopen the case Emma's last hope is to contact Rachel Leigh, who joined Linda at the sex parties and is grateful to Greenwood for leading her to Rachel's mother Maureen. Though elderly and a dementia sufferer Maureen recognizes Rachel as changing her name to Laura, wife of the prospective party leader Matthew Wild, who seeks assurance from Myles to protect him . Ultimately Emma confronts him on his attendance at the sex parties and learns the truth about Linda's death and his role in it. Consequently Green wood is reinstated, Myles and McKinnon discredited - freeing Miriam in the process - and Emma's adoption plan goes ahead.
