Returning to Kembleford by train from an evening at the theater, Lady Felcia and Mrs McCarthy travel in style with opera diva Bianca Norman, her two adopted (but by now adult) children and her fifth husband. The train gets robbed by two not overly bright robbers, and lady Felicia and Mrs. McCarthy are taken hostage. When the police arrive, Bianca Norman appears to be shot. Inspector Mallory goes on his usual rampage trying to find someone to blame. Father Brown and Bunty are very concerned about their missing friends. Meanwhile, the kidnappers already regret having abducted the ladies. Things get very confusing when it turns out that neither of them has shot the diva. A third shooter must have been present. Lady Felicia convinces the two culprits to put their faith in Father Brown.

Father Brown and his team of church tower bell-ringers warmly welcome their new 'musical director', young and gifted Jamie Cheeseman, sent by his uncle, canon Raymund from the diocese. The only exception is stern mister Mervyn Glossop, who scolds every musical error or deviation from tradition criminal and hints at disclosing the others' secrets. During a fund raising fun fair to fiance updating the bells as Jamie suggested, Mervyn is fatally stabbed up in the bell tower, where he was sabotaging cords. Inspector Mallory jails bell ringing farm hand Enoch Rowe, of Jamaican descent, with a violent record from the Caribbean. Brown, Bunty and MCCarthy work out what Mervyn knew about everybody's secrets, like Phoebe Sims and Ruth Thundersby's lesbian attraction, a false murder trial testimony, wrongly ascribed gifts and Jamie's London gambling past, with a surprising conclusion.

Visiting his atheist friend, retired professor Robert Wiseman, Brown is ushered out but invites himself back in as he senses something curious in on hand. He thus attends the auction Wiseman, in debt, hopes to cash in on enough to keep supporting his daughter and grand-kids. It's an allegedly magic whistle, with a historical pedigree and 'documentation', accompanied by a ghost summoning show. Brown sees through that but fails to make his friend call the whole thing off. Soon the professor and a bidding widow Dorothy Parnell, a retired medium, are killed 'by ghosts', and Major Basil Winthrop fatally stabbed when he insists everyone must wait for the police. Brown finds himself locked up by the murderer, whom he deals with before the police arrives.

Father Brown accepts to become the informal spiritual counselor at Miss Cynthia Rosewood's finishing school, which becomes the focal point of murder investigations. Gardener Jimbo Riley is arrested after he accidentally shoots Mrs McCarthy when Brown convinces him to drop his gun pointed at the American reverend Willard, Cynthia's business partner, whom he accuses of killing his fiancee, school nurse Maude Riley, by taking the break of a higher-parked van. Brown stirs Bunty to join as undercover pupil, again pranked by her former boarding school Nemesis, who treats her uniform sweater with a mild dose of plant poison, but Willard dies from a lethal dose during the morris dance. In hospital, McCarthy learns that an expelled pregnant debutante was raped by Willard and sought an alternative to adoption through Maud, so the rectory gang adopts her and her baby while Brown investigates.

Father Brown and Inspector Mallory are missing the morning after a visit to eerie Spencer Hall, and Edmund Noon is found dead in St Mary's churchyard next to grave of George and Jasmin Haggard, whom he is believed to have murdered. Noon had lured both Mallory and Brown to profess his innocence of the crime. Without their leaders, sergeant Goodfellow, Mrs McCarthy and Bunty must reason and deduction, seeking clues themselves, to find the missing men, who are chained up underground, with oxygen running out. Beggar veteran Harold "Blind 'Arry" Slow earns McCarthy's gratitude, having refused payment standing watch and finding a crucial key in the churchyard.

Inspector Mallory insists sergeant Goodfellow must go easy on slow-learning rookie Colin Blaisen, expected to rise police ranks like a meteor, being chief constable Len Blaisen's son. Mallory is injured and hospitalized after man-hunting in vain wanted criminal Alan Tylett. Inspector Sullivan, now a Scotland Yard undercover, takers over the case and agrees to team up with Brown. They find Tylett, who convinces them he was falsely blamed by corrupt cops he can denounce with half of a booklet of coded evidence. Brown must get it from their leader, Len Blaisen in person, who meanwhile plays his own dirty tricks and involves Colin.

Patrick O'Leary, a trusted parish benefactor, was winning Mrs. McCarthy's favor until his just-fired gardener Angelica Evans dies of cyanide poisoning while standing up in mass to reveal his dark secrets and father Brown discovers he's a bigamist secret, whose "O'Leary's house of God" included his ex Angelica, his widowed niece Maria Hardy, his docile housekeeper Francesca and her teen son George Chase. Mrs McCarthy's last date with Patrick provides Father Brown a clue to solve the murder while Inspector Mallory and mislead others act on dangerous wrong presumptions.

Episode 8

Titan Stark and his nomadic company performs its anarchistic theatre in open air at the farm of Daffyd Clegg, whose romantically neglected wife Sally gets physical again with her ex from 20 years ago. Their 'playwright' is fatally shot in a shed, locked form the inside, as turns out through a loose roof tile. While Inspector Mallory, his sergeant Goodfellow and Brown's party, who were in the audience, investigate, TItan is fatally stabbed and orphaned actor Angus Boyde, who turns down sex with Titan's hardly grieving daughter Magdalena, survives a bed fall from the farm house. Brown disproves Daffyd's arrest and appeals to the real killer to come clean, having guessed a historical motive.

Episode 9

Grumpy Lord Henry Hollingworth shoots at trespassing juvenile bird watchers. He is murdered at the nearby Skylark Youth Hostel while Father Brown, Mrs McCarthy, Bunty, inspector Mallory and sergeant Goodfellow are sleeping there on a bird watching outing with the Kembleford Ramblers and Twitchers. Ill feeling between Hollingworth and the ramblers and owners of the hostel was apparent; his sponsorship of the hostel and nearby girls convent ended 15 years previously and his daughter Henrietta 'Hetty', an old school-friend of Bunty's has been covering up blackmail letters her father had been receiving. Brown must work out what happened both that night and before, especially the cause for blackmail.

Episode 10

Lady Felicia's diamond is stolen by a Russian who wanted to buy it, but she refused. Father Brown calls in Hercule Flambeau to steal it back from him. Flambeau also empties out the Russians safe and double crosses them.
