The Menace of Mephistopheles

Manor estate owner Phillip Darlington is fatally stabbed in bed and Inspector Mallory arrests his son and heir Lawrence 'Larry' after finding the bloody knife in his bedroom. Sergeant Goodfellow saw Mallory plant it, confronts evasive Mallory, then seeks Father Brown's help. With Sid Carter's 'pub research', they discover Mallory's wife and children are missing, actually kidnapped by a vindictive blackmailer. Darlington's daughter Arabella, whom he kept on a short leash, returns home from Oxford having just married that weekend to Charles Huxton, who checks out as a suave master swindler. Brother and sister claim he slept all night in the house and she with her groom in Oxford. Brown also focuses on a stolen car and a man, known to Sid's prison contacts, whom Mallory wronged ten years ago has returned for vile retribution.

Manor estate owner Walter Penmark is found burnt to death in a locked room after receiving a warning IGNIS, meaning fire in Latin. B&B keeper Peggy Langdon is murdered by a block of ice after receiving GRANDO 'hail'. Sid becomes Mrs McCarthy's bodyguard after she gets a warning, FAMES 'starvation',having damaged the butcher's business by gossip. Father Brown and Sid investigate to save Mrs McCarthy's life, that Walter Penmark's wife had committed suicide after suffering domestic violence, gossip, and advice from Mrs McCarthy to give up her lover, local fireman Gideon Fredericks, a friend of Sid. Her sister Ruby Nellins returned from America for her funeral and stayed on in Kembleford to run a business, one of many properties entrepreneur Richard Belcroft was trying to buy, like Peggy Langdon's home and some owned by Walter Penmark.

The Requiem for the Dead

Just released notorious child killer Ned Hannigan is found dead in the woods, having serving 14 years for the confessed murder of his childhood girlfriend 14 year old Maggie Banks who was besotted with him, the corpse never found. Inspector Mallory arrests Maggie's mother after finding fingerprint evidence. Maggie's father John had already attacked Hannigan and their adult son Daniel had visited Ned just before his release from prison. Hannigan had never revealed where the body was. Father Brown wonders why Hannigan returned to Kembleford and who he was meeting and his only clue in his prison bag was a wooden symbol of the star system Gemini, which inspires guessing the key: a hidden character.

The Children of Kalon

Former cult leader Gerald 'Kalon' Firth convinces Father Brown to speak on his behalf at his parole hearing. Brown secures his release but is shocked when Gerald returns to rejoin as ordinary member the 'Church of Apollo', now run by his disciple Tobias, whose partner Thelma, is unhappy to have Kalon back as she remembers Kalon's past actions with the girls of the church and has a naive, blindly devout daughter, Clara. Thelma is found dead in Kalon's locked room, Inspector Mallory arrests Firth. Father Brown believes he's innocent even though Clara had written to him in prison, and delves into the various relationships at the cult of 'astral elders', but to solve the crime, he has to fish in murky water at the estate's lake and secret accounts, while Kalon now helps spread the truth.

The Final Devotion

Cardinal Ratcliffe arrives in Kembleford from Rome, with Vatican police inspector Mario Angelini, on a mission to finally find the St. Sylvester papal tiara, lost since the fifteenth century. The last known trail is to the nearby castle and ancestors of Lady Cecily. Brown accompanies as spiritual advisor Lady Felicia , who poses as an imaginary aristocratic bride inspecting with Mrs McCarthy, posing as her mother, the estate as venue for a socialite wedding to an American tycoon. Master thief Flambeau poses as that groom, complicating the room assignments. Brown is reluctant to team of with the career scoundrel, yet will even risk excommunication rather then trap him to risk the death penalty. A vindictive viper bites, the clue hunt leads to the treasure and a dangerous finale for all.

The New Order

Lord Arthur Hawthorne and his wife return from London to his native Kembleford to retire chairmanship of his national newspaper and holds a garden party to announce his unenthusiastic, recently graduated son Gabe would takeover as editor. Hawthorne had expected, with the bishop's blessing, Father Brown to give him his personal attention and when he refused to be put over the local flock, Brown finds himself accused of breaking the seal of the confessional and is suspended from his parish; his place taken by Father Featherstone, Hawthorne's African London priest, pending canon Fox's investigation. At the garden party Hawthorne is threatened by Stanley Buchanan, a homosexual intellectual and outcast since exposed in Hawthorne's newspaper. When a rifle shot wounds Hawthorne, Inspector Mallory arrests Buchanan. Hawthorne soon joins Brown suspecting his -cheated- wife or son. A second attempt on Hawthorne's life leads to Buchanan's release. Father Brown sends Mrs McCarthy to the Hawthorne mansion to help uncovers Hawthorne's philandering, his wife's unhappiness, his son's unwillingness to take over editorship, and father Featherstone's thwarted ambitions. A third, desperate crime is prevented last minute after discovering Stanley's still undisclosed, well-protected, yet deeply hurt gay partner.

The Island of Dreams

*Father Brown, Sergeant Goodfellow and Inspector Mallory with family accept an invite for the 20th anniversary of Chummy's holiday camp. During the event, widow owner Marjorie Chummy is strangled with an apron belonging to Mavis Jug, maid and general dogsbody at the camp, so Inspector Mallory arrests her. Father Brown and Sergeant Goodfellow look at the other staff, which Mrs Chummy all kept under a tight rein: hopeless klutz Jock McCudgeon, Griff Grimshaw whose shot at a London job she sabotaged, and young talent Sandy Beauchamp. Father Brown also discovers that little Billy Fairfield drowned years ago in the camp swimming pool that Mavis Jug, then an "Orangecoat", should have been supervising.

The Wayward Girls

After a speeding fine issued by Sergeant Goodfellow, Bunty gets off as community service to give a talk at Langley Hall, a reformatory ('Borstal') for girls aged 16 to 23. Bunty's compact is stolen, and found in the possession of one of rebellious inmate Brenda, who is placed in solitary confinement. Next day the governor of the Borstal is found murdered, Brenda is on the run after hiding in Bunty's car. Father Brown and Bunty return to the Borstal to help Sergeant Goodfellow's investigation, as inspector Mallory is on annual leave. They have to unravel the lies and ill feeling between model inmate Kate (who has a secret adult ex-con boyfriend) and Brenda and tensions among the uniformed staff. The governor's liberal-leaning deputy Emily Harris takes charge over long-serving Helen Delaney, a hardliner like the late governor. Father Brown uncovers exploitation of recently released girls including missing Brenda and the newly released Kate.

The Enigma of Antigonish

Brown's gang attends open day at the ailing spa, where Sid accidentally pushes McCarthy falling into a barrel at the commotion about eccentric French employee Serge Dura, who stripped to shorts for meditation, soon sent off by his co-managing fiancee Lola. Having served time in jail for his brutal attack on the spa's original manager and co- owner Elsie Peters during a robbery of the spa's takings that left her struggling with seizures, ex-employee Finbar Finch returns to Kembleford, vowing to Father Brown to live a new life after God found him in prison. Elsie, and by proxy her ex-army husband captain Viktor Peters and her sister Lola are rattled by Finbar's return and tensions run high. Shortly afterward Finbar Finch is found dead, shot in the face; the murder weapon was taken from Viktor's desk in the spa, and a brooch found at the shooting leads to Inspector Mallory arresting Lola. Father Brown inspired by Antigonish, a poem Finch was reading, to prove victim nor murderer are what they seem.
