Fat Albert and the gang are cheering on their friend, Lawanda, as she prepares to enter a prestigious skateboarding tournament. When she is unable to arrange for rides from her parents or afford bus fare, she begins hitchhiking and accepting rides from strangers to get to her cross-town practice venue. Fat Albert warns Lawanda that her habit could lead to serious trouble, although Lawanda insists that nothing will happen to her. Her luck finally runs out when, after thumbing another ride on the day of the tournament, she is involved in a car accident. Lawanda is seriously injured but will recover; it also means she has to forfeit. (The circumstances of the accident are not explained, but it is implied that the driver of the car Lawanda was in was killed.) Fat Albert -- and in the live-action segment, Bill Cosby -- reinforces the dangers of hitchhiking; while it only involved a car accident in Lawanda's case, Albert tells his friend that she could have been raped, beaten, strangled and/or killed. Lawanda learns her lesson as she recuperates and -- after getting a bus pass -- promises the gang to win the tournament next year.
